Like her compatriot Thalia, the Mexican-born, grupero diva Pilar Montenegro is a popular recording artist and actress. Since 1996, this ex-member of the pop band Garibaldi has recorded two CDs, Son del Corazón and Desahogo. Now on a new label, Montenegro gives her fans the regional sounds they know and love, and seeks to win over Anglo listeners. Co-produced by Rudy Pérez, Montenegro's Gloria Estefan and Jennifer Lopez-like vocals, illuminate the ballads like the José José hit "Vamos a darnos Tiempo," and the Julio Iglesias number, "Lo Voy a Dividir." "Se me Hizo Fácil," swings with a Norteña groove, while the English language "Love is All You Need," bounces to an R&B beat. Montenegro's Middle Eastern, ballad, and cumbia-influenced versions of "Prisionerá" the theme song of the new telenova, will generate the most radio airplay and it might help her crossover all borders, musical and otherwise. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Amazon.com essential recording

Ordinarily, it pays to be wary of collections such as these, which often promise a lot but deliver a mishmash of disconnected excerpts. This disc, however, is something of an exception: you really do get just about all of Puccini's best arias, which is possible, because he didn't write so many operas that choosing the best moments becomes a matter of the producer's personal taste. Also, Puccini's operas are so popular that every major label has excellent complete recordings of all of them, so in making this compilation it was possible to cast from strength: all the singers here are fine. In fact, the only proviso that needs to be made before you rush out and add this disc to your collection is that it's wrong to assume that all of Puccini's best tunes lie in his arias. The opening 10 minutes of any one of his operas will tell you that's not true. So by all means enjoy this disc--then start sampling the operas complete. --David Hurwitz

"Quando m'en vo" is not omitted from this CD; it is just called "Musetta's waltz song." It is the same aria.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2003-10-14

This is one of the first opera CDs I ever got. It's wonderful for just about any body;from the newbies like me or the opera fanatics. I especially like 'In Questa Reggia'. Buy it now!!

5 out of 5 stars HATE OPERA? THIS ONE WILL CHANGE YOUR MIND.......2003-09-04

The Ultimate Puccini Collection features some of Puccini's most arias and will appeal to even the most ardent operaphobes.

A great listening experience featuring some of the greatest opera performers of all time.

3 out of 5 stars "Ultimate" only if you like your opera "al fresco"!.......2002-06-13

The music is without question, among the most beautiful ever written. But the quality of the fidelity tells me that many of the selections were recorded live in concert in outdoor venues. I wish that was clear to me before I bought the disc. So, is the music the ultimate? YES! Is the recording the ultimate? NO!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Performance but Average Recording Quality.......2002-02-18

I love opera! I love Puccini! Not only is the vocalism important to me, but the quality of the recording as well. I enjoy my hi-tech sound system. I like to feel as if I am sitting in the front row of the first balcony when I listen to opera. This CD is excellent! The vocalists were well chosen. The technical performances are eloquent and emotional, as Puccini should be. However, the quality of the recording is not very good. No matter how you adjust your sound system, the recording is a bit tinny and as a result, the emotional high points of the arias are not as vibrant as they could be if the recording were of better quality. I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves Puccini and who is not as finicky as I!

4 out of 5 stars A great intro for ... opera fans.......2002-02-14

I adore Italian opera -- particularly Puccini. That makes this CD a real gem. All my favorite arias and duets are here, sung by well-known and talented artists.

If you're new to opera, you can't go wrong with this album. Puccini was the Spielberg of his time, and his work still has a lot of popular appeal. (It's much easier to like "La Boheme" than Wagner's Ring cycle -- that's for sure!)

If you have a lot of opera already, you probably have most of these songs. Still, if you want them all in one place, this is a worthy buy.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Puccini.......1999-09-23

This disc exposed me to the wonderful world of Puccini's melodious opera. It piqued my interest and turned me into a Puccini lover. Listening to full opera recordings has only solidified that love.

3 out of 5 stars Delightfully fun album; Opera for YOU!.......1999-04-30

Opera unfortunatley has the reputation for being uppity and pretentious, but this album shows that Opera can be fun and entertaining. This album is SUPERB for just listening to as you work, eat, or sleep. Especially if you've recently been turned on to Opera by Mr. Andrea Bocelli, you'll enjoy the rich diversity of this album. You know the tenor; how about soprano, etc? Grab a bowl of spaghetti, pour a glass of wine (or grape juice) and enjoy "Puccini & Pasta"!

