If the reggaeton revolution slowed for a second and you're not sure why, consider the comings and goings of Daddy Yankee: Three years have passed since he lit a Latino fire under the non-Latino world with "Gasolina," and despite the best efforts of vast clusters of tough-talking, body-rocking followers, only he, apparently, can keep it stoked. El Cartel: The Big Boss is a 21-track thrill ride destined to restore reggaeton's lost luster. The first few minutes creak--as intros go, "Jefe" is on the longwinded side--but from there it's a riot of bump-bumps, nemesis-bashing, and quick-tongued braggadocio. All credit to DY for again climbing atop a swirling mass of beats and remembering to swagger appealingly on the way up, but the small army of producers and friends who line up to pay the big boss respects on this disc also deserve their props: Fergie makes an impact on the Scott Storch-produced "Impacto" without forcing it in an overly mainstream direction, "Papi Lover" with Pussycat Doll Nicole Sherzinger busts out a cool bhangra-ragga vibe, and Will.i.am winds up "Plane to PR," a slight but contagious ode to Caribbean senoritas, tight. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
THE KING OF REGGAETON, DADDY YANKEE, returns with his new album "El Cartel: The Big Boss". After international platinum success with his first 4 albums, Daddy Yankee released, "El Barrio Fino", which went PLATINUM in the U.S alone, and solidified himself as the leading pioneer of the reggaeton movement. "El Cartel: The Big Boss" is the follow-up studio album everybody has been waiting 3 years for. Having enlisted super-producers such as will.i.am and Scott Storch, Daddy Yankee more than lives up to the hype and delivers his most multi-dimensional and complete album to date.Customer Reviews:
Crossover to the American Market Gone Wrong.......2007-07-20
Now speaking of the songs in the album... most of the reggaeton songs are good (except the one with Héctor "El Father", because it sounds like the beat was made in a bathroom with a leaking pipe), they are a little different than the songs we're used to... since the dembow(reggaeton beat) has changed.. and it's too similar to hip-hop (most of the album ), with slowed down rythms. I personally hated all of the hip hop songs in the album (since as I stated before, he's a reggaeton artist)since they sound to be directed to the american audience and not his true fans...
I just hope that's his next album goes back to his real roots... and that in his songs... he stops mentioning that he's awesome

Customer Reviews:
This album is just perfect a true Reggaeton Album.......2007-07-20
1- Zun Dada: Just awesome... it presents a wacky beat that is just perfectly made to blend with Zion's voice, it's a romantic song that mixes strings hi-hats and reggaeton 9/10
2- Abre La Puerta ... I don't really like that song it's just boring and it says the same thing over and over again 4/10
3- The Way She Moves... It's a good song that features Akon (he's everywhere :P), which presents a luring beat... but tends to be repetitive as well 7/10
4- Amor de Pobre... I just love this song... I think it's the best song of this entire album... it features Eddie Dee, and mixes reggaeton with vallenato in a perfect way.. that tells us about his willing to please his love even though he's poor 10/10
5-Oh Mami.... Yuck... i just hate it.. it's boring and it's like a 3 min+ whining by zion 1/10
6- Hagamos El Amor... Plain old boring... with a really really slow beat and dumb lyrics 2/10
7- Besame... Boring... the bases of this song are 3 words... 3/10
8-Your Body... Good duet featuring De la Ghetto (weird name).. which even though it has repetitive lyrics (her body is on fire), presents a cool beat that is original 7/10
9- Te Vas... It's a really slow song (nothing new... just a semi ballad that is just bad) 2/10
10- Cuarto Nivel..... It's a level of nothingness unknown for humans.. this song talks about how they're above everything and do things differently... 2/10
11- Money... a typical hip-hop with an r&b mix that talks about his richness.. and that people want to shine with him... 1/10
12- La Neta... I've never understood this song... it talks about something that's the end... but it mixes love... and weird lyrics about how cool the song is... but I really like the cumbia beat so... 8/10
13-Amor... A slow song that presents really good lyrics by Zion that tells us about what would he do with his loved one... 8/10
14- Periodico de Ayer... Weird song that presents us about how Zion dealt with the pain caused by his ex... 3/10
15-Fantasma... A cool song that tells us about Zion's misfortune with love... and that his girlfriend always worries him by coming and going, without telling him.... 7/10
Well at the end of the review I can say that Zion is one of the best romantic based reggaeton singers out there... that makes people know that reggaeton isn't just about being rich and cool and famous... and he presents us lyrics that we can all relate to.

