Thalia

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Forget Destiny's Child; Mexican diva Thalia has a lock on independent-woman anthems. Her self-titled, eighth album (and fourth for EMI Latin) is ripe with girl-power ditties, from the ska-tinged "En la Fiesta Mando Y" to "A Quien le Importa," a devil-may-care ode to individuality. It's familiar ground for Thalia, who explored similar themes on 1997's Amor a la Mexicana and 1999's Arrasando. This new set is not as instantly addictive, but it showcases Thalia's continued evolution as an artist. "La Loca" is a smorgasbord of rock, cumbia, and rap rhythms, while the glittering "Vueltas en el Aire" is destined to fill dance floors. Mrs. Tommy Mottola also teams with the Kumbia Kings on "Tu y Yo" and enlists Marc Anthony as backup on "The Mexican." The inevitable crossover is also foreshadowed on the yearning ballad "Closer to You" and a cover of Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me 'Round," which finds Thalia purring like a sex kitten. If she keeps it up, we'll all soon be a slave for a new kind of diva. --Joey Guerra

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-11-26

Thalia possesses a powerful, sultry voice that she skillfully alters to fit the music's mood, in the fashion of Mariah Carey or Celine Dion. She can ooze mournful passion out of a folk song like "Piel Morena" or can seduce even the most surly of thugs as on "Me Pones Sexy" (the original, more sensual Spanish-language version of "I Want You"). She's capable of getting the dance floor moving, as she does on the frantic "Mujer Latina," but she can also draw couples to a slow dance, as she does on "No Me Ensenaste." Thalia's GREATEST HITS also includes two new tracks, the hooky, sing-along "Cuando Tu Me Tocas" and the breathy dance-floor bound "Accion Y Reaccion."

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent !.......2005-09-24

A very good collection but some fabulous songs are missing like 'Rosas', 'Fantasia' and 'Qiuero Hacerte El Amor'. Why weren't they included?

    5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2005-08-19

Calling all Latin music fans. Thalia's Greatest Hits album is exactly what it says it is.
Beginning with Piel Morena, from her debut release, and ending with Acclon Y Reaccion, the CD covers the singer's hits over the last ten years.

While A Quien Le Importa is guaranted to fill up the dance floor, Latin lovers will be floored with Amor A la Mexicana and Entre El Mar Y Una Estrella.

She's a true Latin diva whose talent speaks louder than her words.

This compilation is stupid. Maria La del Barrio? Rosalinda? Accion y Reaccion? Toda la felicidad? these songs are very stupid i'd rather prefer Amandote, Gracias a Dios, Sangre, Amarilo Azul. Please don't buy this album it's just waste of money. Please wait until EMI release a good Thalia's compilation because this album was released to forget about Thalia's crossover failed.

A year after its original release, Thalia's solid El Sexto Sentido disc gets a facelift. Funny thing is, this Re+Loaded version actually improves upon its mostly successful predecessor. The nips and tucks have made it a smoother, more unified effort. Gone is Thalia's playful take on Tejano icon Selena's "Amor Prohibido." Any trace of English-language material--three songs in total--has also been removed. It's all replaced by a quartet of high-caliber Spanish-language work that makes Re+Loaded worth the double purchase. "Cantando Por un Sueno" is a self-affirming, fist-pumping anthem; and "La Super Chica" is an affecting moment of alt-girl pop power with a hint of 80's nostalgia. Best of the bunch is "No, No, No," a glittering, break-up bachata duet featuring Aventura member Anthony "Romeo" Santos. It's one of the disc's best moments, alongside the still-affecting "Seduccion," "Olvidame" and "No Puedo Vivir Sin Verte." Also included is a sweeping club remix of the ballad "Un Alma Sentenciada," courtesy of renowned DJ duo Hex Hector and Mac Quayle. --Joey Guerra

