Much like their brethren Mercy Me, Casting Crowns was thrust into the limelight from a worship band beginning. With steady chops honed from hundreds of shows/services a year and a simple, straight-ahead rock style, the Florida-based band found themselves on top of the charts thanks to the success of massive singles "Who Am I?" and "The Voice of Truth" from its self-titled debut (2003). Lifesong is a sensible sophomore follow-up that shows the band expanding its musical creativity while lyrically remaining true to the cause. There's a common thread of humility throughout as front man Mark Hall sings of the disenfranchised ("Does Anybody Hear Her"), the heartbroken ("Praise You in This Storm"), and the remorseful ("Prodigal"). Hall even calls outside for songwriting help from the brilliant Nichole Nordeman in "Stained Glass Masquerade," a cautionary warning about church hypocrisy in the face of keeping it real. The radio-friendly, U2- ish "Lifesong" proves a savvy book-end to the penitent closer "And Now My Lifesong Sings." Both evoke strong messages that worship is all about how one lives a life and not what kind of songs they may sing. The first three songs are wonderful, especially "Praise You in This Storm" with its awesome message that God is worthy of worship REGARDLESS. He is worthy because of who He is; storms don't change that any more than good times could increase that. He is GOD.

Some of the other songs weren't at that top level. But it's worth buying for those songs.

This is SUCH an amazing piece of work. It really is such a great product.
The songs make you think and have an underlying meaning. Like in "Stained Glass Masquerade" can apply to real life itself. "Praise You is this Storm" is my all time favorite. Its is inspirational and true to the core we must praise Christ even in the storm. "Prodigal" reminds me of each time I mess up big time and come back to God for forgiveness and Guidance. "Set Me Free" is powerful and "While you Were Sleeping" has a good underlying meaning to me of the blindess to Christ and Sleeping religously that I used to be in before I got saved. Really a wonderful album and I'm looking forward to the next one!

I got lifesong after I heard a friend recommend the band to me. I liked it at first, but now that I have heard their first cd I like it even more. Their songs can be depressing, but it's so true like in the song "can anybody hear her?" it's true christians shouldn't ignore a cry for help when they hear it.

This is the first album of Christian music I have ever owned that has achieved that awesome balance between spirituality and talent. So many Christian bands fall too far on one side of the scale, but Casting Crowns has hit it right on the mark! A great CD.

The first five tracks are challenging and thought-provoking original songs. The remaining four are wonderful covers of some well-known praises.

When I heard this I sang practically every song. All the songs are beautifully written. "Voice of Truth," is so beautiful it gives me goosebumps. every song is easy to relate to like "If We Are The Body," it's a good song and speaks the truth, that as Christians we should act in a certain way. As I sit here and try to write this review, I can't think of the right words to say--this CD is just so good that I'm not surprised at all that it was RIAA-certified multi-platinum. With outstanding lyrics, Casting Crowns' mega-hit debut easily deserves 5 stars.
This group really does deserve all the hype and awards that it's getting--after all, they are the first Christian artist in HISTORY to have that artist's first three albums to be RIAA-certified gold or platinum. (I'm including the LIVE Concert release, which also was certified gold).
This truly amazing album includes the hits "What If His People Prayed", a song with a tremendous message, "If We Are The Body", a song to the church, "Who Am I", "Voice Of Truth", and "American Dream". This album's fabulous lyrics and producing reflect the songwriting talents of lead-singer Mark Hall and the producing talents of Steven Curtis Chapman. Definitely a perfect gift for someone who enjoys Christian music, because these guys obviously know what they're doing. The best debut I've heard in a while, and the best overall album since Dove Award winning, GRAMMY-winning hit-maker group Avalon's 2001 gold release, "Oxygen" (which is also HIGHLY recommended!!)
Other songs include: "Here We Go Again", "Your Love Is Extravagant", and more.
Overall, excellent job in every aspect--you will definitely be pleased if you purchase this album!!!:)

A Battle Not to Fight.......2007-05-13

Brandon Heath's "Don't Get Comfortable" is a bubbly mix of positive music. Many tracks are overtly Christian. The opener "Steady Now" is one of the best tracks with catchy hooks and Brandon's boy-band friendly vocals, "We don't have to wait until the end of the night just to say that something's wrong & maybe nobody's right; We're all victims in a battle we never had to fight." The other shining star is the title track with its driving beat and Brandon's convincing vocals, "You don't have to be afraid even if you make mistakes; You know that I'll remain." Other tracks like the closer "I Will Lay You Down" & "You Decide" are also good. Most of this CD is excellent, well worth seeking out. Enjoy!

