"What if Marco Polo had owned tape recorder?" This intriguing concept is raised in the liner notes to this impressive two-CD set, which wanders along ancient Asian trade routes known as the Silk Road. The first disc, Masters & Traditions, deals with formal styles performed by and for sophisticated connoisseurs. Meanwhile, the music on Minstrels and Lovers is played by amateurs who are part of daily life and thus reach a wider audience. The imaginary caravan passes through Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Afghanistan, encountering nomads, mystics, and bards along the way. The instruments are scratchy, pungent, and/or serene, while the singers weave a potent spell out of a millennium's worth of slow-changing rural and urban vistas. In the opening essay, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the project's artistic director, pleads for intercultural communication and empathy. This compilation provides an exotic, brave, entertaining first step in that direction. --Christina Roden
Album Description
What if Marco Polo had owned a tape recorder? And what if his epic travels along the Silk Road had taken place not at the end of the 13th century, but at the beginning of the 21st? Far-fetched conjectures to be sure, but our compilation The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan offers a glimpse of the rich musical life that an intrepid and curious traveler like Marco Polo might find in the lands of the Silk Road today.
Customer Reviews:
Be a Marco Polo of music.......2007-05-06
Its rather difficult to review this in the regular like it/don't like it way. This is the endemic music of the people along the silk road the runs across Asia. Some of it sounds very strange compared to Western music, like study for an Anthropology course, while some of it very enjoyable.
Northern Exposure.......2007-03-30
This anthology is an outstanding survey of the northern section of the so-called Silk Road, taking us from Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran, through Uzbekistan, southern Siberia, China, and finally to Japan, but not in order, as the CD set is organized instead by category of musical function and the localities seem random. Although there are significant gaps in the styles, and I particularly miss the sweet lyric songs of Kyrgyz women, the powerful mugham voice of Qasimov of Azerbaijan, and more examples of the kylkobyz fiddle of Kzakhstan, the set provides a fine introduction of the musics of inner Asia and particularly the instruments. A glossary of instruments is provided, but unfortunately their images are often lacking. All the examples are short by necessity, when many traditional pieces are far longer in duration. For the uninitiated, it will take repeated listening to distinguish the uniqueness of timbre and rhythm from one land to the other; but this similarity of sounds helps demonstrate the role of the trade routes in sharing instruments and styles, such that the Japanese biwa, the Chinese pipa, and the Arabic oud all are related. If you want to attain some feel for the musics of inner Asia, then certainly these disks will meet the requirement.
Sparse Great Songs.......2007-03-29
Some of the pieces on the first cd are "take away" great.
The secound cd is ...
I enjoy "world culture" music and sound however, the secound cd in this double collection was a monotonous let down.
The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.......2007-01-03
Thank you for this part of my research on Central Asia.
Like an Exotic Journey.......2005-08-06
This is the ultimate World Music collection. It features authentic sounds from vastly diverse cultures, assembled in such a way that they don't clash, they flow along like a caravan journey. If you're looking for familiar tunes, this isn't for you. But if you'd like to expand your musical horizons, I highly recommend it.

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30
A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.
With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.
Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17
This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.
How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16
Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.
This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"
The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

The Best Historical CD Ever!.......2003-11-21
I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

