Canciones como El Leon y Desapariciones son realidades de America Latina traducidas por LFC a un idioma entre ska, reggae, funk, etc. para que se le peguen hasta a aquellos que no las quieran oir. Son canciones que nos hacen pensar y aparte tienen un ritmazo, clasico de los fabulosos! Hay algunas piezas ochenteras que no estan tan tan buenas pero se les perdona porque el 90% del disco es excelente.

Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01

This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.

The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.

The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.

Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.

Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.

Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

Very Interesting.......2005-01-18

This very interesting CD was produced by the Mexico City Government's Department of Cultural Affairs and is distributed by a major label (BMG). There several ways to approach this review:

If you are a fan of Eugenia Leon, you will probably be delighted with this ground breaking work...in which the grassroots diva makes a "cross-over" into a semi-operatic style of singing that evokes Cecilia Bartoli's mezzo instrument. For this recording she uncovered some interesting registers of her voice that she now smoothly incorporates into her traditional dark & sultry chest-voice.

If you are a music fan & you like string quartets, the impeccable exectution on the Cello & Violins, plus some rarely recorded 1920's songs such the melancholic "Tierra de Mis Amores", Agustin Lara's endearing "Casita Blanca", the haunting "La Ixhuahteca" & the Baroqueish melody of "Santiago" will make this a very interesting acquisition.

One last note, half of the arrangements were written by Arturo Marquez (Danzon No. 2), who along with Eugenio Toussaint leads the charge in Mexico's contemporary "Classical" music movement. Both are accomplished composers, arrangers, conducters & performers.

En los últimos años la música popular tradicional mexicana ha ido desapareciendo del mercado discográfico. Esta grabación es un evento realmente importante en varios niveles: Primero, ofrece un repertorio de canciones que se inscriben en una época y en una situación cultural bien definida; la consolidación de la República como tal. Segundo, este repertorio está ejecutado con el mayor de los cuidados musicales posibles, lo que es en sí un logro mayor de la grabación: el cuartelo latinoamericano es excelente, y los arreglos son de una intimidad y belleza realmente impresionantes; y finalmente Eugenia León, que parece estar en una evolución constante y en ininterrumpido ascenso, y quien haya escuchado sus primeras grabaciones podrá constatarlo. Evidentemente que el repertorio y el estilo nos hace recordad a Tehua... y no me imagino a Eugenia León como su sucesora, pero sí como vehementemente inspirada en el trabajo de esa gran cantante.

En resumen, este es un disco indispensable para quien guste de la canción fina mexicana.

Bravo, Maestro Fennell!.......2001-03-19

For the past 50 or so years, Frederick Fennell has probably been the "Best Friend" that collectors of band music in general and marches specifically could ever have imagined! Starting with monaural LP's in the 1950's, such as Marches For Twirling and British Band Classics with the incomparable Eastman Wind Ensemble, which he himself founded, Dr. Fennell has consistently set the standard for march recordings, and has been a tireless champion for wind ensembles as a serious musical medium.

This CD contiues that tradition, with a selection of marches that runs the gamut of styles that define a "march" (military/patriotic, circus, concert, collegiate, Spanish, Italian, etc.)The musicianship on this album is truly outstanding, and Maestro Fennell's understanding of tempo and attention to every detail are once again amply demonstrated. Also, although he has always provided a wealth of information concerning the marches themselves and their composers, I believe this marks the first time that he has also included information in his notes about his personal involvement in each number, a very nice touch! A few thoughts about some of the marches:

March of the Steel Men - This is a great demonstration of the genius of Harry Alford, who bridged the gap between the traditional march style and the "modern" march, which typically contains only two strains and much more complex harmonies, at which Alford excelled, both in his own compositions and in his numerous arrangements.

The Gladiator, El Abanico and Sol y Sombra - Interestingly, Dr. Fennell plays by far the slowest-tempoed version of The Gladiator I have heard, Sousa's first "hit", that I have heard, as if it were a Spanish paso doble, which, of course, it does resemble in style. On the other hand, El Abanico is taken at the fastest pace I know of, apparently being the very rare Spanish march meant to be played as a "quickstep". And Sol y Sombra is finally played as a traditional paso doble (two-step), suitable for the bull ring.

The Footlifter and Men of Ohio - Two fast-paced examples of why "Uncle" Henry Fillmore is considered by many march aficionados to be second only to Sousa as a march writer.

The Northern Pines - One of Sousa's last compositions demonstrates that the March King had not lost his touch for martial melodies over his long career, since this would certainly rank among his best.

Again, this album is among Frederick Fennell's finest recordings, and hopefully will not be his last march recording, but would be a fitting tribute to his long career if it is.

If you like marches you have to love this recording. Fennell is truly the march recording king of our time and this could very well be his signature recording. The liner notes are a fascinating personal insight as to Fennell's personal attachment and involvement with each march. As an avid collector of march recordings, the arrangements on this disc are outstanding as are the phonics. The disc brings me back to my high school band days and maraches like Footlifter and Band of America just jump off the disc. A truly wonderful piece of Americana by a band legend
