3 out of 5 stars They played it safe........2007-07-10

If you like gothic/symphonic metal like I do, you're probably wondering if Lacuna Coil's Karmacode is an album worth checking out. Out of all the albums Lacuna Coil has released, Karmacode is my least favorite. The combination of guitar lines, keyboard work, and contrasting dual female/male vocals help create their melodic sound. The thing I like best about Lacuna Coil is that they always seem to create music that goes perfectly with Scabbia's voice. However, in this album they keep the same beat and rhythmic patterns time after time which makes the album really boring. It would seem they have abandoned their old music style to satisfy the likings of a more mainstream audience even though they are pretty well known. I'm not very happy with this album due to this sort of "selling out". I wouldn't recommend this album to new fans of this band. If they liked the newer stuff more, it's not a good thing because they will be missing out on timeless classics from the band.

Even though most of the songs were very repetitious I really liked "To The Edge." "Life is so short/Close to the edge of another backdoor/Life is so sure/Life will be ready to twist up your world" makes me think about how life has its twists and turns opening new doors for us. If you want to check out Lacuna Coil's best work, listen to Comalies.

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia!.......2007-07-04

Italians have always been known for their gift to romance the senses. Lacuna Coil is no exception. In fact, they are the 'masters of passion' - hypnotizing you with their sizzling bass and guitar lines, intriguing drum rolls, and fusion of male and female vocals. From the first listen, you can feel that this group of 6 are special to the music scene. They are not overly dramatic, yet they leave a mark on you. They do not scream and clamor, yet their voices are heard.

"La Famiglia" (the family) is what they call all who enter their world, and it is a most accurate assessment not only of how they relate to their followers, but how they treat each other. I have been to their shows all over the world, and each time I am there, I feel like I am being held in an embrace of sorts. Their music is warm, inviting, and exciting. And if you were fortunate enough to see them on either the Jaegermeister Tour or the Hottest Chicks in Metal Tour, you know what I am talking about.

They are the 'touchable' band - the band that comes out before and after the show, and showers you with hugs, kisses, and reminds you of how happy they are to see you again. Hence, "La Famiglia".

Their newest release, Karmacode, is a journey into spiritual curiousity, self-introspection, and philosophical wonder. Each track on the album introduces you to another facet of their lives. Their lyrics based upon their experiences are not unique and are highly applicable to us all.

Not too hard, not too soft, just right. Good for driving, for making love, for reading, for exercising. Their lyrics are clean. And true to form, they have included a song in Italian (which are always my favorites). Even though listeners may not understand the Italian lyrics, the sheer beauty of the language to music is worth listening to.

Their take on "Enjoy the Silence" is refreshing and light, but still maintains the darm and ethereal integrity of the original release by Depeche Mode.

Well worth a listen!

4 out of 5 stars An interesting artist to watch for in the future.......2007-03-26

I have only recently learned about the existence of Argentine singer songwriter Coti Sorokin (real name: Fidel Ernesto; his parents must have been huge fans of the Cuban Revolution). Of course, I have heard his megahit "Nada de esto fue un error" on the radio a couple of years ago, but I thought at the time the singer was Andres Calamaro. The album is really good, though he sometimes seems to be too influenced by Calamaro. There are several good songs here (my personal favorite is Otra Vez), and he is accompanied by such disparate artists as Paulina Rubio and Julieta Venegas (in the said hit, and in a couple of other songs). He is an accomplished producer as well, being the responsible of Venegas last two successful albums (he produced it and wrote most of the hit songs for her). An interesting artist that deserves to be watched in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Enhanced Greatest Hits........2006-10-09

I never heard about Coti until I saw his video next to Paulina Rubio and Julieta Venegas singing "NADA FUE UN ERROR". A song that has become an international smash and gave Coti the opportunity to show his talent.
This live album includes all his hits plus 3 new songs. To be honest I don't know which are the hits and which are the new ones, anyway, I think that this is a good production including duets next to Paulina, Julieta, Ismael Serrano and Josemi Carmona and besides this Coti's music is very fresh and relaxed, his lyrics are good and his voice is fine. All this together makes a good combination.
The highlights from my point of view are the songs "NADA FUE UN ERROR", "ANTES QUE VER EL SOL", "OTRA VEZ", "TU NOMBRE", "ESTA MAÑANA" and "NUECES".

