This CD is definitely a must have!! I bought this CD at a local store and have enjoyed listening to it since. I can hear this album without skipping a track. I don't get why it's cost $22.00 everywhere I have seen it being sold, but it's definitely worth the money. My Favorite songs are the first ones on CD1 including Hijo de la luna, No es Serio este Cementerio, and Me Cuesta Tanto Olvidarte. My favorite songs are the second album just to name a few are Mujer Contra Mujer, Ay Que Pasado and many more. If you get the change. BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT!!!.......2003-06-22

This two CD collection is indispensable for the TRUE Mecano fans...It has all of the songs I remember hearing in my adolescent years; obviously some songs had to be left out, but the ones that are included are simply magnificent; Hijo de la Luna, Cruz de navajas,el 7 de Septiembre, No es serio este cementerio, but most of all, Naturaleza Muerta are to be enjoyed with all the senses; on that last song, one could almost taste the ocean's water...as is the case with Hawaii Bombay. This collection will certainly bring memories of when and where you were, exactly at the moment you heard each of these songs for the first time, it's that GOOD!!!

4 out of 5 stars Should've been better - Debió haber sido mejor.......2003-05-21

This 2 CD collection of Mecano's greatest hits is a great way for new fans to get to know the band, but I find it a tad dissapointing for actual fans. It's very hard for a compilation like this one to actually include all of the fans favorites, they're usually more what the artist and/or the label think should be included. This case is no exception. While most of their best songs are in here, most of their earlier work was left out -- granted, the band acheived its greatness in its last four albums, but still, they should have included more tracks from 'Mecano' and '¿Dónde está el país de las hadas?'. Also, the new tracks are a mixed bag, while some are great ('Cuerpo y corazón', 'El club de los humildes' and 'Stereosexual') the rest are forgettable. Still, Mecano's music can not be denied, so you should buy this CD, otherwise, your collection will be incomplete.

--

4 out of 5 stars Almost The Best.......2005-11-24

"Descanso" is the second best album this group produced, the best being "Entre El Cielo y el Suelo". What is significant in this album is the realization that of the two brothers, José Ma. is the better composer, and his songs dominate this recond. His songs "Mujer Contra Mujer" and "Dalí" are vastly superior to anything Nacho ever wrote and released with Mecano. These two songs, more than any other, offer the best qualities of Mecano. The beautiful melodies, the witty lyrics, the tasteful arrangements and Ms. Torroja's stylings. Beautiful.
None of this is meant to denigrate Nacho Cano's work. "Nueva York", "Un Año Más" and "Sol/Luna" show that he is still the group's more adventurous arranger and a talent to be reckoned with, but the quality of his songs here do not match his brother's or even his own in "Entre el Cielo y el Suelo". That lack of balance is what makes "Descanso Dominical" inferior to "Cielo/Suelo"

    5 out of 5 stars Best Spanish '80s pop.......2005-08-26

Way back then, I think I was the only one in my school in East London fanatical about Mecano - never mind to have heard about them. Oh boy, did everyone else miss out.

I was delighted to see that Anne Dudley did some arrangements and even played (?) on Descanso Dominical - such was Mecano's calibre by the time this album was released. 'La fuerza del destino' starts out as a straight synthy-pop song but hiding some delicious twists and turns, it still bowls me over. 'Laika' pre-dates Bjork's epic sounds by quite a while. And 'Heroes de la antartida' despite its perky beat has some truly chilling lyrics (no pun intended). Most of the tracks are very strong and DD will always be in my collection - 1980s tag or not!

5 out of 5 stars Mecano at its peak performance..........2005-01-21

It is very hard to say wich of all of Mecano's album is better, because they all are great. But if I had to choose one this would definitely be. At the time of the launch of this album (1988) Mecano was a well knowned worldwide pop (synth pop) group and now after many years the band was enyoing great success. Nevertheless, that success didn't affect their creativity, they were even more creative and maybe a fact of that were that they were now famous and wealthy enough to worry about other things. This album contains the classic "La Fuerza del Destino" wich is a song with such a magic melody and rhythm you never get tired of hearing it and if it was to be released today it would again be a hit. Then you have other great melodies in "Laika" and a very "synth poppy" song with a great bassline and beat called "Los Heros de la Antartida". "Eungenio Salvador Dali" has a great chorus and "Un ano mas" has a very catchy chorus and a feeling of celebration as it was supposed to be (is a new years eve song). Well, what else can I say? Almost all the songs have a distinctive great melody that would not bore you. Try findind this characteristics on an album... not many albums do this, so that's a sign that you just can't be wrong about buying this album.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Rock at its finest.......2004-08-02

If I had to choose THE Spanish Rock group of the 80's , it would have to be Mecano, Spain's darlings.

