A lot like Tori Amos: female vocals, piano, acoustic setup... you get it........2007-04-28

You may be familiar with Emily Haines from her work with rock act Metric (where she is the leader) or prog/post-rock music collective Broken Social Scene (where she shares songwriting/singing responsibilities with many others). "Knives Don't Have Your Back" is unlike any of her other work. She's not "loud" here, nor is she experimental, musically speaking. But one thing she accomplishes is a level of beauty, combining her voice and piano with an acoustic setup, that parallels the work of Tori Amos and other female singers rooted in the acoustic tradition.

The outcome, recorded between 2002 and 2006, is a gorgeous album that becomes an instant classic and will live for the ages.

This is a beautiful peice of work. Usually i find entire albums of piano driven peices tiring, but she pulls it off with amazing style. its incredibly difficult to pidgeon hole these peices into a particular style, because it is all over the place in every song. the lyrics are just as amazing, and, even though it sounds cheesey. i related. i would look forward to hearing more of her solo song

Haunting.......2007-02-14

I haven't actually heard Emily Haines in her original band, so I can't compare, but this album is beautiful. The songs stay in your head for days after listening, and she puts tons of emotion without the slightest trace of cheese or saccharine. The lyrics move effortlessly from sarcasm to longing to anger to sadness, but somehow never becoming overly melodramatic.

For people who have not heard metric.......2007-01-15

This is from the perspective of someone who hasn't heard Metric's music before. I am a huge fan of women soloists, tori amos, cat power, beth gibbons, vienna teng, bjork, pj harvey, etc.. and i have to say i havn't herad anything quite like this album. If you like meloncholy female pianists, you should definately suport this woman. "Knives Don't Have Your Back" is very melodic, very stark, humble, and quite poetic. The album is fairly quiet for the most part, but there are some lively and awesome band moments too, mostly in the first half, as in "Mostly Waving" with a hip brass section. "Doctor Blind" is another vibrant favorite. Each song is catchy enough to stand out, even the ones at the end, after a few listens, but there is still a definate unity between all the songs, despite them being written throughout the course of her life. A friend lent this to me and after one listen i was completely addicted. The only song i didn't think was as good as the rest was "lottery", though it's not a bad song, I just don't get what she's really trying to express when she refers "sexual suicide is a new crime, lets commit it". Overall her lyrics are both fresh and familiar, "...rather give the world away than wake up lonely.","she calls around finds me crying, wish i was capable of lying sometimes" Other favorites are "Crowd Surf Off a Cliff" and "Reading in Bed".

This album has a place next to the best of them.

Truely moving and inspiring!.......2007-01-06

I am a huge Metric fan from seeing them in concert to listening to "Live It Out" nonstop for almost all of 2005 into 2006. So when I discovered that Emily Haines was releasing a solo album consisting of her and the piano w/ dark and politically moving songs I knew I had to purchase it. My first instant favorite song was Track #2 "Doctor Blind" which is understanding on so many levels w/ an excellent video to accompany it. Of course I love Track #1 "Our Hell" especially the line "our hell is a good life." Track #3 "Crowd Surf Off A Cliff" is an achning beautiful song contenting the line I love "if you find me hide me I don't know where I've been." In Track #4 "Detective Daughter" I love the line "There are so many skirts under the table. None of these long legs are mine. She calls around finds me crying. Wish I were capable of lying sometimes." And then as the music drifts off Emily swoons "Love is hell,hell is love. Hell is asking to be loved." I just adore that line it is like no other. Track #8 "Reading In Bed" contents the thoughtful line "with all the luck you had why are your songs so sad sing from the book you were reading in bed and took to heart." It makes you wonder if she is talking about herself b/c Emily Haines has said in many interviews relating to this album that it was a self discovery for her and that it was much more personal than anything she could have done w/ Metric. As a whole the album is understanding and a thoughtful piece of work that is at times depressing but relieving in a sense b/c who can't relate to feeling terrible or singled out. I love the style of the writing and her whispering voice is so breathtaking and almost sympathetic at the same time. Just a true gem!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

I grew up listening to Zamfir's pan flute soothing music, then for the past 15 years, I've been away from it until I heard The Lonely Shepherd while watching Kill Bill. I was pleasantly surprised to find the CD at Amazon and bought it at once. Many of the other songs on this CD are good as well, but nothing beats The Lonely Shepherd.

I dont care for any of the other songs on the CD, but the "Lonely Shepherd" theme is very beautiful and sad. Zamfir was obviously deeply in love with the panpipes. Listen to his "Picnic at Hanging Rock" soundtrack and you'll know what I mean. I highly recommend this CD.