Finally-Remixes That Really Make Sense.......2007-05-23
Motown Remixed Vol. 2: 'Latin' Mixes.......2007-05-23
Highlights:
'Shotgun' really benefits from the Latin treatment, which smoothly integrates the sax and organ of the original with a Latin steel drum beat. The addition of the Latin flavor to the Motown sound also works well for 'Dancing Machine'. The new mix really swings with an added brass arrangement. The best parts of the song (Michael's first verses, the instrumental breakdown) are drawn out and repeated (the instrumental breakdown has a really Latin flavor, who knew?) and the instrumental build-up behind Jermaine's lines is an excellent touch. The Andres Levin mix of 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' is the crowning glory of the album. Marvin's vocals are front and center, as they should be, and they are perfectly complemented by the mix, which features a piano track. It's absolute alchemy! It reminds me of the genius of a Freemasons remix. Another solid track is the mix of the Spanish-language version of 'Being With You'. The trademark saxophone of the original is omitted, but Smokey's always-brilliant vocals are placed over layers of bongos and strings, creating a slightly more (just slightly, though) uptempo sound than the original.
Lowlights:
The 'The Boss' mix is dreadful...the mix strips the original instrumentation and is very salsa/tango music with a hint of reggae, which is fine, but paired with Diana's vocals all the drama of the song is zapped. And if you've heard 'The Boss,' it is ALL ABOUT the drama. All that is lost in this mix, unfortunately. There's something about the key of the original vocals and the key of new mix that doesn't match well at all. Not to mention that her vocals are too muddled. A bit of a disaster. Both the David Elizondo mixes (of 'Heat Wave' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone') have a reggae sound as well, and I'm not a huge fan of reggae so naturally I'm a bit predisposed against them. It works much better for 'Heat Wave,' but neither track is one I plan on listening to again.
In the middle:
The SPK mix of 'I Want You Back' is very subtle, to the point where I might have to take a minute before realizing it's a mix. If I want to hear the original, I've already got it. The mix of 'I Can't Get Next To You' is subtle but slightly less so...it attempts to add drama with an extra drumbeat and a rock guitar sound, and the breakdown is mixed. But the original already had drama with the frantic passing around of the vocals, and the original beat complemented it perfectly. This mix seems to be a bit overkill. The 'Square Biz' mix is very calypso flavored and fun, but Teena Marie's vocals are slightly overpowered by the instrumental track. And the original 'Don't Look Any Further' has a bit of a Latin/reggae feel, which ironically is stripped a bit for the new mix. A folky-Latin guitar arrangement is added, and it has a bit more of a downtempo sound. I prefer the original but this version is quality (it would have been much more fitting on the first Motown Remixed album).
So, 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4) for a solid remix album. Regarding the series in general, I do wish that instead of themes, the Motown Remixed series would focus on compiling the best Motown remixes out there, regardless of style. And I wish the series would come out more often than once every two years! Remixes of Motown tracks are constantly hitting the clubs, so there's no shortage of material.

