This is the way to hear what one of Cuba's top bands can do--live. Under the leadership of bass player Juan Formell, it's a nonstop party, recorded in 1996 on their home turf, in Havana's Salon Rosado de la Tropical, before a decidedly partisan crowd. And the band certainly rocks the house, with the closer, "Herbiero, Ven" especially potent, a sweatfest propelled by the irresistible beat of timba. While some of the material had surfaced elsewhere, obtaining it in the U.S. had been well-nigh impossible--and these explosive versions are close to definitive in any case. The excitement captured here helped pave the way for the likes of Cubanismo!, who still can't match the energy of Los Van Van. The band's songo style, still rooted in the traditional changui form, is like an electrical jolt, and the nostalgia of Buena Vista Social Club seems very old. Quizás el mejor disco en la historia de los Van Van........2000-03-16

Al músico que quiera adentrarse en la música de los Van Van, "Lo Ultimo en Vivo" es sin duda el mejor anfitrión. Este disco logra combinar lo que nunca yo había podido escuchar antes, canciones sumamente explosivas con un sabor de melancolía. En esta contradicción estriba la belleza de este disco el cual deja demostrado que indiscutiblemente, Los Van Van son la mejor orquesta latinoamericana de fusión cubana en donde se mezcla lo mejor del son y la charanga. "Lo Ultimo en Vivo" no es salsa, es mas bien la fusión extraordinaria de ritmos los cuales fueron madre de esa mezcla que hoy conocemos como salsa. Como dice Mayito (uno de los cantantes) "cuidao' con llamarle salsa, te puedes equivocar". Derick Ramos

Creo que Los Van Van y Juan Formell son unos excelentes músicos, pocas veces se escucha algo igual, al menos yo no la había escuchado desde Larry Harlow en los ochentas.

Salsa, that is Cuba! I feel proud of the legend of music that Cuba had offered to the world throughout the years. There is no better Salsa or Son than Cuban Salsa and Son, Because Cuba is the Mother of Son and Salsa. Los Van Van are a perfect example of this.

Ultimate!!.......1998-07-29

The only thing I can think of better than this, is to see Los Van Van live. If you can not see them live buy this. The energy of the band performing live is captured well on this CD.
