Cape Verde is famous for its Afro-Portuguese-inlfluenced music genres: the haunting guitar-based morna and the percussive Cuba- and Brazil-influenced coladeras. Ever since her "discovery" in 1998, vocalist Cesaria Evora, the so-called "Barefoot Diva," has been her country's greatest musical ambassor. This recording features Evora interpreting old and new Cape Verdean and Brazilian songs. Under the expert leadership of her musical director, pianist Fernado Andrade, Evora's rich contralto is beautifully supported by guitars, the ukelele-like cavaquinho, mandolin, strings, clarinet, and percussion. Like Billie Holiday, Evora can inject a lyric with pathos and passion. That rare gift is heard on the mid-tempo "Isoloada" ("Isolated"), an aching song about a beautiful, imprisoned mulatto girl, written by Evora's poet uncle, B. Leza, and the equally heart-wrenching "Amdjer De Nos Terra" ("Woman of Our Land"), which tells of the suffering of Cape Verdean women. The upbeat tracks include the sax-laced, vocal choired, "Pomba" ("The Dove")and Luis Morais's "Velocidade" ("Velocity"). "Jardim Prometido" ("Promised Garden") is a nice take on the American standard "Greenfields" by another Cape Verdean composer, Teofilo Chantre. The title track features Evora in pan-African fellowship with musicians from Cuba, Brazil, and Madagascar, showing that the music of her homeland has something for everyone. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

International star.......2007-01-09
I have loved a lot of voices from far away Countries for long time:Brazil,Portugal,Senegal;they were stars nationally and internationnally.
Recently I bought Cesaria Evora under the recommendation of a cuban Doctor;I hoped to find some of the rythm I used to swing on in my head.
It did not happen for me!
Cesaria will always be 5 stars!.......2005-07-27
This was the second CD I bought and got a 3rd one within less than a month. I don't believe it is possible to say which is her best disc, or song. The songs bring all of Cape Verde's culture and the mellodies certainly garantee very peacefull and relaxing moments. There's much more to explore and if you ask me I would say, buy all the CD's!
My Goodness Cesaria..........2004-08-06
Oh how I love Cesaria! As always when I visit Barnes & Nobles I go to the International music section. As my eyes scanned the wide selection of world music, Cesaria's face stood out. This woman reminds of Celia Cruz -love her too, may her soul rest in peace -I said to myself and I bet she's a wonderful singer. All I needed to hear was the song "Sodade" and that was it. I fell in love with Cesaria's music. Like Celia Cruz she has the voice that captures your attention and sends chills down your spine - so electrifying it's beautiful! I currently one three of Cesaria's albums - THe Very Best of, Cabo Verde, and Voz D'Amor! THe next albums I want to get are Sao Vincente di Longe and Cesaria!
For the past few months I've been listening to Cesaria's music more than anyone elses! I can relate so much to the lyrics of her music and the style being that I'm from the Caribbean. I feel as if I've also lived the Capeverdian experience! I would like to visit someday! Viva Cesaria a reina da morna!
Voz d'Amor, a deep and hanging album.......2004-01-08
Always equalizes with herself, Cesaria Evora did not lose anything of her voice. This new album proves how much her repertory is single. A team of musicians except par. Lyrics and compositions quite elaborate. The ambassadress of the music of Cape Verde does not have the gift to weary. But well rather to attract more people in search of "ever heard". Of the 14 titles of this disc, one cannot have preference. Let you go and you will not stop listening to the disc. So much it is deep and hanging.
Gorgeous!.......2003-10-17
I picked this CD up at a local bookstore while actually browsing the classical section. The moment I heard this voice, I was mesmerized! Subtle and passionate, extremely well projected, this voice goes straight to the listener's heart. In classical terms, such a voice can safely be called a contralto, a rare breed, but it's not artificially dark and the singer does not push it at all; she is making the voice gently float and "wrap" the audience.