This soundtrack serves up a collision of musical styles, as if the coolest radio stations of Tokyo and New York had suddenly melded into a giant hybrid. The Teriyaki Boyz' opening title track is typical: brilliant production by the Neptunes, East-meets-West mood, more hipness than you can shake a stick at. The Japanese hip-hop group's other offering here, "Cho Large," isn't quite as good but fortunately it's the rare lame-ish track on a CD that overall keeps things on overdrive. Highlights include DJ Shadow's collaboration with Mos Def, "Six Days (Remix)"; Japanese girl surf experts 5.6.7.8's (already familiar to Kill Bill fans) and their uproarious "The Barracuda"; Evil Nine's "Restless," which has the kind of monstrous bass line the Chemical Brothers would kill for; and Atari Teenage Riot's awesome display of digital-hardcore aggro, "Speed" (have these guys ever been used in Dance Dance Revolution?). Even a reggaeton track like Don Omar's "Conteo" somehow fits in this universe, fueled as much by gasoline as by testosterone. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Residente o Visitante arrives less than two years after Calle 13 busted out of reggaeton's oft-repetitive confines with its searing debut disc. But instead of playing it safe, the dynamic duo of Rene Perez and Eduardo Cabra fly further outside the safe zone. Residente o Visitante is dirtier and more diverse than its predecessor, typified by the jaw-dropping intro. It's a solemn chorus of voices simply repeating Spanish expletives. From there, the disc explores political struggle, carnal desire, and the trappings of fame--all anchored by Calle 13's razor-sharp sense of humor. Tango, lounge grooves, and cumbia rhythms collide with reggaeton in ways that shouldn't work, but do so wonderfully. The standout track "Mala Suerte Con el 13" is a dysfunctional duet with Mala Rodriguez that turns love-song cliches upside down--and slaps them on the behind. You'll need to take a shower after the first listen--and immediately put it on repeat. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:
Excesivo.......2007-06-18
Best release of the year...English or Spanish........2007-06-05
Visitante's beats are really something else, well executed and extremely original. You have to be dead, in order to keep still while listening. Residente's lyrics are brutally honest and funny, there's nothing that escapes his imagination, a total mushroom trip.
Standout songs, even though you won't skip any of them, are :
"La Era De la Copiaera" I don't know who his lashing out at but it's beautifully hilarious.
"Me Voy pal Norte" Featuring Orishas, a harmonious union, between the two best talents, in the spanish speaking, urban music scene right now. Socially Conscious once again.
"Cumbia de los Aburridos" and "Uiyi Guaye" these are simply funny and great to dance to.
Don't miss this album...it'll be like missing your birthday.

Give Daddy Yankee some credit for making Barrio Fino En Directo more than just a slapdash cash-in on his widepsread appeal. Fans will surely be appeased by this lush collection as they await the reggaeton superstar's proper follow-up to 2004's double-platinum Barrio Fino disc. The En Directo CD/DVD package isn't really a formal live disc, and it isn't a standard hits collection. Rather, it's a clever hybrid of past chart-toppers, in-concert moments, solid new tunes and slick documentary footage. The CD features energetic versions of "Corazones," "Lo Que Paso, Paso" and the ubiquitous "Gasolina" recorded at different stops throughout Daddy Yankee's monstrous live tour. There are also five new tracks, including the fist-pumping "Rompe" and collaborations with Snoop Dogg (the tongue-tripping "Gangsta Zone") and Houston-based rapper Paul Wall (slinky standout track "Machete Reloaded"). The new tracks further highlight Daddy Yankee's effortless medling of urban Latino rhythms and U.S. hip-hop beats. The accompanying DVD is stuffed with interesting moments, including a few live performances, a video for the socially conscious "Corazones," and a Q&A session featuring Daddy Yankee's takes on fame, family, retirement and rival Don Omar. There's also a trailer for the Spanish-language film "Talento de Barrio," which aspires to be DY's own version of Eminem's acclaimed "8 Mile" sprinkled with some of John Singleton's "Boys N the Hood." Given Daddy Yankee's track record thus far, expect to see it burning up the big screen very soon. --Joey GuerraAlbum Description
Barrio Fino En Directo is a CD/DVD packed with exciting new collaborations, behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive interviews, and live performances that reaffirm Yankee's title as the undisputed King of Reggaeton. The eagerly anticipated 16-song collection includes live renditions of hits like "Lo Que Paso, Paso," "Corazones," and the international phenomenon "Gasolina," as well as five new tracks produced by musical masterminds DJ Urba & Monserrate and rising star Sammy Fisher, among others. The first single, "Rompe," is quickly taking the airwaves by storm, beginning to tally up radio spins. The four other new songs on the album include "Gangsta Zone," featuring Hip-Hop icon Snoop Dogg; a remix of the club anthem "Machete" featuring Houston's latest sensation, Paul Wall; and the infectious "Machucando" and "El Truco". The Barrio Fino En Directo DVD, directed by Carlos Perez, includes over sixty minutes of never-before-seen footage. Viewers can enjoy Yankee's energetic performance at his sold-out concert in Puerto Rico's Coliseo de Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot and also follow the artist around the globe during his extensive world tour. Other DVD features include an in-depth interview with the reggaeton pioneer, a music video for the song "Corazones," and extensive behind-the-scenes footage that will shed new light on Yankee's charismatic personality, rigorous schedule, dedicated work ethic and unique creative process.Customer Reviews:

