The novelty of Audioslave has had time to wear off. The grouping of ex-Rage Against the Machine members and ex-Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell is no longer new; and time has long since come for the band to live or die based solely on the merits of its music, not on the reputation of its members. The good news is that, at least for now, the group is in a position to do exactly that. On Revelations, the band channels and updates the unapologetic boogie of Ian Gillan-era Deep Purple on tunes such as "One and the Same," "Shape of Things to Come," and "Wide Awake" with ease, inspiring awe and genuine surprise. Guitarist Tom Morello has rarely sounded as fresh as he does on the stomp-and-stammer "Original Fire" and the otherwise disposable grunge retread "Somedays." Not every track here can be as good as the opening title cut and a few--the should-be moving ballad "Until We Fall," the closing "Moth"--fall painfully short. But there is enough strength here to suggest that Audioslave's ability to deliver jaw-dropping albums remains intact and its ability to live up to the hype is lagging just a step or two behind. --Jedd Beaudoin

5 out of 5 stars Pardon my gushing but this album is REALLY GOOD!!.......2007-07-06

I am a fan of Chris Cornell's. I have all of Soundgarden's albums and am going to buy his solo albums too. Like Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell is a brilliant singer and songwriter and his teaming up with the former members of Rage Against the Machine was an excellent move since all three of the albums put out by Audioslave are top-notch rock and roll.

Cornell's voice is clear and polished and the precussion members (especially Tom Morello) do very well together and I was sorely disappointed to find out about Audioslave's demise. Cornell's music is a work of art and all of Audioslave's CDs would do his former band, Soundgarden, proud.

Hopefully Audioslave will do a reunion tour. Meantime, this and Audioslave's other 2 CDs belong in everyone's CD collection.

3 out of 5 stars Losing the edge.......2007-07-05

Got to admit that I was a major fan of this group after the first AudioSlave cd. Then Out of Exile which had just a little bit less energy. And Revelations, well, just as well they break up I suppose. Chris Cornell's name is up on the marquee over at Denver's Filmore. I just wonder if these guys knew what a good thing they had going? I salute AudioSlave for what they once were!

5 out of 5 stars Great sound... I like this rock band.......2007-06-25

Back again', Audioslave bring to us a very nice piece that include cool rock sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Revelations, what a song!.......2007-06-06

Audioslave; Revelations, the supergroups third effort, has a more rhythmic and rough feel than their previous two albums, making it sound like it came out of a garage in the early 90's. From the biting second song to the closing arena singalong, the album visit's the bands journey through the mainstream, settling in a comfortable mix between Chris Cornell's melodic vocals, and the aggressive inventiveness that the former Rage Against the Machine members bring.
Chris Cornell was the long time lead singer for the hugely popular grunge band Soundgarden. After six albums and a decade of melancholy lyrics, he emerged into the next millennium with a solo album, Euphoria Morning, that reflected a more romantic and introspective message. After disappointing support, fans were thrilled that he was back to his hard rocking roots when he joined up with the recently disbanded and equally popular band Rage Against the Machine consisting of Tom Morello (guitarist), Tim Commerford (bass and backup vocals), and Brad Wilk (drums). The outcome was dynamite. As guitarist Tom Morello explored melodies, he put his personal mark on a unique heavy grooving style that seemed to speak to Cornell. Audioslave released three albums one right after the other. Incredibly all three were full of new and inspired music, different from the last and more matured as they went. It seemed that Chris Cornell, front man of over 20 years, was hitting his lyrical stride.
The first song and the album's namesake, Revelations is fast, upbeat, and Audioslave's trophy song gets the blood going. The kind of song you can listen to over and over again for hours, finding something new in it to enjoy every time. The rest of the songs ably backs it up with driving riffs, powerful epic choruses textured with subtle and soft verses, creating thrilling ebb and flow through the songs. They seamlessly incorporate groundbreaking solos with Cornell's sage vocal mastery, and they do it with incredibly inventive transitions creating awesome flow while reaching the extreme ups and downs, like a wall of voice and guitar hitting you between the ears as the chorus unfolds. The lyrics also have real life applications, for example equating a sinful life to a stray and beleaguered dog, who is found, and gets food and shelter in the end. Just as in the past two albums, he continues to write of spiritual struggles and questions, but the thankfulness and gratitude that comes through in his words show that some of his questions are getting answers.
The tracks consist of driving beats and hammering riffs, but while the verses can be delicate and polarizing, there is still room left for soft and sweet ballads that Chris Cornell gets his voice around so soundly. Audioslave also explores relatively new territory in Revelations with a small sidebar of political opinion. For Rage Against the Machine fans, political dialogue went hand in hand with their music, but Audioslave has seemed more discreet about mixing it into the music before now, allowing their websites and causes to funnel their political ideas.
Audioslave fans should be very pleased with another great album from the seasoned rockers. Revelations is an album on the same level as it's predecessors, setting higher expectations and redefining what a supergroup can do. With Robert Plant like vocals and groove metal sounds, Audioslave combines them in an album that both classic rock fans and head banging enthusiasts can enjoy. This album also reflects the musical truth that Soundgarden fans and Rage Against the Machine fans continue to learn, that rocking gets better with experience.

