One of the best collections of Torroba.......2007-06-27

I think this recording is very relaxed for the most part. He kind of breezes through these with speed and doesn't take enough time on some pieces but David Russell is the cleanest guitar player around and these recordings are flawless. He lets you hear every note. Burgalesa is an amazingly beautiful, melancholy piece which Sevogia loved. Montemayor is haunting and tremelo is exquisite. Alba de Tormes is a popular and beautiful piece which sounds great. Fandango is probably the most popular piece here which overwhelmingly captures the Spanish feeling and which Segovia recorded extremely well (probably the most famous recording of Fandango) on his "Favorite Spanish Encore" LP and Russell sounds great in this piece, too. I'd rather listen to Russell play these than Yepes, Segovia or the Romeros.

One of the finest interpreter of Spanish guitar music.......2007-03-28

David Russell is one of the finest interpreter of Spanish guitar music. His interpretation of Torroba's music is one of the finest. David's performance of The sonatina in A major is very expressible, He plays the guitar with a lot of Heart and emotion, the recording he made of great Paraguayan composer Agustin Barrios Mangore is the best.

Good recording overall, a few issues.......2006-11-07

Probably one of the best things about this recording is that its a great collection of most of Torroba's great solo guitar music. Russell hits all the important pieces and plays them all with flair and accuracy. Russell's playing is very expressive and he tends to capture the esssence of the music. The playing is clean, beautiful and precise. Good tone, dynamic contrast, all the basics that guitar students spend years perfecting. However, Russell does play a little too heavy sometimes. I like to think that if Torroba were playing electric guitar today he would sound a lot like Pat Metheny with a little Spanish flavor. His music should never be too bombastic or heavy. Not to say that Russell never lightens up, but he doesn't always back off when he needs to. Some of the slower, more lyrical Castles of Spain especially aren't as effective as they could be. The other issue about this recording is that the track listing is WRONG! It should go like this:

Because of this glich in the track listing, all of the Castles of Spain tracks are off by one track as they are listed on the CD liner. It isn't even correct on David Russell's website.

The only other thing that I don't like about this CD is that some of the notes are a little weird. I know that there were differences between Torroba's original manuscript and Segovia's editions of the pieces, but some of the notes are either wrong or different from anything I've ever played from (and from what I remember that Segovia originally recorded). It's only a very minor detail as there may be some note decisions where Russell decided to preserve some original notations by Torroba, and I am always in favor of preserving the composer's original intentions over Segovia's rewrites if possible. It's not overly important, it's merely just a yellow flag to the guitarists out there saying that your edition may be slightly different from what Russell plays.

This is a great recording providing interesting contrast to Segovia's original Torroba recordings. While Segovia is the original "performance practice" version of these pieces, Russell's interpretations are for the most part very good. I would recommend listening to Segovia's recordings of Torroba as you would be cheating yourself to only listen to this recording.

Very good but not great.......2004-05-14

The reviewer "ivorx" has hit the essence of this performance right on. David needs to relax when the music calls for it. Torroba is not an intense composer and needs to flow in a more relaxed state. However, this is a very good CD of great guitar music by one of the guitar's greatest composers. I really wish more of Torroba's guitar concertos would be recorded by quality musicians.

A Guitar Lesson.......2003-10-28

Any serious student of classical guitar who wants to learn the music of Torroba and has unanswered questions about how to play these pieces needs this CD.

Pifarro's Best Album!.......2003-07-08

Although Pifarro has released some wonderful stuff in the past couple of years, "Los Ministriles" is still, in my opinion, their best offering to date. Simply, this recording is a delight, and although I've heard it dozens of times, it always remains fresh and enjoyable upon each re-aquaintance. There is something about music from the Spanish renaissance that sets it apart from almost anything being written in Europe at the time, and Pifarro captures the fun, spontanaity and pure beauty that this music exudes from note one. Highly recommended.

Fun, syncopated music from Piffaro, the Renaissance Band........2002-11-25

The full title of this album is "Los Ministriles: Spanish Renaissance Wind Music", and it features a wide variety of genteel and folksy tunes that would have been played by multi-instrumentalist minstrels employed by the nobles and clergy of the time. Originally founded in 1980 as the Philadelphia Renaissance Wind Band, Piffaro took its current name from the Italian version of "Pfeifer", or piper. And indeed, this group boasts a wide variety of wind instruments: entire families of shawms, recorders and crumhorns; along with sackbuts, a bass dulcian and various bagpipes; accompanied by Spanish essentials such as harp, vihuela, guitar and percussion. The lively and intricate syncopation of Renaissance Spanish compositions lends a distinctive character to this CD in comparison with the group's other releases, which are also very good. Try their Flemish and German recordings too--"A Flemish Feast: Flemish Renaissance Wind Music" and "Stadtpfeiffer: Music of Renaissance Germany".

Renaissance Music is Anything but Boring!.......2000-03-20

I will admit an immediate bias for this recording, as my Renaissance Music instructor's husband is one of the players. However, leaving that fact out entirely, this disc, like all of Piffaro's recordings, is a joy. I listen to them everywhere, especially when I need to stay awake on long drives. To hear such difficult ensemble instruments as shawms, krumhorns and recorders in a resonant environment, played perfectly in tune is rare. This particular disc ranges from organ-like works for recorder consort to rousing dances like ¡Si abrá in este baldres! Unlike CDs that contain lengthy masses with no lighter interludes (although these are equally gorgeous, especially the Gabrielli Consort's Moralès Mass for the Feast of St. Isidore), Piffaro's CDs are widely varied in terms of instrumentation, style, tempo and inflection. I have played this for many people who claim to not like early music and have had much favorable response, not to mention the personal enjoyment and sheer fun!

