This whole album is great. If you love Salsa this album is a must!

5 out of 5 stars Just Great!.......2005-07-08

Victor Manuelle shows in this CD why he is one of the best actual salsa exponents. His voice sounds great as usual, and I love his talking. Great buy for salsa lovers!

5 out of 5 stars Great Concert.......2005-05-03

This is just pure professionalism. These past 2 years have been great for Victor Manuelle, and he deserves it. His music, his voice, everything makes this cd outstanding. I had the chance to go see him in Washington D.C. a few days ago. The concert was very much like the one on the cd and he sang a few more songs from his past productions. I hope they release a DVD of one of his concerts soon. This cd is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars El principe de la Salsa.........2007-05-14

Just the best! This concert is a hit...a real classic in the Salsa history...Gilbertito is the best "ambassador" of Puerto Rico!

5 out of 5 stars Change in style but still no content.......2005-02-13

The gimmick here is Carnegie Hall. Gilberto is a acceptable singer but he has little to do with the music. The ideas and images are passe and tired. His lyrcis are predictably banal. Santarosa is a symptom of the demise of Salsa. A formula that has been implemented to replace to that vibrant, organic NYC street sound. If you want to hear some real symphonic Salsa get Willie Colon's Baquine de los Angeltios Negros or Ruben Blades' Maestra Vida. Save your money one these.

4 out of 5 stars great striaghtfoward salsa.......2003-09-12

If you're looking for a good disc of straight-ahead modern salsa then you couldn't get any better than this one. The songs are intricate and very listenable, and the musicianship is absolutely incredible.

My personal favorite is "Perdoname", which has an awesome percussion solo break halfway through that could almost be in a latin rap song. When I lived in the Dominican Republic the song was a moderate hit and never ceased to pull people out onto the dancefloor.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2003-04-29

I strongly recommend this cd. it seems like every year gilberto keeps producing better and better salsa music year in and year out.this is one of his best ever.its great to listen or dance to it,either way whatever you prefer this is one that wont dissapoint fans.

Susan Graham has firmly established herself as one of our leading mezzos in opera and recital. Her voice, infinitely varied, perfectly focused, and produced, has the mellow glow of burnished bronze, but at the top she narrows her vibrato to give it a brighter, more intense quality. This live recording of her Carnegie Hall concert last April combines total vocal control with the spontaneity and excitement of a performance--complete with audience reactions--and displays her stylistic versatility, her charm, expressiveness, and communicative projection to brilliant advantage. The program features two German song cycles and several groups from her signature French repertoire. Brahms' "Gypsy Songs," one of his numerous Hungarian-influenced compositions, use texts derived from Hungarian folksongs and deal essentially with love and yearning. Graham captures all their changing moods, from melancholy to exuberance, making the last one soar ecstatically, but sometimes loses their simplicity in mannerisms and over-inflection. Alban Berg's "Seven Early Songs" on texts by various poets, written long before he became an atonalist, are super-romantic, amorous, dramatic; only the two final ones harbor hints of his future style. They are sung with rapturous inwardness. Four songs by Debussy on his own descriptive, pensive verses are calm, dreamy, mellow, caressing; four by Poulenc on poems of Apollinaire are satirical parodies; one is a bravura patter-song. Two songs by André Messager and one by Moises Simons, taken from their operettas, are basically cabaret songs and grand fun; they give Graham a fine opportunity to show the lighter side of her artistry. The encores include a serious song by Reynaldo Hahn, a humorous one by Debussy, Mahler's "Liebst du um Schönheit," a love song he wrote for his wife, and the first performance of a song written for Susan Graham by Ben Moore: a hilarious spoof on the fate of a mezzo condemned to sing trouser roles--with quotes from them--when she longs to be a "Sexy Lady." --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Susan Graham is a True Recitalist.......2004-12-16

Though not usually one for true live recordings that include audience applause and response, SUSAN GRAHAM AT CARNEGIE HALL works well on every level. Not only is she in top form (as is her collaborator Malcolm Martineau at he piano) vocally and interpretatively, she demonstrates here an obvious rapport with her audience that is magical.

The repertoire here could not be more varied - and successful in every portion of this recital. Graham's voice has that ability to move from her usual mezzo soprano range into the lyric/spinto range with the greatest of ease. The Brahms 'Zigeunerlieder' are full of zest and sparkle. The Debussy 'Proses lyriques' are sensually liquid and Graham's French diction is as perfect as it gets: the Poulenc cycle feels so very natural for all its underlying difficulties. The too rarely heard Berg 'Sieben fruhe Lieder' are elegant and involved and the Messanger and Simons highlight Graham's ease of strolling through unknown works, making them sound so familiar.

Encores are included and for once "thank goodness!" Susan Graham has a special affinity for Reynaldo Hahn and she has mad 'A Chloris' her very own. For the Mahlerites she offers 'Liebst du um Schonheit' (including a comment to the audience) and a Debussy song and a witty ditty written for her by Ben Moore - just for fun.

The audience fortunate enough to have been present during this live recording on April 14, 2003 have now a living memento. For the rest of us that magic is fully contained on this very special recording. Grady Harp, December 2004

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, haunting recording but not for everybody.......2006-02-24

This is a live recording from Carnegie Hall and it's beautifully recorded. Not everybody especially those who hasn't heard her before is going to like it, her voice shows her age but still has that sensual quality about it. The guitar accompaniment is equally beautiful. Her rendition of La LLorona is absolutely haunting and dramatic. A wonderful experience, but should not be an introduction to Chavela Vargas.