    2 out of 5 stars hey?.......2007-04-27

I wonder why amazon did not publish the first review I've had with this album. Anyway, perhaps I was too harsh on her. Again, as I said before, the songs are good, but they are not for Thalia. Thalia sings great when she sings low because she can make her voice stronger and fuller, as in her previous albums like "Amor a la Mexicana," and "Arrasando." She is a mezzo soprano, she's no Maria Carey so it seems that she is forcing herself when she sings high notes (Olvidame, Amar sin ser Amada), which as a previous reviewer mentioned, can be quite annoying. Besides, this and the previous album "Thalia" (spanish one, not the crossover), marked her transition from latin pop-infected grooves to more universal American pop-rock music, which in my opinion, does not truly reflect her abilities as a singer and an entertainer. I've always considered her as an ambassador of latin american (mexican) language and culture to countries located as far as in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, so it's regretful that she would shift her music towards generic pop-rock.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELENT ALBUM.......2007-02-08

THIS ALBUM IS THE BEST!!! I LIKE ALL THE SONGS, IN SPECCIALLY, "NO,NO,NO" FEAT AVENTURA, I THINKS THAT IS THE BEST SONG OF THE YEAR. UN ALMA SENTENCIADA AND OLVIDAME IS THE BEST BALLAD FOR THIS DISC. AND SEDUCCION IS GREAT TOO. I THINKS THAT THIIS IS THE BEST ALBUM FROM YEAR

    3 out of 5 stars A remake? A remake of what?.......2007-02-03

Ok, somebody nees to tell EMI that what they're trying to do with Thalia is a)pushing her fans away and b)makes new, potential fans dislike her.
What is this? Sixth sense was pop enough and now a reloaded version with four songs? Why couldn't they just fit them in the next album?
From the new songs, La Super Chica has an interested feel of piano jazz (something from the cult Tori Amos fashion) and could be quite entertaining. Cantando por un sueno is nicely sang, the music is nice but I did find the lyrics slightly egocentric.Luckily, the tacky english versions of the Sexto Sentido are absent.
I always found Thalia's voice texture powerful and special, and I found her music aesthetically entertaining up to the Tu Y Yo album. Her lyrics were always cute and decent and her music had something that mainstream pop albums don't- perhaps the fact that I'm European makes latin sound exotic to my ears, as opposed to RnB, hip hop and the latest pop fashions a la Jessica Simpson. She was my number one choice when it came to party/ vivid material, but the way her studio is turning her into a product for mass consumption is not of my immediate taste.

    1 out of 5 stars why .......2006-10-15

listen, I have am not one to be a critic to spanish music because I got to enjoy this music in the latter years of 90's. me I now enjoy music from al genres that I can understand the language. saying this I say in anylanguage thalia either needs to get back to her roots and make what made her famous...to date her best album was and still is Amor a la mexicana. that is the thalia I know, this pure garbage unloaded, reloaded or super loaded. she can package it anyway she wants this album is and always will be garbage.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Thalia.......2006-09-18

The new songs added in El Sexto Sentido are maginificent. Good Job. If only there were more songs. You know how (we)your fans are greedy. Keep up the good work.I just wonder why did you remove some of the tracks that were in the original album and not put them in the Reloaded version?

    Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Thalia Zedek has charted a singular course through rock history virtually unnoticed by critics and listeners alike. Whereas each new Nick Cave release has the critics feverishly reaching for the Vaseline, Zedek's band through the '90s, Come, released a string of classic albums that were almost universally ignored. Her work in the '80s--with Dangerous Birds, Uzi, and later fronting Live Skull fared even worse. Been Here and Gone is Zedek's first solo effort, and it delivers. Her vision of what is the blues is perfectly presented on songs such as "Excommunications" and "Temporary Guest," but this is the blues like Leonard Cohen (whom Zedek covers here) and Bob Dylan are the blues--the feeling not the form. On "Strong," Zedek opens with "You're going to hell / you're gonna be living with yourself." Strong stuff indeed, but delivered in a tone more measured than maniacal and the effect is sharper for it. Zedek doesn't go in for posturing, this is the real deal and not for the weak of heart, yet those who make this journey with her are greatly rewarded by the music. Without a doubt, Been Here and Gone is among the best albums released in 2001. --Mike Johnson

5 out of 5 stars A shambling funeral procession. Sensual and sombre........2004-04-20

If Bob Dylan were murdered in some horrible, edward Gorey-like fashion and then his spirit made love to Leonard Cohen in a dream by PJ Harvey- this album might be the result of such sanguine, acrobatic copulations...

