Amazon.com essential recording

The Sephardic Jews, scattered through the world after their expulsion from Spain in 1492, kept alive for centuries not only their language, Ladino, but an extraordinary repertory of "folk" songs, many of them quite sophisticated. As Ladino culture began to slowly fade away over the course of the 20th century, musicologists collected and transcribed these melodies from Ladino-speaking communities in Sarajevo, Sofia, Salonika, Smyrna, Jerusalem, and other cities. Beginning in the 1970s, these extraordinary songs were revived (to considerable excitement) for concert audiences--a revival sparked in large part by a 1976 recording by Hesperion XX. This now-legendary early music ensemble, renamed Hesperion XXI for the new century, has returned to the music of the Sephardic Diaspora with this beautifully produced and packaged release. Disc 1 contains eight songs performed lovingly by the magnetic Montserrat Figueras (who sings with an appropriately unstudied tone). The second disc includes eight more melodies performed instrumentally; the choice of instruments reflects the influence of the Muslim-ruled areas where the Sephardim settled with the oud, rebab, and qanun (Middle Eastern equivalents of the lute, fiddle, and dulcimer) performing alongside harps, lutes, flutes, and frame drums. (Inexplicably, however, the final track of this second CD--an improvisation for the sarod and tabla--sounds nice but feels completely foreign to the theme of this release.) It may have been more effective programming to mingle the vocal and instrumental tracks across the two CDs rather than segregating them. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars One of Savall's finest.......2004-05-19

Hespérion XXI (formerly Hespérion XX, but renamed to honour the new century) is one of the most accomplished ensembles specialising in the early music of the Iberian peninsula. It is one of the ongoing collectives led by the formidable Jordi Savall, renowned for his interpretations on the viol da gamba. The members are always changing, which makes the ensemble simply a name for a grouping of artists and interpreters of this immensely rich musical heritage, yet always under Savall's masterful direction. Diaspora Sefardi is a double-CD of music of the Sephardic Jews, a diverse culture originating in Spain and later settling in countries around the Mediterranean after their expulsion from most of Spain in 1492. Never losing sight of their basic identity as Jews or their awareness of their Spanish origins, the Sephardic culture gradually incorporated numerous influences from the peoples among whom it evolved: from the Arab culture of north Africa, from the Turks, Greeks, Bulgarians, Rumanians, Serbocroats, etc. In short, Sephardic music is an amazing blend of all these influences, immediately recognisable for its unique manifestation of this diversity.

Led by the impeccable soprano Montserrat Figueras, a generous collection of sephardic romances resides on disc one, and ten instrumental pieces are found on disc two. Savall (performing on lira, viola and rebab) is joined by some virtuoso players here: Pedro Estevan on percussions, Yair Dalal on oud, Andrew Lawrence-King on arpa doppia, Pedro Memelsdorff on flutes, and a handful of others on psaltry, qanun, laud, sarod and medieval harp. This recording differs in kind from other interpretations (by Savall or by countless other interpreters of this music) in that it employs a more diverse instrumentation that lies beyond the standard western European grouping of percussion, viol, flutes and harps, and rather embraces the instrumentations of eastern influences of this music (oud, qanun, sarod, etc.).

Disc one, subtitled "Por que llorax blanca nina" (Why do you weep fair child?) is a selection of beautiful songs, mostly from 16th and 17th century documents, though all of them look back much earlier to a very old tradition of songs. Montserrat Figueras is full of vitality, her breathtaking voice and accomplished techniques show her complete mastery of this challenging material.

Disc two, "Las estrellas de los cielos" (The stars in the sky), is a diverse collection of instrumental pieces, interpreted and performed to perfection by this ensemble. This second disc is the real jewel here. Even in the complexity of rhythms, fostered by Pedro Estevan's challenging techniques, the rhythms are extremely accessible, allowing the listener to move around within the multifaceted and subtle instrumentations. Some are traditional dance pieces, while others more meditative reflections and variations on the music of the popular romances.

