A pleasant letdown!.......2004-11-07

I must admit that I knew about this album in Bunbury's official website and I was excited with the idea of Enrique working together with Shuarma (from 'Elefantes')in an album, as for the other two guys, they were only 'the other two guys'. When the album finally came out I was totally dissapointed of Enrique's songs, as for the rest of the songs, simply the work of genius.

The album opens with 'La felicidad', a great song with lyrics that match the genius of the music, which is an exquisite mixture of different rythms. In this song Enrique appears as he will in the whole album: as a shadow for the other three members singing chorus and backup vocals. Carlos Ann has a unique vocal style that will captivate anyone who listens to it, the feeling with which he sings (listen to 'L amour' and you'll see what I mean) gives his music a one of a kind feeling. As for Morti, he finally shows up as the great singer he is (the way he performs songs like 'Te esperare' and 'Magenta' shows a vocal quality that matches his lyrics), the only reference I had from him was as a chorus in Enrique's albums, but in this project he finally shows what he's capable of; a very pleasant surprise.
Enrique's songs totally dissapointed me, his first solo song 'Desmejorado' shows an artist tired, singing as if he had to do it whether he preferred he didn't, even Raphael's version of the song is better than this, 'Sex food' is another song with terrible lyrics and an even worst way of singing (as a matter of fact, he doesn't sing in this one), I guess the only highlight he has is 'As de copas' in which Carlos Ann and Shuarma help raise both the beginning and the end of this theme.
Bottomline, a great album, my personal least favorite songs are Enrique's, but as for the rest of it this album is a must for fans of rock and roll, a wide variety of rythms make this album very difficult to catalogue, but also the great masterpiece of music it is.

Excessive, Existential, Genius .......2004-11-02

Poetry and intospection fills this masterpiece of music so powerful as it is eclectic. There is a sense belonging to all kinds of genre, from the bohemian cabaret style of "Golpe en la sien", to the happy-feeling pop single "la felicidad". The intake of Enrique Bunbury is evident throughout the project, but the creative imput of the rest of the quartet is more than complimentary. Without a doubt a musical classic for people who love the pure and powerul effect of melody and poetry blend together.

Nada mas mortal que .......2004-08-22

Somos los priveligiados en escuchar y enteder el buen mensaje y tener el buen aprecio a los exponentes en lo mejor en la poesia hecha musica.

Si estan dispuestos a explorar otro nivel de rock en espanol les recomiendo escuchar y disfrutar esta amalgama de cuatro genios de la musica en espanol.

Un disco único.......2004-06-13

Few times in your life will you run into such a great cd as this one is. Not only are the songs great (deep, meaningful lyrics accompanied by strong music that can get to think of a 16th century spanish bar or of more recent rock bands like Duncan Dhu), but the four voices together interpreting them... it's just... like a trip to a parallel universe floating in a cloud of peace...

There's no "Bunbury stands out from the rest of them..." or "It's definetively Shuarma's style...", it's just the conjunction of four GREAT musicians!

Fuera de lo comun - un album magnifico y unico -.......2004-04-15

Enrique se junta con tres de sus amigos, Morti, Shuarma y Carlos Ann, para hcer este increible disco que lleva por nombre el Bushido, mismo nombre de la banda que se desintegro oficialmente el mismo dia que finalizaron la gravacion del disco.
Este album es dificil de catalogar en una solia categoria musical, lleva cacniones que van desde la copla hasta el blues.
A mi parecer, las canciones interpretadas por Carlos Ann "Golpe en la Sien" y "L'Amour" son dos de las mejores. Pero mi cancion favorita es "Infectado de tu Amor" una cancion maravillosa interpretada por Morti.
Compre este disco porque soy fan de Bunbury, y de Shuarma. Gracias este disco tuve la fortuna de conocer de Morti y Carlos Ann y descubrir su musica.
Este disco lo recomiendo rotundamente a aquellas personas que tienen una mente muy abierta hacia el rock y que saben que el rock no solo se hace con guitarras, bajo y baterias.

Album Description

This is the third full-length from Nebraska's Mayday. Songs of death, dismemberment, drugs, greed, and devotion. Like the teenage death ballads of the 50's, Mayday casts an odd sort of instrumentation and lyricism into romantic ballads of the afterlife. Mayday's "Bushido Karaoke" is made up of various Saddle Creek Records artists including members of Azure Ray, Bright Eyes, Cursive and Now It's Overhead. Unfortunately this pool of talent didn't really churn out a great album. "Bushido Karaoke" is a sadcore indie rock album at heart, and although it has its fair share of catchy tunes, most of it isn't great. There are no "bad" songs here, but they all still manage to sound cheesy and uninspired (partly due to the singer and how hard it is to make out some of the lyrics). The album sifts through several different moods - it'll be slow and emotional at one moment and fast and relatively energetic in the next. It's kind of interesting musically, but you won't really care enough about the songs to really study them. It's a good album, for all its flaws - its saving grace is that every song is at least kind've interesting and catchy. They aren't great songs though - they somehow lack that charm that gives, say, Franz Ferdinand or The Killers such great appeal (I gave both of those 4 stars each, too). For this reason alone I give it a "4" (you won't really care if you have these songs or not). Slightly recommended for indie rock and Saddle Creek Records fans.