5 out of 5 stars Remember Your Roots--Listen to this album!.......2007-05-22

Who says rock n roll is dead? This album brings it all back to where it should be. No screeching, carbon-copy, angst-ridden, eye-liner-wearing, sobbing for the chance to meet Marilyn Manson kid stuff here. Just good, clean, dirty rock, played with an ear for what's true and right. Rock on!!!

In a bordering-on-brilliant idea, the overseers of The Spawn soundtrack proposed an idea to a host of bands that went something like this: "you metal kids go play nice with the electronic geeks and maybe you'll make beautiful music together." Well, guess what? It happened. From the sexy, screamy sounds of the opening cut "Can't You Trip Like I Do" (courtesy of Filter and The Crystal Method) to the funkified "One Man Army" (Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello mixing it up with The Prodigy), the disc is as hot as the Spawn's home and twice as heavy as the monster himself. If you like the CD, rent the video; the soundtrack is front and center in the film, kind of like MTV with a plot. --Denise Sheppard

3 out of 5 stars a fusion of synth and metal.......2007-06-12

This is a good soundtrack. "Trip like I Do" was the main reason I got it. I found out I got a lot more too. Marilyn Manson with Sneaker Pimps, Orbital and Kirk Hammet, Butthole Surfers and Moby, Metallica and DJ Spooky. All these tracks are good. It starts to wind down and lose steam with the last couple of tracks but this is a good investment. If you enjoy the musical fusion of different styles than check this out, also check out the Judgement Night soundtrack

2 out of 5 stars Great idea...so so execution.......2007-04-15

I don't get all the rave reviews here. I've owned this CD since it came out in 1997 and its been probably more than 5 years since I had a desire to listen to it. Now listening to it trying to figure out what I want to put on my I-pod and I really can't find anything other than the 1st 2 tracks, which are great. The Filter/Crystal Method track is a classic. But beyond that I just find the songs somewhere between mildly interesting and boring. I am a fan of many of the rock & electronic artists here, but this experiment just didn't pan out in my opinion. It's been 10 years and I haven't seen any other collections like this so I must not be in the minority. Nice try, but there is not much more here beyond the concept.

5 out of 5 stars A great album, a massive soundtrack.......2006-07-11

I was a big fan of Spawn before I got to be a big fan of music. When I found the soundtrack in a garage sale, I jumped on it and had listen it almost a thousand times!! ...When I realized I had a special one: instead of "For whom the bells tolls" of Metalica on track 6, I have "This is not a dream" from Apollo 440 and Morphine, and I must admit it's my personal favorite track on the album!! I'm glad I didn't bought the American version.

