Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This is Cafe Tacuba's first album and the one that put them on the map, and not just in "rock en español" circles. Straight out of the gate they show as much allegiance to the mosh pit as to their Mexican roots, but it is the clever blending of the two that gives them such appeal on both sides of the border. Sometimes irreverent and humorous, this five-piece outfit comes on at times like Madness in sombreros, while at other times they tackle ballads, norteños, and straight pop ditties. Underlying it all is a cultural edge and awareness in their music that demands serious attention, albeit not at the expense of having a really good time. In the process, Cafe Tacuba carve out a diverting and singular territory all their own. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary.......2005-05-06

This is considered by many as Café Tacvba's best album ever, a statement in which I definitely agree.

It is quite difficult to define what this album represents, it shows definitely an evolution, and even though the lyrics' formula is basically the same as in the first album (topics regarding the Mexican culture that go from being for a while in the subway of Mexico city to the old customs of the `Tlatoanis') what made this album so compelling was the wide variety of musical styles that the band decided to include for this work.

During this album we could see where the band was going, Emmanuel started to sing (a pretty cool slam song entitled `El borrego'), the vocalist started to change names (he was known as `Cosme' for this album) and the musical direction they took was vast.

`La ingrata' is nothing but a traditional Mexican song about relationships the Mexican way, `El ciclon' is a song reminiscent of the old progressive rock bands, `Esa noche' a very beautiful ballad about a love long lost.

The 20 tracks included in this album are just unbelievable, every song is different to the other and there is not a single musical style in which to catalogue this album. They attempted several styles and succeeded in all. I can guarantee you that this album will not disappoint but the opposite, everything in this album is just so well done, from the graphic design in the inside booklet to the contents of the cd.

This is a musical jewel that must be part of every music lover collection, regardless of the type of music you like, this album has 20 most enjoyable songs. This album was released in 1994 and I still remember me listening to it all the time in my walkman, a couple of years ago I found it on CD and didn't hesitate to buy it, more that 10 years have passed and this is an album through which years won't pass. A must for music collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Demo of what a great band does.......2004-08-23

This CD is awesome, it makes you think, sing, and dance, all in a smart way. Unlike many songs out there, every song from Re has something interesting to say, accompanied with the sound that characterizes Cafe tacvba for incorporating traditional mexican music with that of their own. The CD has good lyrics, and makes its listening very enjoyable.I definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Simplemente lo mejor.......2004-06-25

Sin duda este disco fusiona el folclor y música típica mexicana, rock y pop. Un gran clásico imperdible para los amates de la música.

If you are a Cafeta fan, you'll really like this cd. This cd has a big range of variety in the moods, styles, rhythms, and everything. You realy can't get bored with this cd. Some of the best songs (to me) is Fin de infancia, Esa Noche, and La Pinta...but like i said, all of them are awesome. If you like this cd, i highly recommend that you check out their other cds like cuatro caminos, valle campana, and tiempo transcurrido. Yeah, what else can i say....they rock. Elfego rocks!!!! aweeee man!!!

5 out of 5 stars Addictive.......2004-02-27

Re by Cafe Tacuba is one of those albums you hear is good from a friend. So you buy it, put it in your cd player, and the first time you hear it it seems odd - like nothing you've heard before. It's Mexican pop music, for sure, but somehow it's deeper, richer and more inventive than you ever might have expected. You decide to leave it in your player and listen to it a few more times, to fully understand it. Before you know it, a week has gone by and you're humming the melodies to Re in the street, and it's not boring to put it on when you get back. It's got so much to keep you in thrall: beatlesque/XTC/radioheadesque pop, mexican guitars, ska, death metal, el mariachi, etc. etc. etc.

After a few weeks you take the disc out of your player and put it on a shelf, but the sounds will always be with you. Those sounds will always bring back the moments of your life when you first purchased Re. It's THAT good of an album.

So, I'm telling you now. Re is a good album, you should pick it up and give it a listen - and let a new season of your life begin.