Ronstadt at her best.......2007-01-20
Linda R. singing 3 Elvis Costello songs? That's worth the price of admission right there. Party Girl, Talking in the Dark and Girls Talk sound much better here that on the original Costello recordings. They are outright terrific. The rest is competent filler. Overall quite enjoyable. Arguably her best recording.
Trivia: the producer is Peter Asher - the brother of Paul McCartney's very serious 60s girlfriend Jane Asher. Paul got Peter's career started when he gave him the #1 hit World Without Love.
Only an average album.......2007-01-09
Linda Ronstadt had an amazing run in the mid-70s, releasing one terrific album after another, always building on what came before, until Back in the USA, which, while a good album, was not up to her par. On Mad Love she tries out some new wave style, which was simply not her forte. While there are some pretty good cuts here, the album never comes together as a whole and Ronstadt comes off looking like she was vainly searching for a musical style to be comfortable with -- and maybe she was. This one's pretty much for completists only (which is why I picked it up).
Not 'Mad' exactly, but an unusual release from Linda........2006-10-27
Linda Ronstadt never really made it in the UK so it was always a struggle to hear her music. I just used to buy her albums sight unseen, she rarely disappointed me.
As previous reviews state, this New Wave album is a total one-off. Just 31 minutes long, it's packed with rock songs both old and new. One bit of 'news' that we did hear in England was that Elvis Costello, by whom Linda covers three songs, REALLY didn't like what she'd done with his material. Needless to say, I love her breezy, quite poppy take on 'Girl's Talk' and her treatment of the darker 'Party Girl' is first rate too.
'I Can't Let Go' and 'Hurt So Bad', are closer to what Ronstadt was doing at the time though the production fits in with the rest of the album, and the fabulous hit single, 'How Can I Make You', remains one of Linda's finest moments.
The rousing title track and the heavy-ish 'Justine' are two other great tracks but really, this is all good. How I wish she'd done another album in this vein.
After this came another country/rock album, 1982's 'Get Closer', it was absolutely fine but lacked any big hits and soon fell off the charts. The three Nelson Riddle orchestrated standards albums followed, all did very well, especially the forerunner, 'What's New'.
So, 'Mad Love' is Ronstadt at her rockiest and possibly most daring. At this time she was at the top of her tree and this album must have been a risk.
One more thing, although this CD sounds good, it would be great to have at least the first 12 years of LR's career remastered. These editions have been around on CD since I first got my player in 1986, so surely it's time for an upgrade?
Mad about you baby!.......2006-09-07
Another retro-gold classic from "The Queen Of Rock" This CD has shot to the top of my short stack of workout music. To say that "Mad Love" is a high energy-hard rock CD would be an understatement. It flat out kicks you-know-what! If you forgot that this little lady could ROCK, then you need to buy this CD. You will never forget again. Thank you Linda.
Mad Love - Ronstadt.......2006-08-30
I LOVED this record when it orginally came out; I am so excited to relisten to all the songs I loved way back when!

