3 out of 5 stars An Acquired Taste.......2006-03-05

A CLIFFORD HODGE REVIEW
Tim Buckley was an enormous talent, and it was inevitable that he would engage in bold experimentation after brilliant folk/pop work like GOODBYE AND HELLO. He had more art than he could contain, and it forces its way out in LORCA, a jazz-influenced album which sounds like an artist giving birth to his transcendental masterpiece without anesthesia. It defies categorization, but it may be said that if you like John Martyn's SOLID AIR, and INSIDE OUT, and Roy Harper's STORMCOCK, and you find yourself wanting to add those albums and square the sum, you might like LORCA. Try to imagine scat singing by the sleep-deprived, and you might get some idea of the moody, floating singing style Buckley uses. Some will find it to be brilliant, others dull, when pursued over the course of an entire LP. This is not what you call "accessible". In the case of an album like this, one can neither advise someone not to get it nor eagerly endorse it. If you are curious, which you probably are, you will have to check it out for yourself. It is a progressive, experimental, very complex personal album, and beyond that, too hard to describe - but in a good way.

5 out of 5 stars Named after the mysterious LORCA.......2006-02-05

It's been so often stated, what LORCA is named after, I would only be restating the obvious, to bore you with going back into that whole story. Instead, the real story, is the music. Of all the Tim Buckley music i know, this is my favorite album. Like all the really great masterpieces of art, you don't "understand" the peice, you just experience it, live it, enjoy it. When i play this, I don't hear heroin visions, jazz singing, or abstract melodies that no one today would ever DREAM of singing. Perhaps unusual music is best approached, as one reviewer does, thru analysing the modality, chordal changes, melodic shapes, and so on. For me, that approach would be just like disecting a rose to understand why it's beautiful. This is music that is made from dreams and visions, not theories and analysis. A sociological view of the music, would catagorize it as an expression of the Los Angeles hippie era. But it's not hippy music. It has jazz like structure, but I can't say it's jazz. The lyrics might have some zen/beatnik, free verse properties, but that doesnt define what is happening with these songs. It inhabits its own world, speaks its own language, and leads you thru its own landscapes. When that kind of music appears, you just enjoy it. And there is so much here to enjoy, to remove you from this world, and take you to another world more peaceful, more mysterious, and more adventurous, than the one you probibly inhabit now. Does it really matter if he sang it or wrote it on opiods, and psychedelics? Does it really matter, that the recording technology might be limited, in providing technologically perfect sound out of your speakers? THE MUSIC IS THE THING. LORCA is the name of a planet, and the language, which the people on that planet speak. Except it isnt spoken, its sung. Its a planet of peace, of love, and of dreams. So, go ahead, lay out the money for this trip to LORCA. Now, if we could only sail there thru the stars, with the STARSAILOR supreme on a BLUE AFTERNOON, we'd have the complete trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Not as difficult as reviews would have you believe........2003-12-09

This album, while a departure from Happy/Sad and Goodbye And Hello, isn't as difficult as some people would have you believe (from reading 30-year-old reviews by people who just didn't get it and believing that those reviews are gospel without actually bothering to listen to the songs and figure them out first).

For instance -- the first two songs (the first side on the original vinyl) are *not* free-form. "Lorca" has verses, and is based on a descending pattern in 5/4 where the minor key and the locrian mode on the same root are played off of each other throughout the first eight minutes of the song, in a droning mode. Nifty pun there -- "Lorca" with the locrian mode. It's not hard to follow once you figure out where the actual verses are, and once you do, it seems a lot shorter than it is.

"Anonymous Proposition" actually has a proper chord progression, but it sounds like the gestures moving from chord to chord are scripted (much like so called "freedom jazz" or "fire music"), so that the chord changes are implied. The scripted gestures happen in the voice as well. It's not hard to hear it, and once you figure it out, you will find that this song actually has verses too.

The final three songs *do* continue in the "Happy/Sad" mode, with strummed chords, verses and choruses and hooks, so if you like that stuff, especially the wilder stuff like "Gypsy Woman" this might be up your alley.

All in all -- don't believe the morgue files that tell you this album is "weird", "difficult", etc. Remember that the people who originally wrote those reviews didn't know how to comprehend the musical language that Buckley was speaking on the first side, what with "Lorca"'s polytonality and "Anonymous Proposition"'s gesture based structure. In fact this record would be a fine way to demonstrate how "fire music" or "freedom jazz" works and open up an entire new musical world for you ... and any record that has that sort of power is worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing . . ........2003-05-27

An example of full-blown heroin excess or not, this album is a stunning achievement. Often regarded as a "tough listen", I was pleasantly surprised to find that the songs flow nicely and are easy to grasp, even though they average about 8 minutes each and for the most part have no readily discernible structure or choruses.

