Even Better Than Volume One.......2005-03-06

Anyone knows that one disc can't possibly hold all of Rod Stewart's best songs, so naturally a second volume will have to be made. "Encore: The Very Best Of - Vol. 2" adds 18 Stewart classics not found on 2001's "The Very Best Of Rod Stewart". This disc has some great stuff on it, and is actually slightly better than the first volume.

"Encore" features pretty much every significant hit not featured on the first volume, from the soulful "The Motown Song" to the turbo charged rocker "Lost In You" to the new wave synth pop chugger "Baby Jane" to the somber " I Was Only Joking", you will find that you will love every song on this cd (even the much criticized "Love Touch" (which is one of my all time favorites). This set is also notable for inckuding Rod's popular on radio but otherwise hard to find cover of Carole King's "So Far Away" and "Don't Come Around Here" from 2001's "Human". Plus, anyone who's only familliar with Sheryl Crow's version of "The First Cut Is The Deepest" should really listen to Rod's version. It's truly better.

An added bonus to this disc is a booklet with commentary on each track and how it came into being, given to to you by none other than Rod. A great collection of Rod's music. Get this one as well as volume one.

Better than Volume 1 or that Greatest Hits! .......2005-01-10

I liked that he put out a second album of his greatest hits on Warner Bros. And clever since he's finishing out his contract with them because he's on J now. But this album has songs he left out on the first one. I like that Crazy About Her is on here, for I played that the most from Out of Order! Very big sound on it! Infatuation I still love. And Passion is another solid song on here. There are some bluesy numbers,some soul-driven numbers and rockers here too. I loved his version of That's What Friends are For, even if Dionne Warwick's version was a big hit in late '85. It's kind of mixed up, not in chronological order, but the songs blend well. Stewart may be on this standards thing now, but pop/rock is what he can do the best and he should go back to it for his next album. This album just demonstrates his many talents as a singer and artist.

More Classics From Rock's Spanner In The Works.......2004-11-02

Rod Stewart is a singer whose appeal has probably outlasted anyone in rock and roll with the exception the Beatles, the Stones and Elvis. He is adored by millions young and old. He has been named a perosnal favorite singer by every singer, from Elton John to Lindsay Lohan. Plus, he had an incredible run of hits between 1971 and 1998: 35 top 40 singles, 14 top 10 hits, 3 number one records (including one that was on top for 8 weeks). "Voice - The Very Best Of Rod Stewart" featured 16 of those hits. It had all his most memorable work on just one disc. It was excellent, but there was something missing. That missing void was filled with "Encore: Very Best Of 2".

This cd includes most of those remaining hits, including "Love Touch" (don't tell me anything bad about this song, because I love it), "Crazy About Her", "Passion", and the uplifting "The Motown Song". Also included is a vast number of underrated songs like "Broken Arrow", his original version "That's What Friends Are For" (not as good as Dionne Warwick's version, but it's still good), "I Don't Want To Talk About It", and "I Was Only Joking". Fans may miss "Handbags And Gladrags" and "The Killing Of Georgie Pts. 1 and 2", but that's a matter of opinion.

Get this and "Voice", and you're well on your way to owning all of Rod Stewart's best cds. Also pick up "Gasoline Alley", "Every Picture Tells A Story", "Out Of Order" and "Vagabond Heart", all great albums. Oh yeah, and the 3 "Great American Songbook" cds. They show how versatile the Rodmeister really is.

Rhino Records finishes what it started with "The Best of the Girl Groups, Vol.2," giving us another good-sounding, good collection of girl group standards, some better-known than others, from the Great Age of the Girl Groups,the early 1960's, before the British Invasion drove the girls from the charts. And once again, the melodic hand of those Brill Building songwriters is much in evidence.

