When was the last time you heard a musical with a truly hilarious book? Rachel Sheinkin has concocted such a thing for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, one of the most unexpected hits of 2005. Unfortunately, Sheinkin's wit is mostly lost on a cast album; fortunately, the show's songs are by the great William Finn. Set at the titular event, the musical never looks down on the competiting kids (played by adult actors), instead portraying them as endearingly nerdy but also smart, and endowing them with real personalities rather than predictably spelling-bee tics. The cast is uniformly superb, although personal faves include Sarah Saltzberg, playing Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre with a delicious lisp ("Woe Is Me"); Jesse Tyler Ferguson, bringing sweet innocence to Leaf Coneybear ("I'm Not That Smart"); and Dan Fogler, in a breakout comic performance as William Barfee ("Magic Foot," sounding like a sly tribute to Kander & Ebb). This show may be small in scale, but it's a huge winner. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Great fun, but not for the little ones!.......2007-03-15
Love it!!!!.......2007-03-08
Good but not great.......2007-02-06
Upon first listening I have to say I was slightly disappointed. The style of singing is all the same: strong and loud and the melodic movement of the songs is generally all the same with lots of long notes that generally get prety annoying after awhile.
Some positives though...The songs move through the progression of the bee quite nicely with the "Goodbye" Songs and "My Favourite Moment From the Bee" songs adding a nice theme to the whole score.
"The I Love You Song" is still a personal favourite but "Woe is Me" is also a strong song and parts of "Pandemonium" with it's upbeat rhythm are toe tapping and enjoyable.
The characters are varied but their songs don't really do them justice.
Good but not great.
Charming musical.......2007-01-10
TERRIBLE........2007-01-04
Sorry guys, it was AWFUL. The music was semi-decent, there weren't really any standouts although the I love you song tugs at your heartstrings a bit. But the heart of the matter is, there was NO STORY and NO PLOT whatsoever! I was so disappointed! It stayed in act 1 the entire show and never climaxed. The plot was "once there was a spelling bee. A bunch of kids competed until one of them won" (and really, nothing more happens than that.)
In comedy, things are more flexible and you don't necessarily have to have any structure to your story (although it generally makes for a better and more memorable show) but in this case, it wasn't even funny! I think I laughed twice throughout the whole show, and they were sort of halfhearted chuckles, like, wow, I can't believe they just told that overused joke... again.
I think that's the only reason they bring people in from the audience to improv a little bit (but don't leave much room for improv, anyway) - because if they didn't it would be so boring and pointless that people would be leaving the theater. I only stayed around because I kept thinking, "there has to be some point to this. There has to be some interesting twist at the end that makes it all worthwhile. Maybe nobody wins, and somebody learns something." And then it ended, and I was sorely disappointed.
Again, the music wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't anything special. Most of the songs just blend together and sound the same. William Finn doesn't understand the concept of musical variance. The majority of the songs describe the characters' history but NOTHING EVER HAPPENS to any of them. That's not a story.
Anyway, enjoy the music if you're into it, but don't go see the show. It's a waste of time and money.

An Excellent Bargain-priced CD!!.......2002-02-13
Maurice Andre is a fantastic trumpet player, and he simply shines on this recording (featuring the Academy of St. Martins on the Field under Sir Neville Marriner). Bargain-priced CDs tend to get the proverbial bum rap, but Seraphin (as usual) offers a first-rate recording that can compete with any full-priced release. I've listened to this disc at least 20 times, and I never tire of it. Andre and Marriner bring to life these works, some by lesser-known composers (like Stolzel, Telemann and Torelli). I can't think of a better introduction to these underrated Baroque artists (with the exception of Sony's 'Baroque in Italy' CD, which sadly is now out-of-print, too).
This recording, as with so many others, will not be available forever. Given the quality of the recording and beauty of the pieces, I strongly recommend purchasing this disc before it, too, goes out-of-print. It's a great disc at a great price, and would be a welcomed addition to any Classical music collection.
Better than a dab of Imperial margarine.......2001-03-01
The Stölzel concerto for four instrumental choirs is a particular gem, a great piece to cue up and wake up in the morning to. There is nothing particularly deep or heavy here. All of these pieces are light, in major keys. They are well recorded and well played.

Queen of salsa Celia Cruz was royalty long before the music was even called that. 100% Azucar collects 19 tracks from her '50s and '60s output on the Seeco label. Smoking even at medium tempos, the disc is full of the hot mambo rhythms of the Sonora Matancera band and the full-throttle vocals of "la incomparable Celia." Included are both sides of one of her first singles, "Ritmo, Tambo y Flores"/"Elegua Quiere Tambo," along with other unstoppable body-rockers such as "Oye Mi Rumba" and "Mi Soncito." Informed, fascinating liner notes and reproductions of beautiful vintage album covers complete this prime package. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Balanced & Refined English Folk Song Adaptations.......2005-02-04
This budget worthy 2-CD set displays this in two parts, the first performed by the Acadamey of St.Martin in-the-Fields while the second disc features more period instruments with the New Queen's Hall Orchestra and the London Philharmonic.
Celia Nicklin is superb with the Oboe Concerto nusancing this pastoral yet lively offering. Iona Brown likewise contributes a fine solo violin performance with "The Lark Ascending"
The strings also provide a strong offering on the "Tallis Fantasia", one of his strongest compositions on this selection.
Excellent example of this prominent English composer's love with folk song interpretation, in this recording done passionately and naturally.