An impressive thread of praise and worship runs through the career of Michael W. Smith. After all, he's penned two of today's finest modern praise songs ("Great Is the Lord" and "Agnus Dei"), and he was the creative genius behind Exodus, a brilliant collection of worship material. Yet that same artistic spirit seems sadly lacking on Worship, Smith's first solely praise and worship release. All parts are assembled, with Smith on vocals and keyboards, and an all-star choir of Amy Grant, Phillips, Craig & Dean, Chris Rice, Cindy Morgan, and others backing him on this live release. But outside of a few selected tracks ("Let It Rain" and "Draw Me Close"), Worship falls flat. Smith's decision to cover the day's most popular praise songs and not focus on new material of his own weakens the record's impact. In fact, "Purified," one of two studio tracks on the release, was cowritten by Smith and his wife, and it's the CD's brightest moment. A spirit lifting surprise.......2007-02-10

I must admit to being skeptical about the majority of Christian music. I often find myself disheartened by the blandness, and even though I want to be uplifted, the experience is sanitised to the point of having no impact at all.
This CD however, is a strong exception. I bought it on a whim, and became hooked; The type of song is picked from favourite contemporary worship songs, a few cover versions of other Christian artists, and some new material. There are no surprises in the choices.

The surprise comes from the heart and passion that has been put into this album, both by Michael Smith and his musicians, to the audience themselves, whose response you can both hear and feel.
The musicians let themselves go, giving the sound the big feel of a pop concert, while never diminishing the reverence of the subject matter.
Be lifted - I was. I want to buy everyone I know a copy!

Okay, so he probably didn't "make" this soundtrack but you know what I mean (he did, however, write some of the songs). Last year it was the soundtrack to his "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" movie and now it's for "Madea's Family Reunion".

Things start off great with the song that you've all heard before, the Marvin Gaye-channeling "Find Myself in You" by Brian McKnight. Kem also blesses us with "Tonight", a duet with Marissa Rose, who's never really gotten her due in the music industry. And just like with the previous soundtrack how the compilers brought back M.I.A. artist Cheryl Pepsii Riley, this time Johnny Gill and Rachelle Ferrell come back with winners "You For Me" and "Wounds in the Way", respectively.

Old songs like Al Green's "Love and Happiness" and The O'Jays' "Family Reunion" are already classics and only enhance the soundtrack. Even the lone rap song, LL Cool J and Mary Mary's "We're Gonna Make It", fits in well (I appreciate this song more on here than on LL's Todd Smith album). I agree that this probably isn't the best album ever but none of the songs are bad and you can play it over and over again. And sometimes, that's all you need instead of searching for "the classic CD". -EJR

Smitty Lays an Egg.......2007-07-17

Big MWS fan here since 1990. This is the one blemish on a career I'd call nothing but remarkable and well deserved. There is just nothing here that is accessible and moves the listener. I have tried but do not share the sentiments of others regarding this release. Reviews seem largely mixed here. Starts bland and stays there the whole way through. Michael is a great talent that I have enjoyed immensely through the years but STAND mainly "SITS" idly in my cd cabinet. I'll revisit it every once in a while but it just simply fails to make it all the way through. Come on Smitty, we need a comeback on the next effort.

Go out and buy Hillsong United's "United We Stand" for a much more passionate, powerful, and FAR better arranged version of "The Stand". After one listen to the original, it will quickly become evident that Smith should not have gone anywhere near this song, no matter how hard he wishes to appear as relevant.

I have only been a fan a short time but I love this CD.I listen to it all the time and it did grow on me the more I listened to it.He is a very godly man and his music is inspiring.Everyone needs to listen.

Rich Mullins was one of the best songwriters to bless Christian Music, and this represents some of his best work. If you are unfamiliar with the depth of his writing, you will be amazed at the honest appraisal of the human heart that he reveals.

Meets me where I am.......2007-02-25

I came late to Rich Mullins. Faced with a new commute-from-hell, I asked my priest for advice on music to help me. I'm in Human Resources and I hoped to find something to help deliver me at the other end with any desire to serve my fellow man/employee. On her recommendation, I looked Rich up and settled on "Songs" to start. I have since joined the chorus of those who claim him as the voice of a generation. From "we are not as strong as we think we are" to "Hold me Jesus", this man spoke for me and to me. "You can't see yet where it is you're heading but one day you'll see the face of love..." I was in a meeting recently where we were asked to identify our spiritual heroes. There are many, but at that time, the first one that came to mind for me was Rich Mullins. I explained, in my small group, that it was sad he had died so young, that it seemed impossible such a spirit could be silenced. One of our group, who had never heard of him, challenged me to remember that as long as his words live on through those of us who he spoke to, his spirit will live on. And to that (and this), I say Amen.