The collection opens with The Angels' hit, "My Boyfriend's Back." This is a pretty white bread-sounding song; and believe me --I've seen them-- the Angels were kind of a white bread group. But the lyric is pretty flavorful: legend says the songwriter, at a diner, just wrote down a waitress's outburst at a guy who'd obviously pushed her too far. "Sweet Talking Guy," by the Chiffons, follows; plenty of Bronx flavor to this one. I've also seen them perform, and let me tell you, these were girls who still got a kick out of singing, and hitting those notes. Then follows a great dancing song, "The Locomotion," sung by Little Eva, whom, legend says, was the maid of Carole King, who wrote it with her usual partner, Gerry Goffin. Carole King also sings "It Might As Well Rain Until September," the only one of her many creations on which she, herself, had the hit. Ellie Greenwich, another Brill Building regular, much better known as a songwriter than performer, sings her own "You Don't Know." The Toys give us a song I particularly loved, and still do, "Lovers Concerto;" legend says the immortal classical composer Friedrich Handel ("Music for the Royal Fireworks") gave them the music for that one. The Cookies contribute two more dance numbers -- those girls could rock: "Chains," and "Don't Say Nothing Bad About My Baby." Those perennial favorites, the Shirelles, give us "I Met Him on a Sunday." The Exciters give us another good dancing song, "Tell Him," and Essex comes in with another one, "Easier Said Than Done."

Once again, there are no representatives from Motown, Phil Spector's Gold Star Studios, or Philadelphia's Cameo Studios, and that leaves out a lot of great songs. The selection of songs on Vol. 2 is also not quite up to that on the first volume, but it still brings together a lot of songs that a lot of people love, and haven't been able to find. Worth getting if the budget allows.

Most of these songs are goodies from the 60's...2 or 3 songs were completely unknown to me, but the others made up for it...I know all the words!! (of course I'm over 13....that's why I know all the words!)

This complilation of music with the various artists on this one CD is great. The choices of the songs in this order seems to flow very smoothly. I recommend the other volumes 1,3 and 4 to complete the set. I have been searching for more in this style but no other can match this Smooth Jazz set. This is a wise investment.

What a super compilation. The name is actually a bit of a misnomer. A lot of the music here is not merely smooth jazz instrumentals. Most are actually smooth R&B vocals. No matter, this is a great CD. You may not know all the songs by title, however you will recognize them when you hear the CD. Almost worth the price of admission is the inclusion of the Al Jarreau/David Sanborn/Bob James version of "Since I Fell For You". Every song is a solid 10, plus this is a definite "Shut Up and Kiss Me" romantic CD.

Earth, Wind & Fire retained their hit-making touch into the '80s, as this sequel to their 1978 best-of makes clear with "Let's Groove" (1981) and "Turn On (The Beat Box)" (1988). Still, the disc concentrates on their '70s work, from the early "Mighty Mighty" to the later, slightly slicker "Boogie Wonderland" and "After the Love Is Gone." And those who can't get enough of "Fantasy," which appeared on volume 1, will be glad to see it repeated here. --Rickey Wright

Good Collection.......2006-09-04

back in the day I mainly bought this for the fact that "Love's Holiday" was on it. always had to collect EWF Albums back in the day. I wasn't feeling there WHitney Houston lite cut "Turn on the Beatbox" which was a Poor Man's "Let's Groove". alot of the tracks on here have the 70's Greatness of there Peak&prime time form. EWF along with the Isley brothers are my all time favorite bands.

I own both Best of CD's by EWF. I am glad that I do. This one completes what I feel are some of their best songs!!! I am surprised at all of the negative reviews! Maybe I missed something??? My favorites on this one are Turn On (The Beat Box), Let's Groove, After The Love Is Gone, and Devotion. I wasn't that much of a fan of EWF till recently...so, maybe they are what I have missed all along.

Earth,Wind & Fire's first greatest hits album is so musically well constructed it's almost worth those who own the albums already to have it.The same isn't true with this one-tune's like "Love's Holiday","Serpentine Fire","Mighty Mighty" and "Boogie Wonderland" are classics but the overall album doesn't flow together half as well as the first.The juxtaposition of era's is jarring too-the production and style of some of the songs have too much of a range and makes it seem well....dated in parts.Better to purchase the chronological and extensive 'Eternal Dance' box set-it has ALL the hits in the proper order and is frankly better mastered.

Love's Holiday is encluded which is strangely absent on some other collections.......2005-07-26

Better than the First.......2003-08-14

I have both MTV Unplugged compilations and I am always listenings to this version. This Version has Elton John, Sheryl Crow, Midnight Oil and a host of other great groups and songs. It is well worth it to get this album. The Sheryl Crow song is espially good, she does a piano solo through most of the song that is very good that seems to go back to her early childhood days. But don't get me wrong it's tough to find a bad song on this album.