Mecano brings back fun memories of living in the Dominican Republic...I had moved there with my parents ( I was born in NYC), and remember sunny afternoons listening to the radio. I had never heard rock/pop music in Spanish--I didn't even think it existed! There were many artists I listened to: Miguel Bose, Los Inhumanos, Enanitos Verdes, Cahobazul (they were a Dominican group)...but hands down, Mecano was IT.

Mecano made an art of their music. I don't know how, but they managed to bring out the best in every grnre they tried" jazz, rock, pop, latino rythym, hearfelt ballads...all with the ethereal vocals of Ana Torroja. The lyrics at times were downright quirky, but at other times they expressed the romantic and political frustrations of their generation.

If I had to pick my favorite from this album, it would have to be "Un Año Mas" (One More Year)...it talks about the final moments on New Year's Eve, as celebrated in Spain, as well as the hope of better things in the coming year. Second fave would be "Me Cuesta Tanto Olvidarte" ("It's so hard for me to forget you"). I think the title says it all. For ANYONE who's gone through a breakup, this would be THE song to listen to...or NOT listen to, depending on how long to decide to sulk about your lost love!

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece from the masters!.......2003-05-20

This is the best Mecano album hands down. 'Aidalai' and 'Entre el cielo y el suelo' come close, but this baby tops them both.

If you've already heard Mecano, you know how lovely Ana Torroja's voice is. It can be lyrical and grand, but it can also be playful and childish when necessary. As for the song writing, it's the usual Nacho and José Mari mix of all their records, basically each one writes half of the songs in the album.

As for the tracks, standouts are 'Mujer contra mujer' (a gorgeous song about love between two women), 'La fuerza del destino' (a quirky love song suppossedly written by Nacho for his then girlfriend and now Ms. Tom Cruise, Penélope Cruz), 'Quédate en Madrid', '"Eungenio" Salvador Dalí" (as José Mari tells it, he is a great fan of Dalí's work and when he learned that the great painter was sick he wrote him a letter telling him how much he admired his work, well, after a while Dalí passed away while Mecano was on tour, and upon returning home, José Mari found a package in his mail that had a book of Dali's paintings dedicated by the master himself! He had signed it only days before leaving this earth!), "Un año más" and "Hermano sol, hermana luna".

5 out of 5 stars Definitely the best Mecano album........2006-10-18

I can only agree with all the other stellar reviews. Periodically I will listen to these songs and I think no album captures the new Spain that was emerging in the 80's the way this one, and really all of Mecano's music, does. The best song is "Me cuesta tanto olvidarte" but all of them are great. Knowing Spanish helps because part of the magic is listening to the poetic lyrics, and the contrast of the male point of view being sung by one of the most musical and feminine voices ever. Ana Torroja never disappoints with her singing but neither do the the Cano brothers with their clever, sometimes funny, other times sad, or just beautiful lyrics. All the songs by Jose Maria Cano are especially beautiful on this album.

    5 out of 5 stars EXQUISITO Y MEMORABLE.......2006-09-06

AUNQUE ANTES DE ESCUCHAR ESTE DISCO YA HABIA ESCUCHADO LAS PRODUCCIONES QUE HABIAN HECHO ESTOS MUCHACHOS CON "SONY", ME SORPRENDIERON PORQUE ESTE DISCO ES INFINITAMENTE SUPERIOR A TODO LO ANTERIORMENTE GRABADO. "AY QUE PESADO", "HIJO DE LA LUNA", "CRUZ DE NAVAJAS" Y "ME CUESTA TANTO OLVIDARTE", FUERON CANCIONES QUE LLENARON TODA UNA EPOCA A MEDIADOS Y FINALES DE LOS 80'S. EXQUISITA SELECCION DE TEMAS Y MELODIAS. ANA TORROJA, IGNACIO CANO, Y JOSE MARIA CANO FUERON, Y SIGUEN SIENDO ACTUALMENTE POR SEPARADO, GRANDES PERSONAJES DENTRO DEL POP/ELECTRONICO EN ESPANOL.

    3 out of 5 stars blue.......2006-07-04

this is my first time hearing and listening to this band. Hmm. Her voice is too babyish for me to like. I do like about three tracks though.

5 out of 5 stars Mecano Defined An Era.......2006-01-29

Mecano was a Spanish group that set a trend for Latin pop. It likened its sensibilities to the kind of rock/pop that was most famous in the United States and in Britain. Not quite New Wave, it was a synth heavy, intricately weaved song structure and featuring a quintissential girl lead singer, which at around 1982 when their first album came out was a main cup of tea.