Listening to this music is always a rewarding enterprise. Full of surprises, it never provokes the same response twice. This release comes highly recommended for the curious listener. It comes beautifully packaged with lyrics and an informative essay by Paloma Diaz-Mas.

5 out of 5 stars Nearly every night for 6 months!.......2003-05-01

After owning this CD for about 4 years, when my newborn daughter needed bedtime soothing I grabbed this (the 2nd CD). We listen to it nearly every night and I am never bored with it. It only bothers me a little when I find it getting stuck in my head during the day. I still enjoy sitting in the dark listening to it after 6 months. Beautiful moving music.

5 out of 5 stars Diáspora sefardí / Hespèrion XXI.......2000-11-13

The person who sang O Mio Babbino Caro is Carmen Monarcha. Do a search for her on YouTube; she's really fantastic!

Anyway, I saw Andre Rieu on a PBS special on television and it looked like such an awesome, high-energy concert! The CD is not so exciting, but it is worth buying just for that beautiful aria.

This has to be one of Andre's best. The live audience adds much to the music being played. I wish I had been there for the performance.

If you enjoy the sounds that the mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ can produce - you'll enjoy this album. George Wright is probably the best ever at mastering the multiple banks of keys and pedals of this complex instrument, and the music is very relaxing and entertaining. The sounds he coaxes out of the Wurlitzer on "Quiet Village" are remarkable. Easily one of his best - excellent on either a small office stereo, or played on a home theater system.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2002-10-24

Erich kunzel has recorded a wonderfully exhilerating item this time! Wonderfully exhuberant is mild compared to the lively playing Kunzel always gets from this great orchestra! Arrangements are mostly by Tommy Newsome who knows how to write charts of varying degrees of excellence, particularly the winsome "Girl from Ipanema" which compliments the lyrics endless reflections on a beautiful, bikini-clad young woman. "Sweet and Gentle" is a saucy number while Eric Knight, the only arranger to get the Boston Pops under Fiedler to swing to new heights, contributes an unforgettably boisterous account of "Lambada." The sound is full of punch and contrast. And Doc Severinsen plays in "Virgen" a marvelous soloistic stratospheric account. My advice is to buy this immediately. It's one hot album!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful arrangements of music from all over the world........2001-10-26

Telarc and Eric Kunzel never fail to amaze at the quality of their selections.

Even tough some of the arrangements here have a little too much
fanfare at the start they are still great to listen to.

Most of these melodies you have heard them at least once in you life. And they are reproduced here with the Kunzel magic.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection of Music.......2001-10-26

A Beautiful collection of music from all over the world.
(latin world that is)

I little grandiose on some selections (that's kunzel) but GREAT nonetheless.

Album Description

Randy Fuller, Larry Thompson and Billy Webb are three of the hardest working rock n' rollers on the planet. They originally came together in 1963 in a teenage band called the Fanatics in El Paso, Texas, playing alongside Randy's brother Bobby. It was this very lineup of the Fanatics that honed their skills night after night, devastating throngs of rockers at big brother Bobby's teen club, the Rendezvous (named after the California club famous for surf legend Dick Dale). The signature sound created by this early version of the Bobby Fuller Four came out of a combination of their own origins—Billy had arrived in Texas from Iowa, where'd he'd been playing with the legendary Black Cats, and Larry was of course the Tacoma, Washington import steeped in R&B, blues and sheer coolness. Bobby and Randy, though both hatched in the Southwest, had started playing music as young noisemakers in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their diverse formative influences combined with the sounds of true Texas heroes from Buddy Holly to Long John Hunter to create a truly unique, insanely infectious and down right driving sound.

