It was not their first collaboration but "Perfecta Combinacion" was aptly titled. The late Pete "Conde" Rodriguez' smoky, powerful and ever-soulful vocals were perfectly complimented by Johnny Pacheco's conjunto. This CD's standouts are "Sonero", "Como Cocina La Gorda" and the perennial favorite "La Esencia Del Guaguanco". This is classic '70s tipico-flavored Salsa at its best.

About as hip an early music recording as you could imagine.......2003-02-07

A radio station today played Michael Praetorius' Dances from Terpsichore, and remembering I had this very very funny treatment of early music, I listened to this again. It is every bit as melodic when it's serious, with all the right instrumentation (recorders and such), but then every once in a while it takes these strange, surprising turns which make you laugh. It's not as silly as, say, PDQ Bach -- no, it's actually pretty earnest -- it's just that they weave in all these other types of music, and instruments (although they never go electric -- maybe the buzz saw is an electric one, but there are also gasoline buzz saws, right?).

Hilarious.......2001-01-10

This is one of the most hysterically funny things I've ever heard, especially since I was not at all prepared for it. I in fact just wrote a new work (for strings and harp) based on the Folia theme, and purchased this sort of as a reference - the Latin titles leading me to believe I was going to hear authentic, ancient versions of the theme -- indeed, the cover is misleading in this regard too. And I suppose they are in there somewhere, in between the tabla and Klezmer band.

What makes it funny is that Paniagua keeps pulling back to the lutes and recorders when you least expect it (such as right after the previously mentioned attack on the harpsichord with a buzz saw), so rather than shocking you with the new sounds, he stands it on it's head by surprising you with the old.

Early music meets Dada.......1998-10-13

This recording starts out as a typical early-music performance. The first clue that all is not what it seems is when the tabla player appears, uttering the usual rapid-fire syllables as he goes (da digadigadigadiga din, da digadigadigadiga da!). The music gets progressively odder after that, including what sounds like a chainsaw attacking a harpsichord and various automotive sounds. There are also several percussive surprises that will give your sound system a real workout.

Almost everyone for whom I have played this disc has the same reaction: ``That's really weird. Where can I get a copy?'' You have been warned.

Palmieri "A Milestone Recording".......2007-03-23

An excellent recording by Eddie Palmieri & company. In reality, Palmieri has been amazingly consistent with his musical quality. Pick from any of his recordings and you'll find (with very few exceptions), his work to be always top notch. In this album, recorded in 1964, Palmieri & Conjunto La Perfecta cooks it up just right. The arrangements are clear and focused and suprisingly, do not sound dated at all. The brass section is tight and though there are no extended solos (that would come in later releases) they more than make up for it in harmonic interplay. The percussion section rivals the best of any group past or present. What you get here is conjunto workmanship at it's best. A beautiful album, well put together and crisply recorded. A young Ismael Quintana is heard on vocals doing what he has always done best, Sonear with sabor y dulzura. One of the best albums released by one of Palmieri's best bands. You can't go wrong with Palmieri and this one is no exception. Get this one!!!

Debut Album.......2006-02-28

Bought this album on LP when first released. Without checking the album, my recollection is it's Eddie's debut. Many reviews on Amazon about which Palmieri album is best introduction. I'd pick this one for obvious reasons but also because every track is a gem. Also note that Eddie dropped the trumpets after this album for his subsequent two-trombone style.

I have an extensive collection of "salsa" albums from the golden age (50's through 70's) before salsa romantica diluted this most viscerally exciting of all music. This collection includes almost all of the output of Puente, Barretto, Palmieri, Santamaria, Cuba, ... I can go on and on. In retrospect, Palmieri was to me the King ... with Barretto not far behind. That helps characterize my tastes for you. If you're resonant with that, I highly recommend you get everything available that Eddie ever recorded!

An all-time Salsa essential. An undisputed classic........2004-08-23

Because so many of Eddie's recordings for the Tico and Alegre labels are undisputed classics, it's extremely daunting to choose one over all the others (most are excellent). This one, however, features the two-trombone lineup and most of La Perfecta's peerless musicians (Barry Rogers, Bobby Rodriguez, Tommy Lopez, etc.) and the vocal spice and improvisations of the great Ismael Quintana. Buy it while you still can.

A classic.......2000-09-13

Eddie brought attention to the two-trombone horn section with this group. His salsa work is some of the best. This is a great introduction.
