Album Description

One of the world's greatest rock 'n' roll bands ever to strut the 50 States, these sharp-dressed Texas titans-Billy F. Gibbons, Frank Beard, and Dusty Hill-are a righteously hell rain' power trio boasting a 30-plus year hit-making legacy, both in the studio and at concert arenas. With their revved up blues 'n' boogie, they always make the most of their Texas birthright with with a distinctive sound that shakes up rock, blues, soul, garage-funk, Americana, and more. Nowhere is their force of nature musicianship better displayed than on these two album classics, revved up wtih red-hot bonus rarities. "You know what I'm talkin' about...an how how how how."

5 out of 5 stars Everything's alright..........2007-06-09

Along with Fandango!, Tres Hombres is essential ZZ Top. There is one fantastic song after another on this recording, and while the FM staples might be what lures many in, it is the lesser known songs that sink the hook firmly in place. Precious and Grace, Hot, Blue, and Righteous, and Master of Sparks are all excellent songs that many have not heard before. The stinging, tasteful, and concise guitar work of Billy Gibbons can never be undervalued and perhaps one of the finer qualities of this master is how he never overplays. The band is always tight and razor sharp and this is an album that I never tire of. This is not only an essential Top album, it is a vital part of any rock fan's collection. ZZ Top is one of America's best bands and this brilliant cd demonstrates why.

4 out of 5 stars Top's 1st Breakthrough (second being Eliminator).......2007-04-24

This is where Top buckled down, got their sound straightened out, and focused on delivering one killer blues-rocker after another. Yeah, they had done so before with Rio Grande Mud (another good one), but this was a tighter, better album. Which is why it produced the group's breakthrough hit, the dirty-voiceover-meets-Hip Shake-riff-meets-stellar-guitar-solo La Grange. It didn't break the Top 40, but it came close enough and is today justly a classic rock radio staple. Speaking of which, I assume you've also heard cuts like Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago and Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers. Both songs are essential ZZ. Scorching, brilliantly simple blues-rock. Actually, that's what the whole album's like, so if you like those you shouldn't forget about Master of Sparks, Move Me on Down the Line or Precious and Grace. Those seven are good enough to make this ZZ's best album ever. But it's second to Deguello because some of it isn't very impressive - Hot Blue and Righteous could be my least favorite classic-era ZZ Top song, I don't know. But I'm not a fan of it. Ballads never were Top's strong suit in the first place. I'm not exactly blown away by Shiek or Have You Heard Either. But this should belong to anyone who appreciates the little ol' blues band from Texas.

5 out of 5 stars zz top tres hombres.......2007-03-28

great to hear it again. always wanted to buy it again. brings back memories.the first 3 albums were the best.jojo

5 out of 5 stars Captures the ZZ Top spirit.......2007-03-26

If you want one ZZ Top album to capture their spirit, it's not Eliminator, it's Tres Hombres. La Grange captures their classic Texas shuffle in a song that's become a movie soundtrack staple. Waitin' for the Bus and Jesus Just Left Chicago are outstanding songs in their own right - the slide from one to the other is one of the smoothese medley transitions in rock. 2 great old school blues tunes fused together. Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers captures the rowdy side of the band, while Hot, Blue and Righteous shows their love of the classic auto. Truly a definitive work of ZZ Top.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY! The original mix for this classic album has been restored!.......2007-03-12

Having grown up with this album on vinyl, I've been consistently disappointed with all the CD releases of this gem. Buried under overdubs and mountains of reverb (most noticeable on the drums), somebody should've been smacked around for allowing the CDs to be released. With this re-issue, they finally got it right: crisp, immediate, in your face. Exactly what I remember from the vinyl but cleaned up. While the added live tracks are a welcome addition, the sound quality isn't the best. Nonetheless, this remains, in my opinion, ZZ Top's best work and a must-have.