Then, in June of 1964, at the height of their local popularity and with their home studio recording of I Fought The Law (pulled off of Randy's copy of the Crickets record) under their collective belt, Larry and Billy left the band for any of the long forgotten reasons that teenagers part ways, with Billy and Larry moving on to form the Rooks with another El Paso music legend, Joe Ritchie.

Bobby and Randy soon recruited two members from early El Paso rock n' roll combo the Counts, their first guitar player Jim Reese (who'd been on loan to the Fanatics in the preliminary lineup) and drummer Dalton Powell, who had replaced Bobby on skins when he left to form his own band on guitar. By the end of '64 the new edition of the Fanatics had landed in Hollywood as the Bobby Fuller Four, and the rest is history, sad and true. A year and a half later, in the summer of '66, the group's meteoric rise came to a crashing halt when Bobby was found dead under bizarre circumstances.

So here we are now, four decades after the Fanatics pounded the boards at El Paso teen clubs, holding in our hands a new rock n' roll collection by the very same bunch of guys that mixed that sockin' concoction of West Texas stomp with each of their far flung inspirations. Randy Fuller's fine voice is the lead vocal this time, and he's still pounding away on bass- without a doubt one of the best and most creative bass players in rock n' roll, and he's joined again by two unstoppables from the Rendezvous— Larry Thompson and Billy Webb. What are the chances? And what're the chances that they would be quite fantastic all over again? But here they all are, three of the Four, recorded at their home studio, calling all the shots on defiant rockers, heart stopping ballads-- some old, some new, some stormin', some undeniably blue. It Happened In El Paso, and it'll happen again and again, wherever these three cats decide to be at any given time, and whenever you make the right turn onto Bobby Fuller Drive. Buckle up. It's gonna be a wild ride.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Breakin' Rocks really rocks!!!.......2007-05-04

Normally, I wouldn't give this sort of record a 5 star rating, but since the rating scale is limited to a scale of 1 to 5 stars, the best rating I could give Breakin' Rocks is a measly 5 stars!

Back when I was a teenager, I loved listening to my Bobby Fuller Four albums ("KRLA King of the Wheels" and "I fought the Law") so much that I have extra copies so that one copy could be used for taping.

My record collection even included obscure copies of 45RPM singles of "Magic Touch," and "Love's Made a Fool of You."

As a young bass player, I sharpened my playing chops by learning such songs as "Let Her Dance."

Moving from the past to the present, The Bobby Fuller Drive blasts off where the Bobby Fuller Four left off in 1966 (with the tragic and mysterious death of Bobby Fuller).

Normally, I don't care for the new re-recodings of the old songs, but the old BB4 songs on Breakin' Rocks are all exceptional exceptions!

Breakin' Rocks (along with any future recordings by the Bobby Fuller Drive) belongs in evry BB4 fan's record collection.

The Bobby Fuller Drive blasts off where the Bobby Fuller Four left off...

Oops...I already said that!

4 out of 5 stars Breakin Rocks "ROCKS".......2004-08-13

I've had this CD now for months and I continue to hear new things each time I listen. This work is so honest and real. You can tell these player's are playing from the heart. Every cut moves me big time. This is so much better than the music that is put out today from the biggies, it's from the soul of this group.

Monte Paul (drummer)

5 out of 5 stars Exuberant and Irresistible Rock 'n' Roll.......2004-07-29

The album cover depicts a battered and bullet-riddled street sign and three weary men on a chain gang. Crack open the cd case and discover within a generous offering of glorious, vibrant rock 'n' roll.

Breakin' Rocks serves up a West Texas stew of faithful but sonically updated versions of Bobby Fuller's 60's classics, a couple of Buddy Holly covers and a sprinkle of well-written new originals.