Indeed it opens up with an homage to L. Cohen- 'Eveybody Knows,' but only the single guitar line that kicks off the album is Cohen's... the rest is entirely Ms. Zedek's (though, truth be told, it sounds like Concrete Blonde's cover from the pump of the volume sndtrk.). Her voice is kin to Dylan (weary and monotone), so much so you'd think she's his little sister that someone hid away in a dark (very dark) closet for many years.

Whew... It's a mess. No arguing with that, but a sprawling, gorgeous, weary, anguish-laden mess. The kind of mess that takes your breath away, like staring out over a city late at night and having it hit you in the chest that you'll never really be able to loose yourself in someone, that love fades, honor rusts, visions curdle, dreams evaporate... Entropy has the last laugh... It's the kind of album that reminds you that we are ultimately finite and useless creatures... at least, that's what I take from it.

It's not the kind of album I can write to- to demanding, the music forces you to listen. Nor can I run or work out to it. It just sucks out your energy like some demonic sci-fi machine... I don't like `Strong,' so much... and `treacherous thing,' seemed a tad out of place too... this is a definitely a less is more scenario. Especially as most of these songs are long and lustrous (most over 5 minutes). There's much piano, tons of eerie violin and sad, sombre clean-tone guitar. The mood is a bit uneven, bit that works well to the album's advantage.

Oh, don't expect this to sound like a 'Come,' album- it just don't. There are many standout tracks and great moments. I really dig the hell out of the L. Cohen cover (Dance Me to the End of Love)- a sweet piano opening and the way it just boils away into some gypsy dance of pure lush abandonment at the end, wow. `10th Lament,' is a gorgeous instrumental piece. The cover of Luiz Bonfa's 'Manha de Carnaval,' is spellbinding and made me track down the original, it's a phenomenal closer, it calls to mind the song "masquerade,' from the 50's or 60's film of the same name. The centerpiece and the album's strongest song- a cover of Gary Gogel's (who the hell is Gary Gogel?!?!?!! I googled him awhile back and didn't come up with anything substantial- if this song is any indication, he's got some great music!) 1926- A song that just slays me ever time I hear it. The end, portion, the "God hates me, he can't feel my flesh..." Fantastic. You don't hear sentiments like that expressed so economically and poetically in this world we have inherited...

Now, I'm inclined to agree with Mr. Carragher (below), but only up to a point. This album does drain you. But in a good way. It's a great; lying on your bed, staring at your ceiling music. Maybe I'm getting old, but I don't have it in me to do that so much anymore. All in all, I'm glad I picked this up, always dug Come. It's good to hear Ms. Zedek putting out the good ish. Can't wait for more.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Convinced.......2002-09-05

First of all, hide the quaaludes before you play this CD. It is close to four stars and maybe, as with Giant Sand's CD Chore of Enchantment, I'll pull it out of the rack in a year's time and be blown away by it. For now, however, and after repeated listenings, it is frequently haunting and powerful (three consecutive cuts, Treacherous Thing, Dance Me to the End of Love, 1926, leave me drained each time I listen to them), but falls short of greatness. A big problem is that Zedek doesn't know when to end a song and two or three cuts in the last half of the CD run a good couple of minutes longer than they need to. The instrumental 10th Lament is particularly pointless. Also her own songs do not match the covers she's chosen, no surprise when you record the likes of Leonard Cohen. Still, if in her future she has an album full of songs like Excommunications and Treacherous Thing, that will be something to anticipate. Here and now, though, On Been Here and Gone, the three covers -- Dance Me to the End of Love, Manha de Carnaval, and most especially 1926 -- are what kept the CD on my personal playlist for a long time. The final refrain of 1926 "your God hates me/he can't feel my flesh/he leaves me panting like a dog/at the edge of your bed" is as stunning a lyric of obsessed love as I've heard in a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars An Affair to Remember.......2002-02-26