Los Hombres Calientes is an impressive debut by the New Orleans-based band of the same name led by veteran percussionist Bill Summers (Headhunters, Herbie Hancock) and young lions Irvin Mayfield on trumpet and Jason Marsalis on drums. Respect does not have to mean dull, and this sextet draws smartly from Afro-Cuban tradition and jazz. Moreover, in their mix of originals and Afro-Cubanized standards, Summers & Co. are not afraid to take chances. In "Rhumba para Jason," Mayfield growls, moans, and cries over a light, exact rumba groove. "Stardust" suggests a Brazilian-flavored bolero. More intriguingly, the music has a lived-in feel--both when it suggests an urban, genteel ballroom ("Victor el Rojo," "Stardust") and when it evokes a Caribbean neighborhood backyard rich with echoes of Africa ("Ye Ye O"). This is a band worth following. --Fernando Gonzalez

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Talent.......2007-05-06

It's unfortunate that the review from Houston didn't know the history behind the band. I can understand how their name could confuse. LHC is a group of Americas finest musicians. Bill Summers, the extraordinary percussionist for Herbie Hancock, took several of New Orleans top young musicians on several trips to Africa and the Caribbean to explore the music of the regions. The result is a band that is able to convey a deep understanding of the roots of American Jazz through their music. The band plays an amazing range of genre's from New Orleans street funk to contemporary jazz. At a time when politics has divided people all over the world, this band has helped bring the beauty of Cuban music to the American people. I do not personally know any of the musicians but I would travel long distances to hear them. Look up Irvin Mayfields interview with Terry Gros on NPR. He's an amazing young trumpet player.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Debut CD by any band any time.......2001-03-12

This CD is absolutely beautiful. It is a great debut. It is mostly afro-cuban with some New Orleans soul (Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers sings "El Barrio" a sister song of "The Ghetto". It displays the unbelievable potential of two very young musicians, Jason Marsalis and Irvin Mayfield and the abilities of a seasoned veteran (Bill Summers). This CD won the Billboard Latin Music Award for Contemporary Latin Jazz Album of the Year in 2000 even though it was released first in 1998. Their second CD is even better than this one, and I can't wait for their 3rd.

1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2000-09-10

I went to see this group live in Houston last night and bought this CD before the concert started. Unfortunately, I should have waited till intermission and saved the money instead. Not knowing anything about Los Hombres Calientes I expected a true Latin Jazz group as advertised in their billing. Unfortunately this group does not have one ounce of Latin blood or spirit among them and it shows in their music. One of the pieces they attempted last night was Mandinga, a great Cuban guaracha/son which they simply botched. Los Hombres Calientes must be trying to capitalize on the current popularity of Latin music, given their name and billing, however they should call themselves The Hot Men and play New Orleans jazz instead, a genre better suited for their style. If you want to listen to a real Mandinga, buy the Ruben Gonzales version on World Circuit.

5 out of 5 stars The hottest thing in jazz today........1999-07-20

If my house were burning down and I could only save one disc, this would be it. Combining the intensity and passion of Latin music with the deep, deep soul of New Orleans, Los Hombres Calientes has created one of the greatests jazz recordings in recent memory. From the familiar strains of "Stardust" to the very Cuban "Rompey Saraguey", this album weaves the big Latin sound and Big Easy together in such a seamless way that, although it is very fresh, you wonder why no one has ever thought of it before. All these band members have their own solo projects going, and I for one hope that they continue to play together and make many more of these wonderful discs. I saw them at the Funky Butt in New Orleans, and they are even more fiery in concert. May the trinity of Summers, Marsalis and Mayfield bless us with great music for many years to come!!

5 out of 5 stars "Cookin' With Fire".......1999-06-12

Disregarding the fact that some of the members of this group are friends of mine, I think that this album is fabulous. The CD expresses more than simply music. It expresses a feeling that can only be inspred by true musicianship and giftedness. This group wraps themselves in the the center of the Latin Jazz idiom and basks in it. I am amazed at the talent of the quite young Irvin and Jason and hope that one day all musicians find and utilize the thread of life situated in the center of sound like this group has.

Loosely translated as "The Hot Men," this New Orleans-based trio of percussionist Bill Summers, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, and drummer Jason Marsalis go way beyond their homeboy Jelly Morton's command to add tinges of Latin to jazz. Augmented by bass, guitar, piano vocal, and drums, they create a swinging and dancing musical dish prepared with equal ingredients from all over the African diaspora: from the parade pulsations of "Comparsa N.O." to Argentine amour of "Tangeaux-zon." Marsalis, the boy wonder of his famous family, assimilates an astonishing array of moods and grooves, whether he's swinging a Latin mix on Roberta Flack's hit "Feel Like Makin' Love," laying down a roots riddim on the Black Uhuru-sounding "Rasta Renegade," or Afro-Americanizing the Cuban beat on "Fongo Sunk." A young Miles Davis with a tropical tone best describes Mayfield's sound on the three-part, "Cuban Suite," which includes an impressionistic string quartet, a balmy bolero, and a moving montuno. Bill Summers, the star of this outfit, is perhaps the best American-born African drummer ever. His sacred rhythms on "Alabi Oyo E" and "Suite Obatala" echo his work on Quincy Jones's Roots soundtrack, and the booty-shaking remake of "Chameleon," which he made famous with Herbie Hancock and Parliament's "We Want the Funk," reminds everybody where the "one" is. --Eugene Holley Jr.

