Stunning Whitman's Sampler of Vivaldi Vocal Magic.......2005-04-06
Rising countertenor Philippe Jaroussky starts the program off with an almost religious-sounding lament as Zelim from "La verità in cimento", which he sings in a strikingly ethereal manner. But the women rule the roost in this recording. Mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožena makes clear why she is moving quickly to the major leagues by singing two magnificent arias from "Juditha triumphans", "Veni, veni, me sequere fida", caressed by a clarinet-like instrument called a chalumeau, and "Agitata infio flatu", where she captures the sweeping fury of her character with stunning flourish. Contralto Sara Mingardo is another stand-out with her double-dip, full-throated voice dodging the aggressive strings on Licida's aria from "L'Olimpiade", "Gemo in un punto e fremo," and expertly riding the dramatic playing of Ensemble Matheus on Melindo's aria from "La verità in cimento", "Mivui trader, lo so". If not quite in the league of Kožena and Mingardo, soprano Roberta Invernizzi and contralto Sonia Prina acquit themselves admirably with an aria each and especially when they perform the striking duetto of Megacle and Aristea from "L'Olimpiade", "Ne'giorni tuoi felici". There is also an impressive quintetto from "La verità in cimento", "Anima mia, mio ben", which for maximum dramatic impact emphasizes the disparate voices of Jaroussky, Mingardo, tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson, mezzo-soprano Guillemette Laurens and contralto Nathalie Stutzmann. The disc ends appropriately with a beautiful choral piece, "O quam vaga, venusta, o quam decora" from "Juditha triumphans" with the Coro Giovanile dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, led by soprano Marina Comparato.
Rarely has a compilation disc sounded so seamless and without the additional burden of carrying different story contexts. Aurally it sounds like one consolidated piece, and credit needs to go to music directors Alessandro De Marchi, Rinaldo Alessandrini and Jean-Christophe Spinosi, who conducted the originally presented operas. Strongly recommended especially for neophytes to Vivaldi's operas like myself.
A Treasure Trove of Vivaldi Opera Arias and Ensembles.......2004-10-02
It would be impossible to comment about all sixteen selections here, but I would want to single out Magdalena Kozena's delectable performance of 'Veni, me sequere fida' from 'Juditha triumphans,' with the luscious solo contribution of an unnamed player of the chalumeau (an ancestor of the modern clarinet). [By the way, 'Juditha triumphans' is actually a dramatic oratorio, but it has sometimes been staged as an opera.] Also outstanding is the dramatic 'Gemo in un punto e fremo' from 'L'Olimpiade,' sung by one of today's stellar contraltos, Sara Mingardo.
Finally, I could not end this note without commenting on the fabulous quintet from 'La verità in cimento' entitled 'Anima mia, mio ben.' There is no question that Vivaldi must have been working with both musically and dramatically superb singers for whom he wrote this. This performance, featuring Rolfe Johnson, Laurens, Stutzmann, Jaroussky and Mingardo, is moving. And it is followed by a simply stunning performance, by Sara Mingardo, of Melindo's aria, 'Mi vuoi tradir, lo so' from the same opera. Mingardo's coloratura is absolutely spot on. (Think of Marilyn Horne and you'll have an idea of what this young Italian contralto sounds like.)
I strongly suspect this release will have value for those who want to dip their toes into the Vivaldian operatic waters. Every single selection is well-done, and it certainly gives an idea of Vivaldi's theatrical output, something that we've tended to neglect in favor of his sacred and instrumental music up to now.
Strongly recommended.

