I bought this CD because I missed listening to the music my grandfather played. This CD brought back a flood of memories for me. Wonderful compilation of my favorite italian classics.

We bought this CD for our daughter's wedding. After reviewing it, we could have saved our money. The version of Funiculi sounded like the Salvation Army band and it was totally lifeless. Lou Monte's Hey Gumbaree (it is actually Eh Cumpare in Italian--that should have given it away) was awful, and he consistently butchers the Italian language in all his other songs (annoying, I mean, couldn't he have learned the right pronunciation?).

While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.

Could have gone to the library for this one.

Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.

This is a beautiful CD filled with the authentic sounds of Italy! Each track brings be back a little farther to the streets of Italy...Rome...Trevi Fountain...bellissimo!!!!

A GOOD VERSION OF A GREAT OPERA.......2004-03-09

This recording has been around for a while, and, in fact, was the first stereo version of this opera to be recorded. It's very well presented here, with first class playing by the Maggio Fiorentina under the peppy direction of Silvio Varviso. The cast is a good one, with tenor Luigi Alva negotiating the difficult tenor role of Lindoro with relative ease. Fernando Corena is a first class basso buffa, and he presents a blustery and fun portrait of Mustafa. His singing is excellent, if his coloratura passagework is not. Rolando Panerai is a lyrical and flowing Taddeo, possibly the best sung account of this role on records. This very fine supporting cast is centered around the Isabella of Teresa Berganza, certainly one of the greatest Rossini mezzos of the post World War II period. Berganza's voice is lovely, and very youthful. She negotiates the Rossini coloratura with mastery, but in the final analysis she is somewhat bland and colorless. She lacks the bravura steamroller style of Marilyn Horne style of Marilyn Horne (who in turn lacked the charm of Berganza!), who herself made a memorable recording of this opera many years later. As far as "Italiana" itself is concerned, this is a perfectly acceptable presentation of the opera, and one which still stands up reasonably well against subsequent competition. To my ears, the best recording of this wonderful opera remains the old mono EMI version with Gulietta Simionato from La Scala, under the baton of Carlo Maria Guilini. Simionato did not have anywhere near the fluency for this music that Berganza or Horne had, but she certainly had style and character, and she made every comical moment count. Guilini, very simply, reincarnates the very spirit of Rossini. But in the absence of this classic version, the London/Berganza account is certainly a valid substitute ---- and of course, there's always Marilyn Horne's spectacular account on RCA ---- though as a performance, I prefer this one.

I didn't know who Ana Bélen was. I was searching for singers singing Italian songs in the world in their language and have come across this record. I have appreciated this tribute to Italian singers such as Claudio Baglioni, Francesco De Gregori, Lucio Dalla, Modugno, Mina, Lucio Battisti, Fabio Concato and Gino Paoli. Ana's voice is both powerful and joyful and it's been able to touch my soul. I like the way she plays these songs. I hope that she means to record a "Viva l'Italia Vol.2" because Italy is full of beautiful songs. Hearing them in Spanish is charming for me because Italian and Spanish are somehow similiar. Brava Ana!

The Italian songs included on this cd are so good that everyone who has a good voice has a sure success with them. And if the singer is the glorious Ana Belen we have got a brilliant result. This Cd is Amazing and so exciting that brings you to the Mefiterranean sea. You must hear it. My favourite song is Respirando

ONLY 13 TRACKS!!!!.......2003-07-09

I bought this CD and there are only 13 TRACKS!!! Beware! The quality is poor as well. Half of the tracks that are on the CD are only around 30 sec. I guess this is what I get for choosing the cheapest CD with Italian music. The CD case even lists there being 40 tracks. The fact that there are no sound samples for this CD (and of course the price) should have been an indication of the quality. Please, choose another CD!!!