The program encompasses some Brazilian songs along with many songs from Evora's native Cape Verde. The latter is a lovely fusion of Cuban, African, and Portuguese influences along with something extremely moving and unique that this listener can't quite explain, but one will immediately identify it once familiar with it. The selections nicely move from mournful to joyous, thereby eliminating any "sameness" that's so common with "native music" recordings. They also showcase Evora's marvelous talent to convey a wide range of feelings with a few simple musical gestures. Interestingly, the fact that the recording was made in Paris somehow contributed as well -- the music does carry a vague "chansonette" feel. The supporting musicians are brilliant, they're all literally on the same page with Evora with every expression.
The booklet includes the lyrics and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the poetry. It's all of the highest caliber. B. Leza's wonderful verse has to gain wider exposure.
Do not delay getting this album, for it will bring you over an hour of pure unadulterated musical bliss.

Hector's all-time classic debut album........2006-12-17
While never released as a single, Hector's truly superb cover version of the classic bolero "Tus Ojos" (previously recorded by both Santos Colon and Vicentico Valdes) is this album's crown jewel. In my opinion, said song is Hector's all-time best vocal performance--so much so, in fact, that I'd say it was nothing short of shameful that it wasn't issued as a single. "El Todopoderoso", "Rompe Saraguey" and "Mi Gente" were the big hits --which deservedly became classics--but "Tus Ojos" remains beautiful beyond compare.
Lavoe's first solo album!!!.......2006-06-09
Here is the remastered edition of Hector Lavoe's first album. This edition includes the original cover art and an essay. It does sound much better than the previous Fania edition and it's cheaper too!
Produced by Willie Colon and featuring Mark Dimond on piano, Nicky Marrero on timbales and Ray Maldonado on trumpet, this is a New York salsa classic (1975)from beginning to end. No weak or filler tunes here.

If Antonio Carlos Jobim is the compositional force behind the bossa nova, and jazz tenor saxophonist Stan Getz is its most eloquent American interpreter, then Joao Gilberto is its angelic voice. Since 1958, Gilberto's haunted and lyrical Brazilian-born Afro-Indian Portuguese has seduced generations with its sophistication and seductiveness. This CD, produced by Caetano Veloso, is Gilberto's first studio recording in nearly 10 years and it's well worth the wait. With just his voice and his guitar, Gilberto fills the heart and head with enough musical force to equal a symphony orchestra. Of course, the classic bossa nova titles "Desafinado," "Voce vai Ver," and "Chega de Saudade" retain their pathos and power. Gilberto christens Veloso's "Desde que Samba e Samba" and "Coracao Vagabundo;" Ernesto Lecuona's "Eclipse" and Gilberto Gil's "Eu Vim da Bahia" with the same soulful sounds that made him a legend for 40 years. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Admirably Straight-Forward.......2006-06-18
This is a simple, yet intimate album. It sounds like what you might hear had you Joao Gilberto over for drinks and got him to play his guitar for a half hour. I am not very familiar with Joao Gilberto's music (I am better acquainted with his ex-wife Astrud's). Mostly what I know of him is from the classic Getz-Gilberto album. But if this album is any indication, Joao's talent has not diminished since the 1960s. He made a wise artistic choice here and recorded these tracks with just him on guitar and singing. No drums, sythns, or strings. Most of the songs I was unfamiliar with, other than the classic Desafinado. Perhaps great musicians of the 1960s can never really recapture the sound they had perfected back then, whether it be Joao Gilberto, Bob Dylan, or Paul McCartney. What does come through here is the charm of a great musician standing alone. This is not a long album or an ambitious one, but it is an honest one, and one that you will not tire of listening to. A good choice for bossa nova fans.
extraordinary.......2005-12-26
This CD is an extraordinary experience of one voice with one guitar. For 40 years I've waited for the perfect Joao Gilberto album, and finally here it is.