Bassist Randy Fuller takes the lead on most songs. Back in the 60s, his voice always lent a unique quality to Bobby Fuller Four backing vocals. Today, as lead singer, his voice is distinctive and powerful. I was particularly taken by his heartfelt singing on Another Sad and Lonely Night, which should have gone top ten in 1965 and should today in this new version. On the ballad, New Shade of Blue, Randy's weathered, soulful vocal brings added depth to the lyrics. Elsewhere, Let Her Dance features propulsive drumming, a nifty La Bamba-like guitar solo and has the radio friendly feel of a power pop anthem. Nervous Breakdown is the fiercest rocker here. Randy's roaring vocal and throbbing bass are spot on, as is the dazzling guitar solo. A cover of Bobby Fuller covering Eddie Cochran, Nervous Breakdown is one delicious slice of rock 'n' roll.

There are two especially noteworthy autobiographical originals. It Happened In El Paso recalls the early days of the Bobby Fuller Four as they began to chart with their classic version of I Fought the Law and even echoes its refrain. It's a driving rocker showcasing pumping piano by Larry Knechtel. The colorful lyrics of The Lobby tell us about the most popular music joint across the Rio Grande in Juarez, Mexico.

Breakin' Rocks is a treat for fans of authentic rock 'n' roll, especially of the Bobby Fuller-Buddy Holly-West Texas brand. Three of the members of Bobby Fuller Drive played together as early as 1963, bassist Randy Fuller, guitarist Billy Webb, and drummer Larry Thompson. Their joy and satisfaction in making this compelling music comes through clearly in every note they sing and play.

Before their expulsion in 1492, the Jews of medieval Spain developed a rich and lively culture, including an exquisite repertory of songs called romanceros--and they kept that repertory alive as they settled in places as diverse as Morocco, Bosnia, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Lovely as the romanceros are, they would have languished as the objects of ethnomusicological studies and might have disappeared altogether, were it not for the efforts of gifted musicians like Hespèrion XX. Jordi Savall and his ensemble, fronted by the unique soprano Montserrat Figueras, just about single-handedly brought those songs to the attention of the modern public with this 1976 recording (now reissued at a bargain price). Disc 1 features a selection of secular music from "Christian" Spain--that is, the courts of Ferdinand and Isabella and the Catholic nobility. The music is elegant and occasionally austere, but Figueras, Savall, and colleagues give the livelier pieces a flavorful swing. Yet disc 2, which features the Sephardic songs, is the real drawing card here. It was in Moorish Spain that Jewish culture flourished, so Hespèrion XX performs the romanceros with Arabic instruments, such as the 'ud (the ancestor of the European lute) and hand drums. These musicians, rechristened Hespèrion XXI in honor of the new century, perform this repertory with more polish now than they did in 1976, but--just as A Feather on the Breath of God did for Hildegard von Bingen--this recording made its own little bit of musical history. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Like a religious experience.......2007-03-28

This disc is pure magic that transends and defies definition. It is time period music that has been rereleased to capture the magic of the original recording. Each song is amazing. The music creates a mood that is best enjoyed alone ,in private so that your thoughts can be elevated to the point of inspiration. Although I like both discs I prefer the one that features Sephardic Romances over the disc that is Court Music and Songs. Montserrat Figueras angelic voice lends itself to beautiful interpretations of these beautiful songs from the Age before the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. This ancient music is preserved and freshly interpreted under the masterful leadership of Jordi Savall for an authentic recreation. If you have never heard Hesperion XX check this one out, it is fantastic. Recommended for classical music fans who want to hear something different. Once you hear Montserrat Figuerras voice you will feel the inspiration and be hooked on her angelic voice.

3 out of 5 stars Dissappointing soprano.......2006-02-22

I was excitet buying this CD, expecting the quality of songs equal or better than
Begona Olavide and Carlos Paniagua on MA recodings. The music was fine but singing by soprano Montserrat Figueras was borderline annoying.

