Forget the age of battling boy bands, the era of dueling young tenors is upon us. Hot on the heels of Josh Groban's dizzyingly successful, Ally McBeal-fueled debut comes this first international release from African-born, Greek-raised tenor Mario Frangoulis. There are some clear parallels between Groban's debut and this Frangoulis release, but some distinctive differences as well. While Groban coated his slick, David Foster-molded pop sense with a veneer of classical respectability, Frangoulis has effectively turned the formula inside out. With similar classical training--but a few crucial years of experience on his American rival--Frangoulis treats the classics reverently but not slavishly, with the title track effectively turning an aria from Puccini's Tosca into romantic Europop. Elsewhere, the international flavor is further expanded by three melody-rich songs ("Hijo de la Luna," "La Luna de Valencia," and "Naturaleza Muerta") by Spanish singer-songwriter Jose Maria Cano and a sing-along-ready take on the 1950s Neapolitan chestnut "Luna Rossa."

Like Groban, Frangoulis and producer Steve Woods also plumb the music of la cinema italiana for inspiration, turning Nicola Piovani's bittersweet Life Is Beautiful theme into the ponderous "Buongiorno Principessa," but faring better with a moody, dramatic take on Rota-Wertmuller's "Canzone Arribiata." The obligatory rock-pop cover here is the flamenco-inflected "Nights in White Satin", with Frangoulis joined in a bilingual duet with original Moody Blue Justin Hayward that's surprisingly effective. Less showy perhaps than Groban's debut, but a more nuanced and emotionally satisfying album overall. --Jerry McCulley

When I purchased Mario's DVD I had never heard of him. I was actually browsing Josh Groban items when I noticed the [...] suggested items below and had a look.
What a find. Mario Frangoulis is an outstanding performer with an incredible voice. The quality of his concert is excellent with a full orchestra and top notch audio quality. I have watched this performance 7 times and can't wait to see it again.

I had borrowed this CD from a co-worker a couple of years ago and was so thrilled to find it available here. Mario is wonderful and so easy to listen to. If you like Josh Groban, Russell Watson, Andrea Boccelli than you'll love Mario Frangoulis.

This is definitely my favorite album of ALL TIME! Every song takes you through a personal journey of self discovery, all the lyrics will pierce your soul. I only bought this CD because I liked the song 'inocente' however I ended up liking all other tracks even more and now I'm a Fangoria fan.

Another brilliant album from Fangoria.......2003-12-01

Naturaleza Muerta is definitely one of Fangoria's best works, and it's my (second) favorite album of theirs. Nearly every one of the songs on the album is absolutely brilliant. I try to tell everyone I encounter about Fangoria, because it is horrible how unknown they are outside of Spanish-speaking countries, and they deserve a lot more credit than what they are given. My favorite tracks on the album are "Hombres," "Amo El Peligro," "Ese Hombre," and "Un Austronauta Solo, Flotando." If you're a fan of darkwave, industrial, or even all-around dance music I suggest you give Fangoria a try. Their sound basically covers all ends of the spectrum. You won't be disappointed.

There are few words to describe this album: it is simply a journey through the deepest thoughts and emotions someone else can create on us.
Alaska and Nacho = Fangoria are the result of an inner exploration of experiences and musical influences. Far away from the audience so close to their souls. We all find familiar the lyrics of NAturaleza Muerta and tend to find them more personal as we approach to the last track.
Electronica, sensual, danceable...this is the kind of cd you will stick to while you drive.

Fangoria, the spanish dance-pop alternative.......2003-05-26

Fangoria is probably the best alternative disco-pop band from Spain. Alaska, the female vocalist, was the muse of the 80's "movida madrileña" a kitch artistic and cultural expression of this decade. She shares her talent and popularity with Pedro Almodovar in some of his inner films and, also, in this decade her have some international hits: "Bailando", "Como pudiste hacerme eso a mi", "Ni tú ni Nadie", "Un Hombre de Verdad" and, of course, "A Quién le Importa" probably the most popular gay latin dance classic.
Actually, twenty years ago and after a dark musical period, Fangoria/Alaska returns with an espectacular work, full of good words and deep dance rhythms. Probably, Fangoria shows in this CD the musical influences of bands like Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, The Cure and Dead or Alive, but with a genuine own style. The result is an incredible and strange musical coktel, deep and dark but...I LIKE IT.

OLVIDO & NACHO ARE BACK!!!.......2003-05-23

ok maybe not the most originl material,and maybe they pinch here
and there from current dance music to create this dance-travaganza but still is a great album,nacho & olvido(alaska)are excelent song writers,maybe "NATURALEZA MUERTA"is a little dark
but they always been kind of dark,they always have taken chances
in their lyrics,back in the day with "LOS PEGAMOIDES"and"ALASKA
Y DINARAMA"Olvido,nacho and former"pega-rama"carlos berlanga they been writen songs about suicide,murder,incest and every single taboo imaginable with great rythm and in some cases sence
of humor,they were pioners inthe spanish punk-rock back in the 80's(KAKAdeluxe),"DINARAMA"took a more pop direction in the music style,then with "FANGORIA" they went hard core electronca
mostly instrumental stuff with few vocals by olvido("UNA TEMPORADA EN EL INFIERNO","FAN FATAL")but now with"NATURALEZA MUERTA"their back where they belong the radio and the dance floor
that is,every track in this cd sounds like a single,all great songs,they got 4 singles out of this cd "NO SE QUE ME DAS","HOMBRES","ETERNAMENTE INOCENTE"& one of my favorites"MAS
QUE UNA BENDICION"they haven't had this many singles out of one
album since Alaska y dinarama's"NO ES PECADO"(buy it too),my friend from spain came to visit me and he had 2 cd-singles from spain of the songs"NO SE QOE ME DAS"&"HOMBRES" and the remixes
were just out of this world,...so do your self a favor and buy"NATURALEZA MUERTA"
you will find your self playing this cd over & over.
