Great album - a continuation of his 'Master Sessions'.......2004-03-21

This is a great album from the guy who invented Mambo. 'Cuba Linda' is a logical progression on the 'Master Sessions' albums. This album has a different feel than the 'Master Sessions' albums - a little more spontaneous and lively. 'Cuba Linda' is a bit more upbeat - Cachao plays everything from Danzon, ChaChaCha, Abakua, Son, among others. The musicians are great, masters from Luis Conte to Orestes Vilato join Cachao. I also recommend 'Dos', 'Descargando', 'Master Sessions, Vol. 1 & 2'. In fact, anything from Cachao is well worth investing.

If you enjoy cachao you OWE it to yourself to explore the Buena Vista Social Club, unless you've been under a rock since 1997 then you should know who they are, if you don't then check them out, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!.

Lively Beats! Great dinner and working music........2003-06-16

This was my first introduction to Cuban music - what a fantastic choice! I've danced around to it while making dinner for friends and played it in the background while I'm working on the computer. I really love music that has a fun beat but isn't distracting. Thanks to this CD, I look forward to exploring more Cuban music (maybe a compilation album for my new one).

Israel " Cachao" Lopez is a musical icon, who contributed heavily to the magnificent musical legacy of Cuba. He comes from a famous family, and helped to launch the mambo musical form. Listeners who have come to Cuban music via Saint Ry should check this out.

So good I bought it twice.......2004-12-25

I bought this once gave it to a friend who played trumpet...then I found it a few years later and bought it incredibly cheap new! I love most of the tracks on here because of the huge amount of energy....you can hear some mess ups and what have you but I think they add to the whole effect of the album. its really fun to listen to and there is some really good energy! It makes me want to be a latin piano player!!! Great buy! I love it I love it!

A very decent sampler of dance/party music. Although only 44 minutes long, the low price and rowdiness of this CD makes up for any faults. This is Latin music at its most fun.

Recorded in 1996 in his native Cuba, Alfredo Rodriguez's Cuba Linda is an exciting and ambitious melange of Afro-Cuban styles. At the center of it all is the daring and unpredictable piano work of the leader, shining atop the feast of percussion that highlights Joe Boyd's highly textured production. The richness and variety of Cuba's musical traditions is on full display. "Cuba Linda" begins with a lovely solo-piano passage before exploding into a vibrant rumba. "Cuando Vuelvo A Tu Lado" is an elegant dance number graced by romantic violins. "Canto de Palo" is a traditional folk song with call-and-response vocal chants and some of Rodriguez's most thrilling piano work. "Drume Negrita" is a delicate, stately lullaby that is deepened by Rodriguez's florid rolls and harmonic experiments. The crowning achievement here, however, is the closing "Para Francia Flores (y Para Cuba También)," which begins with a dramatic piano statement, adds a stirring piano-vocal duet passage, and builds slowly to a tension-releasing crescendo with blaring Chinese cornet and pounding piano. --Marc Greilsamer

Best Latin Jazz Release That Year!.......2000-06-08

From the opening bars of the salsa descarga of track 1, this exuberant CD celebrates pianist/composer Rodriguez' return to his native Cuba. The musicianship of the band is superb and the leader's rhythmic and sure piano guides them and the listener through a rollicking survey of all the styles of Afro-Cuban music, combining respect for roots with a modern sensibility. This was surely the finest Latin-jazz recording the year of its release, and it has held up through repeated listenings as a real treasure.