A friend of mine bought me this CD for my birthday. He knew I like Leonard Cohen a lot, so he ended up picking Been Here and Gone because it happened to include a cover of Dance Me to the End of Love.
Been Here and Gone is nothing short of amazing - I went from never even having heard of Thalia Zedek and firmly believeing no one could really do a Leonard Cohen song justice except Cohen himself, to being mesmerized by Zedek's voice and wishing she would record an entire album of Cohen covers. (I could see her doing almost any song of his, like, say, Ain't No Cure for Love, Bird on a Wire or Coming Back to You. But I digress.)
The songs she wrote herself are stunning as well, as are 1926 and Manha de Carnaval.
My only complaint is that on track 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9, I feel the vocals are often obscured by the instruments. Don't get me wrong; I love the arrangements, and the musicians all sound great, but I think I would have liked the end result even better if the tracks had been mixed so that the instruments complement Zedek's voice rather than compete with (and sometimes overpower) it.
Other than that, I can't say enough good things about this album. I don't think I'll grow tired of listening to it any time soon, if ever.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful - haunting - brilliant.......2001-11-17

I'm stunned. This is an amazing album.

5 out of 5 stars No Passion Without Gravity.......2001-11-05

If nothing else, Thalia Zedek's career will serve to remind the world that The Blues is more than just a foundation for Rock & Roll, but that it is primarily The Music Of Pain with its own lexicon of harmonies and rhythmic twists. "Been Here And Gone" is a superb collection of pared-down and passionate songs, organic and spacious but with an overriding sense of claustrophobia that will almost preclude it from mainstream acceptance. Zedek has an uncanny ability for conveying very specific moods in her songs, many of which tend towards the manic. This is not the most comfortable listening, but given that most works of substance require some effort on the part of the listener, it is ultimately (and perversely) extremely rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Two violins, a G clarinet and a bass guitar playing waltzes.......2005-01-31

This is another one of those Naxos discs that you don't expect, but when you hear it you think: Yes, this is it! Recorded in 1988 at the studios of the Czech recording company Opus, this disc presents music as played towards the end of the 19th century in Vienna by the Schrammel Quartet, a group which became world-famous playing a G clarinet, a bass guitar (thirteen strings and two necks!) and two violins. The music was lost for almost 80 years before being re-discovered in manuscript form by two Viennese professors; here it is played by the Thalia-Schrammeln, a quartet made up of graduates of the Vienna Musikhochschule and who have made it their task to play this music in its original form (as far as this is available), even wearing the traditional clothing during their performances (see the cover illustration). Of course, this is not "serious" music, although apparently Brahms, among others, was enamoured of it; mostly it sounds like a "pop" version of Johann Strauss Jr. with plenty of waltzes, polkas and marches, and for the uninitiated it is quite difficult to tell the pieces apart. But the recorded performance sounds really cute and definitely conveys that light-hearted, sassy Vienna feeling; the engineering is impeccable.

4 out of 5 stars Fangoria goes it alone, with good results.......2007-01-07

After a couple of successful albums produced by Carlos Jean (who also worked with Fey on her last album Faltan Lunas), Fangoria decided to wipe the slate clean, and start from ground zero. The result, El Extrano Viaje, is a mostly solid album. Their genius for mixing guitars and electronica (Electricistas, anyone?) is kicked up a notch, producing songs that are sonically dense, fresh, and more upbeat than previous works. The gloom and doom (and strident atheism) of Una Temporada en el Infierno has been mostly jettisoned. El Extrano Viaje is Fangoria settling nicely into their middle age.

The album begins with the one-two punch of Fantasmas and Criticar Por Criticar. Fantasmas starts out with about 30 seconds of whirring, foggy noise, before launching into a hypnotic beat. This is Fangoria at their best, great lyrics, and great vocal delivery by Alaska, whose singing alternates with a male voice very complimentary to hers. Criticar Por Criticar, meanwhile, is hands-down their best single since No Se Que Me Das. Everything about it is just perfect, worth the price of admission alone.