I was once a punk rocker. I listened to the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Black Flag, and The Dead Kennedys. I have a string of gigs under my belt with various punk bands, a long list of one night stands with rocker chicks, and did enough drugs to make Keith Richards OD. All that changed the night I listened to Zamfir.

Alone in my apartment I played this CD while cleaning a puke staine off my carpet. I don't know whose it was, but I'd like to thank him because it led me to my new life. I have since thrown away my guitars, amps, and entire music collection. It is all garbage by comparison to this and in the trash is where it all belongs.

How can anyone listen to 'Summer of 42' and not fall to their knees by the sheer beauty of it? The Lonely Shepard title track brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to it. It brings me to a magical place where no one gets arrested for shoplifting and everyone has peace in their hearts.

I cannot find a panflute at the music store, so I'm trying to make one out of PVC pipe and old bongs. I think I found the G, A, and D major chords, but can't quite find F. A silly straw with a slit in it can make a pretty decent B minor, but it stretches out after a couple of days.

All my friends have abandoned me and I haven't been with a woman in three months, but it is all worth it. I now happily skip through life with merriment in my heart. No more drugs for me, Zamfir is my natural high.

Ever-reigning Queen of Sopranos.......2007-05-28

Listening through these two discs, one thought kept leaping up to mind: will ever there be another soprano as versatile and accomplished as Lucia Popp? Died in 1994 at the early age of 54, the operatic world hadn't really mourned her enough.
People are still lingering on Maria Callas, the 'star' soprano with all her glamour and legendary life could offer.
Real listeners, however, could not give up the memory of Lucia Popp's terrific artistry and almost supernatural voice.
Her Rusalka, her Solveig, her Susanna, Zerlina, Despina in the da Ponte/Mozart trio, her terrific Queen of the Night (unsurpassed by ANY subsequent sopranos up till now), and ALSO her Pamina in the same opera. In any language you ask her to sing, and she excelled. I marvel at the Letter Scene in Eugene Onegin - only if Lucia had the chance to perform the whole opera during her short life! The joy, the expectation, the emotional tribulations, so vividly captured in girlish and pure timbre. No one will ever beat her; not even Fleming and Netrebko.
"Weird and wonderful" - that's what Elisabeth Schwarzkopf said of Lucia Popp's singing. We today would modify it to 'wonderful and unsurpassable'.
This 2-CD set is an absolute must have, even if you have never heard of Lucia Popp before.

This is a wonderful album showcasing the very best of Lucia Popp (as the title suggests). Her voice was absolutely beautiful. She could sing the slavic languages like no one else. Her version of Dvorak's Song to the Moon is unbeatable. I dare anyone to find a better performance! Also, the song from Die Zauberflute -Ah Ich fuls (sp?) is outstanding. I've yet to hear a better version. Her diction was fantastic and while she wasn't the highest soprano around - she knew what worked for her voice. This is album is a keeper!

Lucy: The Reigning Queen of Opera.......2004-07-12

Lucia Popp is one of the best sopranos to ever grace the operatic/classical voice stage. This CD compilation shows her progression through lyric Handel to lyric and dramatic Mozart (her Der Holle Rache from Magic Flute is unrivaled) to tender art song and operetta literature. The first disc also showcases her adeptness with 20th Century literature as well as the ability to step out of the traditional four languages of opera. Any avid music fan MUST have this CD compilation.

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was certainly one of the greatest singers of her own, or indeed any other time. An obsessive perfectionist, her flawless technique and intonation over a huge range, vocal flexibility, breath control, phrasing, stylistic versatility, and above all her focused, radiantly beautiful sound were matchless and incomparable. All these are on full display on this generous 2-CD set, which features over a dozen arias, songs by Schubert, Wolf and Richard Strauss, and some lighter fare. The recordings were made between 1950 and 1967, and the singing becomes better and better, the voice richer and more varied, the expression deeper and more immediate. Not surprisingly, the peaks come in the arias from her signature roles in Mozart's Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi fan tutte; Richard Strauss' Ariadne, Rosenkavalier, and Arabella, which rise to real ecstasy; and arias from Weber's Freischütz and Smetana's Bartered Bride, which are wonderfully intimate and touching. She is less convincing in roles she never sang on stage, and the "childish" voice she cultivated especially for Hänsel and Gretel is unnatural and contrived. The same is true of the last two "popular" numbers, which sound condescending and artificial. The songs, however, have all her customary finesse and inwardness; the Wolf group, perhaps chosen for its gentle humor, is charming, while Strauss' "Four Last Songs" (represented by two) shimmer and soar. Schwarzkopf's singing had instantly recognizable characteristics: a tendency to hold back both vocally and emotionally, giving a sense of noble restraint, but also of cool detachment; excessive use of color and nuance, creating a fussy, calculated and somewhat artificial air. Only rarely does she "let go" with full voice and spontaneous feeling. However, as these recordings show, she invariably inspires admiration and captures ear and heart through the inimitable, glorious beauty of her voice. --Edith Eisler

The engineering and audio quality of these 1960's performances are surprisingly good. The songs are wonderfully peformed and cover a range of periods and styles, but I find myself returning to her recording (also re-released on CD) of Strauss' "Four Last Songs", which I would give 6 stars -- my favorite recording of all time.

