Not that the health of Cuba's musical tradition was ever seriously in doubt, but if anyone was contemplating a trip to the bedside Cuban troubadour Pedro Luis Ferrer's enchanting new Rustico should put those thoughts to rest. Ferrer specializes in the kind of stately and romantic son that much of the rest of the world associates with the Buena Vista Social Club, but in his hands the music is anything but a museum piece. Ferrer hails from the eastern end of Cuba and draws from some musical styles less well known outside the island, like changui and trova espirituana--the latter a style of singing from Central Cuba--and he throws in some far-flung musical elements as well, like the Peruvian percussion of "Como Vivire, Mi Cholita?" and the marimbula--a larger version of the African mbira thumb piano--that functions as the bass on much of the album. The result is refreshing, with Ferrer's rich tres lines and the lush backing vocal chorus sometimes recalling the countrified Cuban swing of Eliades Ochoa but with a more far-reaching twist. This spirit of reinvention extends to Ferrer's lyrics (translated from Spanish in the liner notes), which may surprise listeners not used to social commentary from modern Cuban songwriters. "I paid for a watermelon yesterday/with a two month salary/that's why my heart/sometimes bursts" sings Ferrer in "Fundamento." In "Congo Vegetariano" he notes the irony of vegetarians in a land where no one can afford meat, proving that at least for Ferrer, honoring tradition includes bringing it into the present. --Ezra Gale

five stars worth of cuban magic.
Only slight let down (and reason I had to deduct a star) was when i put it into my DVD player, there were no pictures. And to me words without pictures is just like reading the bible, eventually gets kinda boring, with all the "thou shalt", "thou shalt nots" and "Moses parted the sea, only to see that God had just burned his last hemp bush" and so forth.

Unusual - Not to be Missed.......2005-12-15
Perhaps because of its extra-musical associations, the alphorn's sound cannot help but evoke images of natural settings and forces. It is not suited to serious or profound subjects, as, for example, the flute or clarinet.
Nevertheless, the alphorn is possessed of a unique timbre, and Molnar's performance is nuanced and expressive. Leopold Mozart's "Sinfonia Pastorella" showcases the composer's mastery of classical form, given an added dimension by the use of this unusual instrument. He would undoubtedly hold a higher place in the musical canon had he not sacrificed his own career to further that of his admittedly more gifted son.
The highlight of the disc is Ferenc Farkas' "Concertino Rustico," with its animated interplay between the soloist and orchestra. Altogether this disc is a marvelous exploration of the capabilities of this unfortunately rarely-heard instrument.

Amazing CD at a bargain price !.......2003-08-13
Varied and consistently excellent is how I would describe this offering. Very highly recommended. *****
a virtuoso pianist & composer.......2002-02-11
His own compositions are wonderful and varied. I especially like the lovely "Seven Bagatelles". Mr. Blackwood is Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, and he has taught there since '58...he's also one of the founding members of the fabulous Chicago Pro Musica, a group that has done so much for new American classical music.
I first heard Blackwood in his stunning performance of Leonard Bernstein's "Prelude, Fugue and Riffs", on the CD titled "Ebony Concerto" featuring fellow Pro Musica founding member (and extraordinary clarinet virtuoso) John Bruce Yeh, and he's been delighting me with his music ever since.
