Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What a Discovery!.......2000-04-09

I discovered this wonderful artist via this recoding which I heard in a Spanish restaurant in Brussels. I know very little about popular Hispanic music. And I don't speak any Spanish. Maria Dolores Pradera would appear to be a mature artist in her 60s. She has a deep pop contralto voice and the she completely grabbed me singing a compelling song called "Hijo de la Luna." Apparently Montserrat Caballe, the superb Catalan soprano, recorded this song and had something of a hit with it. It's a haunting ballad filled with melismatic flourishes which Senora Pradera sings with understated emotion and considerable depth. The minute I came home from vacation, I ordered the CD on Amazon.com and it's been on constantly since it arrived.

There is a considerable variety of styles here--all of it fascinating, and very memorable. There's a splendid duet--"No se por que te quiero," with with a pop baritone named Victor Manuel San Jose. Other favorites include "El Talisman," the catchy first tune on the CD.

Maria Dolores Pradera is a very subtle, quiet singer with a fine sense of rhythm and elegant, crisp diction. More North Americans should know of her work. I'd love to know more about her. If you love sophisticated singing, memorable tunes, and Latin music sung by a subtle and arresting artist, look no further.