While Fantasmas and Criticar Por Criticar are excellent songs, they aren't terribly resprentative of the album as a whole. The following trio of songs (Plegarias Atendidas, El Cementario de Mis Suenos, Sin Perdon) form the core of El Extrano Viaje. Plegarias Atendidas is upbeat, retro, and guitar-laden. El Cemetario de Mis Suenos is the "heaviest" song on the album, a jawbreaking flood of electric bass that's surprisingly light-hearted in spirit. Sin Perdon seems more of a coda to El Cementario, keeping the energy level high.

Then, things slow down with A Fuerza De Vivir. The best way I can describe it is film noir. If Tarantino directed a film in Spanish, this would be on the soundtrack. It goes down like a dry martini.

After this diversion, the atmosphere switches back with Si Lo Sabe Dios Que Se Entere El Mundo. When I read the title on the back of the CD, I thought surely it would be a trademark Fangoria foray into atheist sentiment. Turns out, it's about telling your secrets, and not feeling embarrassed. By the way, the opening electronic hook sounds like it was lifted from the remix of Yesterday When I was Mad by the Pet Shop Boys.

The reason I didn't give El Extrano Viaje five stars is that it kind of stalls in the latter half. Ni Contigo, Ni Sin Ti is nice, but what's up with the generic house beats? Fangoria can whip up better a better hook than that. There's also the problem that some songs start to sound factory-assembled, poured into the same mold as their far better cousins in the early part of the album. The only song I can pick from the last four tracks that's worthwhile is Estes Donde Estes. True, it suffers again from a rather unoriginal electro hook, but it's the most danceable track of the whole album, like Miro La Vida Pasar from the last album.

All told, this is very impressive for a band not content with resting on their laurels. I hope Fangoria will treat us with other good albums for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Fangoria Is Better Than Fine Wine!.......2006-12-28

Wow! Olvido and Ignacio do it again! I am amazed by their talent and the superb quality of their sound. Pet Shop Boys get out of the way. This is by far one of Spanish pop's elite! Fangoria takes electronic pop to the next level, it is Avant Gard, progressive and as always, way ahead of its time, like it was back in the 80's and like it will be 10 years from now. If you like electronic music with substance, then Fangoria is your best bet. Some of the highlights of this album are: Si lo sabe Dios que se entere el mundo, Ni contigo ni sin ti, Plegarias atendidas and Estes donde estes. YOU MUST BUY IT...IT'S WORTH IT AND YOU WILL NEVER REGRET ENTERING FANGORIA'S WORLD!

      5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2006-12-23

Every song on this album is a juicy cocktail of existential loss, bad relationships and extraordinary decadence. The production is top notch, the music is provocative and the album is tight, the way an excellent album should be.

The back up vocalist in "Nada Más Que Añadir", for example, enhances the subtle resignation in Alaska's voice. She is drawing the line in the sand and sticking to her guns. She will not waste any more time with seeds of doubt or mind games. Though she sounds sad, the back up vocalist essentially cries out, deal with it!

The song, "Criticar Por Criticar", is a catchy tune. It's about the nasty habit of tearing other people down for pleasure, or, more telling, insecurity. Fangoria share with us mere mortals that they are guilty of the latter. Or are they? This is their most tongue in cheek song ever.

"Plegarias Atendidas" describes the illusory benefits of answered prayers and the pitfalls of jaded desire.

"A Fuerza de Vivir" has a great subtle guitar solo that bridges the main body of the song to the final coda. It's an organic element in an album that is primarily informed by techno and club music. This guitar riff is a subtle reminder of their most rock oriented work in the mid to later 80s, the apex of their popularity in Mexico.