4 out of 5 stars An eclectic trip through many musical neighborhoods........2001-10-03

Having lived with, and listened to, Hombres Calientes, Volume 2, for several months, I have come to the conclusion that the disc is like a subway car ride through many musical neighborhoods. After each cut, it is as though the listener re-enters the darkness, each time emerging to a different beat, style or rhythm. While not all of the tracks work, enough should catch your attention in a first listening to prompt you to go back and re-visit and experience. Soon, you may find yourself enjoying every stop on the route.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Smoking Live Band in the World today.......2001-03-12

I have seen Los Hombres Calientes at least 7 times including each of the past 3 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festivals. Their live show is one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. I know why they won the Billboard Music Award. Such imagination, technique, and musicianship from each of their members. Yvette is a beautiful woman whose presence on stage enhances the feeling of the crowd and teaches some of us who are not so great at dancing how to move gracefully to music. Irvin Mayfield is going to be near the top of the list of the best trumpeters ever...up there with Miles, Wynton, and Freddy. Bill Summers is the most gifted percussionist on the planet. I leave both of their first 2 CD's in my CD player all the time and can't wait for their 3rd.

1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2000-09-10

I went to see this group live in Houston last night and bought this CD before the concert started. Unfortunately, I should have waited till intermission and saved the $15 instead. Not knowing anything about Los Hombres Calientes I expected a true Latin Jazz group as advertised in their billing. Unfortunately this group does not have one ounce of Latin blood or spirit among them and it shows in this CD and their performance. One of the pieces they attempted last night was Mandinga, a great Cuban guaracha/son which they simply botched. 5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding!.......2000-06-24

This CD is definitely one of my absolute favorites. It is always one of the 5 cd's in my cd player and I have another copy for the car. This is truly inspired and ORIGINAL music. I'm lucky enough to live in New Orleans, so I can sometimes catch LHC live! Bill Summers (of HeadHunters fame) is a musical genius. LHC have a great international sound mixed with some true new orleans flavour! Irvin Mayfield has got to be the most talented young artist around. His style is really his own, and his compositions are original and moving. You don't have to think twice about this purchase. This CD is a MUST HAVE.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing..........1999-11-13

Sometimes, when a group you love releases a new disc, there is a nervous anticipation in the days leading up to it. "Can they do it again? Will it be fresh?" etc... All these thoughts ran through my mind. Have no fear. Los Hombres Calientes do not become complacent on their second outing. From the string quartet on "Cuban Suite, Pt. 1" to the NOLA rap/brass band mixed in with latin vocals on "A Comer Y A Descargar", they have beguiled and amazed me yet again. Summers, Marsalis, Mayfield, et al drive home their intoxicating blend of latin rythms and Big Easy soul. I am not kidding; nothing else sounds like these guys. From the straight NOLA jazz sound at the beginning of "Blues De Enredo" to the funk smackdown of "Chameleon/We Want The Funk" that ends the disc, you will be amazed at how all of these sounds can coexist and become greater than the sum of their parts.

LHC is on the move, indeed! If you are one of the many Jazzoholics who believe they have heard it all and that there is nothing original out there anymore, slap this one in your changer, and change your outlook.

1 out of 5 stars I wish Amazon had a negative 5 star rating!.......2007-06-29

I hate this band! This is one, if not the worst and most unoriginal band in the entire world! The noise these "would be musicians," produce is simple at best, shallow, unoriginal, copied and their lead singer is an idiot with one of the stupidest voices I have ever heard.

In short, everything is predictable about these losers who conquered the minds of poor musically uneducated people! Once you hear one of their songs, you practically heard them all. They never evolved, nor learned anything new, despite their 20 year "career," and sadly, there were a lot of musically ignorant people awaiting their "much anticipated come back."