La Stupenda at her best.......2007-05-06
This 2 CD set is entitled "La Stupenda," which creates extremely high expectations. Joan Sutherland meets those expectations on this CD; she is, indeed, "La Stupenda." One of the interesting aspects of this set is Dame Joan's singing some non operatic works (such as "Home Sweet Home" or "Where Are the Songs We Sung?" or "Falling in Love with Love"). In the end, this is a wonderful compilation of the art of Joan Sutherland.
First, let's consider a sampling of the cuts on these CDs.
"O Zittre Nicht" is from Mozart's "Magic Flute" and it is a challenge to sopranos, with its series of staccato high notes. Sutherland essays this well. There are some nice trills; she hits the high notes well. The series of (treacherous) high notes toward the end is handled very nicely by Sutherland. In short, she scintillates, with a closing high note well hit.
From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix," she sings "O luce di questi'anima." Her voice and technique are well suited for Donizetti (and Bellini). The cantabile is smoothly sung. The cabaletta is rollicking. Her coloratura technique is on target; the ornamentation is compelling. There are trills, runs, high notes and other ornamentation well done. The close is nice (although there may be a bit of a scoop on the final high note).
From "Beatrice di Tenda" (by Bellini), we hear ""Eccomi pronta. . .Deh, se un'urna." The cantabile is sung well. She hits notes clearly. The spirited cabaletta follows. Sutherland exhibits somewhat less ornamentation than usual, but trills are well done and, overall, the piece is nicely sung. The close features clean high notes.
"Home Sweet Home." This kind of illustrates Joan Sutherland's work nicely. I can hardly make out the words (and it is sung in English). But it is an interesting version. She sings the song straight, without overpowering the song with operatic technique (an occasional trill actually works out well).
Elsewhere, I have commented on her 1959 version of the "Mad Scene" from "Lucia di Lammermoor" (from her album "The Greatest Hits").
"Falling in Love with Love" is an interesting cut. This is a classic Rodgers and Hart song. Sutherland sings it pretty well, and one can pick up the words cleanly. However, one might compare this with Anna Moffo's version, which is more musical. Sutherland's version is a bit too operatic for what the song is about.
Finally, "Ah non giunge" from Bellini's "La Sonnambula," a great coloratura tune! This is taken at a sprightly pace. Sutherland exhibits good coloratura technique. There is nice ornamentation. She precisely nails high notes. In the repeat, the florid singing ramps up. This is a compelling version, with series of staccato high notes to close the work out.
Thus, this 2 CD set is a welcome entrée to the body of work of Dame Joan Sutherland. Sometimes (as with "Home Sweet Home") one has a hard time picking out the words. But with Sutherland, the skills and techniques create a compelling oeuvre that is well worth attending to.
this is the one to buy.......2007-04-18
I'm not an opera expert I just enjoy it. La Stupenda has the best of Joan Sutherland in a two CD set and it's amazing. She looked like a nice, quiet housewife but an indescribalbe voice. Her aria from Norma gave me chills and her version of "I Dreamed I Dwelt in Marble Halls" is flat out one of the prettiest things I've ever heard.
La Stupenda lives up to her name.......2006-11-12
Joan Sutherland was undeniably one of the greatest operatic sopranos of the 20th century. This comprehensive two-CD retrospective of her long career will delight her many fans, and serve as a fitting introduction for those unfamiliar with her artistry. The two CDs span a period of nearly thirty years, from 1959 to 1988, with the majority of the 27 tracks recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, when her voice was at its' astounding best. Sutherland was renowned first and foremost as a dramatic coloratura, and her supple technique is brilliantly illustrated in selections such as the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor; Doll Song from The Tales of Hoffmann; Queen of the Night aria from The Magic Flute; and the seldom-performed Concerto for Coloratura Soprano by Gliere. As her career progressed, her voice became larger and more powerful, as demonstrated by the Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, and In Questa Reggia from Puccini's Turandot. Lastly, Sutherland was a diva who was not afraid to let her hair down once in a while, and we are treated to lighter selections such as Where are the songs we sung? by Noel Coward, and Falling in love with love, by Rogers and Hart. Highly recommended for all lovers of great singing.
La Stupenda, Amore, amore, amore.......2006-01-28
I adore this woman's voice. And I love this cd. I was really happy to find an aria of "Esclarmonde" which is virtually impossible to find as well as some of the more lesser known works of hers such as Mozart's Queen of Night, although I wish she had done a recording of the revenge aria (Der Holle Roche) The whole cd was wonderful to hear but if I had to make on complaint it's that I didn't buy her Isolde's Liebestod but the woman can sing Lucia better than just about anyone so I'll forgive her for not sticking with the Wagner. In fact I am thrilled that she chose Lucia over Isolde because frankly acting and interperation was never her strong suit, it was the pure beauty of her voice. It's always a grand pleasure to listen to Joan kick butt in any coloratura arias but of course she set the bar so high that there is yet a coloratura since her that can do those arias half as well. She has spoiled me for life and that's why she is La Stupenda.
La Stupenda - well deserved title for Joan.......2006-01-12
I am not an opera expert by any stretch of the imagination - but I love opera. I love the expertise and beautiful voices of these hardworking singers. When I first heard Joan sing, it was from a recording she made late in her career and I honestly thought, what's the big deal about her? So, I decided to get The Art of Prima Donna album, and all I have to say is WOW! In her prime, this woman was a fantastic singer! While she wasn't the dramatist like Callas was (I also love Callas), her range and the way she hit each note so precisely was amazing! So, I bought La Stupenda. I loved the piece she did from Handel's Alcia and the fantastic Rossini duet she did with Marilyn Horn. The entire album is wonderful. I particularly like how Joan's high notes are never screechy - she makes those high notes sound so effortless. I also appreciate how she had such control over her vibrato - not too trilly (I like trilly - especially by Beverly Sills - however, not every song should be all trill). Finally, I think that Joan was one of the few sopranos that didn't try to drown everyone out. When she sang a duet, she blended with the other singer - how rare! Not all singers seem to be able to accomplish that - duets shouldn't be a competition. This album is worth every penny. Joan was one of the great singers of the 20th century and she deserves her title of La Stupenda!