5 out of 5 stars A balm for any soul.......2001-01-02

Attempting to review a Savall/Figueras CD is a frustrating task. The arsenal of superlatives is so quickly depleted. Terms like 'matchless' and 'unique' might be used, but lack strict definition. After all, a 'matchless' voice needn't be a good one. Terms like 'divine' or 'angelic' tend to remove Montserrat's singing from the real and human. She's nothing if not human. Having been blessed with watching as well as hearing her perform, vouching for her vitality on a stage is easy. But the superior quality of her voice and presentation is so far above the mundane or common as to become nearly indescribable. Anything less than adulation for her seems to indicate shortcomings in the disk or performer. Neither performance nor disk quality falls short here. That she performs religious songs here simply adds to the power of her impact on the listener. You necessarily hesitate, cease other activity, and, if moved enough, drop to your knees in respect and admiration. Tough to do in a crowded concert hall, but the motivation is there. And this from someone who shunned listening to vocal performances for many years. Dame Kiri was one exception and Argenta another, but the discovery of Figueras was the discovery of a voice without flaw.

Anyone visiting this page must certainly know of Jordi Savall and Hesperion XX. You may, however, have missed the glory of Montserrat Figueras' voice. Make up for that lack right away. The selections available here are pitifully limited, but this CD is as good an introduction as any. Don't hesitate to sit and enjoy this music. The sounds received will be a reward to whatever spiritual sense you possess.

5 out of 5 stars Ten stars if possible..........2000-01-27

I agree completely with Stephan: outstanding performance. Montserrat at her best. If "Si d'amor pena sentis" doesn't bring tears to your eyes, what does?

3 out of 5 stars Historical re-release.......1999-07-20

Hesperion XX were pioneers in reviving this music, and collectors will value these recordings which first came out in 1976. However most listeners may prefer more recent recordings by Wimmer on Naxos, and Alia Musica on Harmonia Mundi which have digital sound and include Spanish, and occasionally Hebrew, texts and translations.

5 out of 5 stars JALOUSIE/ STAR DUST- Arthur Fiedler & The Boston Pops.......2007-02-22

If you're a classical music lover, you can't go wrong with this great combination of two nostalgic gems, originally recorded on Lp format by Arthur Fiedler, conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra.
"Jalousie" was definitely one of Fiedler's finest works. The album theme "Jalousie" or "Jealousie" based on a tango composed by Gade, is a work of art. I first heard Fiedler's version of this great music master piece watching the old "B.F.Goodrich" musical program on television back during the early 60's and I immediately realized Fiedler's Boston Pops version of this great classic was absolutely the very best I have ever heard. This great album is complemented by other gorgeous classics, like "Il Guarany", "Jamaican Rhumba" "Danze Piemontese" and others. The second album included on this CD "Stardust" is another recorded milestone by Fiedler, "Stardust", "Clair de Lune" and other beautiful classics will simply delight you. Maestro Arthur Fiedler will always be remembered by music fans as Mr.Boston Pops. Fortunately a portion of his musical works with the Pops have been re-issued for us to enjoy and reminisce. I very highly recommend it. Do not miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars Beware! two old CDs reissued with a new name.......2006-08-02

I bought this CD with great anticipation because I love Spanish music of this era. To my disappointment, this was not a new recording, but a reissue of two CDs I already own: "1492: Music from the Age of Discovery" and "Traveler." If you don't have these CDs already, this double set is a great bargain. But check your CD rack before buying!

5 out of 5 stars A reworking of a prior disc - but now with 2 CDs.......2006-01-27

I was pleased to see that one of my favorite CDs had not really gone out of print, but was reworked into this title and now with a bonus CD. Even though I own the original "Music from the Age of Discovery 1492", I'll probably buy this disc just for the extras. Very nice mood music, lots of variety, exotic instruments and lovely voices.

5 out of 5 stars perfect by candlelight or in the office.......2000-10-20

i've owned this CD for several years, and never tire of it. weather i'm curled up with a book, or just in the office with headphones on, it's appropriate for any occasion (outside a raucus party). i highly suggest it if you're interested in exotic, mystical, and festive tunes.