Fun music.......1998-11-21

Much of this CD is typical Renaissance music with period instruments: a delight to listen to, but sounding a lot like other Renaissance delights. What I found really unique is that this is the first selection of Renaissance music which I'm familiar with that includes bagpipes among the instuments. Crumhorns and sackbuts are nice but familiar; the bagpipe selections blew me away.

Incredible, Delightful, Seductive...
An excellent mix of pop, chill out, acid jazz, flamenco, trip hop, lounge, in a master piece album

Simply delightful for those of an eclectic taste!.......2005-01-23

This Spanish trio from Barcelona has managed to fuse the best in many genres of music. There are hints of flamenco, blues, jazz, dance and techno throughout this album. As for the lyrics, they talk of the darker, sadder sides of life ("Una Mañana","Una Ducha Y Un Café"), with the exception of "Tengo" - where the character praises all the wonderful things she has in her life. This is not an album made up of simple compositions. These three musicians know their craft well, and Dolo, the singer of Pastora, has a haunting, sensual voice. I bought the album in Puerto Rico after becomming obsessed with their first single, "Lola". (I was shocked by the lyrics and could not believe Pastora got away with their overly sexual story.) Little did I know all of Puerto Rico fell to their spell in the fall of 2004. Maybe you will, too...

Pastora shines beyong languages.......2005-01-22

Barcelona's native Pastora, sounds like nothing else you have ever heard before. Their sound is innovative yet very familiar. Once you hear their music you will have no other option but to surrender to their magic spell. Their lyrics are very simple yet very deep. Dolo, Pauet and Caim may very well be the perfect pop act of the new millennium, mixing hauntingly beautiful music with superb imagery. A unique audio visual experience. Pastora gets five stars for excellent lyrics, beautiful melodies and very creative presentation. If you do not speak Spanish, you have nothing to worry. Pastora is an experience that you will enjoy beyond language.

Dynamic music for a cheerful walk...........2005-01-03

Pastora is a young vibrant group from Barcelona that delivers their opera prima for our listening delight. With electronic tints mixed with traditional acoustic instruments the lyrics paint a perfect portrait of life (and death) in the illustrous metropoli (be it Barcelona, London, New York, Los Angeles). With melancholic songs like Hombre sin Tabaco, yet preceded with the cheerful Lola (the first single) this album is a perfect trip all around the incredible capacities of this young trio. I highly recommend it as a top album of 2004. This group is rising like bubbly foam in the preferences of Barcelona listeners and I can predict it will become huge in the hispanoamerican music scene in the near future. I am highly awaiting their next delivery, hopefully soon!

wrote Frederic Chopin. Those who enjoy classical guitar music find special pleasure in duets. The repertoire for duets is less frequently played, yet offers more possibilities for textural and harmonic effects than solo guitar. In such capable hands as Christopher Parkening and David Brandon, few musical experiences could give greater listening pleasure.

This album is, sadly, no longer in print and thus makes it even more collectable. Please buy this CD before you loose the chance to hear some the most beautifully played classical guitar duets ever recorded.

Parkening and Brandon Duo.......2001-12-14

This duo plays very well; however, the best tracks of this CD are on the Parkening "Great Recordings" double CD. Thus buying that CD would get you the best of this CD plus a lot of other good recordings. The duo's performance of "La Vida Breve," "Intermezzo," and "Evening Dance" are my favorites (and are included on the "Great Recordings" CD).

Haunting Renaissance music.......2006-07-03

I saw a performance by the Globe Theatre that included a wonderful 5-piece English Renaissance musical ensemble. I went looking for some music like that --- music that included viols, lute, wind, reed, and percussion instruments. The particular sound wasn't easy to find, despite a plethora of English Renaissance CDs. This album of Spanish music from the 15th and 16th centuries actually came closer to the sound I was looking for. It alternates between haunting minor key melodies --- pavanes and the like --- and faster, livlier dance tunes. They're a wind ensemble, but there's actually a tune for solo lute. A lot of variety in a memorable and reasonably priced CD. I highly recommend it. (Although I hope Piffaro will consider recording a CD of English Renaissance music!)

Excellent, as usual........2005-11-16

'Los Ministriles, Spanish Renaissance Wind Music' is, I believe, the Philadelphia band, Piffaro's second or third album and I really find it more enjoyable than their parallel album on Italian Rennaissance music. The instruments are virtually identical, with a fair mix of stringed instruments added to round out the sound, but I really enjoyed the overall listening experience more. So, if you are unfamiliar with this band, get this album before the Italian or French albums.

This is an interesting contrast to the works of Begona Olavide and the Eduardo Paniagua Group' of which Olavide is a member. This Spanish group specializes in Medieval and Renaissance stringed instruments. And, from a purely subjective reaction, I prefer their work to Piffaro. I also think their scholarship is more interesting, but then, they are all Spanish, and Spanish specialists, so that is to be expected.

The visceral preference may be the only one worth banking on.

Worth the money, Olavide and Paniagua may be greater value.

Absolutely gorgeous!.......2005-03-21

A magnificent recording with enthralling melodies that will lift up your spirits. The bagpipes and flute pieces are simply wonderful. In quality, variety and every other aspect, Los Ministriles is certainly comparable to "Sinners and Saints", the great amazon.com Renaissance dance music favorite, the only difference being that this CD only contains instrumental music (no songs).

It is just too bad very few people are aware of it.

Nunca he escuchado un disco igual que este de Pastora Soler. La combinación de la voz de Pastora, la música y la letra es fenomenal. No es como la música que normalmente encontramos hoy día, realmente tiene un sentido profundo. Lo recomiendo a cualquier persona con una aficción para música conmovedora.

listen to solo por amarte. It is the best romantic music to come out of spain in years. While the cd is hard to come by due to a strange lack of record company support, if you do get it somehow you will not be disappointed.