The glory days of Led Zeppelin are chronicled comprehensively in Atlantic Record's 1999 Early Days best-of set, which leaves this '73-to-'79 package shorter on obvious crowd-pleasers. Still, this secondary set shows just how powerful Zeppelin were at their zenith. Taken from the band's final four albums, the songs here--"No Quarter," "Houses of the Holy," and "Song Remains the Same" among them--brought audiences to their feet in stadiums across the world while the Zeppelin juggernaut trampled their competition underfoot. Zeppelin defined hard rock, but were also capable of a delicacy that's easy to overlook; indeed, that dimension is missing from the picture of Zep offered here. Song Remains the Same poor version, Is there better? .......2007-02-02

Well these 2 songs I was looking for in newer cd like this to see if they are more powerful than original due to clean up, and they are, Achilles Last Stand, Nobody's Fault But Mine. you can hear the dif when you turn it up. loudness is not the same as power, you can have loudness but that doesnt mean you have the power of the song, you can have power, and that can mean "real" clear loudness.

However, the one song I really bought this for, because I really love Bonham in it, is Song Remains The Same. But it falls way soft. no power at all. Same as No Quarter, flat. Is because the songs are much older and on "lesser" masters? well I dont get that then because Who The West Was Won is 1972 and is the best sounding cd around.

So anyhoo, can anyone tell me a great version of Song Remains? I know the Live version on the movie sound track is the best I have heard, but I am not going to buy that just for one song, for I have all the rest of the songs elsewhere. I already wasted money on this cd. How The West Was Won is great, only it doesnt have Song Remains, and everything else after 1 and 2, but I know I have heard a really good version of Song Remains.

Is there another live version of it? or do I just have to suck it up and buy the movie cd to get it. or is this even the one i am used to hearing on the radio at times? I know I hear a live version, Its the only one I know of. the drumming on it really pops. way more than the studio version.

The (Sort of) Best of Led Zeppelin.......2006-02-15

As a rule, best of albums are rarely better than the individual albums. Led Zeppelin shows this in a way that few others can. The seperate records, isolated, are concise enough to not sound odd together. The latter days collection of Led Zeppelin leaves some to be desired (Namely, the lack of space on a single CD). "Latter days" could be useful for somebody who hadn't ever heard Led Zeppelin before. It includes a smattering of songs, from their several later albums (no longer named after the band), almost all of which I like. The individual songs are rated below:

1. The Song Remains The Same - 7/10
The Song Remains The Same is one of those songs that never really stands out, but is good in its own right. The vocal effects can get a little tedious after several listens, and the bass sounds a tad thin, but otherwise it is a typical Zeppelin Song.

2. No Quarter - 9/10
An excellent song. Some kind of keyboard starts the track, and gives it the sad feel that it maintains for the rest of the song. It has many pauses, which some may dislike. The guitar is simple (for Page) and the voice is nice, but rarely heard. The drums are excellent. Overall, one of my favorites.

3. Houses of the Holy - 8/10
Not outstanding, but still fun to listen to. It has the excellent groove that comes with most of Led Zeppelin's hard rock songs. Catchy tune and the classic Led Zeppelin Sound.

4. Trampled Underfoot - 8/10
Awesome keyboard hook, but gets a little dull after a while. The strong point in this track is definetly the guitar and keyboard. Otherwise, a rather ordinary track.

5. Kashmir - 10/10
Such an awesome groove. A trademark track (and for a good reason, too). Robert Plant refrains from his high-pitched cries and allows for an easily listenable song. Very catchy, and one of those songs that would make you look so cool if it were playing in the background as you walk...

6. Ten Years Gone - 7/10
Cool song. Slow start, that slowly builds up to Page's "Wall of guitars". Not exceptional, but a necessity nonetheless.

7. Achilles Last Stand - 9/10
One of Led Zeppelin's longest songs. However, despite being over ten minutes long, it manages to sound like a far shorter song, which is the mark of an excellent song.

8. Nobody's Fault But Mine - 10/10
My favorite on the album. Multitracked guitar, with Plant's voice following the guitar sometimes, sometimes going off on its own. The bass combines with the drums to make them sound more powerful. The bridge is complex to play, easy to follow, and just sounds so cool.

