5 out of 5 stars I remember Barretto (The Acid Conga) player!.......2006-03-30

I personally do not consider this CD his best. He has other albums with better music. Barretto ranks as one of my favorite conga players. On this CD he does not have many conga solos but, the songs are very good. He was one of the first New York Ricans to interpret the Afro-Cuban music in New York, with the hit "El Watusi". To me my favorite albums from him are "Que Viva La Musica" and "Acid/Head Sounds". I still remember him doing a conga duel with Mongo at the Yankee Stadium during the Fania All Stars concert, it was difficult for the crowd to take sides between him and Mongo, these guys really put up a great show that night. The concert had to be cancelled do to an uncontrolled fight between the fans. I also remember him when he came to Miami (1977) to play with Fania All Stars at The Miami Beach Convention Center. The place was packed, and all the Miami Beach residents (Elderly Jews) were amazed at the enormous young Latin crowd. I had a good time seen all my favorite Latin celebrities on stage for the first time. It was a sad day for me when I was informed by my Puerto Rican friends of his recent death. Another good conguero leaves us. +Ray Barretto+ R.I.P

5 out of 5 stars An all-time classic. Ray and Adalberto at their vey best!!!.......2006-10-03

No serious salsero should be without this CD as it's simply and undeniably an undisputed all-time classic. This album brought together all of the elements that made the previous Barretto/Santiago collaborations so special but added two very jazzy and experimental numbers ("Algo Nuevo" and "Tumbao Africano"). The great Adalberto Santiago's vocals are glorious and beyond any reproach whatsoever on such immortal masterpieces as "Ya Ves", "Al Ver Sus Campos" and "Algun Dia Sere Feliz". Almost 30 years after its original release this album remains as important and enjoyable as back then and...it's a MUST for your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars el disco de la salsa!!!!!! AlbertoEgoavil(Lima-Peru).......2006-09-30

    5 out of 5 stars Zenon, Perdomo, and Glawischnig . . ........2004-02-25

. . . gearing up for their real work, Zenon's astounding debut, Ceremonial.

Yes, these three (Glawischnig, bass; Perdomo, piano; and Zenon, alto sax) form the band (with brilliant drummer Antonio Sanchez, who doesn't play on this disc) that produced one of the finest examples in the burgeoning Nu Latin-jazz. It's almost ironic that here they find themselves in a band playing music in tribute to a man who helped launch the careers of everyone from Horace Silver to Lee Morgan to Wayne Shorter to Bobby Watson to Wynton Marsalis.

And I certainly don't intend to demean this disc or its esteemed leader by focusing on the younger players. It's just that with Ceremonial we can see that they've so thoroughly absorbed their lessons they've come up something that places them, conceptually, compositionally, sonically, and conversationally way beyond the purview of the music on this disc, enjoyable as it is.

With half the disc being compositions by probably the greatest Messenger, Wayne Shorter, this could just as easily have been called Homage to Wayne--although that lacks the nuance and resonance of Homage to Art, which can be taken in a number of different ways.

I was originally going to dock this disc a half star, on account of I don't generally like tribute discs, and because I originally thought it sounded a little too monochromatic. On repeated listens, I've changed my mind. This is truly a great Latin-jazz disc, right up there with Chucho Valdes's New Conceptions and Babatunde Lea's Soul Pools. Graced by simply wonderful playing throughout, the band rhythmically reconfigures the more and less familiar Shorter tunes in imaginative and very pleasing fashion.

Completely enjoyable, and not to be missed by anyone who fancies Latin jazz, be it Nu or traditional.

    5 out of 5 stars FM Fernandez.......2003-04-21

Because of its strong material--by Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, etc.--, and the magnificent and cohesive playing by the band, this is a highlight in Ray Barretto's output. Whether playing Cuban music or jazz, Barretto's bands have always been outstanding, and this recording shows that he continues to be a very fine leader. Highly recommended.

These two lp's from early in Barretto's career, are perhaphs the finest sessions he ever led. The sidemen all are on FIRE!!! These heated sessions feature mambos, cha cha's(or what we now call salsa). Whatever you want to call it Afro-Cuban jazz, salsa dancing music, or pachanga music, it is party music for dancing, as well as legit jazz for lsitening. exotic percussions by Barretto, and great jazz gorn solos. Entrancing, enhcanting, and fun music. ESSENTIAL salsa and Latin jazz.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Barretto on Fania.......2000-08-24

Ray Barretto's work on Johnny Pacheco's Fania label is some of the best salsa of the late 60's and 70's. This is tough rhythm. Good songs, too. Hard Hands is in the same vein. Get them both.

Incidentally, the sound is very different from the more recent New World Spirit recordings (which are in a Latin Jazz vein).