5 out of 5 stars CONTINUING THE DEFINITIVE LECUONA SERIES.......2004-09-14

In Each volume, Tirino's playing is Herculean. He understands all the forms-and then plays them flawlessly with total feel, command, poise, and technical panache this music requires. The rumba will have you begging for more! I don't think anyone could ever surpass the perfection Tirino brings to his Lecuona disks. Gold standard.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2001-05-17

I love this disc. Tirino is extraordinary from the first note to the last. How dare anyone call this great artist any other name but MAESTRO. This is a must have for any music lover. In fact, this is my favorite disk out of the whole Lecuona series on BIS. Get it, or you'll be waiting till the end of time for a better recording by any artist on these works, or on any Lecuona for that matter. 5 stars plus 100!

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE MUSIC AND PLAYING.......2001-05-04

This disc is fabulous from begining to end. Tirino is phenomenal-don't even DARE to think otherwise! This music swings and is beautiful from top to bottom. I'm going to buy all the discs in this series-if they are as good as this one, boy-I'm in for a treat. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars PIANIST OF PIANISTS.......2001-04-24

What more can be said of Tirino and his recordings of Lecuona's music except TOTAL, ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. This disc stands out for several reasons: The spirited Rumba with voices and chorus, and the Danzas Cubanas which are real gems. (as well as Vals Gitano). These danzas require EXTREME Left hand control of technique along with many colors and swing. I as a Cuban know this very well. I have never heard these pieces played better. Tirino's HUGE technique, beautiful sound, varied phrasing, and delicate subtelties never fail to amaze the listener-its incredible. Forget any negative comments-they are silly, stupid and uniformed. A better pianist, and better playing of this music you will never, EVER hear. If you want the best recordings of Lecuona's music, Tirino's series on the BIS label is IT. Get Lecuona's own recordings as well, as a point of reference. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars PERFECTION: PIANO PLAYING DOESEN"T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.......2001-04-24

I own the entire Tirino/Lecuona series on the BIS label and I am a teacher at a major musical institution. I have heard a lot of piano playing in my life, including much Latin American piano music, which I have a special affinity for. Simply stated: Tirino plays this music like a God. Pianism of this high a calibre dosen't get any better. Period. Of all the discs in this series, this one is my favorite,(along with Volume 3). The rumba sizzles, and Tirino infuses it with breadth, stylistic colors and rhythm with real panache. And he wrote the Spanish lyric himself! Amazing. Tirino's technical skills are monumental, BIG, Lisztian in ability, certainly far above "Clementi" or "Scarlatti", good heavens. His playing is perfect for Lecuona-in fact-for ANYTHING. Beyond staggering technique he has a singing quality and subtelty of nuance and phrasing rarely heard nowadays-flexibility of sound with thousands of variations in phrasing, tone, dynamic, and pedal subtelties that make his musicianship stand FAR above many others. His tone is rich, full, NEVER BANGING (enough already, please!), aristocratic-never vulgar. Anyone who really knows good piano playing will hear it. Tirino's playing is very warm. The Danzas Cubanas (especially Lola esta de Fiesta) are magical. Put on Lecuona's recordings and compare them side by side to Tirino's. AMAZINGLY IDENTICAL! Fact: Tirino has been recognized as the Lecuona authority in the world for a reason-TIME magazine, The New York Times, and Stereo Review can't be wrong. Neither is the Lecuona family, who have endorsed his recordings, interpretations and work. There might not even be a discussion about Lecuona these days, had it not been for the work of Tirino.

In summary-Tirino is a GREAT artist and one would be hard pressed to imagine anyone else coming along and improving on his recordings. Comments made to the contrary can be dismissed as silly, uninformed vulgarity. If you want to hear great Lecuona, and great Piano playing by a tremendous artist, this disc and others in this series are for you. If not, it might be advisable to learn music, and re-wire your brain to try and listen differently.