9. All of My Love - 6/10
Very experimental for Led Zeppelin. Sometimes Robert Plant's voice's pitch changes for the worse making this song slightly annoying. Nothing exceptional about any of the instumental work, and doesn't entirely live up to the Led Zeppelin standard. However, the orchestra sounds very consice with the rest of the song.

10. In The Evening - 8/10
The beginning is very similar-sounding to "In the Light," off of Physical Graffiti. However, during the rest of the song, it blossoms into the hard-rockers that Zeppelin is known for. Definitely a good song, but not one of my favorites.

In Conclusion, Latter Days is an album for people just getting into Led Zeppelin, or just casual fans. Happy Listening!

No Matter Who You Are, This Album Is Probably Not For You........2006-01-11

Looking over the songlists for both Early Days and Latter Days, I am often baffled as to who these compilations are aimed at. (My 2 star rating is obviously more a criticism of the compilation than the music itself, which is 5 stars all the way).

So, are you an existing Zeppelin fan? Then chances are that you already have every one of these songs. There's nothing new or contraversial here. Certainly you should have all of Early Days (which comprises the hits from Led Zeppelin I-IV) and much of this CD.

If you don't own these tracks yet, you would be MUCH better off to invest in "Houses of the Holy" and "Physical Grafitti" INSTEAD. You'd get the first six (out of ten) tracks from Latter Days, as well as the inexplicably absent: "In My Time of Dying", "The Rain Song", "Over The Hills And Far Away", "D'yer Mak'er" and "The Ocean".

Are you just discovering Led Zeppelin? (If so, savour these first listens.) Or a casual fan who doesn't own any albums? DON'T START WITH THIS. Zeppelin is just not a "hot singles" band, you NEED to invest in a few full albums; I can guarantee that you won't regret it.

There's obviously room for negotiation on which of those albums are "better" and given the depth of Zeppelin's catalogue you'd be hard-pressed to choose a best release. But, one thing I can say for sure is that any Zepp fan (new or old) is better served buying some of these albums rather than Early and/or Latter Days.

Where the hell is "The Wanton Song"? I mean, this is one of their hardest rocking songs, off of Physical Graffiti. I also think "Houses of the Holy" should have been taken off, and instead, they should have had "In My Time of Dying". Track listings:

Not really all that good..........2005-11-20

Okay, Early Days has a bunch of masterworks by Zeppelin. Latter Days, on the contrary, only has one great song, a couple good songs, but mostly average material.
Song Remains the Same...I think this one's a bit overrated myself. A lot of Zeppelin fans would argue, but it just isn't there. The rhythm section is solid, but the guitarwork is merely average and Plant's delivery just hurts my ears. No Quarter would be etter if it were HARDER!!! I mean it, the idea of presenting the band as sort of like the Nazgul from Lord of the Rings was good, but it's a bit boring. Not as bad as Houses of the Holy, though. The word "Dull" doesn't begin to describe it. Trampled Underfoot is a great, riff driven tune.
Then there's Kashmir, by far the band's most overrated song. What's so bad about it? For one, it just drags forever, making those eight-and-a-half minutes feel like eight-and-a-half hours. For another, Robert Plant sounds like he had just smoked a good fifty packs before the song was recorded. For all I know, he did. For a third, the lyrics definetly are NOT there. The string arrangements are brilliant, but get old after awhile. Ten Years Gone is decent, I guess. I mean, at least it's listenable (unlike Kashmir!)
Achilles Last Stand would be, by far, the best song on this disc and the longest. I love Last Stand and you should too. Sadly, it's all downhill from here, starting with the endless blues Nobody's Fault But Mine, and continuing with the In Through the Out Door material. The last two songs seem like Zeppelin Sells Out. Where are the classic riffs and crashing drums that made Zep famous? Lost. What's in their place? Synthesizers. Lots of synthesizers. In their struggle to keep up with the times, they betrayed their roots and created two amazing bores (All My Love and In the Evening).
Inessential, but it sure is better than buying all the later albums!

