Salsa con caracter........2006-03-08

Dificilmente se podria condensar lo mejor de Barretto en un solo disco, pero este disco nos ofrece un buen repertorio de la musica del maestro. Yo personalmente no puedo evitar las ganas de bailar, y no dejo de maravillarme con la brillante ejecucion de Barretto en las tumbadoras y de la complejidad de los arreglos musicales de sus interpretaciones. Tuve la gran fortuna de ver a Barretto en Fort Lauderdale en el 2005, y a pesar de que su estado de salud no era optimo, se necesito que pasaran dos canciones para que el publico saliera del hechizo de tener al maestro en frente. Este disco, entre muchos otros del maestro, ejerce la misma magia que experimente en ese concierto, literalmente me deja con la boca abierta.

I've been listening to some of Ray Barretto's work now for over a year. I hear his music constantly during performances at Salsa Congresses and well as clubs in LA and NY. I've collected a variety of his CDs, some being more for Jazz enthusiasts than for dancing Salsa. This album, however, knocked my socks off. Just about all my favorite Ray B. tracks are on here, my favorite being "Acid". I once heard a friend tell me that it's a song that could even make then dead get up and dance.

This is definitely one of my all-time favorite CDs. I highly recommend it.

After Tito Puente, the next giant of salsa music is undoubtedly Eddie Palmieri. This CD features some of his best cuts recorded from the mid-60's to early 80's. This is a great CD.

Superb compilation of his best works........2004-04-27

Because so many of Eddie's classic albums ("Molasses", "Vamonos Pa'l Monte", "Justice/Justicia", "Echando Pa'lante", "Palo Pa'Rumba" and "Solito" among others) are absolutely indispensable for any serious salsero, it's almost impossible for any one compilation to do his work justice. This CD does include most of his best-loved songs from the 1960s through the mid-'80s (from the Tico, Alegre and Fania vaults), however, and also has excellent sound quality. I highly recommend it as a "Greatest Hits" package but if you are really into this music you must also get the above-mentioned classic albums (all of which are now available on CD).

Cheo's best from the Fania years on one great CD........2004-05-14

This wonderful CD contains virtually all of Cheo's uptempo salsa hits from the Fania years with the classics ("Anacaona", "Nabori", "Brinda Por Mi", "El Raton", etc.) all included. The liner notes also give us a close look at Cheo's musical life and career and the remastering on all tracks is excellent. My only complaint is that no slow-tempo boleros were included but if you can only afford one Cheo Feliciano CD, this one will do.

Lo Mejor De Cheo/The Best of Cheo.......2003-08-25

Hailing from Ponce, Puerto Rico, one of the greatest "Soneros" (Improvising Salsa singer)of all time, this CD contains nothing but pure swing. From the days with Joe Cuba's sextet("El Raton", "Nina") to his triumphant solo career ("Anacaona", "Salome") are in this CD. A nice compilation, based on Cheo's sabor (flavor). I highly recommend
this production. Cheo's mesmerizing voice and top notch bands will keep you dancing all night long.

Good introduction to Barretto's Fania years........2006-02-22

This collection skims over many Fania recordings and features Barretto's different bands. If you don't own any of Barretto's salsa recordings, this compilation is a good start.
As for the sound quality, it is better than most. These tracks seem to be remastered. Remember, as previosly mentioned these classic tracks are taken from different periods (60's-90's)and as such, some do show their age a bit.

Great Collection.......2005-09-15

For those of you intol 'old school salsa' this CD should be part of your collection. Although it does not contain ever great song put out by Ray in and of itself it makes a great compilation. Enjoy!

Great Compilation.......2003-11-15

In reference to a previous review, this CD is NOT a tribute album! It is a compilation of some of Ray Barretto's best salsa cuts(originals). With 13 smokin' tracks, this Barretto compilation is hard to beat!

The reference of another reviewer to "Rican-Struction" is not to a group, but rather the 1979 Barretto album Rican/Struction on which Tumbao Africano was originally released. An excellent Cd in fact, and a good one to add to your collection if you prefer original albums over compilations!

Ray Barretto, Master Conguero.......2003-10-07

This is an array of Ray's hits throughout his years at Fania.
From top to bottom this CD cooks. I especially love "Tumbao Africano" from his 1979 album "Rican/Struction" with its Jazz and African influences accompanied by Adalberto Santiago's smoking vocals. But I recommend this to the true Hardcore Salsa Fanatics, you should have this one in your collection if you are just starting. This one will be great to have, I assure you. "Acid", "Cocinando", & "Indestructible" are also great, Salsa classics. Like I said, Recommended. Oh, and this isn't a tribute album, this is Ray, the real deal, Hardcore salsero. I should know, I own it.

I just happened to find this CD at my local Borders and every track is sizzling hot. An awesome CD to expose those who are new to the Salsa scene to one of classic salsa's greats. Also recommend Ray Barreto Salsa Caliente de NuYork. It looks like they're on to something with the "Salsa Caliente De NuYork" compilations.