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album.......2005-10-28

I've loved Coti's music ever since his self-titled debut album, and I'm glad he's made it to his third record. His songs are great live, especially "Nada Fue Un Error" and his new song, "Mar de Gente." Maybe now he'll finally make it to mainstream. I can only hope.

4 out of 5 stars Because of PAULINA RUBIO.......2005-09-26

I think this album is great. I didn't know who Coti was un until his name was tied to Paulina Rubio. NADA FUE UN ERROS is hot hit and so is OTRA VEZ.

4 out of 5 stars Listen to the true fans.......2007-04-26

Anyone who has been a fan of Coti since he first came onto the music scene (2003- Antes que ver el sol) will appreciate his new album, "Gatos y Palomas." It's light, it's fun, and it's enjoyable music. The only issue that I have with it is that he does a little too much storytelling, talking about his grandfather and his people in Argentina, but it's not that bad. My favorite tracks are, of course, "Cancion de adios" and also "Sueltame." Overall, it's a good record.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-04-07

My reaction to Coti's Gatos y Palomas after listening it for the last several days is that it is a weaker album than his previous (and highly successful) Esta Mañana y Otros Cuentos. First disappointment: no guests in this album (the presence of Julieta Venegas, Paulina Rubio, Ismael Serrano and others were one of the high points in Esta Mañana, as Coti is not that great a singer).
OK, let's deal with the songs here:
1) Diamante: a good hit song, among the best in the album.
2) Mi Espacio: a good rock song, though nothing spectacular.
3) El Inmigrante: First song to make you cringe. Coti has tended to avoid politics in his previous albums, but here he can't resist making a demagogic tirade about the rights of immigrants, speaking in the first person. You know, Coti, when Spaniards show concern about the high level of immigration in their country in recent years, they don't mean you, but the millions of Africans, who come to Spain with very little skills and with a culture that is very different from Spain's.
4) Canción de adios: a typical romantic song from Argentine rock, somewhat influenced by tango. It's the hit single, and is a good song.
5) Las horas: A song about a guy suddenly leaving his girlfriend. Nothing special.
6) Encender: A dull song.
7) Sueltame: Cowritten with Julieta Venegas, nothing great here. The music reminds me of Joaquin Sabina's Ataque de Tos.
8) Atontado: Another dull song.
9) Toño el mendigo: Another clumsy song dealing with social issues, here the life of a vagabond. It's funny that Coti's acknowledged idol Joaquin Sabina never had to appeal to such songs, yet his credentials as a socially concerned singer are irreproachable.
10) Como tangos en Madrid: Boring song.
11) Últimamente: a song somewhat better than the previous ones, but nothing memorable.
12) La burbuja de los 17: zzzzzzzzz
13) Quiero ser mar: this album is getting long.
14) Buenos Aires: Musically, the song is fine, but the lyrics are full of clichés about Buenos Aires, and the nostalgia people from the city feel when they leave. Hey, Coti, you are not even from Buenos Aires, you are from Rosario. As I understand, you have never even lived here, except perhaps for short periods.
So, I found the album disappointing. There is not a single song here that I would like to listen again and again, while there were several in his previous album.

3 out of 5 stars First album by Coti is interesting, though less accomplished than some of his later efforts.......2007-04-18

Coti (real name: Fidel Ernesto Sorokin) had been known in musical circles for some time as the author and producer of many hits for such Latin American artists as Julieta Venegas, Diego Torres and Paulina Rubio. In 2002, he try his hand with a solo album called simply Coti. Though this is his first album (he would make three more), it was the last one I bought. I have heard many of the songs from "Esta Mañana y otros Cuentos", his third album, a live recording of his hits, with such guests as Rubio and Venegas. In Coti, the songs are played on a more acoustic manner, and the results are inferior to "Esta Mañana" in my opinion, since Coti's voice is not his forte. However, Nada fue un Error as recorded here is a good effort, as performed with Andres Calamaro, in a less commercial version than the hyperknown one with Rubio and Venegas.
