Pafuera Telaranas, the debut disc from Spanish singer Bebe, spins a hypnotic web of alternately moody and joyous pop treats. The album doesn't immediately catch fire after initial listens, but Bebe's playful delivery and thoughtful lyrics ultimaltey shine through. They make Pafuera Telaranas an enjoyable alternative to so many of Latin pop's kewpie-doll cuties. The album flirts with ska rhythms ("Ska de la Tierra"), hushed balladry (the mournful "Cuidandote") and experimental a capella interludes ("Razones"). Bebe's chirpy vocals anchor each song, a mix of Juleta Venegas' weary sensuality and Gwen Stefani's streetwise sweetness. Bebe even seems to channel Ashlee Simpson's raspy rock flavor during "Con Mis Manos"--although the acclaimed singer would likely frown on the comparison. "Malo," a harrowing, flamenco-flavored tale of domestic abuse, is the album's emotional centerpoint. It builds to an impressive climax. Equally enjoyable, but alternately joyous, is "Siete Horas," a wistful countdown to a lovers' meeting stuffed with DJ scratches and rapid-fire vocal tricks. Bebe proves adept at adapting herself to diverse themes and styles, and it makes Pafuera Telaranas an inspired pop treat. --Joey Guerra

bebe definetly has a unique sound. I only understand a little bit of what she is saying but I still like to listen to it. The spanish is a little different because she is from Spain

bebe has a wonderful childish voice that I find very attractive.
the lyrics need some revising, for some are simply silly, and not the silly that can be fun, but the silly that is plain dumb.
nevertheless, it is still worth buying the cd

Este Cd es espectacular. Supe de Bebe por una canción ("Me quedará") que está en un CD de la cadena Putumayo. No pude resistir la tentación de comprarlo pensando que si todo el CD era como esa canción, sería un éxito y así fue. Excelente!

This Album is Simply Brilliant!! Muy .......2007-01-28

I've had this album for only a few days, have listened to it end to end maybe three times.. and all I can say, is that it's completely freakin' brilliant. Gypsy alternative folk rock, gently patinated with punk & flamenco. Singer-songwriter dance-pop. Simply sublime.

Dug up some bio info that'll I share (save you the google): Bebe- aka Nieves Rebolledo Vila - was born in Valencia Spain in 1978. Her parents are members of the Extremaduran folk group Surberina. So she grew up surrounded by music & musicians, and got into the music scene in Madrid as a teen. This is her first big album, though, and it's made her a star in the Latin music scene. She was nominated for five Latin Emmies for this, and the aforemention Malo was a huge international hit single.

She sounds a lot like Natalia LaFourcade (but with rather better pop hooks,) with Julieta Venegas' hipness.. Her lyrics and themes can be edgy and political. 'Malo,' her big hit (though not, by my lights, the best song on this album) is a bit of a bruiser.

And as for those titillating forbidden lyrics, they're all en Espanol folks, in keeping with the themes rather than gratuitous (at least to my sensiblities.) Put it this way: this isn't Too Live Kru or Muttly Crew or anything untarded & paleoanderthal like that. If you can handle, say, Alanis Morissette, this material won't annoy you.

But no mind.. this girl is class, she's tart & smart, a tad saucy bout the edges.

Summation: Lo Quiero Mucho. Dig it lots, and this is just the beginning. This is in the near vicinity of Simon & Garfunkel or James Taylor good. (In all seriousness, she's in that good: classic, catchy pop; interesting themes; musically thematically complex & varied, with good lyrics..) It will probably take at least a decade and a half of constant pummeling before I get sick of it. I look forward to the mauling.

Buy it. Pronto. Cinquo estrellas +++.

Authentic, Poetic and Colorful.......2007-01-10

I never received my order of this CD.
I have heard 3 songs only, which captured my attention.
If your someone who likes latin music or other earthly
exotic sounds this is a great collection to have!.

I hope that maybe you can check my order to see
if it can get here!.

Caused a stir.......2007-03-23

I was sitting at a cafe in Buenos Aires when this CD suddenly started playing. Within two songs there were several patrons, including myself, asking the waitresses who was that playing. There were so many in fact that one simply brought out the CD cover and we started passing it around, copying the title. Needless to say, the girls played the whole thing while everyone happily tapped their fingers and drank their beers. Excellent!

A Woman of Diversity.......2005-09-06

I first heard 'Malo' when in South America and was hooked immediately. Bebe's lyrics are beautifully multi-faceted- for example in 'Malo', her song about spousal abuse, she sings "please, don't shout, the children are sleeping." A line which i'm sure many arguing couples have said which brings the subject that much closer to home. Pleasingly, she follows this submission by a foot-stomping, razor-sharp chorus which is a testimony to women's strength- "You don't do this to people you love... Don't think you're better than women". The album is dedicated to women who have been victims of abuse.
A major thing that stands out for me is Bebe's distinctive voice. Her accent is unashamedly Spanish and she has a delicious way of missing off her 'S's- making 'Mis Manos' sound like 'Mi Mano'- trust me, it sounds gorgeous, and her voice on the whole is incredibly impressive. She shows off her strength and range of voice to good avail on the melting-pot of songs on the album. Some may be put off having such a contrasting bunch on one album but Bebe pulls ot off with great panache and flair, comfortable slipping into whichever genre she chooses- and there are many- ska, soul, rock, rap, pop, and even a haunting acappella to finish the album off. Multifarious as it is, each song bears Bebe's already unmistakeable stamp. I can only hope to hear the same in her next album.

Laura Pausini with an attitude....buy this cd!.......2005-06-02

You won't be disappointed with this cd. I've described it as Laura Pausini with an attitude. The songs (all in Spanish) are excellently crafted, the lyrics are powerful and full of social issues, and Bebe exudes a sensuality that rises above all stereotypes of "feminine sexuality" that so dominate most US music today. The music is very interesting, with complex rhythms and instruments woven into very groovy tunes. Don't let the CD's "faux-Duran Duran" cover scare you off...Bebe is definitely an artist of the 21st century, uniquely Spanish, and fun.

Best Spanish CD of the year.......2005-02-08

This is a fantastic CD - well worth a listen for everyone whether or not you speak Spanish. Bebe's voice is enchanting but her lyrics are fierce, especially when dealing with social issues in Spain, like wife-beating. Her music is the perfect mix of traditional Spanish guitar with more modern sounds.

This is one of the best CDs I own. I listen to it so much, I'm afraid I'll burn a hole in the CD. Excellent for women in their 20s. Good soft beats and harsher rock. Enjoy!