Best CD of all time.......2006-11-11

This has to be the best CD of all time. I listen to many different types of music, but this is the best CD I own. Rich really had a special gift with words and music. After completely using up two tapes, I finally bought a CD and keep it in my CD changer all the time. I have given this CD to several people as a gift and everyone loves it. Thanks Rich for a great collection of "Songs".

What a gift to leave us with!.......2006-10-21

This album stands alone in Contemporary Christian music. Whereas so much of CCM features "power vocal" songs with a bible verse or single observation as a hook and run-of-the-mill Nashville production, Rich digs deep. The lyrics run the gamut from the playful to the poetic to the profound to the deeply personal - this man did not simply parrot Christian platitudes; he REALLY "got it" and communicated it. And how he communicated it - his vocals have an earnestness and urgency that power vocalists can only wish for. The songwriting reflects a level of craft that is found almost nowhere else in popular music. His instrumental versatility (excellent on hammer dulcimer, very good on piano, solid on acoustic guitar and mandolin) give his music a range remiscent of Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. Although some find the studio versions of his music over-produced, I find them fresh and compelling. This CD is the best of the best from the very best that Contemporary Christian Music has to offer. Even when compared to pop musicians in general, these works stand up. As a pro in the business that knew him once told me, Rich was in a class all by himself.

Building off the massive success of Worship, Michael W. Smith is back with yet another collection of worship-oriented material. With Worship, Smitty cleverly captured the essence of today's modern worship movement with familiar material. Don't look for such familiarity on the more eclectic Worship Again, yet the passion of praise still radiates strongly from this mostly live release. Smith showcases his masterful composition skills at the very start, merging Rich Mullins's "Step by Step" into his own "Forever We Will Sing." The end result is a dynamic opener that feeds well into the choral magnificence of "You Are the Lord," another one of Smith's own and another reason why he could be considered one of today's finest hymn writers. It's interesting how Smith also includes the Chris Tomlin-penned "The Wonderful Cross," an ethereal-sounding update of an old hymn, as well as the classic-sounding but little known "Ancient Words." The call-and-answer chorus of "I See You" is another highlight, as is the rocking "You Are Holy (Prince of Peace)." Smith's variations on the worship theme never sound stale. --Michael Lyttle

The song "You are Holy (Prince of Peace)" alone is worth the price of the CD. The CD was recorded live, and the the enthusiasm of the crowd adds a new dimension to the songs. Based on this recording, I can't wait to attend a Michael W. Smith concert.

A winning follow-up to "Worship".......2006-08-26

When I first heard this album, I had to admit that my first thought was that this was not as good as the first "Worship" album. I felt that parts of it were a bit too slow, and not as many contemporary worship standards were on it. Well, as time has gone on, I have grown almost as fond of this album as the first "Worship" one.

I love the inspiring "You Are The Lord", and I also enjoy the update to "The Wonderful Cross". Even more powerful to me is the melody and lyrics of "Ancient Words".

"Ancient words ever true
Changing me and changing you
We have come with open hearts
O let the ancient words impart"

Isn't that the essence of worshiping God and Jesus...studying and glorifying the ancient words of the Gospel and the rest of the Bible?

"Lord Have Mercy" is another heartfelt, beautiful song that contains a plea we all need to make..."Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy on me." For sure, this is a song that I would like to see added to my church's contemporary worship selection. A simple but moving song that a congregation as a whole could definitely sing.

For sure, the opening and closing concert tracks "Step By Step / Forever We Will Sing" and "You Are Holy (Price Of Peace)" are uptempo favorites that help the overall tempo of the performance. I also enjoy the studio track "Here I Am To Worship"--one my congregation does sing.

The bottom line is that this is still vintage Michael W. Smith worship music. I listen to either one of his worship albums and know that I would really like to "worship with him" in concert someday. For sure, in a lot of ways Michael still sets the standard.

A great blend of Worship Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy various tracks of this album, I enjoy track 1, but then find myself searching ahead to track 8 on... but the music from track 8 on is awesome. The only track that does not fit the album at all is the last song, not even sure what this song (I think it's about the Statue of Liberty) is doing on an album of praise and worship music to God is beyond me. All in all, worth the money for some very well arranged christian music.

Awesome CD!!!.......2005-05-28

This was my 1st Christian music purchase. I heard Michael on the radio, and fell in love with his voice! You will not be disappointed with this one- every song is a winner!
You can feel his enthusiam, and the way the audience reacts to him. Especially love "Lord Have Mercy" and it is also included non-live at the end of the cd. I have since purchased his "Worship" cd also, and it is great too, but I have to say, if I had to choose which I liked better, it would be "Worship Again". Happy Listening!
