3 out of 5 stars Plagued by bad sound quality.......2007-02-04

The main problem with this CD is that it comes up short in sound quality. While some songs sound great others sound as if recorded a very long time ago or being recorded in bad sound studios. This is absolutely unacceptable when Putumayo has such a wealth of similar titles with incredible quality. For me the best song was #5 because of this funky harp that is played excellently and thankfully the sound was good. I will have to recommend the Putumayo releases Afrolatino and Afro-latin Party before this one.

I really cannot understand the 5 star reviews below in light of the sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars A modern take on a long tradition..........2001-12-14

A fascinating mix of African and Cuban music... For centuries, Afro-Cuban rhythms has wafted back and forth over the Atlantic, inspiring the growth of Cuba's various musical styles, and in turn, the West African "rumba" music of the 1950s and '60s. This disc is fairly unique in that it collects hits by African artists who plays specifically "salsa" style music, sometimes singing in French or their local languages, sometimes mixing the style with lovely, lush African guitar work. This is a companion disc to "WORLD SALSA," an earlier collection of international salsa acts (from as far afield as Israel...) As interesting as that disc was, though, this one is superior -- the music is more powerful, and the pacing is more cohesive. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars it's magical.......2000-12-11

I have listened to this cd so many times, that, I swear on a stack of whatever is sacred to you, it's worn out and I'm buying another one on my little 1-click amazon thinger. If you want to experience the joy of music, if you want to leave the planet, if just for a half-hour you want to get up off your seat and dance, get this cd.

5 out of 5 stars The next movement in cuban music!.......2000-06-13

Afro-Cuban! So you have already purchased the Buena Vista Social Club, and Compay Segundo, and Omara, etc...Well what's next? How about something with a kick? How about some music that will get you on you feet and movin' on the dancefloor? Well, look no further....From the label that brought you Salsa Mundo (Salsa from around the world), Salsa Africa is finally here! Only the finest African artists (including Africando and Papa Wemba), make Salsa Africa sizzle with hot latin rhythms and powerful vocals. Just in time for summer, the time to dance, the time to celebrate, and the time to sweat. Salsa Africa offers all of this....and much more! Buy it!

Happy, bright, sparkling, brilliant: in all honesty, there simply aren't enough colorful adjectives to accurately describe the palpable, inherent joy in the music of Cuban master Ibrahim Ferrer. All the shades of the rainbow--and more--are showcased beautifully on Ay, Candela, a vivid, varried collection of classic tracks. The assembled songs span the 1960s, '70s, and early '80s, but they sound as fresh and vibrant as anything recorded in the last few years. Ferrer is a master of delivery, and he works wonderfully alongside the expert musicians and background vocalists. It makes for some great moments, particularly during the joyous "Mi Tonada Montuna," "Manana Me Voy Pa' Sibanicu" and the title track. Ferrer's best moment, however, comes during the stirring "Una Fuerza Immensa," a lush, captivating bolero that conjures images of swaying palm trees and slow-dancing couples. It's a standout amid an album of outstanding consistency. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars Great sample of ferrer's earlier work.......2005-09-09

If you're a fan of the great, recently departed Ibrahim Ferrer, you will find this album to be a interesting window into the work he did during the decades before he retired, before hooking up with the Buena Vista clan. If you're a more casual listener of Cuban music, I'd recommend sticking with Ferrer's more recent albums, as they are produced to better enhance the beauty of his voice.

It is important to note that the music on this cd was actually recorded from the 1960s to the 1980s, not in the Buena Vista era.

GREAT ARTIST ALL AROUND!
you will love it!

4 out of 5 stars Still not as great as Sonora Carruseles, but good.......2004-01-26

If you want the heavy and yet eloquent salsa, La Salsa la Traigo Yo, Con Todos los Hierros, both by Sonora Carruseles are better albums. Bonilla is a great musician, and his non-romantic and non-cheesy salsa is the salsa I prefer. I love the rumba, the salsa brava type. This is what this album is.

Sonora Carruseles, Fruko y Sus Tesos, and Edwin Bonilla... Buy their albums, their music are a cut above the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-09-05

Fantastic release from Edwin Bonilla. No filler material, just some great Salsa Dura with a decidedly cuban feel. Jesus Perez does a nice job on vocals (and arrangements!), and the tracks are sure to keep ya dancin the whole CD through. While its only his second solo salsa release, Mr. Bonilla is an impressively credentialed veteran percussionist, and it shows on this album!

While I'm not sure you can say Mr. Bonilla is the most popular Salsa artist in the world(could that comment have been biased by the fact that Mr. Bonilla is living and working in Miami? ;-)), I am sure he's getting plenty of play time everywhere!

5 out of 5 stars Best i've heard in quite some time..........2002-11-23

As someone who has listened, danced and even played Latin Music (I generally disdain the term "salsa" I consider "salsa" a condiment not a genre...but i digress...this album has begun to restore my faith in the future of latin music...this cd is "straight ahead" without regard to the pop music we hear co much of today...for those new yorkers out there...this is definitly "Corso", Hunt's Point Palace, and Colgate Garden's variety, knock your socks off music that revels in it's originality...this from someone who bought his first Palmieri LP in 1964...Azucar...and jammed at Orchard Beach (Section 9)....Tropicoro Club on Wednesdays, Colgate and the Hunt's Point Palace on Sunday's and the Corso on Saturdays...this is the real ...*....Ramon Pinero

5 out of 5 stars Heavy duty salsa ...........2002-06-25

5 out of 5 stars truly great choice.......2007-02-06

I am a great fan of cuban and colombian music, and was really surprised when I finally listened to Toto la Momposina.
Toto started her career very early singing colombian folk music, some of which is presented here in its original form, as a good example, the first track, "Dos de febrero" is an unadultered cumbia in its pre-comercial form, only drums and a capella voice, "El pescador", which became quite a popular song, is presented here in what I think is the original and the best interpretation, also as traditional cumbia.