Sequels to best-of collections tend to be a bit suspect, unless, of course, the band in question had an exceptionally long run that was prematurely anthologized midway through. In the case of this posthumous souvenir of the Smiths' four-year career, casual fans may be disappointed to find that you can't sulk to "Girlfriend in a Coma" (like most of their hits, it's on volume one) or even moo along to "Meat Is Murder" (saved for a projected volume three?). Then again, Morrissey and Johnny Marr were anything but one-hit wonders, and tracks such as "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" and "Bigmouth Strikes Again" make it clear the band could turn out high-quality, hummable odes to melancholia until the cows come home, which, by the time of this 1992 anthology, they already had. --Bill Forman

Half a collection........2005-11-29

The Smiths are an amazing band, these are incredible songs, and this is a decent collection. I had this disc once and always felt I was missing something, and that was "Volume 1". These 14 songs are wonderful again, but if you don't get this with "Volume 1", skip it. For one-stop shopping, I might suggest "Singles", which is 18 tracks on one disc, and more bang for your buck. If price is no factor, go for the remastered import "Very Best Of" which is 23 tracks long. I'd even recommend the 24 track "Louder Than Bombs", though that's missing a few essential songs. Obviously you have many choices, but only 14 Smiths songs is not a good one.

Forget what some Smiths fans might tell you..........2004-01-10

... this Best of, along with Vol. I, represent the greatest of what the band has to offer. I own all of the original albums, yet keep coming back to the Best Of's. This is a great place to begin, then if you just gotta have more, delve into the back catalogue... there are a few more gems not represented in this collection. But hey, it's the Smiths... almost everything they released was fabulous. This set is pure gold, opening with my favorite Smiths single, "Boy With the Thorn in His Side." It combines all the elements that made the group special... Marr's spot-on rhythmic strumming, tasteful string swells, a gorgeous and yearning vocal turn from Morrisey, and melody that instantly hooks you. And look... my 2nd favorite Smiths single is also here... "Bigmouth Strikes Again!" The drumming and guitar work will take your breath away. This is a band working with tremendous drive and sense of purpose. My favorite non-single LP track is "Reel Around the Fountain," and its joys may be a little harder to define, but every time I hear it, I sink into a trance and hang onto every note. The key is somewhere in Morrisey's voice... he sounds frozen by emotion, overwhelmed and utterly sincere. Then a totally different vocal approach on "Headmaster's Ritual"... the way he spits out the words, "spineless swine, cemented minds" is classic. "Ask" is another wonderful single... a departure for the band and not one of Marr's favorites, but touched by magic. "Last Night I Dreamt" is the Smiths at their most over-the-top dramatic, but the grandeur of the track makes it work, as if Cecile B. DeMille were cutting a pop record! I won't analyze the rest, but only in interest of space and time... buy this album now!

I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys listening to The Smiths. Even if you're not a hard-core fan, the songs on this CD will bring back some awesome memories of days gone by when 'must see TV' meant watching MTV's 120 minutes to see the videos that went along with these songs. You can't go wrong with this CD!!!!!!!

This band put out so many great songs that one is hard pressed to pinpoint their best album. Purists will scorn that I picked this one, and instead refer to the individual albums this collection came from. I have all the individual albums, but I especially like this one. You get The Headmaster's Ritual, Big Mouth Strikes Again, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, and the dramatic "Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me," (I have a taste for Drama)and many other greats all on one disc. Another winning CD is "Louder Than Bombs."

In a decade known for big hair and cheesy corporate rock, the chemistry of Morrissey's witty lyrics paired w/Johnny Marr's great guitar, created a magical combination. They were great in the same way that the Beatles were great. I have often felt pity for any kid coming of age in the Reagan-Bush era, and I have looked on such kids as culturally deprived waifs. Thankfully, there were some true greats and even geniuses who emerged in the 80's. It proves that in the murky grays or even complete darkness, there will always be some bright lights somewhere if you look for them.

The Best, Volume 2 doesn't disappoint........2001-03-27

I have owned this album for about five years and this is one that I can always return to and enjoy again and again. Their style is very unique to the time. Their guitar licks, that are reminiscent of the Stray Cats and Morrissey's unusual voice, make this the best album anyone can have in their collection. They were truly ahead of their time.

Two More Years of Dirt.......2005-07-12

This is the follow up compilation to the 20 Years of Dirt album. It features the bands "country" hits that were released in 1987 and 1988, two older hits that were left off the first compilation and two non-hits. It fills in some of the holes, but not all of them, by any means.