Ours is an age happily rich in lyric mezzo-sopranos who can handle the challenges of the coloratura repertoire of Rossini and Mozart. One of the most exciting is Bulgarian mezzo Vesselina Kasarova, who combines beauty of voice, intelligence of interpretation, and dramatic conviction in one very talented package. Here she is in her element, as a passionate Dorabella, an ardent Idamante, and--making a good case for a mezzo in roles usually given to a soubrette--a very sexy Zerlina, among others. The instrumental-only interludes weren't really necessary, but at least they fit in with the rest of the album. --Sarah Bryan MillerCustomer Reviews:
Vividly Mozart.......2006-05-11
Anyway, there is never any doubt what the essence of each aria is... what the character she is portraying is feeling. She seems more concern with communicating the characters' motivations than sounding beautiful. I love that... others who enjoy technically flawless (even at the expense of drama) singing may not like it. This singer is very dramatically involve and doesn't make good "relaxing background music."
She is especially great with the castrato arias from Mitridate, Idomeneo, and La clemenza di Tito (both as Sesto and as Vitellia!). What wicked mania in Farnace's scornful laugh in 'Venga pur'! The coldness of her second pass at "L'ira sua mi rendera" sends chill down my spine. And Farnace's real reversal and penitent is heard in his 'Gia dagli il velo'. To say that her Zerlina is sensual is an understatement! And her Sesto's 'Deh, per questo istante solo' is so emotionally revealing. Beautiful pianissimo contrasted by blasted forte that would move the stoniest heart! She is one of the best Sesto ever on stage (both vocally and theatrically), but her 'Non piu di fiori' is so marvellously done that I dream of hearing her take on Vitellia (She does have the high D...as a direct and lingering hit on it is caught on tape in her Rossini Arias & Duets CD). But perhaps not... an instrument like this should be protected from such treacherous tessitura. Better not kill the goose who lays golden eggs.
I'd never expect such a forcefully pinging top from a deep mezzo (amazing chest register...and just about the most agile coloratura voice around.. she sings ALL the notes!). This gal is a force of nature! Her closing concert aria 'Io ti lascio' is a study in legato singing, too. And regardless of the libretto (Pensa che a te non lice il ricordarsi di me), this is one singer you'd find very hard to not remember.
The orchestra is conducted superbly by Sir Colin Davis. The pace always seem just right and he is just as attentive to the musical nuances as his mezzo is. A great team! I only wish she had included a few duets as well... in place of the 2 orchestral interludes from Idomeneo and La clemenza di Tito

Maria Bayo vuelve a grabar cancion española........2003-09-18
Exito asegurado, seguro.

THE REAL DEAL, UPDATED AND SLIGHTLY "TWISTED".......2005-06-03
And, as a big bonus, you have the wonderful, special musical sense and direction of the great bandleader, Renzo Arbore. An extra big bonus is the fact that Mr. Arbore has assembled real musicians and singers, quite a large and significant group, at that. This collection was not made "on the cheap," as many other recent sets of Neapolitan music. [The GOLD OF NAPLES series comes to mind here. And while that series has its merits, it does feature mostly synthesized instruments, which doesn't completely do justice to Neapolitan music.] Here, you're getting the fully-loaded treatment. An extra, extra bonus is getting a fresh [and refreshing] twist with each of the songs...a twist which shows obvious reverence for the songs, but that updates tempos and textures, with absolutely delightful, and in some cases, stunning results.
CAUTION: You may want to chuck your other Neapolitan music after one listen to this fantastic set. AND, as another reviewer noted, this is not Italian-Americans mangling the language. [No disrespect intended to Connie Francis, who mostly did a good job on her Italian!]
HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION FOR FANS OF NEAPOLITAN MUSIC, LOVERS OF ROMANTIC ITALIAN TUNES (though this collection is so much more than that), AND LOVERS OF GREAT MUSICIANSHIP AND MELODY.

Juan Bautista Jose Cabanilles (1644 - 1712) was a composer and principal organist (from 1666) at Valencia Cathedral, Spain. In 1668 he was ordained as a priest but he kept his positon as principal organist at the Valencian cathedral for more than 40 years. Cabanilles works for organ are the culmination of previous trends in Spanish organ composition, and at the same time they open new pathways for composers who followed him. Cabanilles was the last of the Spanish mystic organists, and we can find within his works the germ of the new musical form: the Sonata. He was certainly the greatest of the Valencian composers of organ music, and together with Correa de Araujo the most important organist of the 17th Spanish Musical Century.

