Love the constant accordian, and the addition of rappers Daniel Spinetta and Anita Tijoux on a couple of tracks makes this more interesting. The final track, "Sin Documentos", is heartbreaking.

Ms. Venegas uses a variety of styles, from cumbia to Euro disco. From track to track, you get something different.

If you like a CD with a wide range of sound, this is for you! Julieta Venegas has a rich, raspy voice that compliments any musical style. Some songs have a hip-hop feel to them, while others could almost be described as country music. Of course there's a definite Latino vibe throughout... This CD is one you can just put in the player and let it go, without having to hit the skip button.

Julieta Venegas' switch from moody, alt-rock chica to winsome pop star--via 2003's hit-packed Si--may have shocked some fans, but it also shed glorious pop light on an appealing new side of the Mexican singer. She's hardly looked back, and Limon y Sal offers a carefully crafted, dizzylingly diverse balance of both worlds. To be sure, Limon y Sal is soaked in sunny, vibrant melodies, and Venegas' offbeat stylings and charming voice make even the most bitter break-up song worthy of a smile. Kick-off track "Canciones de Amor" is a sun-kissed ode to love's complexities, and first single "Me Voy" rides a nostalgic accordion groove. The luxuriously lazy title track features a galloping groove and easy choruses that are downright Beatles-esque in their poppiness. "Primer Dia" is a questionable moment, with its uneasy mix of synthesized grooves and rap breaks, but for the most part, Limon y Sal offers just the right mix of radio-ready shimmer and rock edges, thanks in part to production work from Coti Sorokin and Cachorro Lopez. It only gets better as you dig deeper: the racing chrouses of "A Donde Sea"; the regional kick of "No Sere"; or the retro club vibe of "Eres Para Mi." Wonderful!!! .......2007-07-15

I've purchased a LOT of music in the past year and Limon y Sal is my favorite of them all. I have Julieta's other CDs and this is her best. There isn't a single song on Limon y Sal that I don't like. Not many albums are good from top to bottom and Julieta shows off her range and charming personality on this CD more than on her others. Julieta has an amazing voice and a slightly quirky quality that I can't explain. This album is good even if you don't understand Spanish. The music holds up on its own. I recommend that fans get the dual disc version, with the behind the scenes footage of the recording process and the Me Voy video. I wish that the DVD side included the videos for Eres Para Mi and, well.....Limon y Sal (Duh!) as those are quite enjoyable videos, but you can't have everything, I guess.

Me Gusta.......2007-04-27

Every time I go to NYC, I make a point to go spend some time- as well as a small fortune- in the Virgin Megastore. While I was in the world music section, this album came on the sound system. I listened to the first song, left to do some shopping elsewhere, and when I came back, this was still on, and it was irresistable. Out of the fifteen-odd albums I bought that day, this was the first one I listened to, and it has so far proven to be the best. I highly recommend it to any enjoyer of well-crafted, melodic pop music. The highest compliment I can pay this album is that the music, without being overly dramatic, makes it so I understand everything she's saying, even though I don't know much Spanish. One of the most purely enjoyable albums I've bought in some time.

Easy listening with a personal touch.......2007-01-27

I've only listened to Aquì and Limon y Sal by Julieta Venegas, but out of those two I definitely prefer this. Julieta's special voice comes to its full right in this album. It is an album with happy Spanish-style pop music, nothing too advanced but more towards the easy listening. Also, if you like the music of La Oreja de Van Gogh I can really recommend this album (and vice versa if you like this album I can recommend the music of LOdVG).

"Limon y Sal" is a great Julieta Venegas album. Her lyrics are so simple and so sincere. My favorite songs from this CD are "Limon y Sal," "No Hace Falta," "Canciones de Amor," and "Sin Documentos." If you liked "Si" you will love this CD! I listen to it all the time. :)

Julieta in surround sound. Cojonudo!.......2006-09-17

I'm a recent fan of Julieta so my first taste of her music was Limon y sal. I've happily gone back through her catalog to savor "Si" (absolutely great pop that channels her Baja CA roots along with Lennon & McCartney via Prince...no easy task!) and her earlier CDs where she was doing more "alternative" flavors. I love it all and admire how she has progressed as an artist with true talent (and beauty) and not just an overly choreographed flavor of the month. That said, I'd like to comment on Juli in surround sound.

