Good Recording of an Uneven Work: The Bonus Brujo is Best.......2001-07-22

De Falla's "L'Atlantida" remained unfinished at the composer's death. Ernesto Hallfter attempted to complete the work which was presented in various stages of revision. This performance from La Scala represents Hallfter's next to last edition of the work. If you are expecting the usual highly coloristic/folkloristic writing of De Falla, you will be disappointed. In "L'Atlantida" De Falla experimented with a lot of compositional and orchestral styles--Stravinsky, Orff, Honegger--to communicate a libretto which intermixes some of Hercules's adventures with the destruction of Atlantis and Queen Isabella's investment in the voyages of Columbus. Throw in a lot of Roman Catholic religiosity to hold it all together. The Orchestra and Chorus of La Scala do an admirable job with the mish-mash score under the direction of Thomas Schippers. A very mezzo-soprano-sounding Teresa Stratas beautifully inflects the short passages of Queen Isabella in honeyed tones. Giulietta Simionato takes the even smaller role of Queen Pyrene at her death and does what she can with it. The other soloists are adequate. Frankly the work lacks much dramatic tension or memorable melody though the orchestral and choral writing is inventive, lush, albeit rather academic-sounding. The real treat is a bonus "live" performance of "El Amor Brujo" with Teresa Berganza. Ataulfo Argenta whips a sizzling performance out of the French National Radio Orchestra. Berganza really sings the solos with just the right blend of pristine musicianship and earthy emotion.

The Sabandeños were chosen in the 70's as one of the 80 best folk groups of the world by World Records magazine . After saying that , my only advice is that you look for their cds , specially the ones of the 70's. If you listen their cds of the 70's , get ready for the big surprise !!!!.
This cd is in the usual quality standard, so 5 stars.

One of a number of exquisite albums recorded by this Canarian group. Unfortunately the albums seem only to be mostly available in the Canary Islands. Do not hesitate to snap up any album by Los Sabandenos that you see - you will not be dissapointed.

Truly numinous sound.......2006-03-29

If you are seeking to elevate your spirit through sound, then this album is a must buy. Not only is the singing beautiful and captivating, all the choral pieces in this album have that mystical quality to them that transports a person from the mundane of everyday life to the frontiers of the infinite. The choral piece number 7 called "Salve Montserratina" is simply amazing and ranks with the very top in sacred music. It easily compares with pieces like Mozart's "Lacrimosa" from his Requiem.
I was surpirsed to see that this album had not been reviewed so far. I hope that everyone reading this review will take the time to listen to it and get it.
