It's hard to think of a more restless pop album than
Juan Manuel. Stylistically, this disc is all over the place. Despite its lounge and kitsch elements, the spirit of this wildly eclectic CD is closer to playful exuberance than it is to camp. The opener, "Nordic Laser," recalls both New Orleans piano man Esquerita and the Terry Riley/John Cale collaboration
Church of Anthrax. The mellow and funky "Shampoo" is propelled along by a groovy tabla part. "Human Disco Ball" and "Bassass (International Stereo)" feature four-on-the-floor rhythms and vocoder vocals, while "Supercombo Electronico" rocks out, Beastie Boys-style. "Arpoador" sounds like the Miles Davis classic
In a Silent Way, but with an added layer of Latin and Indian percussion. "Graceland" manages to squeeze in an accordion and a sample of the Gil Evans Orchestra and still make it work. You name a musical genre and there's a good chance it's represented here. "Good Bye Happy Farm," the disc's closer, not only sports some nice old-fashioned Southern soul organ, but includes barnyard animal chatter, too. It's as if this duo from Monterrey, Mexico, didn't want to leave anything out. A perfect album for your next party.

Customer Reviews:
Down to earth Flamenco.......2007-05-12
The performers on this collection are the cream of the crop of grass roots Flamenco. El Loreno's voice is simply mystical. La Paquera holds in her feeling the power and pasion of Flamenco in one person. if you love Flamenco this is a must.
This is not Gypsy Kings..........2007-05-07
This music was not at all what i expected. I was expecting a bit more fun guitar and such, but the singing is what blew it: it sounded like so much screeching to me. Played once. It hurt my ears. Now, its collecting dust.
superb flamenco classics.......2007-03-12
If you want to hear flamenco at its very best you can't do better than to buy this CD. Manitas de Plata was the best of the flamenco guitarists of the 60's and La Paquera de Jerez was the signature female flamenco vocalist of her generation. The other artists on this CD are also the best of their times. Flamenco of our day still has technical virtuousity, but I can't help but think that something essential has been lost, something to do with the soul of this music form.
Beautiful Songs.......2006-02-23
This CD is perfect CD for me. Traditional flamenco music.
I enjoy this CD a lot.
Love it.......2005-11-16
I always loved gipsy music and unfortunately it's not easy to come by a good recording with the 'real' gipsy music. Well this one is the real deal.
Good recording - good music.

Customer Reviews:
The most noble voice.......2004-05-28
Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.
PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN.......2002-01-08
FOR A LONG TIME "SONGS OF SPAIN" HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF CLASSICAL, POPULAR, SECULAR AND RELIGIOUS (CHRISTIAN AND SEPHARDIC) SPANISH SONGS. DE LOS ANGELES DEFIES A RIVAL IN THIS GENRE. DE LARROCHA, SORIANO AND ZANETTI PROVIDE UNEQUALED ACCOMPANIEMENTS. THE RECORDINGS ARE SECOND ONLY TO LIFE PERFORMANCES. I UNDERSTAND THAT EMI INTENDS TO TAKE THIS SET OUT OF PUBLICATION. PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN! I JUST PURCHASED MY THIRD SET FROM AMAZON AND I TREASURE IT AS MUCH AS MY FIRST!
luminous artistry from a genius.......2000-12-26
the vocal artist of vocal artistsdisplays her absolutely gorgeous voice and musical understanding of spanish feeling with a warmth that is unmatched anywhere.the only thing better was to hear her in person!
A special Dignity and an Unfailing Beauty of Voice........2000-09-17
This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

Beautiful.......2001-09-29
This is a must have if you are not familiar with zarzuela (Madrid's response to Vienna's operetta). It's a nice combination of arias sung by Caballe in beautiful voice and joined by her husband tenor Bernabe Marti for the duets. The CD comes with translations for non Spanish speaking which will greatly improve your satisfaction.
Caballe is in as beautful voice as ever and feels at home with this non very taxing repertoire. She doesn't overindulge in her other times frequent "floatiness" and is very expressive throughout. Thogh sometimes when some coloratura is needed she tends to drop the consonants blurring her enunciation of the words. We are used to this from her opera recordings though she's not as bad as Sutherland.