Brilliant Melodies and Seductive Lyrics.......2007-06-14
This album is like a great wine, is timeless, brilliant and refreshing. The more I listen to it the more I like it. Robi Draco Rosa's masterpiece is indeed a great album not only because Draco is a real musician (writer, composer, performer etc) but rather because this album sounds great across genres. Draco gives us a taste of musical fusion: Flamenco, Salsa, Rock and Pop merged with ultimately romantic lyrics creating an album for any occasion. His ability to create music beyond cultural constraints makes Mad Love an album for all kind of people. If you are looking for a brilliant melodies and seductive lyrics, I would highly recommend you to get this album, you will Madly Love it!!!
A Classica Love Album.......2007-02-08
Draco Rosa is a excellent musician and so is his band. Draco is one of the most exciting artist out there at this time and this album justifies that comment. This album has been in my cd player for over a year and I must say I give a listen at least every other day. This album is a classic and when you hear it you will agree. Love is the focus on this one.

Brilliant.......2006-02-25
This CD is amazing, I recommend it to all. Every song is excellent. Que bella voz.
A Work of Art.......2005-07-03
I'll be blunt: This album is my favorite album of the past 5 years. And that is saying something, because I listen to many artists across many different genres. It took a few listens to grow on me at first, but now I appreciate it more with every play. The amount of passion and love that the artist put into the album is obvious. His lyrics are like poetry, yet still have clear hooks. His voice is eerily similiar to Stings' at places, but it is very expressive. The production is simply beautiful and layered, I dare you to find a more well crafted album. I only wish Draco would tour more here in the US. For those who don't know, Draco was a songwriter for hits such as "Livin la vida loca", "The cup of life", and even Sisqo's "The Thong Song"! He has the songwriting thing down 100%, and coupled with the passion of the material here, it is a stunning combination. Buy this album now!!!

Enjoyable.......2005-08-23
If you like TV/movie soundtracks, and Andromeda, you should like this. Good Andromeda music, also contains the two different opening themes. (Remember, it is a TV soundtrack so it contains synthesized music.) I enjoy listening to it, and can have it playing in the background at work too without it being bothersome.
A Great Soundtrack.......2005-02-01
The soundtrack to Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is one of the best sci-fi soundtracks to come out in quite a while. I found the music exciting, interesting and intriguing, and on several tracks simply exhilarating; composer Matthew McCauley really does take you on a musical roller-coaster, from the stately High Guard Theme to Dylan's theme to Trance's and Beka's themes to the Nietzschean Attack theme. McCauley musically explores each character, underscoring and enhancing their unique personality. The album has kind of a New Age-ish sound to it on several tracks which gives it a mysterious ethereal quality. A great score for a great series. Composer Matthew McCauley certainly knows his stuff. This is just great music whether or not you're a fan of the show!
love it.......2003-08-08
Great presentation of soundtrack. Interesting instrumentals for even those who are not familiar with the show. I listen to it practically all the time!
A great television score!.......2002-03-27
First off, this is a television soundtrack, not a movie soundtrack-- many of the "instruments" are synthesized. Okay, that aside, this is a great album! It's been a long time since I've heard so many different character themes on a tv soundtrack. From the Heroic "Dylan Hunt", to the brooding "Rev Bem and Magog" music, to the outright ominious "Neitzscheans" themes, this album is a winner. It's nice that the producers also included Alex Lifeson's "March of the High Guard" theme from season 1, which is regrettably no longer used on the show. The music on this album takes you on a emotional roller coaster-- from mysterious, to brooding, to heroic and back again. High recommended for fans of both scores and the television series alike!