Cafe Tacuba come straight out of Mexico City with a spicy blend of rock en Espanol, with Jamaican ska/reggae and African-American hip-hop sonic seasonings. And unlike their counterparts, they've managed to keep the critics, record companies, and their fans happy. This CD, which translates as Four Ways, is their first full release since 1999. Lead guitarist/vocalist Elfego Buendía, keyboardist Emmanuel Del Real, bassist Enrique Rangel and guitarist Joselo Rangel--along with R.E.M. and Beck percussionists Victor Indrizio and Joey Waronker--deliver a more raw, stripped-down sound compared to their critically acclaimed recordings Re and Avalancha de Éxitos. Their long-time producer Gustavo Santaolalla is at the helm, but on this go- 'round, the quartet also works with producers Dave Fridmann and Andrew Weiss, who both manned the boards for the bands, Ween, Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. From the high-powered video/single "Eo (el sonidero)" and "¿Qué pasará?" with special guest vocalist Rubén Albarrán (a.k.a. Elfego Buendía), to the philosophical "Mediodía," these tracks show that Cafe Tacuba is moving away from their alternative phase into a mature, Steely Dan type of mainstream sound. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

4 out of 5 stars New direction for Cafe Tacvba.......2006-07-10

I own the other Cafe Tacvba albums (with exception of the "Revés/Yo soy") You know, with this band you'll have a diferent taste for every album, which I think is a great thing because they're always innovating with sounds and blending different styles in one cohesive mix. Prove of this is the "Re" album, an excelent mixture of rock, mexican rythms, boleros and even speed metal.

The good news is that this album is still different and innovative: Electronic samples and textures have been added to some tracks, giving a new and fresh sound to the songs of this band (like on "Encantamiento inútil", "Desperté")But we also have the "classic" Tacvba sound in gems like "Tomar el fresco", "Qué pasará", and "Eres" and the frenetic "Eo". But my favorite track here is the dreamy "Mediodía".

I only comlain about some "fillers" on this record (last two tracks and "Recuerdo prestado") I could've been better without these tracks, makig "Cuatro caminos" a solid and perfect production.

Just one little thing, this special edition come with a nice cardboard packaging. Hope this information will be helpfull.

If you want to find a great spanish speaking band this is it. Cafe Tacuba is amazing and interesting. The styles are diverse and ever growing and provide a wide range of enjoyablilty. I reccomend this to everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Not too good anymore.......2005-04-05

'Eres' is a bit too cheesy!!! This CD is not very interesting, look for their other CD's, it's been downhill since 'RE'.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad!.......2004-07-24

I hadn't heard much of Cafe Tacuba before I picked up this cd, which had a sticker on it with a blurb comparing it to Radiohead's "OK Computer". Doesn't sound like Radiohead at all to me, but it's still really interesting and innovative. I have absolutely no idea what they're saying because I don't speak Spanish, but the music transcends that. It's upbeat, strange, and beautiful. If you want something that's a little different and fun, this is a good choice. Also, the song "Eres" is very pretty.

Cafe Tacuba have a kind of childish mood that may bother some people. If there is a basic story in their lyrics is about the problem of love among younsters, the simple desire for dance, and the weird aspects of love and reality. However, their strenght is their high quality as musicians. Mainly, what should be stressed is both their high capacity for styles mixture and their highly creative covers. They jump from "ranchera" to ska, or reagge , or trash , or disco. Their covers of "Ojalá que llueva café" (Juan Luis Guerra), "No controles" (Mecano) or "Cómo te extraño" (Leo Dan) demonstrate both their creativity and exploration over different kind of music. Tiempo transcurrido is probably the best example of all their "chamaleonistic" capacity. Undoubtely, one of the best recopilation in the rock en español era.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST BAND OF THIS CENTURY!!!.......2002-12-31

I hate greatest hit albums, but whatever you end up buying of Cafe Tacuba, I GUARANTEE, you will not be dissapointed. I prefer getting each album by itself because only they know why they set them up the way they did, but if you'd like to get a taste of their flavor then a greatest hits is the way to go.

I'm a very picky musician, but Cafe Tacuba set me straight and made me an addict. I bought the album "RE" about 3 weeks ago, i listen to it EVERY ... DAY!!! and up to now, i have not got tired of it. I recommend anything that the Tacubos put their hands on. PEACE!