I purchased this dual disc a few days ago and just this morning sat down in the 5.1 sweet spot to let her music, well, surround me. Hats off to her and her co-producers. It's tastefully mixed to let Julieta's gorgeous voice take center stage while the guitars, percussion, keyboards (I'm a sucker for her accordeon especially) and backup vocals really seamlessly complement the overall effect. I've got an "old school" set up with Advent speakers (from the late 70s...I've dated myself!) in front and mini Advents behind, by the way. All in all, great. May she produce more splendid music, pop or alternative or wherever her muse may take her. I hear she's become a fan of Estrella Morente...maybe a flamenco-influenced disc with some Kiko Veneno added...hay que esperar...Also, I hope she's made her first million (in response to one sad reviewer stuck in her "alternative" phase...get over it...she's made an artist's choice that's hers alone) and goes on to make whatever she needs to make the choices she wants as a true artist without constraints. She's obviously not in it for the money like so many other "artists".

In perspective these are some of the most popular songs of their time. I enjoy the historical value of songs from the past. Hearing someone sing about things you may have only learned from a history book, makes it more real.

Great forgotten music.......2003-05-20

Just on a whim I bought this recording to see what all the hoopla was about Sal Mineo. What a suprise! With each time listening throught the CD, I found the songs more and more enjoyable. What a rare find. Now i'm looking for all his recordings from all labels.

The sound quality is excellent--including the stereo recordings given the vintage of these sessions. My old 78s of his pale in comparison!!

If you're at all in doubt about this compilation--don't!

Impressive! Well mixed versions of Sal Mineo's music!.......2002-06-02

Not only was Sal Mineo one of the best actors around but he also recorded a smash hit album in 1957 and this release captures all those songs and 2 bonus unreleased tracks that burn up the stereo with Sal's sexy voice and also a very impressive collection of pictures in the cd's book.Sal might not have been the best singer but he still has an incredibly sexy voice and I really enjoy this album.I don't know why it sounds so much better than the previous released versions of these songs but I love the way they sound on this!!!I hope Hollywood follows by releasing more of Sal's movies on video and I am also excited about the new movie about Sal's life starring Thomas Ian Nicholas and directed by Joey Travolta! It seems Sal Mineo's star is on the rise again and he deserves it no questions asked! I highly recomend this cd!!!! 5 stars!!

A TWIST and a PINCH of STEREO!!!.......2002-06-02

I am a huge Sal Mineo fan and collector. I own so many versions of his songs but this cd is by far the best! It's about time Sal Mineo's music was released in excellent stereo sound. It makes such a dramatic difference. These songs were so popular in the late 1950's when Sal Mineo was one of the hottest movie stars on the planet and I am so so so very happy this cd was released!

Wonderful.......2005-09-10

This Milestone CD collects two LPs Nistico recorded in the early 1960s: HEAVYWEIGHTS (Jazzland, 12/20/61) and COMIN' ON UP! (Riverside, 10/17/62). Both LPs were excellent and it's great having them together on one CD. HEAVYWEIGHTS has a slight edge over the Riverside date, mainly because of the excellent version of AU PRIVAVE found there. Nistico definitely was a swinging tenor player and on this handsome material he really shines. Nat Adderley is on cornet and plays with fire and his usual sure touch. COMIN' is just as swinging as the previous date and finds the obscure trumpet man Sal Amico joining Nistico. Previous to these recordings Nistico was best known as a member of Woody Herman's band; he died in Switzerland in 1991, aged 50. These are two solid mainstream modern recordings that easily could have gotten lost in the seemingly whimsical reissue game. Thank you, Milestone. (Because of time restrictions, "Just Friends" on the HEAVYWEIGHTS date had to be left off.)

Dreadful, sonically..........2006-03-06

The sound quality of this collection detracts from the performances of the tracks. It's not that they're mono (which can sound good, with care in remastering), but the tracks are muddy and lacking in both the high and low ends. Sad that even though Sal wasn't the greatest singer, he had charisma, and these poorly mastered tracks elminate even that. This sounds like these tracks were mastered on the fly because they weren't officially liscensed. I don't recommend this collection -- your money would be much better spent purchasing the other collection of Sal's tracks.

Disappointing.......2002-11-21

I bought this cd, prior to the track listing becoming available. I was hoping that it would contain the songs he recorded for other labels other than epic. IT did not. And the sound quality on the other available cd is much better, plus the other has more songs. Get Complete Epic recordings, not this one.

Scottish soul-rock singer Maggie Bell first gained prominence singing with Stone the Crows, which released its first album in 1970 and broke up in June 1973. Bell went solo with Queen of the Night in 1974, followed by Suicide Sal. Angel Air. 2006.