Mad Love Review.......2000-12-21
I bought this CD in 1996 after renting the movie and loving it. It's an amazing soundtrack that replays every moment of the movie in your heart. It's one of my favorite CDs. "Mockingbird" is a terrific slow song with a unique voice. And the opening song from Magnapop is my other fav. I just heard that Kirsty MacColl died. She sings the love song on this soundtrack, a song that is sure to break your heart.

Good group, disappointing collection.......2007-03-27
I'm sorry I cannot endorse the enthusiatic reviews below.
I bought this CD based on the Baltimore Consort's fine, fun collection of Renaissance French tunes (La Rocque 'n' Roll") and my own love of traditional Irish music. Perhaps I have been spoiled by too many Chieftains CDs, but I found only one tune here memorable, or even interesting: Custer LaRue's rendition of "Catty (sic) Magee" in Gaelic.
If you like the Baltimore Consort (and Custer LaRue), get another CD of theirs. If you like traditional Irish music, try another group.
Amazing music..........2006-12-20
Heard one song on the radio and I knew I had to have this cd. Firmly rooted in tradition, and yet surprisingly contemporary. You'll dance, you'll cry, the whole nine yards. What a gifted group of musicians! Wonderful.
Wow!.......2005-01-25
This CD is a great collection of Celtic music -- period. The Baltimore Consort has never disappointed with any of their collections; from the strong start with "The Mad Buckgoat" through the final notes of "Billy From Bruff," this one maintains the trend. I strongly recommend that this be part of anyone's Celtic music collection.
Rich, lively and mysterious!.......2002-11-29
This release by the Baltimore Consort is a real treat for both Celtic and Renaissance music lovers! These are some of the best improvisers in the business. Combining wind and stringed instruments of the Renaissance into an English "broken consort", these virtuoso musicians interpret old tunes for a new audience, offering delightful melodies, blown, bowed and sung, over sprightly plucked accompaniments. Their sound is distinctly their own: Renaissance-based, but with liberal touches of folk, bluegrass and even a bit of modern jazz. On this recording you'll hear both spirited and wistful Irish tunes, which were gathered together in published collections from 1724 through 1909. Chris Norman's inventiveness on wooden flute, whistles, bagpipes and bodhran gives an especially Celtic flavor to the renditions. The Baltimore Consort has recorded many CDs for the Dorian label, and all of them are terrific, but this one is my favorite. Not to be missed! Try also "A Trip to Killburn: Playford Tunes and their Ballads" for early hits from the English dance scene.
captures a sense of historic Irish humor, sadness and melody.......2002-01-27
Having just returned from Ireland this last summer, I listened to this CD with renewned interest. I felt that the music reflected the history and music that I experienced on that lovely trip. The Baltimore Consort is a talented and senistive musical group that does an exceptional job of bringing this Irish spirit through in this CD. A culture's music is often a window into it's people's soul and if you listen to this CD I think you will have a glimpse of the grand Irish character.

Sir Noel Coward is KING!.......2007-01-09
Very few of us lesser mortals can compete with the genius of Noel Coward, however we certainly can enjoy it! A master of lyric, pun, innendo, and rhyme, Noel will keep all laughing throughout this collection.
Caberet at its Best.......2006-07-11
This is a live recording of a Noel Coward performance in the 1950's at the Desert Inn. The songs are quite a bit racier than his usual studio recordings from the 1920's and 30's; all very witty and very fun. A stand out performance of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" features references to everyone from Somerset Maugham to Senator Joe McCarthy. Unique.
witty, classic genius.......2005-12-13
My old LP was lost in a recent move! I have loved this album along with "Noel and Gertie" since I first heard it at the age of twelve. Sir Noel Coward is not to be missed.