5 out of 5 stars Great album for a wonderful cause!.......2006-07-25

I loved the original edition of "Red Hot & Latin" when it came out 10 years ago, but the new re-issue track is even better! Highlights include the new bonus tracks from Brazilian Girls/Kevin Johansen, Kinky, Nortec Collective, and Thievery Corporation....but the older material also holds up quite well.
I still think that Fishbone and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs' collaboration on "What's New Pussycat" is such a blast - those guys should tour together again some time!

This album was truly groundbreaking when it first came out - there were bilingual collaborations from many acts, WAY before this was commonplace. Any fan of Latin, world, or alternative music needs to own this album.....plus, all the proceeds go to fight HIV/AIDS in Latin America and the U.S. Latino community, so it's for a worthy cause.

To say that the Kronos Quartet's Nuevo is their most adventurous outing to date is hardly an understatement. This diverse collection of Mexican compositions and traditional tunes brims with an unpredictable energy and a dazzling array of Latin American guest performers, and, yes, Kronos keeps up throughout. A cocktail pop tune from Esquivel gets covered, there's a chamber arrangement of Revueltas's sprawling orchestral work Sensemaya, and Nortec Collective member Plankton Man remixes Kronos's interpretation of "El Sinaloense" into a sizzling dance music track, which closes the disc. The playing is spirited, to say the least (just check out "El Llorar," with guest vocalists Alejandro Flores and Efren Vargas). But this is foremost a party record. A bevy of reverb effects and instrumentation (including a squeaky musical leaf solo on "Perfidia") ensures that things stay unpredictable. Production work by Rock en Espanol producer Gustavo Santaolalla infuses this disc with an edgy modernism. The bulk of these compositions have been arranged by composer Osvaldo Golijov, who seemingly brings a manic energy and a playfulness to everything he touches. Chamber music purists may scoff, but the rest of us will be busy dancing and thrilling to this exciting, genre-blurring Kronos project. --Jason Verlinde

Album Description

With 'Nuevo' - a project based entirely around Mexican composers, musical traditions and influences - the Kronos Quartet have delivered one of the most striking group odysseys to date. Produced by Gustavo Santaolalla, both an authority on Latin American art music as well as the most in-demand producers of rock en espanol, the album also features a host of guest artists from both the concert hall as well as the streets of Mexico. Housed in a slipcase. 2002.

3 out of 5 stars screeching mariachi's.......2007-01-09

I bought it for the one-armed grass-leaf player. It's worth it just for that, but the first track is enough to put you off the rest of the album. It gets better once the rhytms overtake the sound.

3 out of 5 stars Good music, disappointing liner notes.......2005-12-07

At about 66 minutes, this recording is a better value than some of their CDs. But one almost constant complaint that I have with Kronos Quartet releases is their poor or non-existent liner notes. This release is especially guilty. There is a big, thick booklet of worthless photography--mediocre pictures reproduced poorly on cheap paper. Were they trying to throw some some photgraphers a bone? There is nothing about the composers (except their birth dates) or their music, or the musician's perspective, etc. And, since some of the composers are deceased, an opportunity was lost to discuss their music and their lives.

Very, very poor production decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2005-11-05