Marti is a nice tenor but is not in the same league as Caballe. That's why he never got star recognition though he made a few recordings whith his wife, like Bellini's "Il Pirata". His is a lyrical tenor, a little throaty but with nice projection of the sound. He sounds a little strained over the "passagio" but hits all the notes. More importantly, he compensates for his lack of vocal lustre with burning impersonations of his characters. Passionate and burning in some, tender and caressing in others. In this respect is better than his wife who is a little more doll like hidding behind her vocal resources. So I specially enjoyed the many and varied duets in this recording.
Strongly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Ideal performance for an unusual repertoire.......2007-05-28
So unusual as Latin American music from the 17th and 18th centuries. The composers' names have never been heard by the average music lover, even in Spain. But the musical material is surprisingly worthy, it should not be forgotten that musicians from Spain were continuously bringing their knowledge, and new styles, to the colonies.
Jeffrey Skidmore has made a deep research on this repertoire, including in situ revision of sources and contacts with many local musicologists. The choir and baroque ensemble, Ex Cathedra, are the ideal performers.
A fantastic program of early music from Latin America.......2006-07-10
This is a rich and varied program of sacred and secular music from Latin America composed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This CD is actually a "sequel" to the "New World Symphonies" CD, released in 2003. If you enjoyed that program, you probably have already purchased this CD. If you missed the earlier release, I would start with this volume over the first, as it is more varied and contains material that is not available elsewhere. Here is some brief background information on the significant composers represented on this program:
Juan Gutierrez de Padilla (c. 1590-1664): Born in Spain, moved to Mexico in 1622
Juan de Araujo (1646-1712): Born in Spain, moved to Peru as a child, composed in Bolivia
Francisco Lopez Capillas (c. 1615-1673): Probably born in Spain, worked under Padilla in Mexico
Domenico Zipoli (1688-1726): Born in Tuscany, studied under Scarlatti, moved to Paraguay in 1716
Although this music, temporally, is from the Baroque period, much of the style reminds me of the renaissance. For instance, many of the tracks are accompanied by cornetts and sackbuts, something I consider part of the renaissance tradition. As with the "New World Symphonies" CD, the program begins with "Hanacpachap cussicuinin" an anonymous processional written in the Quechua language. This piece represents the earliest written polyphony in South America. On the present CD, the orchestration is altered and new versus are used in comparison with the version present on the first volume. This really is a fantastic piece, so it's no wonder it is reprised on the current volume.
The other music on the CD ranges from meditative choral pieces (Track 14) to lively dance pieces (Track 8) accompanied by a wide variety of percussion, including castanets and rain sticks(!). The pieces by Zipoli and Sumaya are firmly planted in the Baroque tradition. In fact, you might mistake Zipoli's 12 minute "Beatus vir" (scored for Baroque ensemble, solo soprano and chorus) for one of Vivaldi's sacred compositions. While the vibrant villancicos of Araujo, and the choral music of Capillas (think Gabrieli with less brass), remind me much more of the renaissance period.
Araujo, in particular, seems to be a major voice whose sacred and secular music should be more widely known. "Salga el torillo hosquillo" (Track 4), which is attributed to both Araujo and Salazar, would be a real crowd pleaser and is one of my favorites on this CD. Likewise, Araujo's "Ay, Andar" (Track 15), with its mesmerizing rhythm alterations between 3 + 3 and 2 + 2 + 2 patterns and "everything but the kitchen sink" orchestration, really is interesting. The musicians really have fun with this one - maybe a little too much fun ("Ay, Ay, Aye" lady, I'm talking to you).
This is a great CD, and is highly recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in early music. Full translations in English included within the CD notes. If you like this program, I would also pickup the Missa Mexicana CD recorded by the Harp Consort, featuring the compositions of Padilla.

Beautiful music from Latin America.......2006-05-27
As the earlier reviewer said, this is a worthy companion to Ex Cathedra's "New World Symphonies".
I gave the other recording 6 stars out of 5, but only give this one a mere (!) 5 stars - simply because a couple of the soloists on a couple of pieces in this recording have a bit more of an 'operatic' sound than I care for. ~ But that's a minor quibble, and something that most people wouldn't mind, or even notice.