Entre El Cielo Y El Suelo (In Between Heaven And The Floor) is the group's fourth and finest studio record. Released in 1986, it perfects all the aspects that made Mecano great in the first place and pushed the envelope in terms of songwriting, aesthetics, and harmonics. Their first CD was a fresh sounding concoction, featuring the band's signature songs, amid other more uneven songs whose fault was more of a lyrical immaturity than anything else. The next couple of Mecano records delved into this immaturity. They wanted to experiment within the boundaries of commercial pop and did so but in a very flawed matter.

There was an enormous transition between their third CD Ya Viene El Sol in 1984 and this classic that is unexplained for. Perhaps the reason for this was because one of the Cano brothers (Jose Maria) started contributing regular compositions and he proved to be unequivocally the better songwriter of the two brothers. Also the production is more assured and this record boasts a new batch of Mecano classics, such as Hijo De La Luna, perhaps the finest song in the group's catalog. There is not a single weak track in the record. It's a mesmerizing case of pitch perfect inspiration that elevated the status of a group that was starting to remain purely a cult hit. Entre El Suelo Y El Cielo amplifies them as the finest Latin pop group of the 1980s. The spectrum was theirs and theirs alone.

Unfortunately, this edition of this record omits two songs from the original track listing, which is composed of twelve songs, not ten. If you can get a hold of the complete record, you get "Las Cosas Pares" and "Te Busque."

Classic tracks: Ay Que Pesado, Hijo De La Luna, Me Cuesta Tanto Olvidarte, No Es Serio Este Cementerio and Cruz De Navajas

5 out of 5 stars GREATEST ALBUM EVER.......2003-10-12

Mecano was always a group I had heard coming from my parents, but I never took them that serious, considering I mainly listened to hiphop. On 1st listen, the melodies sounded very corny and ridiculous to me, but that changed in time.More than anything, the voice of vocalist Ana Torroja intrigued/soothed your mind to a point of great mystery. There was something about this album that just captivated you the more you listened to it. And though MECANO has broken up for several years now, and have put out many solid and great cds, this by far, is their best one. By the way, this is not the real album, since it lacks songs "Las Cosas Pares" and "Te Busque." Nevertheless, the album is a balanced depth that doesn't bore you with intended complexity. With each listen, the lyrics grow into relation into personal experiences.

1-ay que pesado-the hook is very catchy and the melody is very simple, which only enhances Ana's voice. The lyrics are incredible!
2-angel-the song sounds 2 mysterious at 1st listen, but the haunting vocals win u over, esp. with the incredible lyrics
3-hijo de la luna-one of the best songs on the album, it showcases outstanding storytelling ability, strong emotion and passion
4-50 palabras,60 palabras o 100-the melody is probably the simplest out of all the songs on the album, but is probably the deepest and most intriguing, due to awe-inspiring lyrics
5-me cuesta tanto olvidarte-probably the best song on the cd, which has been internationally recognized as 1 of the 100 greatest songs of all time, being expressed with such emotion that it can almost make you cry
6-no tienes nada que perder-the song is very difficult 2 interpret, but the chorus is incredible
7-las curvas de esa chica-this is probably the song I like the least, but is actually humorous and rhythmic to listen to
8-no es tan serio este cementerio-the lyrics are very chilling, but very deep, which go perfect with the vocals
9-cruz de navajas-this song is very insightful in2 relationships with its great storytelling and sensual rhythm.very good listen!
10-esta es la historia de un amor-very haunting and strange song. the lyrics are so simple that it's almost enigmatic. i still am trying to find what it's meaning is! but nevertheless, its a very good song

*I can say this cd has changed my life, given me insight.Perhaps that sounds subjective, but if you dont believe me, listen to it! I dont know if its safe to say that this album is 1 of the best ever (its up there though), but i can most definitely say its the greatest cd in spanish EVER! PERIOD.
If u dont speak or understand Spanish, id learn just to hear this cd. I dont have to lie, the proof is in the pudding.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD! But Not Perfect!.......2001-07-16

Although their last album, Descanso Dominical, was perfect, this one is far from it. It's not a bad album {By all means no}, but it's not exactly the best follow - up to their MASTERPIECE. So, instead of giving a track - by - track analysis, I will only review the songs I like, starting with...

El Siete De Septiembre: A MASTERPIECE {Third to Heroes De La Antartida}. It's a GREAT song, featuring the best percussion Mecano has used in a long while. The melody, the lyrics/voice, the hidden loops and sounds...everything is combined to make an excellent collage of sounds. MUST - HEAR! The SEVENTH Of September in English.