If you by chance still don't know what Kronos`s is about remember that there are two types of chamber music ensembles: Kronos and the rest. So if you have in your mind the traditional sound, aesthetic of a string quartet, go for the rest (Alban Berg, Ittaliano, Melos, Emerson...) and forget Kronos. For if I had only one chance to apply the title- word "avant-garde", I would do it concerning Kronos. They are irreverent. Forget traditional repertoire (and Bartok is traditional for them). As far as I know they play modern music (Glass, Reich, Scnittke) or new repertoire like World Music. They play with amazing virtuosism and richness of textures. If you try to explore Kronos world, open your mind to a new, non conventional type of sounds.
So what is "Nuevo"? A diverse, impressive, multilayered (that is, there are several strata, several kind od compositions) portrait of Mexican music. A comprehensive landscape of Mexican music. But ... not exactly mexican music is what you hear in most of the tracks, but the Kronos' POINT OF VIEW, that is, Mexico through Kronos' glasses. For I don`t find a truly traditional Mexican track (perhaps only "Son Huasteca" and that before 12/12 are those which most resemble to a truly traditional "Mexican" sound). Almost everything in this rich album is a new way of listening to mexican music.
Why? Arrangements are varied and colourfull. Every track shows novelty and spontaneity, even in well known pieces like "Perfidia" or "Sensemaya". All in this CD is "Nuevo (New)": music that you have not listened before, no matter your knowledge on Mexican music!!
The type of music is quite diverse: classical (Sensemaya), TV music (Chavosuite), bolero (Perfidia), local music (Sinaloense), processional music (12/12), even dance music!!
The sound is also quite strange sometimes: the editor distorts some tracks in order to show the quartet as if they were listened through an old radio player. This is quite amazing!!! or listen to 12/12: quartet strings combined with recording of a traditional "ritual" music and fireworks. Also there are includede street noises between the tracks, thus creating a kind of "leitmotive", like a "Concept Album".
Let me say this: I don't care of mexican music. I don't know too much of it. Nor it is something I love. What I like of this CD is not Mexican music legacy but WHAT KRONOS DOES WITH IT. I think they could do the same with every (rich) music culture in the world. The reason why Mexico is chosen perhaps is a personal experience of Kronos' members (as I have red in an interview).
Booklet contains track details, a lot of credits but not a single word of commentary about the music (a pity).
More than great Mexican music, this is a great Kronos show. If you like Kronos or want to investigate what Kronos truly is and /or If you like mexican music, buy it!
If you don't like mexican music, buy it too!! You will think, as I do, that this Kronos release is essential.

5 out of 5 stars f-u-n ........2004-05-27

this is a great album to listen to on a hot summer day at the beach,or any sunny activity in general.I must admit that I do enjoy the darker side of kronos' music more, but one truly can't help but grin when on the third or fourth track the music pauses for a sudden "yelp"!yes,it may sound a bit goofy and the more stern folks are certain to frown upon such playfulness in the "sophistocated"world of classical music, but this is a good thing.as another reviewer stated, the music really isn't very complex but that should be no obstacle for any kronos-loving individual.oh,yes-if you have children be prepared for them to go absolutly BONKERS when you play this!(finally veggietales can be given a rest!)

3 out of 5 stars Mexican music performed by Kronos Quartet ??.......2003-07-26

I had to listen to it !

Well, first I must say that it is very rewarding to find such a talented international ensemble to interpret our music. Some of the tracks are really outstanding. Particularly 12/12 and the Chavosuite.

But, in the other hand, the purposely out of tune interpretation of El Sinaloense is deceiving (do our Mariachis sound so terrible ?) and the solo wistle in "Perfida" really destroyed the sesibility and charm of this melody. I mean, why on earth did't they play it with a violin instead ?

For the rest, it is a very original album, and it shurely reflects the impression that causes our culture. The inclusion of live sounds in a marketplace and of the "carretonero" buying old shoes and clothes, makes a specially beautiful ambiance.

It is also an album with a very humorous approach. (Some of the tracks sound like if they had been arranged by P.D.Q. Bach !) Get it if you are looking for something original and different, but please buy something else if you really want to know what mexican music is.

Mexican trio Cafe Tacuba celebrates 15 years of making--and often revolutionizing--Spanish rock with Un Viaje. This lush, luxurious live set includes three discs of music and one electrifying DVD. (Separate versions are also available, but this generous edition is the most satisfying and is moderately priced.) The group has culled the best moments from a two-night stand in Oct. 2004 at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, and the results are consistently electric. Every song, every rhythm, every guitar lick, every laugh is important, a not-to-be-missed moment. Cafe Tacuba's potent mix of music and message is a powerful thing, and the group thrives in its unflinchingly earnest, sweetly sincere approach to its art. Even during backstage interviews and recording studio hijinks, each member seems wholly pleased to be a part of the process. Throughout the proceedings, Cafe Tacuba's ardent fans thank them with hoots, hollers and constant singalongs to almost every song, making Un Viaje a joyous trip for everyone involved. --Joey Guerra