As I said on the related review of "New World Symphonies", this music often has a sense of ecstatic dancing, to my ears anyway.
These are the first records I've ever heard from the genre of Renaissance and Baroque music from Latin America, and I look forward to exploring the other CDs that are available.
This CD will be all things to many music lovers.......2006-01-20
Sequels most often seem to turn out disappointments. Luckily, that isn't the case with "Moon, Sun & All Things," which is a follow-up to Ex Cathedra's "New World Symphonies." The musical experience may in fact be of a higher order this time around. Whereas the first disc featured some fairly average settings of portions of the Latin mass, the new disc follows the program of a Vespers service, and Jeffrey Skidmore chooses wisely and well to fill out the program. I hope it doesn't show undo bias to say that the finest work here is by a composer with the strongest bona fides as far as European musical training is concerned. It is also by far the longest and most ambitious: the "Beatus Vir" by Domenico Zipoli, a student of Alessandro Scarlatti. Living and working Paraguay after 1716, Zipoli creates a work that reminds me more of Vivaldi than of Scarlatti. Unlike the usually gentler emotional complexion of Scarlatti's music (what I know of it, anyway), this has some of the dash and fire of Vivaldi's own famous setting, right down to the angry vocalization on the words "dentibus suis fremet" ("he [the wicked] shall gnash with his teeth"). Equally Vivaldian, and almost as lovely, is Zipoli's "Ave maris stella." Well, lovely, that is, except for the inclusion of the weird and wonderful tromba marina, which sounds like a cross between a crumhorn and a kazoo. But what other instrument to use in a piece dedicated to the "Star of the Sea" (a.k.a. the Virgin Mary)?
Zipoli may provide the most polished music; however, "Moon, Sun & All Things" celebrates more than mere polish. The anonymous "Hanacpachap cussicuinin" from Peru has the haunting, otherworldly quality of the best Renaissance polyphony. And Manuel de Sumaya, although a native of Mexico City, reminds one again of Vivaldi. Sumaya's setting of "Albricias mortales!" ("Rejoice, mortals!") is bracing, with its solo trumpet and massed choral entries.
Interspersed with all this skillfully written liturgical music are popular choral works called villancios. These include Diego de Salazar's rambunctious "Salga el torillo hosquillo!" about bullfight and Juan de Araujo's jubilant celebration of the birth of Jesus, "Ay, andar!" Incidentally, the same composer contributes one of the more rarefied works to this collection, a beautiful--though rather archaic-sounding--setting of "Dixit Dominus."
So for sheer variety, this CD has much to offer. Even better, that variety is matched by the high quality of most of the compositions. For Jeffrey Skidmore, who tracked down this music in libraries of North and South America, the production is clearly a labor of love. And the love shows through; Ex Cathedra performs with joy and reverence throughout, and the results are wonderfully enjoyable. The recording, too, is even finer than that accorded the first CD. There is just enough reverberation to suggest the cathedrals of the New World, where this music would have been played and sung, but everything is crystal clear as well, including that wonderfully exotic percussion. Bravo, Hyperion!

Pifarro's Best Album!.......2003-07-08
Although Pifarro has released some wonderful stuff in the past couple of years, "Los Ministriles" is still, in my opinion, their best offering to date. Simply, this recording is a delight, and although I've heard it dozens of times, it always remains fresh and enjoyable upon each re-aquaintance. There is something about music from the Spanish renaissance that sets it apart from almost anything being written in Europe at the time, and Pifarro captures the fun, spontanaity and pure beauty that this music exudes from note one. Highly recommended.