5 out of 5 stars emotional.......2005-06-27

This a great recording of a deeply moving performance. Chavela's voice might not be as sweet as it was in her youth but, as Jon Pareles of the New York Times said: "She has traded the illusion of youthful innocence for a galvanizing sense of drama. Each line of each song was a poised surge of emotion. She growled or sighed the word ''amor''; she could sound tearful, furious, desolate.". The raw energy captured in this concert is definitively worth getting it, even if just for the chance to listen to her beautiful interpretation of "Las Simples Cosas" and the contained tension of "La LLorona".

2 out of 5 stars Her voice completely gone on this album........2005-02-08

This CD is really only for collectors who want to hear this particular concert. However, be prepared, Chavela's wonderful voice is not to be found on this album. All the songs are familiar, but the voice isn't. Her voice cracks constantly, forcing her at times to speak the words rather than sing them and to remake the song to avoid the difficult notes. The crowd is boisterous too often calling out to her in the middle of a song-- which makes the CD hard even harder to listen to.

You would not give this CD to introduce him to Chavela. There are much better albums for that: the hard to find "Volver, Volver" being the one that most springs to mind. As I mentioned previously, this CD is only for collectors who feel they must have every last album of hers. If you think you're one of them, I'd still suggest that you try to find a site where you can download and listen to a track before committing to this album.

    5 out of 5 stars This CD is definitely a collector's item.......1999-09-27

Danny Rivera is one of the most sensitive and refined singers of Latin America. This concert gives the listener the opportunity to appreciate his musicianship, vocal and expressive qualities, which have remained intact throughout his impeccable career. There is no greater proof of a performer's success than watching a full-house audience sing along with him almost every word of his repertoire. This was one of the highlights of this magnificent concert in Carnegie Hall. Although it is impossible to single out a "favorite" in the program, especially moving were Mi viejo, Odiame, Amar o morir, Libre, and Tu pueblo, which is a latin american classic, and, in my opinion, comparable to Beethoven's Ode to Joy, suitable for a grand finale. Bravo Danny!

..even if I were not close to Lucecita, she is an idol in Latinamerica and throughout the world..having been with her during the Carnegie Hall rehearsals for this cd, I can tell you this lady transcends the word diva..she is magnificent and talented...the cd itself is a treasure of beautiful and modern music..everyone should listen to Lucecita..children and adults..she is quite a vocalist! Roberto Tirado

5 out of 5 stars Lucecita shines bigger than ever!!.......2001-01-05

I was at the Carnegie Hall concert where this recording was made and I screamed my head off then. Now that I listen to the recording I get goose pimples from the electricity and passion that Lucy's voice produced that night. The warm and love-filled duet with Chucho Avellanet in particular reignites sparks from Canta La Juventud days. But her rendition of Verde Luz, Gracias a la Vida, Jurame and Amanecer Borincano will draw you to your stereo's speakers as if hypnotized by the huge Lucecita of a bonfire!

5 out of 5 stars Larger than life Lucecita shines again.......2000-12-20

At last a multinational company has decided to market a recording from the most extraordinary performer Puerto Rico has produced over the last four decades, Lucecita Benitez. The only way to describe the emotional impact of this performer is to say that she is larger than life when she stands in stage to perform. Lucecita's versatility, emotional power, superb phrasing and expressive voice are evident in this live recording of her concert in Carnegie Hall. The orchestra directed by Cucco Pena provides excellent musical accompaniment to match this extraordinary performer. The only criticism is that the CD does not provide any information or photos from the concert and some of the songs in the concert were not included. This is a minor criticism considering this is a great recording.

        5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......2000-11-14

I pity the soul who has not being exposed to the voice of Lucecita Benitez. For more than 30 years, this incredible singer has covered almost all genres of the Spanish language music with incredible powerness, soul and intensity. One cannot help but being moved to whichever emotion she's expressing with her songs. In this Live album, she shines as bright as ever. Her delivery of Alfonsina y el Mar, Unicornio, and Si Tan Solo un Instante, take you to the deepest abysms of loss. Her Plena medley makes you dance and party, and so on with each one of her selections. This diva is in the same category as Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, Nina Simone and Cesaria Evora, as far as their unique interpretation, but she is in a category of her own when it comes to her voice power and versatility. When the rest of the world discover this artist, they won't be able to get enough of her!

5 out of 5 stars Best Latin Recording of this Year!.......2000-11-08

The best Latin Female Singer for the past 4 decades & the REAL QUEEN OF LATIN MUSIC finally gets a multinational record label to release one of her albums. Having recorded and released several albums since the 80's thru her own record label(LOBO RECORDS), the pride of Bayamon, Puerto Rico now will be able to reach new admirers thanks to BMG U.S. LATIN. This vocal powerhouse is one of the few artists capable of sucessfully covering various musical styles/genres. This 2 cd set contains most of her glorious concert at Carnegie Hall and shows how she can go from the still poignant Genesis (written for her by the late Puertorican composer Guillermo Venegas Lloveras) to Puertorican "jibaro" music composed by the late Ramito and the legendary Rafael Hernandez to ballads such as Que tal te va sin mi( by M. Alejandro from Spain) and Como la Marea & Me llevare conmigo( by Alberto Cortez from Argentina) to a Feisty Puertorican Plenas Medley and the Tango Uno(M. Mores) to a stunning and uncredited duet in the romantic classic bolero Estando Contigo(Madrigal)written by Don Felo from P.R. with her best duet partner and a legend in his own right, Chucho Avellanet to her classic closing song Oubou Moin(Corretjer/Brown). The sound of this recording is EXCELLENT! Only Complaints: No liner notes included by the record label, no credits to the fine orchestra conducted by the multitalented Cucco Pena, no photos of the concert in booklet and deleted song (Her never recorded version of Ruben Blades' Patria), here replaced by a new song in English.