5 out of 5 stars The Lost Art of Great Soundtracks!! .......2006-03-29

Spawn is by far, along with the original Batman starring Michael Keaton, the best comic book remake movie ever. Sadly underplayed, especially to the recent flood of sub-par remakes. Well, not only was the magic and mayhem captured forever on film, the soundtrack played a huge roll in the movie as well, thus making it a vital part of the movie that sadly, now, has seemed to become a forgotten craft: That is of course, the lost art of producing a Great movie soundtrack. Showcasing some of the best and most cutting edge artists of that era, which may have not been very long ago, but nevertheless was a significant time. A time of change within the rock community. A precursor to what would be the short life of Nu-Metal and the rebirth of straight up Rock and Roll, which seemed to split fans right down the middle, and all different ways at that. A cool time and a cool change that was long overdue in the music world. although this is one soundtrack that is definitely dated, it is still a much appreciated and a more often than not listened to addition to my collection. Anyone who loves the movie needs this soundtrack, not to mention anyone who just loves music of the heavier sort, this is an awesome soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Classic fusion of genra's.......2006-03-03

This soundtrack knows what it needs to be and works really hard at succeeding...and for the most part it really does. From the explosive first track, Filter and Crystal Method set the bar very high, and for the most part the following tracks, while never fulling living up to "Trip like I Do" still fit the mold and deserve to be listed on the same track listing. "Long Hard Road out of Hell" is a great song, dispite the controversy of Sneaker Pimps regreting having to woek with Manson, they still delivered a brilliant song, and the second best on the album. "Satan" by Orbital and Kirk Hammet as well as "Tiny Rubberband" by the Butthole Surfers and Moby really stand out as quality tracks. The redone "FOr Whom the Bell Tolls" is appropriate subject matter, but all in all I was not overly impressed with the track. "Torn Apart" is brilliant (gotta love Stabbing Westward) and Prodigy's "One man Army" is freaking killer. Closing track by Soul Coughing & Roni Size is decent but I would have closed with Slayer's "No remorse" instead. Here is my HUGE complaint...KoRn's "Kick the P.A." is one of the dumbest songs ever, and with the talent that KoRn has shown they possess this was a waste of a track...They could have done SOOOOOO much better. Incubus and Silverchair are fine and Henry Rollins shows he still has it (never lost it)...so all in all Spawn delivers...they just should have cut KoRn before the CD was released!

4 out of 5 stars joe took a long five, but with this cd, he's ever so back.......2007-03-27

---the first few bars of sweet georgia brown--instantly recall the scatty rhythmic signature of joe's contributions to the classic "time out" brubeck collaboration--again and againn, through the first six cuts we savor the accommodating sweetness or throaty surliness of the superior sax/flute front,a signature bass that refuses to stay too far back tii often, a now percussive, now pouty piano, the interactive live feel and bright energy that makes the driving skins leap for our inner ear when they're not coaxing sensuality--

-- generally consistant and often fresh interpretations throughout a solid half dozen cuts passing beyond a mundane respite beyond the midpoint until surging through the final stretches with autumn leaves/sweet and lovely --overall, a pleasure!

5 out of 5 stars Joe Morello is one of a kind........2006-03-20

There are two classes of drummers - Joe Morello is one and the second includes all the other guys. His total command of his drum kit enables him to improvise cleverly and appropriately with no apparent effort, and he seems to create new licks for each piece he participates in. LIke most geniuses, he leaves his listeners thinking "why didn't I come up with that?" He's been doing this for about 50 years and seems not to be losing his touch.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Morello: simply the best!.......2005-08-31

IF all the great drummers that ever lived were assembled in an auditorium, and Joe Morello walked in...they would all stand!
"Going Places" is simply one example of why he's the best in the business. And, as expected, surrounded by the greatest musicians in this world..or any world!
"Going Places" will take you through a universe of great Jazz and where Joe Morello rules supreme.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Morello is Fantastic.......2005-03-16

This album is one more piece of evidence that Joe Morello is one of the all-time greats of jazz drumming. The music (and Morello's drumming) is tasteful, dynamic and swinging throughout, Morello shows his marverlous technique, his good taste and his sense of humor as well. My only regreat is that Joe didn't start recording albums such as this one as soon as he left the Brubeck Quartet in the late 60's.

5 out of 5 stars One of best recordings ever!!!.......2003-11-08

Joe Morello is hands down one of the most musical drummers. The songs on this cd never suffer from heavy handedness (or footedness for that matter). He very well has aquired some of the best chops and technique on the planet but always plays for the song and gets out of the way of the other musicians when they take a solo or a few bars. This is a recording for anyone who enjoys jazz, whether a fellow drummer or not. Beautiful tasty musicianship and a beautifully recorded album.