5 out of 5 stars Arrows straight to your heart........1999-03-28

These beautiful arias will give you goose-bumps from head to toe, pierce your life's stress-tempered armor, and home straight into your heart. Bravo!!!

5 out of 5 stars A great first taste of opera's famous arias.......1999-03-04

Think you might like to try some opera? The arias on this disc are fabulous! Sylvia McNair has a voice like an angel. A must have for a beginning opera collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gloriously melodic.......2007-02-22

Gounod's Saint Cecelia Mass is one of my favorite religioius/choral compositions. It is filled with moving, melodic parts and should be a part of the music collection of anyone who loves choral works.

5 out of 5 stars Gounod: Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile; Petite Symphonie for wind instruments.......2006-07-07

Gounod: Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile; Petite Symphonie for wind instruments~ Franz Crass is an astounding recoding of an incredible piece of work. The mass is magnificent and being a devout Christian at heart it verily touches my spirit in so many ways. The book-let is a not so well done but the wonderful painting on the cover is a treat indeed. I love portraits and especially art made in the 16th, 17th and 18th century which I consider to be the pinnacle of what art has accomplished so far. The little wind symphony is also a nice piece of work and whilst Gonoud is not one of my favorite composers by any means one can still acknowledge a truly gifted composers when one hears it. Highly recommended indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Listen with pleasure.......2004-04-09

This is the only performance of the Gounod mass I know. Had it on LP years ago, bought the CD, and it is better than I remember. An old recording, but lovely transfer and delectable sound. Gounod is a sadly underappreciated composer; the guy could write a memorable tune, and in this mass he wrote several. This works as religious and as choral music. A stirring Credo, a galvanizing Kyrie, and a glorious Agnus Dei are just some of the highlights. This is a massive, important work, lovingly performed by a clearly attentive team. The soloists shine, the orchestra is great. And considering the bargain cost and the great pairing--quite a change of pace but a scrumptious little piece--this is a delightful disc that will get a lot of use in your CD player.

5 out of 5 stars Still The Best Recording of this work!.......2003-06-17

EMI has done me and many others a great favor by re-issuing this
recording of Gounod's Messe Solonnelle de Sainte Cecile on CD
in their Encore series. This is the second time this recording has been issued on CD the first was in their Studio series. Frankly this recording makes the digital recording by Georges Pretre also made by EMI as an attempt to replace this one in the catalog pale into complete insignificance by the comparison.
and having the Petite Symphony as a filler is only icing on the cake. Also the price makes this a clear first choice.

The gorgeous Kyrie from the Peit Messe Solonnelle has recently been used to good effect in the film 'Bad Education' prompting me to get to know the piece better and purchase this recording. The whole work is a delight, much lighter in tone and broader in length than the title would suggest. However,i suspect this is not the recording to have(i'm going to try Muti/EMI)as the soloists(a glamorous team)are unfocused and intonation a particular problem. There's a surprisngly tentative feeling about the whole performance. The piano part(a few splashy moments here) is normally taken on 2 pianos but here they make do with 1.....seems a shame to me.
Stabat Mater receives an authorative account, another very approachable work which i shall enjoy getting to know better.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-05-05

First of all, the composition itself (Petite Messe Solennelle) may not be for everyone. There are some fine moments, but I find many of the choral movements to be sprawling and unfocused. The martial-sounding tenor aria is a little goofy and operatic for it's sacred text, but if you really like Rossini, you might get some guilty pleasure out of it. The soloists are uneven (I find the bass and mezzo to be especially disappointing). In general, there are some terrifying intonation moments, especially during the treacherous (a cappella) Sanctus. Wish I could recommend a better recording, but this is my first acquaintence with the piece. All things considered, I plan on dumping my copy. I haven't even listened to the Stabat Mater, which of course is much more widely recorded work.

5 out of 5 stars The best performance of this enchanting mass.......2000-06-14

Rossini's last major work, the petite messe solennelle, is in the tradition of haydn's last six masterful masses in the geniality and at many times happiness of the music. The version recorded here is the first version as soloists and chor are accompanied by piano and harmonium. The first version is genarally regarded as superior to the second one which Rossini orchestrated himself and asked not to perform it during his lifetime. Gandolfi is helped by four excellent italian soloists to convey the joy and power of the music. While the coupling of the spectacular stabat mater is very generous, some may want to purchase the stabat mater separately conducted by Hickox on Chandos.