2 out of 5 stars I Know You Love Them because They Are Mexican, But Please Don't Get Carried Away - This Album Is Boring.......2006-03-01

I give this album 2 stars out of 5, and I AM BEING GENEROUS - primarily because while the Cafe Tacubas play some of their greatest hits onstage, with 100,000 screaming fans, nobody actually stops and notices that while the songs may be (mostly) good, this is really NOT A GOOD PERFORMANCE!! I saw this band live on a few ocassions, and it seems to me like they were at the top of their game right until the moment they released Reves/Yo Soy; a double album of experimental soiunds and forgettable tunes that may be best compared to Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" or the Works of Yoko Ono. Most of the rave reviews listed for this album come from some of their uncondictional fans. But even they would be hard pressed to admit that they only listened to the album maybe twice at most, and then chucked the entire 3 disc-set into the pile of "I'll listen to these someday" CDs. Do yourselves a favor: Buy their first 3 albums and call it a day. This band has had it. And i still don;t forgive them for Reves/Yo Soy. 4 Caminos was not a good album either.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd... and a GREAT DEAL!.......2005-09-23

Leave it to cafe-ta to give its fans such a great deal on not only a wonderful cd, but also on an even greater dvd. This is a must have for all the cafe-ta fanatics... like myself. the dvd it great but i wish that it wasnt so edited. it seemed like they took a couple of concerts and edited them together... and sometimes not so discretely. towards the end of the dvd there are some scenes that cuts from them wearing one thing, to another and back again... all in the same song!... but other than that I LOVE IT... ive probably seen it about 50 times and ive had it for about 2 months! once again.. this is a must have for all CAFE-TA fanatics!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, great price!.......2005-09-07

I was a bit skeptical when I placed the order for cafe tacuba's un viaje. I had read previous reviews that mentioned the quality being a big let down and the sound as well. I listened to the cd before watching the DVD, and did not find a reason for the sound complaints. I actually found it to be pretty clear to the point of feeling part of the concerts in which the recordings took place.

I sat to watch the DVD and realized that the critics of the image quality must have only seen the beginning of the concert which was done in black and white with a grain effect to accent the songs that were being performed. I thought this was pretty unique, as well as other methods of filming that were employed for the concert.

The band gives a great performance as always and is translated into the 3 CD's and DVD that complies un viaje. I think this is a great buy for the price is being sold for.

4 out of 5 stars Good deal.......2005-09-02

This cd was a great one. If you've ever seen Cafe Tacvba perform live you know how it is....the band...the people...the music. This cd brings out that vibe. Plus, its a great deal. You get three cds and one dvd for one low price.

5 out of 5 stars Wow........2005-08-31

So, I saw these amazing guys at the Gibson Amphitheatre on July 3rd (although at the time I had only known one song of theirs and was really there for Kinky), as soon as the show started for them, I decided to stay, I mean- why would I be a punk and leave? There must have been a reason why the thousands of fans showed up, paid the price, and showed energy. That's exactly what you get in the audio/dvd. You get the energy, (not as much in the DVD since the cinematographic qualities are not what one would expect from this amazing band), but get over it. They have purposely made it easy for you to be a part of something that was really special to them, their 15th anniversary. If you complain, then you're just a whiny person who just doesn't get that they did this FOR YOU. SO YOU COULD ENJOY IT with yourself or others. The selection of songs is impeccable and I hope they come back to LA very very soon.

ORALE THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER.

5 out of 5 stars Obra de Arte Mal Entendida.......2005-07-13

5 out of 5 stars An interesting experimental album.......2005-05-06

In 1999 Café Tacvba released this double album entitled `Reves/Yo soY' (both were also sold separately) Again, the graphic design is very unusual but compelling at the same time, the double cd edition didn't have any bonus at all but the two cd's in a carton box with a very suggestive design on it.

The idea behind this double album seemed interesting but odd at the same time: `Yo soy' would include 52 new tracks (they are actually 15, but two of them are divided into many) from the band and `Reves' would include 12 instrumental themes original from the band and performed by themselves and other artists, such as Kronos Quartet, Arghul and Compañia Nacional de Danza Folklorica.

