Eddie Dee - One of PR's unsung MC heroes.......2006-12-15
When I heard him drop "Quitate Tu" with that all-star crew over both a reggaeton and a salsa track, I was sold. Talk about a posse cut. I lost count as to how many MCs are on that song. Then I picked up the LP and was blown away. Brother Eddie is all about S-K-I-L-L-S. I know I may be speaking heresy, but I was thrilled to hear more beats than just Luny Tunes (the Neptunes of reggaeton) all day long. They're talented, to be sure, but it's great to hear an artist of Eddie's caliber over a variety of tracks to demonstrate his versatility. Having him put out an album with this mix tape sort of format was a dope idea, because it kept things fresh and you never knew what to expect from track to track. My only complaint is that the album left me wanting to hear more Eddie Dee, whether solo or on a posse cut, sending me to El Abayarde, where he and Tego set off the real tiradera on "No Me Explotan". Can't wait to hear more from Eddie soon.
On to the rest of the tracks:
1) Taladro: A dope track with the necessary sexual doble sentido/double entendre imagery. Funny as hell and Daddy Yankee always sounds better to me in collaboration with other artists rather than solo.
2) Locura Automatica: Eddie makes use of La Secta to branch out, but still retains his hold on the track. This is about the best reggaeton/rock hybrid I've heard, because they're not the easiest styles to reconcile; but by leaving in the strings, it isn't completely overpowered by the dembow beat.
3) Quitate Tu: covered above
4) Cuando Es... Wao!: Listen to Eddie's lyrical delivery. Even we he's talking about gatas sandungueras, his flow and phrasing are always different and clever.
5) Donde Hubo Fuego (Pa atras, pa'lante): El Cangri does well, but he's overpowered by Eddie, Tego, Vico and Voltio's lyrics on the rest of this platter. The bridge and chant are pretty dope, though. Yankee's dope, but he's way too focused on the pop-flavored posse cuts. I think he'd continue to grow lyrically if he keeps hanging out with Eddie, Tego & Voltio rather than churning out dancefloor scorchers like an assembly line.
6) Punto y Aparte: Tego comes with the bachata guitar melody layered over the dembow. Too bad this wasn't a duet, because Tego and Eddie always rip it on wax together. "Calle pero elegante."
7) Se Te Apago el Bling-Bling: Vico C brings some of the best lyrics on the album and freaks this beat that is part hip-hop, part crunk. Dope. Vico is STILL in the game.
8) Tienes que Hacerlo: Zion y Lennox are now fully out of the shadow of Yaga & Mackie, but I'd like to see them mix up the "Zion singing, Lennox toasting" formula. Without radically different beats, their songs are all in the danger of sounding the same. The skills are there, you just wish they'd gamble a little more with their sound.
9) Tu y Yo: Nicky Jam. Who is this cat, the LL Cool J of reggaeton? On every track he's macking, stealing someone's woman/wife/girlfriend/whatever. How about a straight track that demonstrates S-K-I-L-L-S?
10) Si No Cuidas Tu Mujer: Eddie brings the hip-hop/reggaeton/bolero combination to a more satisfying execution than other cats who have tried it in the game. He lets the band handle the balladeering and focuses on lyrics. An MC should not try to break out like he's Luther Vandross unless he's doing it for gritty effect or having fun (think Biz Markie).
11) Atrevida Bandolera: Voltio as a guest is a welcome addition. Even on this dance floor track the skills shine through, especially when the lyrics are so funny, not just traca traca traca y lo mismo. The only thing that is not up to par on this track is the backing track - too heavy on the Nintendo sound effects. While dancehall and reggaeton have always made use of those sound effects, heavy use of the higher-end sounds makes your tune tinny-sounding and lacking in gravity or heft. These lyrics deserve a heavier beat.
12) Que Es La Que Hay?: Ivy Queen, reggaeton's MC Lyte, never disappoints. It's dope to hear a woman who's standing on skills, not T&A.
13) Nebuleando Conmigo/Sueltate: Johnny Prez is always associated with some good artists and has a cool flow, but he should pick up a few pointers from Eddie in terms of lyrical content.
14) Medley 2006: Wiso G's flow is ill with that hybrid NYC Old School/dancehall beat. It's dope and takes you back to the old 1986-1990 Sleeping Bag Records flavor.
15) 12 Meses: Gallego brings an ominous voice and thought-provoking lyrics. A short track but well worth the effort. I'd like to hear Gallego with Eddie, Tego and Julio Voltio on a posse cut.
16) Sacame El Guante: Great anti-violence, anti-authority song, where he handles things lyrically without being one of these big blowhards ranting about how tough he is. The last thing the world needs is another Tupcac/50 Cent/Joey Crack cardboard cutout, because that stuff gets old. The ill classical violin sample puts things in a kind of eerie horror movie vein.
17) Censurarme (Remix): I like these lyrics a LOT. I remember seeing the video for this a couple of years ago, but could never find it on an album. Eddie brings conscious lyrics (something a lot of reggaetoneros don't do). It's dope to hear more on wax than just sandungeo, sandungeo. People do more than just dance all day long, you know. He points out racism, hypocrisy of economic and political elites, and more.
18) Quitate Tu: above