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs, but if ONLY she could Sing a little Better!!!.......2004-08-01

The lyrics to the songs portray real life situations. You feel like you really identify with each and one of the songs of the album. The only little flaw here is that she does not have a great voice. One some songs, you wish she would improve her vocal ability, but I think she is gettting there. Pilar has always been known not to have the best vocal voice, but she manages to try to improve. The album is worth buying it. Hopefully, next time she improves a little more.

      4 out of 5 stars Great cd........2003-04-26

Pilar started her career in the early 90's with a group called "Garibaldi" that had a big hit for a while, she's also known as an actress but her previous cd's as a solo singer really didn't do it in the international market.
But "Desahogo" (Relief) has nothing to do with it. The album is full of success. The first single "Quitame ese hombre" (Take away from me that man) became a #1 hit for several weeks in the US and other countries including Spain. The hit of the song was so big that it also charted on The Hot 100 that it's actually for songs in English. It reached #72.
"Desahogo" has been certified Platinum x2 in the US and Mexico and Platinum and Gold in other countries.

Pilar's music is pop and she also sings some tropical mexican music that sounds very good on this beautiful woman.

      5 out of 5 stars Szell's Memorial.......2006-11-15

This was Dr. Szell's last official recording and a special one, as he maintains his disciplined appraoch but tenderly works with the famed Vienna Philharmonic in producing a performance which is at times beautiful beyond words. The sound on my LP and also on my CD excerpts (mated with the Beethoven 3rd symphony conducted by Schmidt Isserstedt) is wonderful. Highest recommendation for this digital version of the complete Egmont music. He hums along with the coda of every Egmont overture performance I own, including this one.

5 out of 5 stars The best, most complete recording of Beethoven's Egmont music.......2006-08-17

Klemperer made a prominent recording of four excerpts from Beethoven's music to Schiller's drama, Egmont, but only Szell gives us stretches of interwoven dialogue from the play. These readings are particularly moving at the climax when Egmont is executed--one catches the tragic nobility of this martyred revolutionary who appealed to Beethoven's fervent feelings about political freedom. In adddition, Szell's cnducting is crisp and authoritative, Lorengar's singing is lovely, if not always steady, and the Vienna Phil. plays gloriously. The CD is short shrift so far as timing goes, but I've treasured this collection since its release in the Sixties.

Note: All tis music can be had in Decca's bargain collection of Szell's complete recordings for that company.

5 out of 5 stars All Talking, All Singing, All Playing.......2001-01-23

I had this on LP ages ago and always loved it because it was unfamiliar Beethoven, and because it had the lovely singing of Pilar Lorengar. In addition, there's spoken text delivered by narrator Wussow, who makes the German language sound positively beautiful. Even if you don't understand German at all, you'll be impressed. The wonderful Egmont overture is powerfully delivered by Szell (who decides to hum along during the closing bars), and the rest of the music is Beethoven you don't hear every day, including a number of lovely melodies sung by the wonderful Lorengar. This is a little jewel of a CD.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Szell Brings A Re-evaluation.......2005-09-21

Kudos to Decca for bringing together in one convenient set George Szell's recordings that were made for the Decca & Philips labels from the early 1950s and to mid 1960s (minus those recordings where he acted in the role of accompanist, ie: those with pianist Curzon). These recordings are very well known and have been collector's items for many years, so to have them together in a mid-price box is self recommending.

The Philips recordings were issued a few years ago as a 2-CD set in their "Early Years" series while a few of the Decca recordings have already been released as singles in their Classic Sound series (both series saw very spotty distribution Stateside). I detect very little change in the sound quality in these new Decca Classic Sound versions, though the couplings from CD to CD are better programmed here than they were before (Philips had to cram alot of music on those 2CDs).

The most-recommendable recordings in the bunch are Szell's Mozart 34, Dvorak 8, Beethoven Egmont, Mendelssohn Midsummer's Night and Brahms 3. Here, the usual Szell trademarks are fully on display: tight rhythms, crisp articulation and finely graded dynamics. However, I was unexpectedly disappointed in two recordings long held to be top Szell & basic repertoire recommendations: the Beethoven 5 and Sibelius 2.