The essentials.......2004-04-05
I've taken a discovery dive into the wonderworld of Brazilian music, which was mostly unbeknowst to me, even being Brazilian myself. From all the different genres and musical movements I've researched, bossa nova is by far the most inspired. It was the most creative ever made in this country and I think nothing better will ever be done. To listen to any given bossa nova song is to look at a snapshot of the Brazilian soul. And this was the first bossa nova record I bought. I'm looking forward to buying Gilberto's earlier, orchestrated work, part of which I've listened to on the internet, but for me, this is really what his music is all about: voice, guitar, and silence. Any bossa nova fan should buy this. By the way, I strongly disagree with those who call bossa nova "chill out" music. The interpretation of "Coração Vagabundo" in this album is one of the most angsty, sad songs I've ever heard, and "Chega de Saudade" is a wonderful bittersweet tale and I love João Gilberto's rendition of it, especially the guitar rythm.
Zen Baiano's voice will never be the same again..........2004-03-30
Joao has remained the same romantic crooner that he was 40 years ago, but his voice is not the same... it's natural it won't ever be the same, our beloved Zen Baiano is getting on... The arrangements somewhat lack expression, they produce and impression of drowsiness. However I have to admit such arrangement is quite good in Eclipse (perhaps the best song of the disk, it's gently swinging like the reflection of the moon on the water). I also enjoyed Da Cor do Pecado, a lovely, sensual tune... But the overall impression is that his best times are gone.
Joao rocks!.......2004-03-03
But seriously, this is a really nice record. It's only thirty minutes long, but it's just about the right length. I hope that when I'm in my late 60s my meager abilities are half as in tact as Gilberto's considerable ones have remained, fully; his voice and guitar playing are strong, persuasive, and soothing. One of my family members remarked that this is good sleeping music, and, yeah, I guess so, but I get pretty inspired by the stuff. For me it's an eye-opener, something to get exciting about. But maybe I'm just easily excitable. Give yourself a gift and try out Joao Gilberto (and Jobim and Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento . . .).

este es su mejor disco.
este, Luz, Lilás y Seduzir son discos imperdibles
A MUST HAVE!!! Que Beleza.......2003-11-02
What makes a great Brazilian album? Great grooves, beautiful melodies, interesting compositions, diversity and excellent playing. This collection of Djavan songs has all of these qualities. Like much of MPB, the happy melodies and up-beat rhythms are complimented by excellent lyrics often about sadness and an out-of-reach love. Ironically, a listen to this will lift even the most macabre of moods. This is one of the few albums that I can listen to all the way through more then once and falls into my top ten of Brazilian albums.

One of the most important and magical song cycles in contemporary music, Ancient Voices of Children, is the setting of a series of haunting texts by the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca for mezzo-soprano, boy soprano, and chamber orchestra. The piece made a huge impression on audiences at its initial performances. Indeed, this recording became something of a cult phenomenon, much like the Górecki Third Symphony today; and if you weren't around for the initial discovery, now's your chance. Music for a Summer Evening uses essentially the same forces as Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, and creates an evocative, glittering nightscape. Great stuff.--David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
An Avant-Garde Must Get.......2003-05-07
I remember a time when I was at a flea market and was looking through some vinyl records (possibly about the time before I got my first CD player). One particular record got my attention. The cover sort of resembles a newspaper article with a picture insert of a nebula. What got my attention were "Makrokosmos" and that it was a Nonesuch record. I've heard a few Nonesuch records and notice how different the music tends to be. So I thought I buy it for $1 (if I recall correctly). When I listened to it at home, I knew I made a good choice. It had the strange 20th century music - rather atonal. It's a good thing the vinyl record was in good shape, especially when it came to the very quiet parts. I have that record today, still in good shape.
About a few years after buying the vinyl record, I was looking through some CDs in a store (after I got my first CD player). I've found the Nonesuch CD that had "Ancient Voices of Children" AND "Music for a Summer Evening (Makrokosmos III)." I didn't buy it because I wanted to get it on sale. Well, time passed. One day, I saw one up for bid on eBay. I think I was the only bidder on it. The jewel case may have a few scratches (which I wouldn't worry about) but the CD itself was like new.
