Lively and cheerful!.......2002-11-29

This gem of a CD is the South American counterpart to Chatham Baroque's other release of Hispanic music, "Espanoleta!". "Sol y Sombra", which translates as "Sun and Shade", not only contains instrumental music from the accomplished quartet of string players, but also features the spirited, operatic voice of soprano Carol Ann Allred. Guest percussionist Danny Mallon spices things up with frequent accompaniments of castanets, tambourine and drum. Of all Chatham Baroque's excellent releases, I find this recording, along with "Espanoleta!", to be the most fun to listen to. For more early Hispanic music from the New World, try "Missa Mexicana" by Andrew Lawrence-King and the Harp Consort, and "El Milagro de Guadalupe" by Savae.

I've been listening to my copy of "Sol y Sombra" by the Chatham Baroque all night...

It is one heck of a recording. Sun and Shade indeed! This collection of secular and sacred music from the Latin American baroque period is outstanding.

This is music that one can slip into like a trustworthy pair of old slippers. "Sol y Sombra" is worth meditating upon; but at the same time is the kind of music one can play in the background with the repeat button on for hours as you converse late into the night with Good friends.

Psalm 68:25 says: "The singers went on, the musicians after them, In the midst of the maidens beating tambourines." I imagine the same kind of scene here...shadows dancing on the walls--cast there by the firelight...the alternately reflective and then lively music driving them on.

The playing and singing are lovely. Carol Ann Allred joins Custer LaRue in my pantheon of favorite singers on the Dorian label.

This the music of a people that was moved by the presence of God in the midst of all their imperfections. I can feel it...so will you.

GOOD QUALITY, PRETTY SOUND ...BUT A LITTLE CONFUSED MIX OF PERIODS AND COMPOSERS...DESPITE ALL, IT IS GOOD TO HAVE IN YOUR BAROQUE COLLECTION

Sensuous, soulful, spirited..........1999-08-22

Sensuous, soulful, and spirited are not qualities that I usually associate with baroque music. This recording by Chatham Baroque is an amazingly refreshing example of baroque at it's best. This is the best CD I've bought this year!

Vicentico's open minded approach to music.......2005-08-10

During my last stay in Argentina half a year ago I read about Los Rayos from Vicentico, to me an unknown artist. Ever since then I have been playing this record many times with many of my friends and litte son (he loves the fast rhythmic song "Tiburon" (Shark)). The record gives you a wide variety of modern latin music, there is some salsa, cumbia (opening song "Los Caminos de la Vida"), pop songs and also folkloric sounds. Above all the song writing is of a very high level, original and never boring. Vicentico has defintely stolen my heart with this disc.

One of the new best Latin American soloist.......2005-07-31

If you never purchased an album by Vicentico, purchase his two works as a soloist, "Vicentico" and "Los rayos" and save some time to the music store. Each album is so good that after listening to just one, you will go back to the store to get the other one!. Vicentico was the lead singer of "Los Fabulosos Cadillas" the best ska band in Latin America. With the years, they moved from Ska to other rhytms, from latin, rock, tropical, etc. They were a superb band. After Vicentico decided to go solo, I tought, and I think every other follower of his work, he will do another "Fabulosos" band. Damm!, we were all wrong!. He showed on his two works how to mix almost all of latin american rhytms in two more than great albums. I have a huge collection of rock in spanish albums and his work is some of the best in my collection. I think some of the best works by a latin american artist in the last years. Buy both of Vicentico's albums. If you never heard of his previous band, get "Vasos Vacios" by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs., a collection of their greatest hits.