So, forget about finding any intelligent lyrics, well thought musical arrangements or vocals with these guys.

If you really want to listen to a good rock and or pop music from Spain, listen to Heroes Del Silencio, now this is a band with very complex, well thought, well arranged and well written songs, with a real lead singer who has more in common with Jim Morrison from The Doors.

Or you can listen to Mecano, another band from Spain, this band has a lot of simple songs from their earlier period, but they are only simple compared to their later material. With Mecano, you can tell that they evolved in many aspects, because they have many very beautiful and very complex songs with a lot of gray matter, creativity and put into them.

Some of their songs have even been covered by Sarah Brightman!

Or, if you want to listen to an awesome Mexican rock group, with awesome arrangements and well thought music and lyrics, grab a copy of any Moenia CD, especially Moenia and Adicion, these guys produce awesome and very complex electronic music with great lyrics.

Caifanes is another Mexican group that has some great very original and complex material, specifically El Diablito, El Silencio and El Nervio del Volcan.

And if you really want some awesome material in English, get a copy of Pink Floyd's The Wall, or Queen's Greatest Hits, Alan Parson's Project Greatest Hits or anything from these guys: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Sting, Elton John, Eric Clapton!

Or literally ANY CD by the only band from which ALL music is derived one way or another, The Beatles.

(I just noticed that they are all British, well, grab any CD from U2, they're Irish and they are truly amazing! American? Well, there are many such as Toto, Journey, The Doors, Chicago or Simon & Garfunkel)

5 out of 5 stars 20 years of good music.......2006-04-05

Hombres g have been undoubtly the most important band of Pop- rock in Spanish of the all times.

This is a great cd, that mix the clasics of the groups with the most recent songs recorded last years, since their return. Very recommendable. This is a jewel for the collectors and who never had the chance of listening this band in its first stage.

The single, "No lo sé" extracted from the last recorded cd by Hombres G on 2.004 "Todo esto es muy extraño" is a very funy history with the sign and typical style of Hombres G.

New Orleans's fabled Congo Square was the meeting place where blacks from Africa and the West Indies danced to their native grooves during the slavery era. Paying homage to one of the Crescent City's most historic spots is the city's own Los Hombres Calientes--percussionist Bill Summers, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, and the newest member, drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez. They take Congo Square to the Americas beyond the U.S. with Cuba's Isaac Delgado and Jamaica's Burning Spear. Recorded in New Orleans, Havana, Santo Domingo, and Bahia, New Congo Square delves into the rumba/salsa "Forforo Fo Firi," the reggae classic "I Shot the Sheriff," and the merengue-motored "Dominicanos." Mayfield plays the Brazilian bossa nova with passion on "Corcovado/Nocturnal Low Moan" and Jamaica's Rastafarian rhythms spring forth on "Nyabinghi." Stateside, the group also funks up contemporary urban dance grooves on the "New Bus Stop," and trumpeter Michael Ray and vocalist Kermit Ruffins serve up a tasty musical gumbo on "New Second Line." Los Hombres Calientes vividly connect the musical dots in the African American hemisphere. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Esta colección de jazz está fundida con el Caribe y americano influencian, incluyendo Curtis Mayfield, el primo de los artistas. De la primera canción a la ultima, este CD lo que bailar a fuera de su silla. Si tienes alma.

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy!.......2003-03-24

Having never considered myself a real fan of jazz music, I wasn't in any real hurry to listen to this cd when I received it. Yesterday, I finally put it on the cd player and WOW! Irvin Mayfield is one terrific trumpet player! My favorite song on the cd is Fantizias De Samba, even though it did not feature Mayfield's talent with the trumpet, it was outstanding with John Boutte and Philip Manuel on vocals. The music is catchy and Los Hombres Calientes' talent is undeniable. Their music is an original blend of Jazz, Carribean, and other music styles, and they're cd's are definately worth giving a listen to.

5 out of 5 stars All that and then some..........2002-02-16

This album does not disappoint. I'm not big on Grammy nominations but they definitely got this one right. Los Hombres Vol. 3 is a treat from track 1 to 23. Irvin Mayfield's playing is fantastic and Bill Summers brings the straight thunder. The gumbo of sounds and rhythms that they bring to the table is what Latin jazz is all about. I saw this group live at Blues Alley and they were amazing.