Mayday's third release is the best thing to happen to Mayday since their sophomore release, "I Know Your Troubles Been Long", which was the best thing to happen to Mayday since their freshman release, "Old Blood", which was simply the best thing to happen to Mayday, at that time.

All three were real bright spots in my life.

Their junior release (that's right, junior release) is fantastic - a veritable orgy of mellow that engulfs you from the bouncing piano of "Pelf Help" to the lilting banjo of the romantic ode to capital punishment "Song of the Scaffold".

Bushido Karaoke is easily Mayday's most straightforward release, with the songs being uniformly short, and generally catchy. Unfortunately, this means that the album has none of the slow-burning, sometimes-experimental songs that highlighted their previous work. But luckily, that's a small disappointment - there's still plenty to love here.

A few songs immediately stand out as some of the band's best to date. Particularly wonderful are the infectious, wistful-but-humorous "Pelf-Help" and the samurai death waltz "Hidden Leaves." And after a few listens to familiarize yourself with them, the rest of the songs grow just as appealing: "Exquisite Corpse" laughs exuberantly in the face of death, "Song of the Scaffold" is a refreshingly clever declaration of love, etc. These tunes are brief and simple in structure, but the instrumental arrangements are subtle enough to keep things quite interesting - horns, violins, banjos, etc. are constantly popping up in just the right place.

Essentially, what Bushido Karaoke lacks in adventerousness, it makes up for with consistency. It may not have anything as inventive as the suites on Old Blood, but there's not a single dud among these songs, and that's no small feat.

Ted Stevens' main project Mayday may quite possibly be the most boring, mediocre Saddle Creek release to date. A heavy weight of sorts in the Omaha indie scene, Stevens fails to keep up to par with the likes of his friends and label mates such as, Tim Kasher's Cursive and The Good Life, and even the love him or hate him Conor Oberst.

Mayday's brand of music can be stripped down to a watered down version of Morrissey's vocals overtop an uninspired country-rock band with no direction. One of the things that captivate listeners of many Saddle Creek artists is the thoughtful lyrical format most of the bands seem to follow. While listening to Mayday's latest release, however, the listener may feel almost cheated as no cohesive element can be found throughout the entirety of the album.

What Mayday may indeed be, is the result of knowing and befriending the right people. All of Ted Stevens' closest friends are some of Saddle Creek's biggest stars, so it would just seem natural for him to be a star as well; unfortunately for all of us, he is not.

Finally, a really solid album from Ted Stevens.......2005-07-03

There's always been something about Ted Stevens' aesthetic that's kept me faithful to him (since Lullaby for the Working Class's album, Song) despite his never having released anything exactly mind-blowing. The latest Mayday release sees the band finally congealing into a modest, but solid band. There is no lack of quality on this album, although on first listen it sounds just like the previous two, both of which I failed to get much mileage out of. After listening to Bushido Kareoke a couple of times, I found myself wanting to hear more and more. If there's still some interested Mayday or Lullaby fans out there anywhere, then BUY THIS!

If you've never heard Mayday before, they've got a darker, traditional sound. I would actually liken this album to the Angels of Light's amazing new album 'Sing Other People,' in some abstract way. Both have similar textures and consistency, although Mayday's more uptempo. If you're a serious music fan, I'd definitely recommend adding it to your collection.

Ich find Bushido echt geil. Er ist einfach ein geiler Rapper. Fler und die ganzen Aggro Berliner können einpacken. Bushidos Texte sind meist sehr hart und manchmal auch sehr gefühlvoll, wie Augenblick, das trotz sanfter Seite ein doch sehr harter Song ist.

Yo if you guys want some rap thats NOT in English here ya go. Bushido is the ONLY german rapper that keeps it real. i lived in germany for 9 years all the other rappers are american wannbees. Bushido started off in his crew Aggro Berlin with alot of untalented rappers. Forget Kool savas,eko fresh,sido, and all the other wannabees. I dont have this CD from bushido yet but im gettin it pretty soon. His BEats and Lyrics are hard as rock if you want something worthwhile here ya go......... BUSHIDO