Naturaleza Muerta: A great, if SAD song. The melody is enough, worthwile of your time {Prepare to spend five minutes}. Not much else to say about the song, except that IT just might remind you of Hermano Sol Hermana Luna {In tone, not sound}.

Tu: It's The MUJER CONTRA MUJER of this album {Only this is FAR superior, and reminds me a lot of El Cine for some reason}. It's been recorded very low, so you might have trouble hearing some lyrics. A MUST - HEAR!

Dalai Lama: OK people, forget what you know about MECANO, because this is like a whole different group. I'll call the group MECANO 2 instead. Therefore, this is their first masterpiece. It's PERFECT! The melody, the sounds, and the PERCUSSION. WOW! When I first heard it I had to listen to it FIVE more times just to capture everything. At the beginning it'll remind you of El Cine, in the middle - beginning it'll remind you of El Siete De Septiembre, and the rest is like a compilation of ALL of Mecano's albums {Including the not - so - good DEBUT!}. People, you HAVE to hear this! The beat is very groovy - like, reminding me a LITTLE bit of Sadeness by ENIGMA {Only...that's a whole different ball - park!}.

Cheers for now and hope you enjoy the whole album {Because it is GREAT!}.

The music of Mecano is magical. When you listen to it you start a travel through emotions you have inside. Maybe You have experianced those feeling or maybe You have not, but they come to you when you listen songs like: Me cuesta tanto olvidarte (It is so hard for me to forget you), El Cine (The cinema), Tú (You), Naturaleza muerta (death nature)and many others. Even instrumentals like: 1917, or Por la cara (by the face) can make you feel sadness, melancholy, happiness, excitement, in love with live and/or with someone special. Mecano created real music, music for the soul and for the body. Enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars TAKES ME BACK.......2000-07-13

I was 13 years old living in Spain when I heard this album. Later that year I moved to Baltimore. 9 years later I still remember the words. When I heard Naturaleza Muerta I cried. If you too grew up with it, and have only recently found it, you'll know what I mean.

    5 out of 5 stars A super album.......1999-10-29

Mecano is a group which I didn't know very much about before. After buying this CD, I am very pleased. I listen to this CD often, it is very relaxing. Their songs actually have meaning which is deep. The tunes are calm and pleasant. Especially the song Dalai Lama which has an interesting tune.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music!.......1998-09-26

I'm not fluent in Spanish, but the music and vocals are fantastic! Ana Torroja is great by herself, but she's better with Mecano. For another great Spanish (actually Latin) singer, try Iran Castillo.

5 out of 5 stars Mi disco favorito de Mecano.......2007-05-12

Por cierto, siempre he detestado 'Aire'.

4 out of 5 stars MECANO ANTES DE "ENTRE EL CIELO Y EL SUELO".......2006-09-06

YA SE NOTABA MUCHA MADUREZ RESPECTO A SUS DOS TRABAJOS ANTERIORES, YA JOSE MARIA CANO HABIA EMPEZADO A COLABORAR EN LAS LETRAS Y LA MUSICA, SE PALPABA EL CONTRASTE ENTRE JOSE MARIA E IGNACIO CANO, CON DOS ESTILOS TOTALMENTE DIFERENTES PERO QUE ANA TORROJA SUPO INTERPRETAR. CANCIONES COMO "HAWAII-BOMBAY", "BUSCO ALGO BARATO", "NO PINTAMOS NADA", Y "ME RIO DE JANEIRO" FUERON MUY SONADAS ESPECIALMENTE EN ESPANA. TODAVIA NO RECIBIAN UN GRAN RECONOCIMIENTO EN LATINOAMERICA.

3 out of 5 stars Más de lo Mismo!.......2005-10-23

VUELVAN A REUNIRSE YA y lanzen material NUEVO!

5 out of 5 stars Another one great Mecano title.......2007-02-27

I owned the cassette when this work was originally released and loved it so i got this CD in order to load the music on my iPod. And... what a nice surprise! the CD has four additional tracks ("El fallo positivo", "El lago artificial", "El peón del rey de negras", "El 7 de septiembre - Acoustic mix").

The whole work is beautiful, its name derives from "Dalai Lama" (one of the songs). In the songs, a ballad or soft pop blends with techno in a fascinating way and the latin air from some songs (i. e. "Bailando salsa", "Una rosa es una rosa") is exquisite and refreshing. Besides that the lyrics are quite poetical, its translation is more than worthwhile.