RIP DAME ELIZABETH (1915-2006).......2006-08-04

This set is a fine tribute to this extraordinary singer and musician. I was saddened to read about her passing. She had a long life (90 years) and inspired a whole generation of singers and music lovers throughout the world.

SCHWARZKOPF ----- ONE OF THE GREATS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.......2006-01-29

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's career is what legends are made of. She is every bit as fundamental to classical singing in the twentieth century as is Maria Callas. Schwarzkopf sang with refinement, polish, beauty of voice, and meticulous articulation. She was the greatest Mozart and Strauss soprano of her day; her ability to sing the operetta music of Lehar, Suppe', and Johann Strauss has not been equalled; she performed with distinction orchestral compositions of Mahler, Brahms, Bach, and Handel; her Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, and Mahler lieder were exemplary. She sang many operatic roles, far more than many people realize, and was certainly the definitive Marshallin in "Rosenkavalier" throughout the 1950's and 1960'. I saw her many times in recital in Chicago, and even at the time of her farewell (which I was fortunate enough to see), she was sublime. All of the superlative qualities of Schwarzkopf are generously demonstrated throughout these two wonder CD's. Virtually every item is magnificent (though obviously some will prefer some to others) and has the detailed Schwarzkopf imprint stamped right into the music. This CD, great as it is, represents only a very small part of the greatness of Schwarzkopf. I already own tons of her operas and recitals, from which many of the items here come from. But for the sake of completeness, I will probably add it. A person who loves great singing can never have too much of the art of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. She's a vocal icon.

I only want to say that you can hear, in this double cd, one of the great singers of all time. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Why? Because she sings all the arias and lieder with pure of tone, brilliance, perfect inflexion, modulation, excellent control breath, measured vibrato, and, all above, great emision of colours. She is master in this art.

The beat-heavy world of reggaeton often gets repetitive, but Don Omar mixes things up with diverse vocal styles and infectious beats. Simmering grooves start, stop, slow down and are turned upside down throughout the disc. Don Omar remains an intriguing presence throughout, tearing through uptempo, tropical-flavored jams ("Dale Don Mas Duro," "Caserios #2," "Provocandome") and slowing things down during contemplative tracks "Aunque Te Fuiste" and "Quien La Vio Llorar." It was a good cd...really good cd actually. He did a really really smart move using Glory for Dale Don Dale and Dale Don Mas Duro...Glory is the next biggest thing. But over-all it was a good cd...

I saw J Guerreros review on the front page and I was surprised someone with a brain was actually liking this cd. This is equally as bad as 50 cent, and all the other horrible music out there.

The first time I heard William Preucil play "live," it was the Symphony No. 5 by Shostakovich. He was a young man and my expectations weren't ready for what came next. Having collected all of the top recordings, I ran home after the concert to confirm, this guy played -- far and away -- better than any recording I had ever heard. The last time I heard William Preucil play "in person," it was a Mozart Divertimento with a chamber orchestra. How often do you go crazy over a violin solo from a Mozart Divertimento? Although Mr. Preucil's solos were extended, not a single note went by without the entire audience sitting on the edge of their seats, riveted. Years later, I was in a CD shop talking about recordings of violinists when the shop owner mentioned, "the most memorable" violin solo he had ever heard. It was William Preucil's performance that night, of this Mozart Divertimento. I wasn't the only one to maintain that recollection. Next, I was in a movie theater where the New York City Ballet's production of the Nutcracker had been released as a feature film. Having recently studied and listened to EVERY recording available to Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Ballet, I was surprised during the film to hear the big violin solo from Sleeping Beauty suddenly begin during a film adaptation of Nutcracker. More surprising, it was obvious to me that the violinist here was better than any recording (ever made, probably) of the Sleeping Beauty ballet. My precise thoughts were, "This playing is as good as William Preucil...I guess violinists are getting better because I thought only he was this good!" I waited through the end credits, because I had to know the name of this violinist whose playing is equal to my memory of William Preucil. I had to smile when the end credits said, "William Preucil, concertmaster." Not surprisingly, William Preucil is now concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra. There is nobody like him on the planet and all I can say is, if you are interested in violin playing at all, you cannot afford to pass up on this incredible opportunity to hear Mr. Preucil play and give "advice" on some great excerpts from the orchestral literature for violin. The man is a genius!