Good Stuff.......2005-02-27

I've always enjoyed the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They play some great music with nice harmonies and mandolins...yes, mandolins. I'm a sucker for that instrument. This particular greatest hits offering includes some of their biggest hits from the 80's. Just about everybody knows "Fishin' In The Dark," which, in my opinion, is one of the best country songs every placed on vinyl, or a cassette, or a disc. "I've Been Lookin'" and "Baby's Got A Hold On Me" are also here. Those three songs alone are worth the price of this disc.

Other highlights include "Face On The Cutting Room Floor," "Oh What A Love," and "Down That Road Tonight."

In summary, if you're interested in groups like Shenandoah, Restless Heart, and the Eagles, you'll probably enjoy these guys. They are more country than Restless Heart and the Eagles, but they don't have that forced "twang" that lingers on some of Shenandoah's songs.

A definite buy.

Humble Name, Real Roots Rock Legends.......2003-06-06

The follow-up to the original "best of" NGDB collection, More Great Dirt, consists of more of the 80's country hits during their long career. The NGDB was once a folk and country-rock band, but the majority of the songs on More Great Dirt come from their mainstream country days, which were the most overlooked of their albums. They really had no one big radio hit during this time (except for "Fishin' In the Dark), which hurts this record, as does the fact that it is very overshadowed by the "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" albums that were huge hits. The highlights of the album include the summertime hit "Fishin' in the Dark," Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch," and the rocking "Down That Road Tonight." It is too bad that there are only ten tracks here. In my opinion, this isn't up to par with the classic NGDB, but it is still good, quality country and folk. A good purchase if you want an overview of their latter days.

Another great NGDB "best of" collection.......2003-01-08

More Great Dirt is the follow-up to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's previous "best of" collection, Twenty Years Of Dirt. This record, like Twenty Years Of Dirt, consists mainly of hit songs from the '80s, the period when NGDB made a transition from being a progressive country-rock band to a mainstream country act. Like Twenty Years Of Dirt, More Great Dirt is a solid collection of the Dirt Band's hit songs. Indeed, in my opinion, this record tops Twenty Years Of Dirt despite its lack of a "classic" NGDB hit song(for instance, "Mr. Bojangles" and "Long Hard Road"). Even if hardly anybody listens to these songs a long time from now, I think the songs the Dirt Band chose to put on More Great Dirt are among their best. This record may have gotten overlooked by some listeners because NGDB released it in '89, the same year they came out with their platinum-selling Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Volume 2. After listening to More Great Dirt, however, I don't think you should pass it up. By itself, it's a great record.

Like other Dirt Band records I have, this one has a lot of highlights. It starts out with NGDB's version of "Cadillac Ranch", the classic Bruce Springsteen song, with lead vocals by Jeff Hanna and Jimmy Ibbotson. There are also Ibbotson's joyful ballad "Oh What A Love"; the upbeat summer song "Fishin' In The Dark", which topped the country charts in '87; Hanna and Ibbotson's toe-tapping song "I've Been Lookin'"; "Workin' Man(Nowhere To Go)", charter NGDB member Jimmie Fadden's song about the tribulations of the displaced farmer; and the rocking songs "Baby's Got A Hold On Me" and "Down That Road Tonight". Finally, the Dirt Band, as they did on Twenty Years Of Dirt, included their best songs from the early '80s. Besides "Cadillac Ranch", NGDB's early '80s hits which are on here include "Home Again In My Heart", "I Love Only You", and "Face On The Cutting Room Floor". There are no Bob Carpenter lead vocals here(unlike "Stand A Little Rain" on Twenty Years Of Dirt), but Carpenter's solid piano and accordion work are obvious on most of the songs.

On More Great Dirt, NGDB not only matched Twenty Years Of Dirt, but they did even better. My only criticism of this record--and my gripe is a minor one--is that, like a previous reviewer, I don't think it's long enough. Ten songs don't completely capture NGDB's musical ability, and I think some of my fellow Dirt Band fans will complain that even after a couple of "best of" collections, there are still some NGDB hit songs that haven't made it onto a "best of" album. Still, I don't see how anybody wouldn't like this record. There are no obvious attempts by the Dirt Band to appeal to their "pop" fans(which is what I think "Fire In The Sky" was on Twenty Years Of Dirt). Instead, what you'll get when you listen to More Great Dirt is a great collection of hit country songs by a group who makes high-quality music even if their songs don't always end up on the charts. Don't miss this one--I think you'll be impressed.