I'm glad that I got it on CD. I could listen to the music without any clicks or pops you would hear from a vinyl LP (especially since the music gets very quiet at times). Although you wouldn't get the "warm analog sound" you get from the vinyl. Nevertheless, it does sound very good considering that it's AAD. Whoever likes avant-garde music may want to get this.
One thing I want to let you know. Whoever did the tracking on the CD must've misjudged about the beginnings of "Myth" and "Music of the Starry Night." "Myth" begins at index 8:02 on track 9. Tracks 10 and 11 are the last movement, "Music of the Starry Night." Take note of that when listening to this CD.
Crumb in poetic and eerilie beautiful mood.......2002-06-17
Those who know US composer George Crumb mainly from the terrifying musings of 'Black Angels' (made semi-famous by the Kronos Quartet) will probably be surprised by the haunting beauty of 'Ancient Voices'. Based on texts from Lorca, the rich but sparing instrumentation is complemented by evocative, floating soprano - sometimes sung into the piano to create an eerie, mystical ambient. My first exposure was at London's Roundhouse in 1976, where even the background rumbling of trains couldn't sublimate the extraordinary lure of Crumb's sound world. Truly gorgeous and thoughtfully composed.
Exceptional.......2002-06-15
This disc is flawless. The caliber of music making is extremely high, and the pieces themselves are among Crumb's absolute finest.
Music for a Summer Evening is, perhaps, the lesser signifigant work of the two presented here. Even so, it is an astounding presentation of of Crumb's effective use of extended tequniques, and the ability of his atmospheric writing to stir up strong emotions. Here, Crumb has significantly built on the two pianos/percussion format that Bartok made famous in his Sonata.
Ancient Voices of Children is an important song cycle in the post-WWII repertoire. His extended singing tecniques are used to great effect, and the haunting, mystical effects that he cojours within the limited instrumentation are amazing.
Crumb is one a handfull of composers that can write atmospheric music so well, and pull off these avant-garde tecniques so usefully. If you do not know his music, start with this disc; it's breathtaking.
Just Listen.......2002-06-08
I just recently reaquainted myself with this work after about thirty years. Ancient voice of Children retains all of the mystery and magic that I heard when I first encountered the piece at the age of 11. The work resembles not so much a conventional piece of music as a mystic ceremony. Set to fragments from the poetry of Frederico Garcia Lorca, the music captures the magical nature of the poet's verse. The unusual instrumental effects are haunting. Amoung my favorite is the quotation from Bist Du Bei Mir played on a toy piano as a haunting elegy for a dead child. The work builds in it's last section to a shattering climax.
The perfomance is quintessential. Jan DeGaetani was marvelous in this style of music and is sorely missed as a performer. The ensemble is spirited and very precise. The only thing that you miss on this CD is the visual choreography of a live performance, which is hypnotizing.
Macrocosmos III was a new piece to me and is every bit as haunting as other Crumb music. The ending is luminous...en eternal spinning out of music in the Lydian scale.
Be aware, this is avant garde music, though I feel it is quite assessible to those who listen without preconceptions. It is certainly more assessible than Elliot Carter or Boulez. It is not Part or Gorecki...but then not everything has to be. For me, this is not about style but about substance. Crumb moves me every bit as much as more assessible composers. You just have to listen with different ears, that's all.
What is the Opposite of Music? Listen to this and find out!.......2001-11-02
Here I am, the skeleton at the feast of 5* reviews proving again the old adage that "One man's meat is another man's poison". I hardly believe that even a small percentage of people (let's leave aside Professors of Avant-Garde Music for the time being) would be able to listen to, let alone enjoy, more than a few minutes of this music (I use that term in it's very loosest definition). It is ridiculous, therefore, that this should have a preponderance of 5* reviews. Consequently I believe that I am doing a service by standing up and pointing out "bad" music just as I do in applauding "good" music.
I came at this CD - which I bought thanks to some of the aforementioned 5* which I was foolish enough to believe - with the expectation that it would be modern, avant-garde and probably rather ineffable initially. I am prepared for this, believing that often the best music is not instantly grasped and needs careful auditioning. When I listened to it, however, I found that my expectations were not nearly extreme enough. This is music trying so hard to establish its originality that it appears to have progressed well beyond my definition of what music actually is. It is music as art, as a statement and not music to listen to - think about this a little! Hence my opening line - this is the opposite of music.