I must add that Irvin Mayfield is a true gentleman of jazz. I am a beginning trumpet player and I contacted him with some questions. He not only answered my questions - he gave me a quick lesson when he was in town. We need more jazz musicians like him who remember (and act accordingly) the history of this great music.

5 out of 5 stars Great - Deserves Wide Attention.......2001-07-22

People have probably been trying to decide where jazz ought to go from the beginning. A major turning point came when bop pretty much took dance, and a vast part of its audience from jazz. Ken Burn's series showed a musician returning from the war, hearing bop and thinking it was the greatest thing he'd ever heard; and a dancer who thought it was the worst. Diz could never get more than a few of the boppers to dance to it. Of course you could get a few people to dance to the Dead, but it didn't prove much.

A recent article in the NY Times described a new European jazz dance scene - rather techo, and reportedly dismissive of the "retro" American jazz scene. I haven't heard these CDs, and so, can't comment. I will say, though, that the blend of New Orleans, the Caribbean and modern jazz that these guys have devised is one of the best answers I can imagine to the "whither jazz?" question. The idea of combining Caribbean music and jazz is hardly novel, and the return to New Orleans-based players and styles may be retro, but this music sounds very new.

Volume Two showed clearly where they were heading, and inspired great hope. Volume Three: Congo Square really fulfills their promise. This is great music, with excellent original compositions by Mayfield and Summers. It's in no way "light" jazz - treacle for the masses. "Serious" jazz fans will find lots to enjoy, but I really think this could be enjoyed by people who've never bought a CD featuring a trumpet.

I hope this will get some serious critical attention. These guys deserve to be huge, and this is the CD to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Music that is refreshing to the heart and soul!!!.......2001-04-19

This CD is a buffet of mutilple talent! What you hear is what you get, a combination of flavorful sounds from different parts of the world. From the beautiful sound of Mr. Mayfield's trumpet to outcry of the incredible smooth sounds of the percussion, together with other multiple talents in this album they stimulate the heart and soul. This cd makes one dance, think, cry, laugh, and most of all it makes one feel great! Check this CD out for yourself! Enjoy! Ofa atu!

"Come and party with me, y'all," exhorts Bill Summers on Los Hombres Calientes' latest multi-culti celebration, telling you not only what the album is about and where he and co-leader Irvin Mayfield are from--the South, New Orleans to be precise--but also what their attitude is in breezing through Cuban and Brazilian styles, funk and jazz, samba and mambo and salsa. Though they have an agenda as world travelers, they're neither purists nor rootsologists; they're mostly after a good time and will toss anything into the mix to attain it. On "Carnival," their deepest and most sustained effort, their ability to synthesize styles is so secure, tributes to a pair of Crescent City legends, piano maven James Booker and bass funkster George Porter of Meters fame rub off happily on West African and Congolese numbers, and vice versa. Reaching back to the Satchmo tradition with his high, hard-edged, trilling solos, but flashing modernistic colors as well, Mayfield rides over and through the sound while Summer keeps things percolating on his usual assortment of percussion instruments. The hometown cast includes the Rebirth Brass Band, Kermit Ruffins and the Mardis Gras Indians. Party on, indeed. --Lloyd Sachs

4 out of 5 stars Los Hombres keeps it hot with this CD as well.......2005-07-22

Clearly another great brainchild of Bill Summers and Irvin Mayfield. Although not my favorite (Vol.4: Vodou Houdou is THE BEST), there is some great stuff on this CD! "James Booker", tribute to the piano great, is my favorite song on the CD. Ron Markham does an awesome job on the piano, and it is evident in this recording. Irvin Mayfield has always been a musician that pays a huge amount of attention to detail and perfection, and that is certainly not compromised on this CD. It's great music, although I would argue that this CD has much more of the New Orleans feel to it than the previous one.

5 out of 5 stars Have a very Gypsy Christmas.......2005-12-15

On paper, the combination of Django Reinhardt-style gypsy jazz and Christmas Carols wouldn't seem to work, but this is a fantastic album. It's freewheeling yet tasteful, adventurous yet traditional and secular yet sacred. Highly recommended. Also one of those Christmas records that will please all yet offend none. It would be an enjoyable listen anytime of year. Django all the way!