Terrific Eighties Dirt Band Collection (But Skimpy).......2000-04-03

For Most of the Eighties (and the Nineties, too, for that matter), the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band decided they were not a jug band/roots rock/bluegrass/country-rock band. Instead, they were a country band. And by and large, country music was all the better for it. Granted, the NGDB's albums beginning with American Dream in 1979 would be of mixed quality (even though I dutifully bought them all).

So what you get here on Vol. II are the highlights of those albums. Gems like Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch," the joyous "Fishin' in the Dark," the rousing "Baby's Got a Hold on Me" and the melancholy "Face on the Cutting Room Floor." Other highlights are original songs like Jimmy Ibbotson and Jeff Hanna's "I've Been Lookin'," Ibbotson's "Oh What a Love" and Jimmie Fadden's "Workin' Man (Nowhere to Go)." The songs feature impeccable playing, tight harmonies and just enough mandolin, steel guitar and banjo to lend an authenticity lacking in much of Nashville's cookie-cutter approach to country music.

Compiled by Morrison himself, this 1993 collection focuses mainly on his work from 1984-1991. Representing a period during which Morrison scored very few popular hits, the majority of the record's 15 tracks are probably fairly obscure to people other than diehard fans. Nevertheless, this is a vital introduction to Morrison's later, more idiosyncratic material. Many of the songs are marked by an intense, spiritual longing and deal on a very mature level with Morrison's quest for religious fulfillment. For instance, "Real Real Gone" (from 1990's Enlightenment) and "In the Garden" (from 1986's No Guru, No Method, No Teacher) play like an inspired hybrid of gospel and Irish folk music. Somewhat inexplicably, Morrison also includes two songs from his mid-'60s group Them, a cover of John Lee Hooker's "Don't Look Back" and a cover of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue." --Ian Landau

WARNING: the music that Morrison played in the 1980's is different from his 70's music. Fans of that period may not like this period as much. Personally, I prefer his 80's albums (and hate the 90's stuff)

This compilation is an overview of Morrison's music with his new record company from 1984 to 1991. His previous 1980's Warner Brothers albums - Common One, Beautiful Vision and Inarticulate Speech of the Heart - aren't represented here (the best tracks from these underrated albums would make a cool compilation).

This isn't really a 'best of' album as it misses radio friendly songs like 'Tore Down A La Rimbaud', 'Ivory Tower', Youth of 1,000 Summers' and 'Someone Like You'. Also, four songs from this period are on Best Of Vol. 1. (which is a very poorly sequenced compilation of brilliant songs - for every great song another deserving song is missing).

This wonderful collection, with songs selected by Morrison himself (a maximum of 2 songs from each album), has only a few minor mistakes that are easily fixed with the CD player programme mode.

The first 5 songs are great and the sequencing is perfect. The sixth song, 'I'll Tell Me Ma' from Irish Heartbeat - his Irish album -seems out of place. After the 2 previous slower songs an uptempo song is needed, but a jaunty Irish jig isn't it. The next song, track seven, the poetic 'Cony Island', also doesn't fit. Here, the song is sequenced close to two other 'poetry pieces' - track five 'A Sense of Wonder' and track nine 'Rave on John Donne'. Perhaps it's too much poetry in too short a time frame. Because of this the track doesn't shine like it did on the Avalon Sunset album where it seems *much* prettier. On the original tape of Best Of 2 this song was at the end of side 1. Now it's just stuck in the middle of the disc.

The next 2 songs are great, especially the live and extended version of 'Rave On John Donne'; he may flub a line and his sax solo isn't the best (I an not a big fan of his sax SOUND) but the band is great and, after he introduces them, I wish the song went on longer.

Next up is the other mistake: 2 songs from his band Them. These are cover versions, aren't compatable with the rest of the allbums sound and aren't among the band's, or his, best work.

The remainder of the album is great. The song 'One Irish Rover' was a revelation to me. It's from his No Guru, No Method, No Teacher album. I must have listened to side one of that album the most (think vinyl) or didn't appreciate the song because it was burried at the end of that long album, but in the context of Best Of Vol. 2 it really shines and seems a much more powerful song.