Instead, this production seems to be comprised of irrelevant and inconsequential noises, none of them musical. To save you the money, and more importantly the time, I will precis this CD for you:
A womans shriek followed by about 20 seconds of silence.
A sound rather like a large rodent being let loose inside a piano.
Some blocks of wood being banged together.
More shrieking.
More silence.
A voice making a strange sound as if copying a phone ringing.
More silence.
More wood being banged together.
More silence
Etcetera, etcetera, ad nauseam
At some point in this avant-garde nonsense somebody is going to blow the whistle and irreverently point out that the "Emperors New Clothes" do not actually exist. In the service of music, as opposed to "art", I am prepared to do the pointing! This production is nothing more that a deeply unmusical joke against those pseudo-intellectuals who completely miss the concepts of humanity and accessibility in music. "Composers" who write this stuff do so as to hide their lack of musical creativity behind an intellectual argument. Don't believe the hype, leave this one on the shelf!
For those aesthetes and enthusiasts who are intent on heading down a progressive route of "classical" music which yet retains any humanity and sympathy, Part and Gorecki appear to have been able to create music of originality and humanity, proving that it can be done.
Leave this production to those pseuds more interested in wallowing in their own misconceived esoteric intellectualism than in actually enjoying music.

Customer Reviews:
Wow ! Rinaldi is now my favorite Latin female vocalist........2001-08-08
This was my first Susana Rinaldi disk. I had been sampling the work of contemporary tango vocalists, including rock-crossover star Adriana Varela. Daniel Saindon from Montréal recommended Susana Rinaldi to me. All it took was listening to an MP3 file, and I was hooked. This is the music of the city of Buenos Aires - the music of Troilo, Gardel, Expósito, Tinelli, and Coblán. What impressed me most was the range of the voice and the emotion it is able to convey. This is not somebody whose voice is distorted by being right next to a microphone. There is certain richness to the voice. It is the expression of the voice that brings life to the sense of the city of Buenos Aires.
I recently discussed Rinaldi with an Argentine friend who lives in Washington DC. She told me all about Susana Rinaldi. Her training included music school where she was trained as a chamber music singer. She began her career as an actress, and has appeared in numerous stage, television and movie productions. It was only in 1966 that she began singing professionally. Since then, she has had great international appeal. I was surprised to learn that her discography includes 22 titles. She has received many international awards, and in 1969 shared the "Talento de Oro" award with Astor Piazzola. Her life has included a period of exile in which she left Argentina when it was dominated by a military junta.
When listening to music, we pay attention not just to the sound of the singer and the accompanying orchestra, but also to the lyrics of what is being sung. Her lyrics have a style, grace and romanticism. It is not the tango of the arrabales and the cuchilleros. The disk begins with Troilo's "Maria," which I would regard as a "show stopper" if it were in a Broadway play. She does a wonderful job with Carlos Gardel's "Soledad." If you have seen Sally Porter's movie "Tango Lesson," you are no doubt familiar with "Milonga Triste." When I heard Rinaldi's version of "Milonga Triste," my reaction was a simple "Wow!" The whole disk is like that. Although I regard this as a good disk for dancing, I would like to encourage my friends to take some time to sit down and enjoy this music. You will be delighted.
Susana Rinaldi, a precursor that still sounds contemporary.......2000-07-21
I am into Mercedes Sosa, and others that are traditionalists but whose uniqueness turns them into new, lasting artists. Rinaldi is a precursor of the contemporary ways of doing tango or Argentine folklore. I find her voice powerful, clear, and her expression well-owned. In her, the early dramatization of vocal expression that was to come to heights in the personality of people like Mercedes Sosa comes alive in a primitive manner. Not a bit of copied affectation in her style. A true pioneer. In my opinion, Rinaldi is a must for those who appreciate and collect the developmental links in Argentine music.