Frederica von Stade Sings Mozart & Rossini Arias [Hybrid SACD]

Wonderful, But ..........2005-08-20
Frederica von Stade was thirty when she recorded these Mozart and Rossini arias and the sound of her voice is simply lovely. I've always adored her sound even when I was aware that her technique, particularly in coloratura, was a little deficient. Her 'Una voce poco fa,' for instance, is beautiful sounding but doesn't have the kind of vocal fireworks we've come to expect from coloratura mezzos who have come on the scene since the 1970s. Still, her silvery, 'smile in the voice' sound is endearing here and elsewhere in these arias. She does better in the slower, more lyrical passages. Her pearlescent pianissimo must be heard to be appreciated. 'Nacqui all'affanno' from Rossini's 'Cenerentola' is delicious even with its sometimes approximate fioriture. The recorded sound itself is exemplary. One can hear clearly the orchestra (the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Edo de Waart) behind and below her. At times, though, her voice almost disappears into the orchestral sound mass. This happens, for instance, in the soft beginning of Desdemona's 'Willow Song' ('Assisa a' piè d'un salice' from Rossini's 'Otello').
Almost no one in her era commanded pants roles quite the way von Stade did. Her slim figure and believable acting made her an adorable Cherubino, and I am completely satisfied with her 'Non sò piu' and 'Voi, che sapete.' I don't recall whether she ever sang Sexto in 'La clemenza di Tito' (or Vitellia, for that matter) but the two arias of those two characters are also quite satisfying for their acting with the voice. As for Zerlina's 'Vedrai, carino,' I've rarely heard it so well done.
So there are pluses and minuses in this issue, but the pluses outweigh the minuses and this CD makes for a mostly satisfying experience.

Wonderful singing, fully characterized.......2000-05-12
In fact, it is Gens' sense of drama and attention to character, situation, and text, which sets this disc on a higher level than that of other fine Mozart aria recitals. Gens inhabits each character, so that her Vitellia is mature, weary, and resigned, while her Sesto is noble, impetuous, and highly earnest. She differentiates Cherubino from the Countess, Zerlina from Donna Elvira, while sounding vocally "right" for each. Listen to Sesto's "Deh, per queste istante" and then the following "Batti, batti," and see if you don't for a moment wonder if two different singers recorded the arias.
For those already familiar with the work of Mme. Gens, this recital is self-recommending. For those who have yet to discover her artistry, I urge you to purchase this recording and succumb to the considerable charms of one of the finest Mozart sopranos singing today.

A real gem on a great recording........2007-02-27
I bought this together with Ms. Bartoli's "Arie Antique". I love both discs to death.
Ms. von Otter has a very different timbre from Ms. Bartoli. However, in terms of singing, both artists were at their absolute peak in those two discs.
My favorite song on this disc, Gluck's 'Oh, del mio dolce ardor bramato oggetto', though also an Italian 'antique' composition, was NOT on Ms. Bartoli's disc. Ms. von Otter sung it with such soul and voice that I really wonder (increasing more so these days) if Ms. Bartoli could be as good!
I heard both their 'Voi che sapete', and must say that I preferred von Otter's, though Bartoli gave an almost equally good interpretation in her own Mozart album.
Having reacquired this lost album recently, I would add that Ms. von Otter's interpretations in the rarer Mozart operatic works are a real wonder. Compared with Ms. Fleming's Mozart album wherein contained a number of Mozart's rare works, the singing of Anne Sofie von Otter clearly is of a much more convincing standard. As the singer herself puts it: 'On passionate women and moustaches', undoubtedly this disc demonstrates the full musical capability of hers in both genres to a fascinatingly high standard.