3 out of 5 stars Emusica off to a Latin start with Fania catalog.......2007-01-23

Fania's catalog has been so mismanaged nay just plain neglected over the past 30 years (i once bought a copy of a willie colon lavoe cd - te mato- and it sounded like total distortion ... there had clearly been a problem with it and yet there it was) I have high hopes that things will improve now that Emusica bought the catalog but this Barretto compilation gives me some cause for concern. I do not understand the philosophy behind this compilation... it seems fania just wanted to include 1 or 2 tracks from each album with no concer for what they were including... Why would you include the same number of tracks (and shorter as they were done earlier) from seminal albums such as Acid, Together and Hard Hands as you would from Barretto's latter day efforts which had nowhere the impact and to these ears sound like more standard fare salsa. In fact the first cd is the one with the different rhythms etc... but they neglected some incredible stuff including some tracks he recorded with fania all stars which he wrote and should have been part of this compilation (i'm thinking of some tracks from the live at the red garter cds).. meanwhile the second cd is mainly post 72 Barretto and most tracks sound fairly similar...It just does not pack the same punch... Since CD1 has 15 minutes empty space and CD2 has another 15 or so they could have easily included more from early era Barretto... The liner notes are pretty shoddy affair with for example in the english notes riverside records honcho orrin keepnews (who anybody that knows anything about music knows who he is) is mispelled orrin keepnuevo as if they did a spellcheck in spanish or something and replaced "news" with "nuevo"...lame...barretto deserves a 100% treatment.. the notes tell us what album the songs come from but provide no dates, session players or anything else!!! the session players deserve better!... silly.. this is the typical mishandling of art by people who traditionally own latin music catalogs.. if they really want to do for fania what blue note did with its back catalog, which is what they've claimed, they got a long way to go.... also, there is no explanation of what happened when barretto's musicians left him around 72 to form their own group Tipica 73.. I give this four stars because the music is just great (although in my opinion too much 70s stantard salsa) and not enough early bugalu etc from the 60s... in fairness i should also say the sound is pretty good with two notable exceptions which are tracks 6 and 10 both coincidentally (not!) from "hard hands" which sound shoddy and buzz.. clearly an inferior source was used for these as they do not sound at all as good as the rest.. they should have just used a mint lp which they could have found on ebay for a bill... as mentioned the song selection is questionable and the liner notes leave a lot to be desired..it just seems like an opportunity was wasted to give barretto the 100% class act compilation he deserves... final quibble: to call this comp "a man and his music" is probably not the right way to go because barretto was very much about jazz too which is not represented here...

5 out of 5 stars THE LATE GREAT RAY BARRETTO.......2007-01-07

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO OUT AND BUY ALL OF RAY BARRETTO'S ALBUMS, THEN BUY THIS ONE. IT IS A GREAT COMPILATION OF HIS MUSIC FROM THE FANIA AND TICO LABELS. I GUARANTEE YOU WILL LOVE THIS CD!!!!!! LONG LIVE RAY BARETTO!!! SOME OF IT MAY SOUND A BIT DATED (60'S AND 70'S), BUT IT IS GREAT MUSIC NEVERTHELESS.

5 out of 5 stars A superb tribute to an all-time Salsa legend........2006-08-07

The late great Ray Barretto's recordings for the Tico and Fania labels represent an extremely important chapter in the history of Salsa and this compilation offers a fine (if incomplete) overview of his illustrious career. Hopefully, Emusica Records (Fania's new owner) will reissue all of Ray's Tico and Fania CDs. Most of his major hits and trademark tunes are here and no self-serving Barretto fan should be without this great compilation.

A truly superb collection of melodies from Ray Barretto! Ray gave me this CD himself months before his passing, and to this day, I still have not opened it. I had no idea what I was missing for all of these months until I allowed myself to listen to the sample tracks. "Caper for Chris" is without a doubt and in a word, moving! I'm not sure if this means that I will open the CD that Ray gave to me, and I'm sure he's saying, "Papa, knock it off, and open the darn thing!".
For me the TIME spent with Ray while he WAS here IS still special to me, and his music will keep him here with us all.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and heartfelt recording........2006-02-22

Intriging and heartfelt. The last time I saw Ray was over the summer performing these songs in concert at City Hall Park in NYC. I was immediatly drawn to the music and bought the album. I must say that it requires quiet and an attentive mind to enjoy these selections. Once those two prerequisites are in place, this is like one of those books that you keep reading again and again. There is always a new angle to be explored.
But, of course, his conga playing is infectious and I'm sure you'll wanna dance and celebrate the legacy of this great jazz master.

5 out of 5 stars Time Was...is timeless - long live Ray Barretto!.......2006-02-21

Sublime, masterful, gorgeous, deeply satisfying...and now sad, too, because it appears that this will be Ray Barretto's final recording, an exclamation point at the end of a brilliant 50-year career. From the extraordinary rendition of "Drume Negrita" which begins the album, to the equally engrossing highlights "Murmullo" and "Palladium Nights," and ending with "Caper for Chris," Barretto is in fine jazzy form here. I'm especially blown away by his amazing version of the gospel standard "Motherless Child," which is as deeply moving as anything in his long and stellar list of recordings. This set is more in the vein of his Latin jazz records, such as "Portraits in Jazz & Clave," than in the tradition of his salsa albums; but Barretto's salsa albums were always jazz-inflected and bursting at the seams with intelligent razor-sharp arrangements, and his jazz was always injected with the propulsion and syncopation that is so important to salsa dancers. Like Duke Ellington and Tito Puente, he never underestimated his audience and found the way to satisfy dancers and jazz fans alike (and I suspect he would have been proud to hear himself compared to Ellington and Puente, two of his biggest inspirations.) Ray will be remembered as one of the all-time greats, and this gem is a fitting final statement from a master musician. Like Ray Barretto himself, Time Was-Time Is is simply timeless.