Yo soY

This album is different from its antecessors, we listen to a more mature and calm band, the vocal style of Nru has obviously improved from last album (listen to `El rio' and you will know what I'm talking about) and the mature ness of the band is present in the entire album. This album may not contain their most famous pieces but I believe what happened is that a lot of people got so caught with `Re' that they were expecting something similar.

Songs like `El rio', `El polen' (sung again by Emmanuel) are pieces that didn't transcend as much as `La locomotora' for example, but that are very interesting pieces, the piano and the vocals in `El polen' are something like never before shown in their albums, `Bicicleta' is another very interesting piece from this disc.

Reves

Among all the Café Tacvba albums this is the one I find the most experimental. It contains 9 instrumental songs performed by the band in a variety of styles that are hard to define. One of the highlights of these is track 9, that would later be entitled `Reves'.

The most interesting pieces from this album are tracks 7, 8 and 10. `10' is a musical piece made with the sound of people dancing, what you actually listen to is people stomping their feet on the ground directed by Nieves Paniagua, this track gives you a sense of emptiness on the performance but it definitely is one of a kind song. `5.1' performed by `Arghul' is a classical type piece performed with `clarinetes'. The last piece is `M.C.' performed by none other that the `Kronos Quartet', this song is just beautifully played and well executed.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable album for any Café Tacvba fan interested in the evolution of the band and not in having another `Re'. It shows an evolution and mature ness, but it is not definitely the ideal album if you are going to listen to them for the first time, you had better buy their first two albums, enjoy them, understand them and then listen to how they evolved in these two interesting pieces that are `Reves/Yo soY'

These guys are re-inventing music!! It is such a refreshing CD!! 5 out of 5 stars The Best of Cafe Tacuba.......2005-09-12

A really good mexican rock band, who has been able to mix the sounds of the rock music with the folklore music from Mexico is just pure bliss achieved by only Cafe Tacuba.

In celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the Unplugged, they re-realesed the cd along with a dvd.

Every song is good, you wont be disapponted with it, it's the best of the best

5 out of 5 stars Chiderrimísimo!.......2005-08-31

Yo creo que este CD y DVD no necesita más publicidad, quien quiera que haya visto el Cafe Tacvba MTV unplugged lo compra y listo. Si no lo viste, pos te lo recomiendo muchísimo. For those who do not speak Spanish, just buy it, it is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars What We've Been Waiting For.......2005-07-23

This is without a doubt a must have for any Cafe Tacuba fan. The bands energy and cameraderie is infectious. The "unplugged" arrangements of the songs are nothing but amazing. Living in the US, I'd never been able to see the Unplugged, but had heard bootleg copies of a few of the songs. This is a musical treat that I can watch over and over. Ruben Albarran is in top form, with his trademark voice, gravelling his way through tunes like "La Ingrata". Then, he turns around a sings a song like "Esa Noche" in voice so pure and beautiful it can break your heart. Just a top notch performance. If you think you won't like it because the lyrics are in Spanish.. this is your chance to open your mind to something a little different. I promise you, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best `onplog' ever!.......2005-07-11

The year was 1996 just after releasing their second album, `Re' (considered by many as his best album so far). Mtv invited Café Tacvba to perform in the popular series of MTV `unplugged'

The CD

The band was in what I personally think his best moment, the moment in which they transitioned and started to experiment with new sounds and music for their second album. This unplugged opens with the very first two tracks from `Re', `El aparato' and `La ingrata' in acoustic versions that resemble the originals. The good stuff starts in track 3 with the acoustic version of `El metro', Emmanuel is just unbelievable playing the piano in this one, Quique Rangel on the bass gives to this version a unique sound.

The band's producer, Gustavo Santaolalla makes a special appearance as a guest in a couple of songs, `Esa noche' and `El baile y el salon', being the latest the best song from the album, the arrangement they made with the violin (Luis Antonio Franco) gives this song the sense of loneliness the lyrics talk about.