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy Christmas Tunes - Lots of Fun.......2004-12-14

You get a whole new feel for some old standards like "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" or "Sleigh Ride". Imagine a gypsy violinist, a guitar, and an upbeat, swing feeling to the tunes. They really have a lilt and a zip to them.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Holiday Fare.......2004-12-09

We purchased this CD two years ago, and it is now an anticipation-laden harbinger of the holiday season for us. I don't think it will ever grow old. The combination of humor, musicianship and spirit are classic.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent Christmas CD.......2003-12-05

Wonderful jazz licks by all three musicians with each playing off and with the others. There's a real sense of fun with the arrangements and a range of tunes mostly from the "modern" era of the past fifty years. One of the best I've heard this year.

    5 out of 5 stars A unique Christmas CD.......2002-12-28

By the time I heard this CD, I was sick of Christmas music, yet I still bought it. It's like no Christmas CD I've heard before. Full of very original takes on Christmas classics. Who can resist "Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer" as a tango? It also has the best version of the Grinch song ever produced. You can't go wrong with this one, unless you don't like jazz violin.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sonically excellent CD!.......2004-01-31

Summer Of Love Vol. 2 is a nicely mixed selection of trippy pop songs, many of which blared from countless shirt-pocket ALL-TRANSISTOR radios in 1967. What makes this CD unique is that nearly every tune was purposely re-mastered using the original monaural mixes. Sonically, this CD is excellent, having been re-mastered by Bill Inglot who really has an ear for great sound.

3 out of 5 stars Oops, missed a song from my previous review.......1998-08-29

It's me again, the "music fan from California."

I left a song off my list, so just wanted to complete the review:

That Acapulco Gold -- The Rainy Daze. One of those stupid lead-singer-singing-through-a-megaphone ditties. Remember "Winchester Cathedral"? This is like that song, but a thinly-veiled ode to marijuana. Throw-away filler.

3 out of 5 stars Some great stuff, some filler.......1998-08-29

Some of the songs on this album were selections for the terrific original "Nuggets" album, which you'd be lucky to find anymore. However, while "Nuggets" shined throughout, this album is a very mixed bag.

    The standouts:

I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night-- The Electric Prunes. A great psychedelic classic, with a bumblebee guitar riff.

Incense and Peppermints -- Strawberry Alarm Clock. A period piece, but still a great single.

Renaissance Fair -- The Byrds. A track from their fantastic "Younger Than Yesterday" album. Great Crosby/McGuinn tune. "I think that maybe I'm dreaming..."

Back On The Street Again -- The Sunshine Company. The best song by this group. Irresistable folk-tinged song with terrific harmony. Very happy sound, but melancholy lyrics.

My World Fell Down -- Sagittarius. This should've been a big hit when it was released. Instead, it's one of those rare gems that any true '60s fan should have. What a cool song. Great harmonies, instrumental parts, very well produced.

A Whiter Shade Of Pale -- Procol Harum. How can you not like this song? Rolling Stone voted it one of best singles of all time. Sort of "When A Man Loves A Woman" filtered and distorted through "Mr. Bojangles," with a healthy dose of extremely cryptic lyrics thrown in for good measure.

    The filler:

Are You Gonna Be There -- The Chocolate Watch Band. So-so sneering Rolling Stones clone.

Epistle To Dippy -- Donovan. Donovan at his most wimpy and precious. Even the geeky song title should tell you something. Ugh! Turn it off!

Love Every Day -- Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart. Well, if you like Peter & Gordon, I guess you'll like this easy-listening stuff. Otherwise....

The Beat Goes On -- Sonny and Cher. As irritating as always.

Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out) -- The Hombres. Amusing back in the '60s as a fun novelty song. Pretty embarrassing and silly now.

Twelve Thirty -- Mamas And Papas. Not one of their best songs.

Let's Live For Today -- The Grassroots. Never cared much for this song (or group).

It's A Happening Thing -- The Peanut Butter Conspiracy. Their one semi-hit. You can tell why they only had one hit.

Six O' Clock -- The Lovin Spoonful. Not one of their best songs.

You can find a lot of the good songs on other albums such as the (subsequent to the original "Nuggets") "Nuggets"-series records that Rhino released. Maybe those will have a better gem-to-filler ratio than this album.

3 out of 5 stars Two Greats and a bunch of Also-Rans.......1998-06-29

The two really great cuts in this collection make it worth owning. That Acapulco Gold by the Rainy Daze and Let It Out (Let it All Hang Out) by the Hombres are true gems of the era. The rest of this stuff is fairly unremarkable.
