Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two Styles in a Magnificent CD.......2005-03-31

Edmundo Ros had lots of inspiration when he was the director of his own orchestra, but the latin sounds that were surrounded around the world in the late 50's and 60's, were some kind of presentation cards from another musical talents as Xavier Cugat and Damaso Perez Prado (the "Mambo" creator).

In many ways Edmundo had the great idea from mixing his musical roots (his mother was from Republica Dominicana and his father was from England), and for that time Edmundo Ros was synonimous of latin music, brasilian sounds of caribean breeze.

But making a stop for the genre, the replacement of strings for winds (violins, violas and cellos for trumpets, tubas and saxos) puts his magnificent musical direction over the common knowledge in the latin rytmics, giving in this ocation another sounds: the classical "spanish" music and the "hispano" melodies, all of them in the "Strings Latino" part.

So, you can hear "Cumana", "La Cumparsita", "Green Eyes" (the ultimate masterpiece) or "Delicado" (with all my respect but this version hits down the Percy Faith's one). I'm not so interested hearing the "singing" Edmundo's side, but some songs did that, sorry to say but instrumental is superior to vocal (that are just few in this CD).

The other part is "Latin Hits I Missed", definitively these are the particular latin songs that Sir Ros makes as his normal interpretation, just hear "Manha do carnaval" or "Spanish Flea" and you can understand why in this CD are mixed two styles.

But at least, Edmundo Ros and his orchestra are making the "state of art" in the american-latina music, this work is magnific and the album is a true-rare songs colection. Arriba Edmundo!!!!

5 out of 5 stars absoulutely peerless !.......2004-01-14

Where to start in discribing these two albums, well as one of the reviewers above says "felicidade" has to be the best instrumental version ever and "solemente una vez" and "green eyes" are not to far behind it. I first heard these two albums in 1973 and can still play them often without growing bored.
Some of Ros,s phase 4 albums were hit and miss reguarding choice of material and trying to cover all markets but these two hit the mark on all counts. Finally 5 stars to Vocallion who have done a great job of remastering these albums for compact disc.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and rhythmic.......2004-01-04

Edmundo Ros, now in his 90's made several great albums in his prime, this cd contains two great examples. Strings Latino is the better album. Strings fit well with Ros's usual setting. The highlight of this album is Felicidade. The Jobim classic has NEVER sounded better as it does on this album. The arrangement begins with guitar before the basses and celli enter to support the melody softly played with flute. I dare any conductor to match this brilliant arrangement. A good album, one that should be part of any latin music collection.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING RECORDING.......2003-03-13

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST RECORDINGS I HAVE EVER HEARD. PERCUSSION AND ORCHESTRATION ARE THERE AT ITS BEST.

5 out of 5 stars THE TOPS OF THE LATIN ORCHESTRAS.......2002-07-04

I HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRED THE MUSIC OF EDMUNDO ROS.
HIS RYTHM IS ONE OF THE TOPS OF THE LATINO MUSIC
FOR ROMANCING AND DANCING. I JUST HOPE HIS MELODIES NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE.