Good cd, with some great songs worth hearing..........2005-03-08

Vicentico is an Argentinian artist who before trying his luck as a soloist was part of a really wonderful band, "Los Fabulosos Cadillac". "Los Rayos" is already his second album: the first was "Vicentico". In an interview, he said that he chose the name of the album on a whim, and that the title can mean something different to everybody: "Me gusta la idea de 'Los rayos'. No tiene un sentido que pueda ser pensado. Las cosas que me gustan tienen que ver más con un conocimiento oculto de las cosas. Son simplemente ideas o imágenes que tiñen al disco. Uno dice 'los rayos' y cada cual se imagina lo que quiere. Cada persona tiene una idea diferente de las cosas".

I found two of the songs included in this cd specially good: "Los caminos de la vida" and "Tiburón". I also like the fact that "Los Rayos" includes a collaboration of Mexican singer Julieta Venegas, an artist whose work I appreciate.

On the whole, this cd is interesting, but I cannot guarantee that you will love it, and that is the reason why I only give it 3 starts out of five. On the other hand, if I could get my hands on a "Vicentico's greatest hits album" that unfortunately doesn't exist yet, and that included the two songs I mentioned above, and "Se Despierta la Ciudad", "Culpable" and "Algo Contigo" from Vicentico's previous album, I would recommend it quite loudly to all those who cared to hear :)

So, it is up to you. If you want, wait (a long time) for a future release of Vicentico's most popular songs, or try to hear at least some of his songs now. Your choice...

los rayos exceeds my highest expectations.......2004-10-24

Vicentico's debut was outstanding, but Los Rayos proves that Vicentico is a formidable but accessable force of nature that had me hooked from the first note: with the complex composition of El Cielo that literally made my heart burst to the minimalisic/bare bones "country" influenced Soy Feliz. Vicentico's Los Rayos feels like sunshine from the soul mixed with the fury of thunderstorm.

Great addition to your music collection. Both for Vicentico as for Los Cadillacs fans. Here you have everything you could expect from Vicentico's creativity and talent: from intimate and very personal songs like "La libertad" y "El barco" to party-esque (and Cadillac styled songs) like "Tiburón".

Great stuff, highly recommended.

Some things just get better with time, like good wine, or songs of Joaquin Sabina. Enters Vicentico. Gone is the time of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, he is 40 years old and suddenly realised that the world has changed and his view on world has changed as well.

While his first solo album definitely mirrors his 40-years crisis, he sounds puzzled, lost, very urban, in "Los Rayos" Vicentico is more comfortable with his new place in life, relaxed and ironic.

Definitely a must for those who liked his first solo album, but not for fans of Cadillacs.

Extension del primer album.......2004-10-14

Este segundo album de Vicentico me ha dejado con un sabor de boca medio dulzon, pero que no llega a satisfacer el paladar por completo. Cuando escuche de las numerosas caloboraciones que tenia para este album, me emocione y pense que seria un album que superaria al primero.
Puede que haya creado demasiada expectativa en torno al CD, que cuando al fin lo compre y escuche, no me dejo convencido.

Los Cadillacs se caracterizaban por no repetir formulas musicales en sus canciones, por ponerle a cada una un sonido diferente. Vicentico no ha seguido esta linea. La mayoria de canciones tienen ese sonido que caracterizo al primer album, que fue muy buen album. En su escencia,este album parece una extension del primero, pero escuchandolo detenidamente se pueden notar algunos cambios.
Las canciones tienen un sonido mas tropical, mas latino que las anteriores. Mucho metal y mucha percusion que suenan muy bien, pero creo que hay un abuso excesivo del acordeon. Tambien hay demasiadas canciones que suenan a boleros y Vicentico no tiene la voz para representar bien este genero musical.
Hay canciones geniales como la numero 3 (el nombre se me escapa) que es exquisita y con una letra quedeja un mensaje muy claro.

Tomando en cuenta todos los aspectos, melodias, instrumentacion, letras, arreglos y colaboraciones, este album se lleva una nota general de 4 estrellas por si solo. Si lo ponemos junto a su primer album, entonces le bajo una porque supera al primero y al ser un segundo album, debria haber aprendido de lo que hizo en el anterior.
