While not a soundtrack per se, this suite of songs was inspired by Claude Lelouche's And Now...Ladies and Gentlemen (2001). In the film, French singing star Patricia Kaas portrays a nightclub chanteuse suffering from a brain tumor who falls for a similarly afflicted thief (played by Jeremy Irons.) Given the plotline, it¹s not surprising that the tunes are drawn primarily from the classic chanson tradition. But strangely, Kaas interprets most of them in the maudlin English translations once favored by the Rat Pack, Rod McKuen, and Bobby Darin. Even so, and despite her consistently over-cautious phrasing, the vocals are attractively languid and husky, inflected with a dead-pan world-weariness that Marlene Dietrich would have recognized. However, it would be pleasant to hear Kaas essay this repertoire in a more intimate, warm-toned setting. As it is, her voice is periodically overwhelmed by echo plus poorly calibrated electric bass and keyboard lines. --Christina Roden

When we ordered this DVD we thought we would have another Frida Boccara. Instead, we found the music was bland. Also, the songs were all sung in English except one verse of one song.

Haunting, captivating,sexy an unbelievable album. The movie "Ladies and Gentlemen" staring Jeremy Irons, patrica Kaas the singer and many other stars is one DVD you must purchase.

I can't get enough of this album at the moment, for some reason! Anyone who cares to look through my reviews will see that this album is quite a strong departure from my usual tastes in music. So I have to say that this album has impressed me, even though it is decidedly not the usual sort of thing I like.

The album consists of chansons, torch songs and standards, mainly sung in English, not that French bothers me at all! (in some ways, I probably would have preferred it if more of the songs were sung in French) However, Patricia Kaas has won me over on this album with her very stylish and touching renditions of these songs. She sings with precision and style. She phrases the songs well, sings with directness and simplicity, and she doesn't resort to anything overwrought or hysterical, overall, her approach is that of a mature and intelligent adult. Does that make any sense?! Probably not. Most of the songs have a melancholy nature and expect a lot of music in minor keys!


This album sounds very good late at night and I like to listen to it whilst having a glass of wine on my own. Yes, I do feel the urge to shed a tear or two when I listen to Piano Bar.

in an era of falsetto and shrill voices what a pleasure to find a real voice. She sings so richly and deeply where ever you are and what ever you're doing you pause to listen.

It doesn't get better than this........2001-08-01

I first bought this recording on vinyl back in 1975. Gerard Schwartz has since moved on to a career in conducting, but as this recording shows, he's a true Master of his craft. I'm a trumpet player and I know what a good sound is. This guy's got it!

More than technical perfection, the tunes are delivered with delicacy, grace and power.

This is a very good cd for a trumpet player. Many songs of Herbert L. Clarke and Jean Babtiste Arban are there in their familiar versions. If you get this cd, you ought to get Cornet Favorites also. The solos on both cd's stick to the versions found in Arban's Complete Conservatory Method and Clarke's 24 Charateristic Studies, so you can follow them note for note. Carnaval has wind symphony accompaniment and Cornet Favorites has piano accompaniment.

If you have the Arban Complete Conservatory Method and Herbert Clarke's 24 Characteristic Studies, then you have the versions of the solos that are played on this cd, and can benefit from hearing them played. All songs use piano accompaniment so you will have no trouble hearing the cornet. Carnaval (Winton Marsalis) has some of the same songs, but the cornet is harder to hear because of the wind symphony accompniment.

This is the best verison of Carnival I have heard. Classic Wynton also provides a fantastic interpretation on the most difficult trumpet solo of all time. But Schwarz shows amazing control, fantastic percision, and baffling dexterity. The Debutante and the Bride, etc. are also impressive. Its a shame Schwarz gave up trumpet to conduct. Having played these songs myself, I definitely recommend it to any classical trumpet enthusiast/student

Cornet Favorites.......1999-12-28

I enjoyed the cd because of the literature being performed. However, Schwarz's performance is mediocre and lacks luster. The sound is dull and uninviteing.The tempos were unusal and it felt there was no ensemble with the trumpet and piano performance.
I felt there was not a musical product produced in this recording.