Also, an historical moment for the band is here, the first time they sang `Las flores' with the guapango arrangement Alejandro Flores did, Cosme and Alejandro battling over the lyrics for the first time ever on a live performance are unbelievable and resembling of the old Mexican movies in which Pedro Infante did the same with his co-protagonists.

This edition also includes `Una mañana' (originally sung by Jose Jose), way before recording their studio version for the CD tribute to Jose Jose, this version was not aired when the unplugged came out for the first time, so finally having the unplugged on DVD and having an extra song never released before make this item even more collectible for a fan of the band.

The mixing sound of the album is pretty good, all the instruments sound clear and no aging can be perceived on the recording (considering this was recorded almost 10 years ago)

The DVD

This is basically the video version of the audio CD, but more complete, there are some dialogues between songs here that are not present on the CD. Seeing Cosme showing off his breasts is definitely one of the funniest things of this DVD.

No more extras than the announced documentary can be found on the DVD. The unplugged by itself is enough reason to buy it as the piece of history this document represents for Mexican rock and roll. The documentary shows a little `behind the scenes' and rehearsal from 10 years ago and then takes you to present day to Café Tacvba's recording studio were they host a reunion with the musicians involved in the unplugged in 1996. it is fun to see them all together telling anecdotes as they watch the unplugged together, the only person not present in the reunion is Santaolalla, who makes a `special' appearance at the end that was completely unnecessary and could have not been there.

The image quality is not so good overall; but on the other hand, the 5.1 mixing sound is superb (stereo option is obviously included).

Both items are sold separately and on a special edition that included CD+DVD, I definitely recommend the latter, the price difference is not that large and both discs are worth having better together. The design and presentation of the album is also very interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Que pena!!.......2005-06-29

5 out of 5 stars A promising band.......2005-05-06

It was the year of 1992 and the rock scene in Mexico was swarming with new bands, each one with a different style and proposal. One of those bands was Café Tacvba, named after a coffee shop in Mexico city, today (13 years later) they are still one of the few good Mexican rock bands.

This debut album with a variety of themes in the lyrics and with a very `mexican' style in its music, showed what seemed to be a very promising band. The vocal style that Sizu Yantra has (that's the most recent name that the vocalist has adopted, another peculiarity about the band) is quite different to what you expect from a vocalist, in time you get used to it and you actually get to like it, his style has evolved and improved ever since. `Las batallas' and `Maria' are a couple of ballads in which you can easily see the richness of their music and lyrics, and, on the other hand, we have `Las persianas' and `Rarotonga', two songs that are totally different in style and ideas, ideas that were fresh then and still are today (the `Rarotonga' video was definitely a keeper)

Even though the songs mentioned above were the singles released, my favorite tracks are the less known songs, `El catrin', `Labios jaguar' and `La zonaja' are songs in which you enjoy the music, but not as much as the lyrics, and this is mostly because Café Tacvba talks about the Mexican culture in their albums, in `El catrin' we hear the story of a guy that seems to have gotten out from a lottery card, `Labios jaguar' deals with a guy involved in relationship with a French type girl while he analyzes the advantages of being with a `trajin princesa' instead.

Bottomline, a very interesting proposal and a very enjoyable album to listen to, regardless of the other albums they have released ever since, `Café Tacvba' remains as one of my personal favorites, fresh ideas and a different proposal in this album made of Café Tacvba what they are today: one of the greatest Latin-American rock bands.

4 out of 5 stars tomando café.......2004-10-31

this band from méxico is amazing. their first album is an epilogue of unexpected music to come from café tacvba. a very good album in its own respect, talking about, most likely, experiences of the past ("las batallas", "la zonaja"), and the area in which they live ("el catrin"). Also just going out of line with songs like "las persianas" about a lover killing the beloved, but ironically with an upbeat rhythm. though the album is great two tracks ("rarotonga", "cometer suicidio") keep this album from getting a five-star. not bad songs but ones that are "tired out" once they are heard at least four or five times. Anyone who wants to hear something different or just want to hear some good music from méxico are recommended to buy this album. the album is filled with upbeat songs, an occasional slow song here and there, and just plain good music all the way. those who are way too focused on mainstream need not apply.