The music of Puerto Rican outfit Calle 13 simmers like so much sweat on the backs of b-boys and fly girls, twisting and turning its way through the cracks and crevices of modern urban music. Calle 13's dynamic duo--half-brothers Rene Perez and Eduardo Cabra--are smart, shocking, and silly. It's a thrilling combination that makes for some hip-swiveling, head-turning sounds. Standout tracks "La Hormiga Brava," "Vamo Animal," and the rocket-fueled single "Atrévete-te-te" careen between street sounds and lush Latin rhythms, anchored by the group's mischievous sense of humor. Reggaeton is the label that's been slapped on this inspired hybrid, but Calle 13 is light years beyond that often stifling genre (which explains recent collaborations with Nelly Furtado and Alejandro Sanz). Latin rap riffs, new-wave keyboards, and a sprinkling of pop smarts chart a musical path (and crash together during "Sin Coro") that Calle 13 will likely lead--and veer from--in the near future. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

damn good cd.......2007-04-20
just listening to the sets of syllables that are tied together, along with great breath control, not to mention a pretty melodic voice for a rapper (without being annoying), it's obvious that he's got some talent on the mic. add to that the fact that every one of the beats are straight slappers, and you've got yourself one hell of an album to rock out to, at the house with some bottles, or smashing down some backroads. i'm a white guy into clever, witty and lyrically complex hip-hop, so i wonder how much more hate i could get for jumping on this "reggaeton" deal, but i would mos def (not the rapper) pump this at a club, house party or just smashing on the road.
bottom line, if his lyrics are actually as sick over the killer beats as they sound, you should add another star to this review.
the puffy skit is great too. stop the watered down pop-rap!

The self-aggrandizing title and cover art may indicate otherwise, but Don Omar's King of Kings isn't your average reggaeton mash-up. Most genre stars (Daddy Yankee, Voltio, Wisin & Yandel) diffuse their heady personas with weak vocals, insipid lyrics, and repetitive arrangements. Omar, however, is an entirely different animal. King of Kings is a dark, adventurous journey through reggaeton, supplemented by surprising rhythms and a careful selection of collaborators. Hip-hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari adds urban elegance to "Intro-Predica," and Juelz Santana brings a genuine grit to "Conteo." King of Kings also finds Omar experimenting with creative variations on the reggaeton sound. "Ojitos Chiquitos" benefits from a moody Middle Eastern vibe, and "Cuentale" soars via a start-stop salsa hybrid. Omar slows things down during "Tu No Sabes," a piano-driven tale of heartbreak; and "Candela" incorporates reggaeton beats into a searing rock arrangement. Omar's former life as a preacher has obviously influenced his lyrics (which touch on religion, love, and life's hardships), but it's also given him a heady, passionate approach to music. There are lighter moments of standard reggaeton and dance hall, but even those simmer with intensity. Omar's vocals aren't always strong--particularly during the slower moments--but King of Kings stands tall amid so many throwaway reggaeton releases. We'll allow him a few moments of boastful frivolity. --Joey GuerraAlbum Description
King of Kings is building on the impressive foundation set by Don Omar's previous albums, "The Last Don" and "The Last Don Live".King of Kings does feature its share of ballads, like "Muñecas," "Tu No Sabes," "Angelitos," and "Infieles." But that doesn't mean that Don Omar stops rocking out to reggaetón's eductive dance rhythm and Bachata Fixation with hard-driving tracks like "Conteo, "Bailando Sola" and Cuentale get you bumping and dancing across the dance floor. The album also includes collaborations MCs Juelz Santana, Beanie Man, and Zion.
King of Kings parte de la base sólida de "The Last Don" y "The Last Don Live".

I'm sorry - I just dont get it.......2006-09-20
Nothing on this compares to "Dale Don Dale" or "Pobre Diablo".
This just seems like a lot of talent wasted. In this case, "Angelito Vuela" is not the tip of the iceberg - it is the whole iceberg. Buy the song if you like it, but beware.
Recommend: his last album first and then Pa'l Mundo from Wisin & Yandel or Ivy Queen's Flashback.
I have no doubt Don Omar can be the king of Reggaeton once again, but this will set him back a little.
IS GOOOOOOD!!.......2006-09-13
It might not be the best album of the year, but is up there. Top 5, easy!