Album Description

From "Orlando" to "The Tango Lesson" and onward, director Sally Potter has always been closely involved with the soundtracks to her films--with outstanding results. This score for "Yes" is no different, as it weaves diverse music--including Philip Glass, Gustavo Santaolalla, Kronos Quartet, "Fawn" (by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan), and Eric Clapton with BB King--into both a superb tapestry for this motion picture and as a compelling listening experience on its own.

Further original music by Sally Potter was made with the participation of long-term collaborator, the celebrated guitarist, composer and improviser Fred Frith, who has played on Sally's last four films. Frith has composed for Ensemble Modern and Asko Ensemble amongst others. Best known world-wide as an improvising guitarist, he played on albums ranging from The Residents and Reni Lussier to Brian Eno and Amy Denio.

Quite an eclectic mix of artists and music. I am not sure this CD is for everyone...

From hypnotic instrumentals to howling blues to middle eastern influenced dances to chill dance grooves to classical piano to latin salsa, the soundtrack takes you on an aural journey through diverse cultures. I'm sure it reflects the culture clash depicted in the movie's storyline.

Listening to the sample tracks (at Barnes & Noble.com) makes me wish that I lived in a more culturally diverse area... This is the type of movie I have to watch on DVD because theaters won't risk showing independent films here.

To find the sample tracks at B&N search for "Yes" as the title, then sort the results by "date released". Since it just came out, it should be near the top of the list. Enjoy.

BTW, my 4-star rating is based only on the sample tracks I was able to hear.

A pretty puzzle among song cycles........2006-07-22

The 'Italienisches Liederbuch' has always been a puzzle to me, as a devoted listener to German Lieder from Schubert to Mahler and Zemlinsky, but my casual listening to this work always puzzled me. The style of music is quite clearly nothing like Italian songs, and they are all written in German. Now I know Wolf was the last great Lieder specialist, so he must have had something up his sleeve.

Just as I resort to reading the directions after all putzing around with software installation fails, I read the liner notes and discover that the Italian influence is in the style of lyrics, written by Paul Heyse. All the short pieces (46 in all) roughly alternate between male (Olaf Bar) and female (Dawn Upshaw) pieces and there is some degree of conversation between the two parts.

Reading the text, I also detect that the subject matter is distinctly Italian, with food, wine, and carnal appetites being high on the list of subjects (unlike the very sentimental German take on love).

I am generally fond of Dawn Upshaw's singing, but she is clearly a lightweight, and does not do as good a job as, for example Anne Sophie Von Otter does with Wolf's 'Spanisches Liederbuch'.

The work is so interesting, this rendition encourages me to seek out additional interpretations. Stay tuned!

This Makes You Want MORE MOZART!.......2006-08-13

This is excellent for
a) people whom haven't really heard much Mozart and
b) those whom are "easing back into" his music.
I fit into the latter category. I recently watched Amadeus for the first time and was STAGGERED by the movie...as fictional as it may well be.
I just HAD to have more than my modest collection of his piano works, and this 2-disc set is PERFECT!
Also, I was never too much into Opera, and THIS collection helped cure me of that as well! Just enough highlights to intrigue...

A glorious sharing.......2003-12-14

Although listed as being by "various artists", these two discs were recorded in 1996 and 1997, respectively, by the monks and choirboys of Downside Abbey and School (near Bath, in England).

The discs represents a sharing with the rest of the world of the music which brings together the two communities, of monks and schoolboys, at masses in the Abbey.

The quality of the recording on disc 1 is superior to that on the later disc, but both convey the beauty and simplicity of the religious music and plainsong which lie at the heart of Benedictine communities. You do not have to be religious, yourself, to enjoy the sense of peace and serenity conveyed by the pieces. Relax and let the sound wash over you.

The title, "Gregorian Chillout", tends to belittle the faith which underlies the music, but do not let this put you off. Buy these and enjoy them to their fullest. You will not be disappointed.