The Beethoven 5 has always been touted as more relaxed and in better sound than Szell's CBS 5th with Cleveland. But comparing this new Decca re-issue to Sony's recent "Original Jacket" issue of the Cleveland 5th, I didn't find that to be true at all. The Sony version now stands - to me, at least - as the better representation of Szell in this warhorse, both as an interpretation and in recorded sound. Indeed, the Concertgebouw recording suffers from an extremely lackluster and sloppy second movement that probably could have used a retake. Something just isn't right here - conductor and orchestra are not on the same page of the playbook...which is not what one expects in a recording by such a strong-willed technician as Szell. As an overall performance, this Concertgebouw recording is now easily surpassed by Szell's Sony effort, not to mention alternate versions by Kleiber, Karajan, Bernstein and others (but, again, you need to hear the Szell/Sony in the Original Jackets remastering, not the earlier Essential Classics version).

As for the Sibelius 2, we have a situation where poor intonation and hesitant execution in the orchestra knock this version off the pedestal of received opinion. And, with Szell's live Tokyo performance with Cleveland now widely available, his Concertgebouw version comes in direct competition with - Szell himself, and in a much better and much more cohesive recording. With the "if only he had recorded this with Cleveland" caveat removed, the choice is now clear - get the Cleveland version if you want Szell in Sibelius 2. That recording remains a top recommendation, though Ormandy, Maazel, Vanska and even Karajan have all brought their particular strengths to this piece as well, strengths that are much different than Szell's forte(s). There's plenty of room at the top when it comes to great recordings of great music.

Having lived with both the Beethoven and Sibelius for years, it's a bit disconcerting to have to make the above observations, but there you have it.

For the rest of the set, it is good to have Szell's interpretations of Tchaikovsky and Schubert on hand in such good sound. But truth be told, there are better versions out there of these works as well, the Tchaik 4 in particular (which in Szell's hands hangs fire in the least-expected places). The Baroque recordings included here are testament to a long-gone era when the standard Baroque works (worques?) were made acceptable to orchestral audiences by beefing them up to quasi-Wagnerian proportions. And even here, Szell is bettered by his contemporaries like Adrian Boult and Karl Richter in similar repertoire. A Baroque curate's egg if there ever was one.

Having said all of the above, I can still safely recommend this set to just about anyone interested in Szell or the repertoire on offer. Yes - work to work, there are better versions available, some from Szell himself. But *overall,* this set will provide plenty of pleasure and musical excitement to everyone save the anti-Szell wing of the classical music zealotry.

      Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars George Szell is best known from his Columbia recordings.......2005-08-31

George Szell (1897-1970) is best known from his recordings made in the 1950s and 60s for Columbia records, mostly with the Cleveland Orchestra, many of which are now on Sony Classical. But he also made a number of recordings during the same period for Decca and Philips in Europe, with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam; Vienna Philharmonic, and London Symphony, all of which are included in this box. If you think of Szell as a cold, calculating technician - and he could be in some of his Columbia recordings - he has precision here in spades, but also warm sound, perhaps partly from the remastering for this release.

Szell's Concertgebouw Beethoven Symphony 5 is MUCH BETTER than his Cleveland recording. The precision is there, but it also sings, and is warmer than the Cleveland recording (Sony, coupled with Symphony 2). Szell's Vienna EGMONT is one of the best recordings of the work, if not THE best recording of the stereo age, even 36 years after it was recorded. The Sibelius 2 (also with the Concertgebouw) is warm and fine in every way. The Concertgebouw played beautifully for him, and it shows.

The Mendelssohn MIDSUMMER NIGHT's DREAM, Schubert ROSAMUNDE, Mozart Symphony 34, Handel WATER MUSIC and ROYAL FIREWORKS MUSIC are all excellent, too. Some may have favorite performances, but I cannot imagine anything better than Szell's Concertgebouw Mozart 34: perhaps Bohm (DG) and Krips (Philips).
The 5th disc has two classic mono recordings of the early 1950s:
Dvorak's Symphony 8, and Brahms 3, both with the Concertgebouw. The sound is just fine: beautifully remastered, and Szell's performances very solid and musical.

As you can tell, I'm very happy with this, and would advise anyone with $30.00 spare change to pick it up at their first opportunity.
