Album Description

Smith's organ playing is fluid, sparkling and intelligent. He drives his unique tenor sax-baritone sax-guitar-drums ensemble with soul and intensity. The music really comes to life on live recordings such as "Move Your Hand" and "Live At Club Mozambique," which features George Benson. Ronnie Cuber is the baritone saxophonist on both dates.

Personnel:
George Benson: Guitar.
Ronnie Cuber: Sax (Baritone).
Joe Dukes: Drums.
Dave Hubbard: Sax (Tenor).
Gary Jones: Conga.
Clifford Mack: Tambourine.
Dr. Lonnie Smith: Organ, Vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Let the good times roll!.......2006-11-04

I was on my way to work when I heard Lonnie for the first time on our local Jazz station. I was late getting into work because I had to find out who was doing this tune. It was called "Scream" and was from this live disc. Needless to say, when I got home that day I ordered it right away based on that tune. This whole cd is great! It's got funk, rock, a bit of blues, everything you could want. Lonnie plays a mean organ, and the rest of the band is just tight! There's a young George Benson on guitar, and even the tamborine player gets a credit! This is great music, check it out!

5 out of 5 stars A pivotal album fron the Doctor.......2006-02-13

This was my first LP with Lonnie Smith in the early 70's and it blew my pants off! I knew Lonnie from my George Benson Quartet albums, but this was something different to Smith's, Griff's, McDuff's and the other great soul organists. The rock-bottom funk, blues and "obscure" rhytms supported by free-blowing saxophonists, a rock steady organ bass line and good rhytm section, make this 1970 album a pivotal in the Lonnie Smith discography. And since Lonnie and Cuber has signed this CD during Oslo Jazz Festival in 2002, this CD has a special place in my almost complete Lonnie Smith collection.

5 out of 5 stars Play It Back.......2005-04-17

Not only is Lonnie Smith "Live At Club Mozambique" the greatest Dr. Lonnie Smith album, it's the greatest live organ combo album of all-time. This is the most soulful performance captured on tape. It's too bad it took 25 years for Blue Note to release it.

You'll be blown away by the Doctor's funky bass playing on James Brown's "I Can't Stand It", the percolating rhythm of "Scream", and the intensity of "Love Bowl". What Lonnie's performances lack in technical brilliance are more than compensated by his great soul, taste, and restraint. Fans of Lou Donaldson, Charles Earland, Jimmy Smith, and Eddie Harris should enjoy this album.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars bad mutha!.......2004-01-15

my fiancee bought me this for christmas and im telling you, its one bad mutha of an album! "cant stand it" comes on and youre thinking "this is pretty fine" and then that bass rumbles in like theres no tomorrow and your jaw drops! gave me goosebumps the first time i heard it! i am a james brown freak and i usually dont want to hear any JB covers but this has got to be JB approved! its smokin'! its strange to hear george benson who sounds like hes been to the grant green school of music. hes funky, and fast, but no grant(i just love the green!). really though these guys are all bad, lonnie rips it on organ, and the energy is ridiculous!

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE ONE- ON THE ONE! THA FUNKAY ONE!.......2003-11-26

This is the album I want with me everywhere. I keep the original in a safe place and I have burned copies in my car and at work. I never! never! want to be without this up-lifting funky masterpiece. I can listen to this from beginning to end over and over again- it's just that good. I recommend this over MOVE YOUR HAND for a first purchase, because all the players are up front in volume and Funky as Hell. Another favorite of this genre is Jimmy Smith-Root Down [LIVE] and anything that has Idris Muhammad (the original funky drummer)on it.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-12-08

If alive and live at the lighthouse didn't exist this would be my favorite grant green album the mix isn't as goog as the other live albums because the 24 track master tapes were missing and this was taken from a mono recording but the guitar is still funky and overall an interesting selection of songs. This is a beautiful album that anybody who has listened to live at the lighthouse , or Alive! will surely appreciate.

4 out of 5 stars Not my favorite live Green album, but a good listen.......2006-09-29

If you're looking for a funky Green outing..you will find some hintings of it here...this album precedes "Alive" and "Live at the Lighthouse" and shows a bit of restraint compared to the latter two. I'd start with "Alive", then try on "Live at the Lighthouse" and finally buy "Live at Club Mozambique as a finish...

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2000-01-22

This is a nice, upbeat recording - danceable, fun. One of the instruments they've incorporated here is what sounds like a telephone bell - very distracting at first, but it grows on you. Sounds a little bit reggae, a little bit South African, a little bit West African, familiar enough to enjoy right away, but enough of a challenge to keep you listening more than once.

After a 10-year interruption, Eyuphuro's sparkling comeback album is a kind of Rosetta Stone of classic African pop. "Othiawene" sails in on the classic rumba beat that dominated the continent for decades. Three guitars parry and swirl, a tenor sax pipes out a call, and the "golden voice of Mozambique," Zena Bacar, flaunts a lovely innocence not too far removed from the pre-benga vocal sound of Kenya. Singer-songwriter Issufo Manuel sets a lyric about a husband's search for his wife against a rhythm reminiscent of Zimbabwean pop. In one ear, flinty fingerpicking recalls Thomas Mapfumo's chimurenga style derived from mbira thumb-piano spirit songs. In the other ear, smooth, languid guitar lines suggest the radio-friendly jit of the Bhundu Boys. In the center, a third guitar tosses off chunky jazz phrases. Most songs work in marrabenta percussion unique to Mozambique. "Ethuila Exeni" percolates with a spare but complex local backbeat that adds tension to a melancholy piece about misunderstandings between elders and youth. Midsong, the tempo shifts. The percussionists speed up and close in on Manuel, who opens up his heartfelt vocal even wider. It's an extraordinary album, all the more so because Bacar and her group recorded it under difficult conditions in a studio in Maputo rather than simply making the disc in Europe. That gesture of hope and resurrection pulses through every song. --Bob Tarte

          Album Description

In the hot and dusty Gaza province of Mozambique there is a small lake called Ghorwane that never runs dry, even in the hottest season. In 1983, a group of young musicians in Maputo, Mozambique, took this name as they launched their musical career. Today, Ghorwane is one of Moambique's most respected bands. Ghorwane base their sound on traditional Mozambican rhythms combined with Afro-pop and fusion to create a sound where the best Afro beats meet African jazz. It is a mixture of traditional African flavors spiced with Portuguese and Brazilian influences.

5 out of 5 stars Palmieri at his best.......2004-10-22

"Mambo con conga is MOZAMBIQUE", released on TICO in '65, is Palmieri's best work, after "El Sonido Nuevo". Although his previous albums are also quite good ("El Molestoso", "Echando P'alante", "Azucar Pa'Ti"), Mozambique's sound is crisper, the conga and timbal is more prominent, Castro's flute is impressive, and Quintana's vocals have improved. The album covers rhythm styles such as mozambique, cha cha, guaracha, and comparsa.

          5 out of 5 stars Old-style vocals accompany sparse &precise acoustic styles.......2004-09-02

t's amazing how much the guitar took over African music during the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s: traditional African instrumentations were disappearing and the guitar was 'king' and at its height in the 1950s.
The old-style vocals accompany sparse and precise acoustic styling in FORGOTTEN GUITARS, especially recommended for collectors of historic field recordings or enthusiasts of old-style African music.