Fun, syncopated music from Piffaro, the Renaissance Band........2002-11-25
The full title of this album is "Los Ministriles: Spanish Renaissance Wind Music", and it features a wide variety of genteel and folksy tunes that would have been played by multi-instrumentalist minstrels employed by the nobles and clergy of the time. Originally founded in 1980 as the Philadelphia Renaissance Wind Band, Piffaro took its current name from the Italian version of "Pfeifer", or piper. And indeed, this group boasts a wide variety of wind instruments: entire families of shawms, recorders and crumhorns; along with sackbuts, a bass dulcian and various bagpipes; accompanied by Spanish essentials such as harp, vihuela, guitar and percussion. The lively and intricate syncopation of Renaissance Spanish compositions lends a distinctive character to this CD in comparison with the group's other releases, which are also very good. Try their Flemish and German recordings too--"A Flemish Feast: Flemish Renaissance Wind Music" and "Stadtpfeiffer: Music of Renaissance Germany".
Renaissance Music is Anything but Boring!.......2000-03-20
I will admit an immediate bias for this recording, as my Renaissance Music instructor's husband is one of the players. However, leaving that fact out entirely, this disc, like all of Piffaro's recordings, is a joy. I listen to them everywhere, especially when I need to stay awake on long drives. To hear such difficult ensemble instruments as shawms, krumhorns and recorders in a resonant environment, played perfectly in tune is rare. This particular disc ranges from organ-like works for recorder consort to rousing dances like ¡Si abrá in este baldres! Unlike CDs that contain lengthy masses with no lighter interludes (although these are equally gorgeous, especially the Gabrielli Consort's Moralès Mass for the Feast of St. Isidore), Piffaro's CDs are widely varied in terms of instrumentation, style, tempo and inflection. I have played this for many people who claim to not like early music and have had much favorable response, not to mention the personal enjoyment and sheer fun!
Fun music.......1998-11-21
Much of this CD is typical Renaissance music with period instruments: a delight to listen to, but sounding a lot like other Renaissance delights. What I found really unique is that this is the first selection of Renaissance music which I'm familiar with that includes bagpipes among the instuments. Crumhorns and sackbuts are nice but familiar; the bagpipe selections blew me away.

Lively and cheerful!.......2002-11-29
This gem of a CD is the South American counterpart to Chatham Baroque's other release of Hispanic music, "Espanoleta!". "Sol y Sombra", which translates as "Sun and Shade", not only contains instrumental music from the accomplished quartet of string players, but also features the spirited, operatic voice of soprano Carol Ann Allred. Guest percussionist Danny Mallon spices things up with frequent accompaniments of castanets, tambourine and drum. Of all Chatham Baroque's excellent releases, I find this recording, along with "Espanoleta!", to be the most fun to listen to. For more early Hispanic music from the New World, try "Missa Mexicana" by Andrew Lawrence-King and the Harp Consort, and "El Milagro de Guadalupe" by Savae.
shadows dancing on the walls.......2001-04-21
I've been listening to my copy of "Sol y Sombra" by the Chatham Baroque all night...
It is one heck of a recording. Sun and Shade indeed! This collection of secular and sacred music from the Latin American baroque period is outstanding.
This is music that one can slip into like a trustworthy pair of old slippers. "Sol y Sombra" is worth meditating upon; but at the same time is the kind of music one can play in the background with the repeat button on for hours as you converse late into the night with Good friends.
Psalm 68:25 says: "The singers went on, the musicians after them, In the midst of the maidens beating tambourines." I imagine the same kind of scene here...shadows dancing on the walls--cast there by the firelight...the alternately reflective and then lively music driving them on.
The playing and singing are lovely. Carol Ann Allred joins Custer LaRue in my pantheon of favorite singers on the Dorian label.
This the music of a people that was moved by the presence of God in the midst of all their imperfections. I can feel it...so will you.
"Bless God in the congregations, Even the LORD, you who are of the fountain of Israel." (Psalm 68:26)
Get a copy of "Sol y Sombra" and see for yourself.
VERY GOOD INTERPRETATIONS.......2000-04-12
GOOD QUALITY, PRETTY SOUND ...BUT A LITTLE CONFUSED MIX OF PERIODS AND COMPOSERS...DESPITE ALL, IT IS GOOD TO HAVE IN YOUR BAROQUE COLLECTION
Sensuous, soulful, spirited..........1999-08-22
Sensuous, soulful, and spirited are not qualities that I usually associate with baroque music. This recording by Chatham Baroque is an amazingly refreshing example of baroque at it's best. This is the best CD I've bought this year!