Toto then enriched her style by making a research stage in Cuba, and integrating the structure and instruments of traditional cuban folk music into her own, great examples are "La sombra negra" and "Malanga", which follow the cuban son structure and are enriched by guitar and the "marimbola", a bass metal harp-like instrument which gives a deep impact. These two songs are really great.
The songs "Adios Fulana", and "dame la mano juancho" use the reed flutes called "gaitas", another typical component of the colombian folk style.

The last track, "la acabación" is a peculiar gift; the main drummer from Toto's group was trained in a sacred rithm used only during funerals, and taught only to very selected and skilled drummers. Here we can listen to it.

as interesting trivia, Toto la Momposina was invited by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, when he received the nobel price in literature, to play her music in stockholm, at the award ceremony.

5 out of 5 stars La candela viva.......2003-04-25

Toto la Momposina brings out the real and pure folklore of the north coast of Atlantic & Magdalena Region.
The african influence in the different types of drums will make you travel to remote regions where the night, candles, machete make you move their rithms echoes.
I truly enjoy the creativity of bringing the drums resonances in different stages and clearly differenciate it.
The poetry of the songs words are the small village people tails seating around the campfire enjoying each others companion and adventures of the day or a distant leyend.

5 out of 5 stars MAGIC.......1999-12-05

When the africans beated their drums and the native indigenous tribes added some melodies with their gaitas, a new kind of music was born in the beautiful caribbean coast of Colombia. Strong, pure, deep, poetic, vibrant and magic. This music is done with 3 elements: voices, percussion and gaita (native flute). Toto la momposina is the best and most representative singer of this kind of music, her voice is unique and powerful, and I consider this her best recording. A jewel of real world music.

5 out of 5 stars toto is making colombian music getting respected.......1999-10-06

she is one of the most amazing singers i have ever heard.strong voice, great music.i recommend toto to all the people that enjoys really good music.i also recommend toto`s carmelina album, released in 1996.she is from the atlantic coast of my country colombia.,and is one of my faves artist, with shakira, sade, george michael and others.thanks.gabriel.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, foot-stomping festival music from Columbia.......1999-08-27

A mixture of Cuban, Spanish, and African influences swirl through "La Candela Viva." The female vocalist is vibrant and fiery.

The track "El Pescador" alone is worth the price of the disc.

5 out of 5 stars Still waiting..........2002-02-05

I saw Adalberto Alvares y Su Son in the summer of 1999 in SummerStage at Central Park, New York. Although I grew up in Cali, Colombia listening to and dancing Salsa, I was amazed at what I was hearing. The music was perfect in every sence, and Iramis Galindo's voice was out of this world. I bought the CD on the spot thinking that it would not compare to the live music I had just heard; I was mistaken. I still listen to this CD regularly and never get tired of it. I went to Cali where noone had heard this songs, played them in a few parties, and always got a "who's that!" reaction. I also bought the previous album "Magistral" and loved it, it's a must-have. I come to this web site hoping that there's a new release by AA, but nothing yet. That's ok, I'll keep waiting.

5 out of 5 stars Salsa.......2002-01-12

Sigo prefiriendo la salsa hecha en Puerto Rico, pero debo reconocer la calidad de esta producción. "Una Mulata En La Habana", "Y No Me Da La Cuenta" y "911" son temas extraordinarios para bailar.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-10-13

I had listened to Adalberto Alvarez in various "collection" CDs and decided to buy this and the companion "Adalbérto Alvarez y su Són" based on the recommendations of the previous reviewers. I agree with the other write-ups, these are excellent and indeed make anybody want to dance - not really feasible at work but nonetheless.... I grew up in Cuba and have a large CD collection however, these two really shine. I particularly like "A Bailár El Toca Toca" on this one and the last selection on the other one ¿Y Qué Tu Quiéres Que Te Dén?, however there is hardly a bad cut in either.

5 out of 5 stars Ghawk.......2000-06-23

This is an excellent CD! Great breakdowns within the songs. Which I like when I dance because then you feel the "gusto" and the music takes you over!

5 out of 5 stars BEST TIMBA.......2000-04-20

Adalberto Alvarez, former member of Los Van Van, is by far the best Salsa performer in Cuba today. This album will keep you dancing all night long. The first cut has cool bosanova undertones and speaks of love affairs between turists and the Havana "Jineteras". The slow numbers bring you back to the mellow bitter-sweet nights filled with mojitos and cigars. It makes you wonder if he should have won the Grammy rather than his former band.

    5 out of 5 stars A Stand-out Album - BUY IT!.......2001-11-08

Fantastic performances on this album - every time I give it a listen, I find myself pausing whatever I'm doing for a few minutes to fully enjoy the track. The CD is very well produced and nicely balanced, and tracks are nicely sequenced.

What I really like, and what makes this CD different from the rest, is that the vocalist E.J. Decker shares the spotlight with the guys in the band, who turn in superb performances. It's like being in a New York nightclub -- the singer takes a little breather, and the musicians are having such a great time they just keep going 'til the vocalist jumps back in.

From toe-tappers to smoky ballads, you'll really enjoy this slice of New York nightlife - BUY IT!