4 out of 5 stars Maria , Maria.......2001-02-16

Wow! Cafe Tacuba is a 4 piece band with great talent! This First album is gorgeously made. The most powerful song on the album is Maria, this song will remind all of us of the beauitful feeling of being in love! It sounds as if he is singing Marjorie, Marjorie but he is not he is singing Maria, Maria. Cafe Tacuba will always be around and if I had to start with one album this will be the one. Go ahead and order it through Amazon and you will not be disappointed. bye.

5 out of 5 stars "Coolisimo".......1999-12-23

This album left me in shock. I honestly did not think I would get so attached to one group. Before I never would have pictured myself listening to this type of music, but with one listen of this band opened my ears to another level of music. Trust me, you wont be disappointed if you buy this album, it ROCKS!

4 out of 5 stars A quite enjoyable surprise.......2005-05-06

I have never been a fan of cover albums, and I must say that in 1996 when I heard that Café Tacvba's next album would be full of covers, I was quite disappointed. Especially when a couple of years ago this same band criticized other bands for doing covers, now they were releasing an album full of those!

I am not sure but I believe that for this album the vocalist changed his name to `Anonimo', the album includes covers from Flans (an 80's pop band), Botellita de Jerez (another mexican rock band) and Leo Dan among others. It has only 8 tracks, but the eight of them are quite enjoyable.

Even though the songs were not new, what I never considered was that they changed the original music to the Café Tacvba style, which is totally unpredictable. Their version of `Chilanga Banda' made me buy this album, very different from the original, you basically know is the same song because of the title and the lyrics, everything else is totally café Tacvba. Their rendition of `No controles' was another pleasant surprise, especially when I never liked Flans, there's also an instrumental version of `Perfidia' which is one of my favorites, but the song that is really worth of mentioning is `Ojala que llueva café' (original by Juan Luis Guerra), the arrangement they made I promise you no one saw it coming, the last part of the song is now a classic thing an cheered in every concert they give.

If you can buy the special edition they released I would recommend it, it is a carton paper case with a very interesting work of design (as most of their albums)

Maybe not their best album, but a very rare and interesting piece of music that should be a guide to other bands on how to do a cover song, the only thing you need to do is adapt it to your style to make it different from the original and unique, and that's what Café Tacvba did in this album.

4 out of 5 stars "No Manches Dice La Changa".......2005-04-24

I usually stay away from cover albums, but this one isn't like all the others. "No Controles" sounds nothing like the original version and it features David Byrne (Talking Heads) siging backing vocals. "Chilanga Banda" is hilarious and "Como Te Extrano Mi Amor" reminds me of my childhood. I think my parents used to listen to the original version a lot. All the other songs are great too, but I usually skip the instrumental. I wouldn't recommend this album to newcomers though. The best of album or Re would be the best places to start. After that you'll end up wanting everything by Cafe Tacuba.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinaria producción.......2003-05-17

5 out of 5 stars Cool covers.......2002-02-27

Cafe tacuba is one of the most interesting bands along with aterciepolados on the modern rock en español scene. These covers are very cool. Cafe tacubas style is hard to describe, I would say they are a ska rock band mixed with ranchera, industrial, pop, punk....They really have a unique sound. You only get 8 tunes here, but it is still worth it, the cover of "No Controles" absolutly rocks, as does "chilanga Banda" and the instrumental "perfidia" is neat as is "metamorfosis".

If you are sick of the normal "alternative rock" bands on the north american scene, then definitly check out groups like cafe tacuba whom are putting out some refreshing, original work.

3 out of 5 stars Avalancha De Exitos - Cafe Tacuba.......2001-04-01

This is probably one of the best albums as far as cover albums go. They covered a few recent hits such as Botellita de Jerez's Alarmala de Toz, which actually sounds better than the original. They also cover the girl band Flan's No Controles in such a way that you would never imagine a male band to cover. They also bring back the popular classic Como te Extrano by Leo Dan. Overall this has to be a very enjoyable album by one of today's most entertaining and best of the spanish rock bands. Cafe Tacuba Rules.