Despite running for only a month Off-Broadway in 2002, this musical was preserved in a studio cast recording five years later. Based on Herman Raucher's coming-of-age memoir about a very special New England summer (which also spawned a 1971 movie that boasted one of Michel Legrand¹s most famous themes, THe Summer of '42 is uneven but sports enough grace notes to be deemed encouraging. Working from a book by Hunter Foster (himself a musical-theater actor of note), David Kirshenbaum has come up with a pleasant, if perhaps a little bland scoreone wishes his music reflected more the youthful passion felt by the main protagonist, 15-year-old Hermie, for the older Dorothy. Kirshenbaum, like many young composers of his generation, displays a certain Sondheimian bent ("Will That Ever Happen to Me?" "I Think I Like Her") but the best tracks are the ones that incorporate period touches, most notably in the lovely Andrews Sisters-like harmonies of Celia Keenan-Bolger, Danielle Ferland and Megan Valerie Walker (check out their winning, swinging "You're Gonna Miss Me," "Man Around the House," and "Oh Gee, I Love My G.I."). As Dorothy, the wonderful Rachel York gets three ballads that may well find their way in many cabaret set lists in years to come--Alice Ripley already did the belting showcase "Losing Track of Time" (a bonus track) on Unsuspecting Hearts. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description

This 2-CD set soars!.......2005-07-04
As with all the Chandos Opera in English recordings I have listened to, the hallmark of this series is crisp and flawless delivery, due probably as much to the fact that it is a digital recording as to the fact that the emphasis on perfection is so obvious from all involved. An effort is clearly being made to make opera understandable; care is being taken to fit the libretto in English to the score so that it fits seamlessly; and the performers - singers and orchestra -- are clearly taking that mandate seriously. Technically, this is a strong offering with much to commend it above all others. As noted, it is a wonderfully produced set that is a treat to listen to in stereo. I played this set on both my home stereo, and on my computer, with enhanced speakers and sub-woofer, and found the experience being closer to the speakers, listening on my computer, a far more enjoyable experience. It is easy to see why this set received the "Editor's Choice" from Gramophone. It is a delight in every sense, and a technically superb rendering of a classic opera that is of such high quality that it is really the only one to own.
Masonic Opera.......2005-06-06
Buy it, it's a great work of art by our brother Mozart.
Chandos plays its strength.......2005-06-01
Very well, what the hell,
nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Time to try these magic bells.
The Chandos Sound works well with the music. The orchestra has a transparent sound that supports the singers nicely. Sir Charles Mackerras, now in his 80th year, can still kick up his heels and lead a lively show. Supported by historical documents he takes Pamina's G-minor lament at a slightly quicker tempo than usual. Rebecca Evans is at her best in this aria and floats some lovely pianissimos.
Lesley Garrett (Papagena) matches Simon Keenlyside's ability to deliver the spoken scenes with a character actor's comic flair and yet sing the music with seamless beauty. The Three Ladies (Majella Cullagh, Sarah Fox and Diana Montague) likewise show a comic touch when fauning over Tamino yet never sacrifice their harmonic blend. Elizabeth Vidal as Queen of the Night hits all of the altissimo F's but I feel she could inject a little more venom into "The Wrath of Hell".
Barry Banks highlights the youthful vulnerability of Tamino with endearing lyricism. John Tomlinson's bass easily tackles the lowest reaches of Sarastro's range, but his recent Flying Dutchman is still in my ear. I wish he had somehow slimmed down his voice for this Mozart role.
The sum total is that this is an ensemble production in which everyone shines at (or near) his best. The Geoffrey Mitchell choir has the last word:
Now beauty and wisdom
have vanquished the night
and crown'd their endeavour
with glory and light.