The song 'Hymns To The Silence' is worth the price of admission and justifies this purchase. The style and sound of that song fits in perfectly with the other songs on this collection. The original album of the same name is a 2 disc collection of gospel,blues and jazz that I really dislike (God knows, I've tried to like it). Personally, I think that Hyms To The Silence is the only GREAT song on that entire double album. Get it here and save the cost of a double CD.

The last song on the album, 'Evening Meditation' is really nice, but it sounds better on the original album as track 3 and not burried at the end of an album as it is here. Side 1 of A Sense Of Wonder is one of my favorite Morrison sides because it was the first Morrison album (think vinyl) I ever bought.

To summarize, when I put on this disc I edit out tracks 6&7 and 10&11; all of the tracks fall into place perfedtly. If I want to hear more at the end I don't play 'Evening Meditation' and put on side 1 of A Sense of Wonder.

This is a great album of his under appreciated 80's work.

OBSCURE BUT BEAUTIFUL.......2003-10-28

What this album lacks in cohesion is compensated for by its charming stylistic variety. The two cover versions Don't Look Back and It's All Over Now Baby Blue stand out because they do not overtly reflect Morrison's contemplative side and they date from an earlier era, but they are beautiful and moving too.

The other songs are music of deep spiritual yearning in various styles. These include the catchy pop of Real Real Gone, the spoken poetry and social commentary of Rave On John Donne, the poignant childhood reminiscing of Coney Island, the gentle, evocative strains of Sense Of Wonder and the engaging gospel sounds of Hymns To The Silence.

I would have also expected to find the track Be Thou My Vision from the Hymns album here, as it is a passionately numinous listening experience but the artist was the compiler and this selection is his personal choice.

The fact that these tracks are relatively obscure only enhances the listening experience, proving that some of Van's least commercially successful work has grown in stature down the years and that his output has been consistently excellent.

Volume 2 is mostly a "magical mystical tour".......2002-07-17

Wonderful music from Van "the Man" - and I agree with other reviews that it does provide an excellent introduction to Van's music from the 1ate 1970's - 1980's period. I loved his volume one greatest hits, but of the two, I actually prefer to listen to Voume 2. "Real Real Gone" is a great track, much like some of the more famous hits from Volume 1 and I do like the two songs from "Them" but it is Van's mystical, spiritual music on this album that I rate as Van's very best stuff. "Coney Island's" calming music provides a background for Van's prose and this is a delight no matter how many times it is played. This song is followed by the wonderful "Enlightment" - from the opening chords that remind me of the dawning of a new day to the end of this song, we hear beautiful music and the yearnings of a poet in search of the meanings of life. "Rave on John Donne/Rave on Part Two" captures Van live at the gran Opera House in Belfast - great song. I like all of the tracks on this album, and the fact that I haven't heard them so much through the years is actually a plus (Brown-Eyed Girl was one of my favorite songs as a teenager, but I have heard it SOOOO many times, you know?) Highly recommended.

Everyone knows that the many comapilations of the original Band are great. This is Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, and Rick Danko in the 1990's and it is the best cuts of the 3 LP's they did then. Nothing second rate here with Bob Dylan's Blind Wille McTell and Spribgteen's Atlantic City the standouts. Fans of the Band will probably get a lot more enjoyment out of this than Robbie Robertson's solo projects. These cuts got almost zero radio play so you may be hearing most of them for the first time. That was radio's mistake not the Band's.

This album is an excellent overview of songs by the 90's era Band. It is a great selection of songs including Bob Dylans' Forever Young and is a reminder of The Band's roots flavored music in the late 60's. If you don't have the three albums put out by The Band in the 90's (i.e. without Robbie Robertson) - buy it. I don't think you will be disappointed.

The abscence of Robbie Robertson in the Band has never been a factor. The spirit they possesed in the late 60's and early 70's leading up to "The Last Waltz" is.

This is undeliably Band music. Levon Helm is a painfully honest vocalist who sings as if he stuck himself with the pen while writing the song. Unfortunately, my favorite song on the CD is their cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City".

Overall, the music is still somewhat reverent and merits 3 stars.