With these songs, I get the impression that Olvido and Nacho are more awake than ever. Not that they EVER rested on their laurels. But they have achieved such a profound understanding of their character, aesthetic sensibilities and human frailty that you can't help but marvel at their artistic development. In "A Fuerza de Vivir" the word "vivir" (to live) is paired up with the word "resistir" (to resist). Essentially, by sheer force of will one eventually learns to resist. These fine artists have been doing this since their early days as Kaka DeLuke in the late 70's. But whereas they did it in a more inconsequential way then, now they do so with eyes (and intellect) wide open. The rebellious spirit is there, but now it's more sophisticated, more direct and more transparent.

All the songs in this album are recommended, and some are laced with a curveball. For example, "Estés Donde Estés", is a kiss off telling an individual that wherever he is, Olvido will make every effort to get him to hate her. In other words, if the victim is indifferent, she will make sure to change all that. It's wicked and it's pure dark genius.

This, along with Gustavo Cerati's "Ahi Vamos", are my two favorite rock/pop en español albums this year (2006). They are both strokes of genius from artists who've been around for over 20 years.

So here's a toast to the veterans. Cheers!

Thalia is back in her element--thank goodness--on El Sexto Sentido, her return to a Spanish-language studio album after a gap of three years. The Mexican mogul faltered on her 2003 English-language debut, which was overproduced yet undernourished in terms of showcasing the fiesty, fun persona that has made her a star. El Sexto Sentido finds the singer returning to form, even if it's not as smashing a success as previous discs Amor a la Mexicana and Arrasando. There's still plenty to like, including the rock-tinged "Amar Sin Ser Amada" and "24,000 Besos," originally an Italian pop hit. Much of the album is sprinkled with electronic dance grooves ("Seduccion," "Un Sueno Para Dos"), but there's also a trio of sterling ballads ("Olvidame," "No Puedo Vivir Sin Verte," "Un Alma Sentenciada") that showcase Thalia's growing skills as a vocal interpreter. El Sexto Sentido also includes Thalia's coquettish take on Tejano icon Selena's "Amor Prohibido" (originally included on Selena Vive!). Three English-language tracks find Thalia improving on--but still not quite mastering--her English. Guess you can't have it all.--Joey Guerra

1 out of 5 stars Que Pasa, Thalia?.......2006-03-13

I think this album sucks. Except for Sabe bien. Which is the only non old sounding song of the lot. Thalia needs to move out of the eighties with her muusic and into the new milleum. At least f she is going to make something sound eighties , which 24,0000 mil besos sounds she should update the sound a bit. She needs some innovations. She cannot survive in the past and she is struggling to find he footing in the present. Does she want to sing rock? pop? baladas? She needs someone one her side that can combine what she likes, namely rock, with what she is good at-POP! Shakira has been successful at doing this, but thaly needs to find her own angle to work. Estefano is Ok, but it seems like hes's working faithful with whatever she divulges about her life insetad of expanding her thouughts. I mean, it isn't his fault, he's working tailor making these songs to her personality. However, they need to sound fresherr, cutting edge. Thaly has been in this business too long to refry the same material. I don;t see how this is so diffrent from Arrasando or Thalia (Spanish). Come on thaly, its not ALL about business. Where is the music? Where is the alma. I am dissapointed at this album fro m someone who should be a pro by now. This sucks. Get in touch with what's happening. Don't just keep working with the same people...expand yourself. Theonly song I liked was accion y reaccion and that was from her greateset hits album. Jeesh. Don't work with the producing stars of yesterday when you can work wit h the one of today or tommorrow. I don't care how many people Corey Rooney or Estefano has produced, I just care that your album sounds cutting edge --not like a flashback from he ninetes or eighties. Amar sin ser Amada was to weak for the US market. None of these songs stand out. Thalia needs to be an innovator ya! What is she waiting for? And she needs to embrace her grown up voice. her higher ranges or notes can being annoying after a while. When she sings at a lower register it is great.

4 out of 5 stars Bubblegum Princess Back with More.......2006-03-03

Thalia has always been poppy, accessible, and just fun. She's not a singer that you would expect to drag you through pretentious things like concept albums or the like. Taken in that context, this album, like her other stuff, is enjoyable. She's got the fun club-scene songs like 'Seduccion' with some balads thrown in for good measure. Plus she's beautiful. SHE'S THALIA people!