Hay Tumbao!.......2007-07-02
Celia rose early on in her long career to the very summit of her craft. Surrounded by the ranks of Beny Moré, Tito Gomez, Vicentico Valdes, Bobby Capo, Tito Rodriguez, Celino Gonzalez, Mirta Silva, Miguel Matamoros, Celeste Mendoza, Miguelito Cuní, Los Compadres, Tito Puente, Ismael Rivera, Abelardo Barroso, Olga Guillot, and Roberto Faz among many more, she was able to transcend each one as well as the era in which they triumphed. She was equally comfortable with a new generation of artists among them Justo Betancourt, Héctor Lavoe, Jose Alberto, Rubén Blades, Ismael Miranda, Oscar De Leon, Willy Chirino, Albita, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Ismael Quintana, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, Adalberto Santiago, Bobby Cruz, and Cheo Feliciano, each equally in awe of her legendary status and magnanimity.
In Luna Vieja, Celia again demonstrates to perhaps a new following of fans that she was equally adept at boleros as she was at guarachas, bombas, and rumbas. Toro Matari, El Tumbao y Celia, a favorite of mine because of the way it builds into a pitch of soneo vocalization rooted en la harmonia del blanco con el ritmo del negro. There is not a single song on this audio CD that will let you down and in fact if you learn to listen and appreciate the artistry from both vocalist and musicians alike, you will come to agree that this is one of the best recordings ever made by Latin music artists. Throughout all the songs on this recording you feel Cuba down to the cobblestones of La Habana as well as the rhythmic blends and arrangements of New York City, Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo.
Lest we forget, it is the great and legendary Johnny Pacheco who lends his infectious tumbao and conjunto tipico arrangements to this classic recording, and who also masterfully brews his special cup of dos de café y dos de azúcar to help draw out the best of this brand of Cuban music. Johnny Pacheco is equal parts band leader, businessman, founder, musician, composer, producer and, A&R man. Under Johnny Pacheco's musical husbandry, a new vintage of legendary performer is delivered to listeners new and old alike. I'd easily argue that it is this series of recordings between Celia and Johnny that brings out some of the very best recorded performances by Celia Cruz. Pacheco would go on to record several more audio CDs with Celia as lead vocals and for this we are all the better.

The cries of "azucar" are unmistakable on Regalo del Alma, the posthumous album from salsa queen Celia Cruz. Though she was battling cancer at the time of its recording, Cruz sounds positively electric throughout the 11-track collection, which effortlessly melds native Cuban rhythms with soulful grooves and pop sensibilities. She teams with rap star El General on album opener "Ella Tiene Fuego," an irresistible call to the dance floor. The album's first single, "Ríe Y Llora," simmers under a Santana-esque guitar lick; and the bittersweet, deceptively cheery "Diagnóstico" finds Cruz visiting her doctor because she is homesick for her native country. Cruz's strength lies in her ability to personalize every song she sings; she makes every lyric, every word important. Anchored by her weathered, one-of-a-kind vocal delivery, Regalo del Alma stands as a glittering testament to a woman whose talent, spirit, and grace continue to carry the music straight to the hearts of anyone willing to listen. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:
Celia Cruz, take me back to Sonora, Mama!.......2006-10-27
You know what I'm saying.
I mean, Celia isn't Los Hurricanos del Norte, but in this album she's found that same Latin club bass layered in brass that just slams you onto the floor and makes you bailar como un gringo loco.. Cuba, Sonora, what's the differance? If it makes you dance, it's all good.

An Incredible Talent That Lives On..........2004-12-22
This one was made for dancing!.......2004-08-06
1. "Ella Tiene Fuego" is a hot, danceable Salsa with a modern infectious groove!
2. "José Caridad" is also a great danceable Salsa that is still modern in sound but more traditional sounding than the first track.
3. "Ríe Y Llora" is a sassy danceable Cha Cha Cha. One can't help but sing `Na na na na na na!" along with Celia. It's very contagious!
4. "Ay, Pena, Penita" is similar in feel to track two on the CD. This is also a danceable salsa.
5. "Diagnóstico" is slightly more up tempo than the previous tracks and is a danceable Salsa.
6. "La Niña De La Trenza Negra" This song is great to listen to, but it's a little harder to dance to than other tracks on the CD. It utilizes some voice distortion technology for Celia's voice that is interesting and very modern.
7. "Me Huele La Rumba" Don't let the word "Rumba" in the title fool you; Celia kicks it up a notch with this song! It's a fast, but still danceable Salsa. It's great for your very tight and tiny moves. The breakdown in the middle is great for showing off.
8. "No Estés Amargao" Not the best song to dance to on the CD due to a constant change in tempo and rhythm but still fun for listening.
9. "Pa' La Cola" is a danceable Salsa.
10. "María La Loca" is one more danceable salsa.
11. "Yo Viviré (I Will Survive) is a cover of the Gloria Gaynor disco classic. This one is a little too fast to Salsa to but makes a quick Cha Cha Cha. It's a fun track, so you may be tempted to try to Salsa anyway. If you do, you'll definitely need a break afterwards.
Summary: A great album for dancing! There are 7 danceable Salsas, and two Cha Cha Chas. It's also great album for listening. Not a "skip that one" track on the whole CD. I don't know how you could possibly keep your seat while this is playing. While writing this review, I kept getting up to dance myself! A great buy and "must have" in your Salsa and Celia collection.