This is exactly the sort of album that requires the listener to lie down and get comfortable and really dedicate him- or herself to the record - it would make kind for odd background music and definitely isn't a record to be heard with a crowd. ... Happily, this record succeeds in a more immediate fashion .... Listening to it under appropriate conditions, you'll either like it right away or you never will - but if you like it you'll gain an even deeper appreciation on subsequent listens.

"Lorca", the title track, is a spooky sounding evocation of a muse, while "Anonymous Proposition" is sort of a lengthy blues number with no actual (musical) blues elements. "I Had A Talk With My Woman" is the stunner (for me) - it starts off very much in the Fred Neil style of establishing a basic groove and melody before meandering to the extent that it perpetually feels like the whole thing will collapse - without ever doing so. "Driftin'" is another hazy and romantic number, and while "Nobody Walkin'" breaks the mold by being a little bit more dissonant than the rest, it functions ....

I'm too young to remember any aspect of the 60s realistically, but this definitely has kind of an early morning on the beach 1970post-LSD trip vibe to it - the music is minimalistic enough that it could be replicated convinvingly with just a guitar and vocals, though there's sporadic bass, congas, organ and piano. There's certainly no doubt that this is a relic of the post-Manson murders, the-dream-has-faded era . . . it definitely lets you know the party was over by this point.

If you like the early, folkier Tim Buckley, this may be a bit harder to take. But I'd rate it as one of his better albums, challenging though it may be. ...

5 out of 5 stars For more open-minded listeners only..........2000-06-19

IT's one of the most adventurous record of Buckley's. IF you look for "Tim Buckley" or "Happy/sad"'s romantic tinge you may be disappointed, but don't worry, you will soon find that it's replaced by the innovative, atonal yet impressive, stark yet brillant music. Best Cut: Driftin' and Anonymous Proposition. The lyric include romanticized sex, but unlike "greetings from LA", it's not as explicit, and are treated with beautiness. Also, Underwood's guitar, excellent. One week moment is the last track "nobody walkin", it seems to be suggesting his latter soul adventure (which for many is quite disappointing one)... but overall speaking you should try it, unless you are used to those rubbish pop nowadays. Still, it's a shame that starsailor, reportedly his best, is out of print! Also blue afternoon...

Tellingly, classical albums whose liner notes are translated into Spanish--in addition to the traditional English, French, and German--tend to be those that contain music by Spanish-speaking composers and ensembles. This distinction goes to the heart of the "discovery" of the music of composer Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940) during the mid-to-late 1990s, evidenced by a steady series of releases after decades of near silence. And silence does not suit Revueltas, who favored enthralling, brash, maximalist symphonic expression, and whose work will not sound entirely new to new audiences, even though his clout as a major cultural figure stops at the border of his native country, Mexico.

This sort of déjà entendu familiarity is generally the case with any composer who absorbs "folk" material (think Béla Bartók or, especially, Aaron Copland). To hear regional military horns bellow through Revueltas's large-scale Ventanas for Large Orchestra is to have dozens of western films flash through the mind's eye. And to hear subtle mariachi motifs inform the arrangement of the same composition, or in the countless set-piece segments of the highly varied Ocho por Radio, is to hear a thorough imagination at play. Revueltas understood foremost that simple themes magnified to an orchestral scale require additional detail to fill the space, and he achieves his goal with richly embroidered counterpoint, overlays of dissociated themes, and strong writing for single instruments, as with the woodwind patter in First Little Serious Piece. That said, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen's renderings seem a bit removed from Revueltas; he can unnecessarily reinforce the film-music-like quality of some of the material. This is lively, at times volatile, and often humorous music, and should be played as such. --Marc Weidenbaum

5 out of 5 stars TRUST ME!!!.......2006-02-10

So yeah, Revueltas is not one of those big name 20th century composers like Stravinsky or Copland - especially when he's from Mexico - but you got to give him a chance. When I listened to his music, I was immersed with such sensation.

His music is one of a kind, with distinctive rhythm, exoticism, and Latin-American feel. His orchestration is one of the most colorful and fascinating things I have ever heard - things you may never get in traditional or even 20th century European Classical music. This is especially apparent in his two masterpieces: "Sensamaya" and "Night of the Mayas".

Unless you're some stubborn ultra-conservative person who enjoys Mozart more than Beethoven, and utterly denouce 20th century music, you definitely got to buy this album - a whole new world of Classical Music awaits! TRUST ME!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Modern Mexican Music.......2006-01-28

The Mexican expressionist composer Silvestre Revueltas, now well known for his incessant rhythms, wanted to change the state of authentic, Mexican-based classical music, from nationalistic folk-based sounds, to his more urgent and dissonant style of expressionism.

Revueltas' most famous work, Sensamaya, based on the poem Song to kill a snake, is evocative of his style. Constant rhythms, with authentic Hispanic percussion, and modern orchestrations, gritty melodies and harmonies, create an almost industrial sound. On this recording is the 1938 fully orchestrated version of near bombasticity. Two other works on this disk are also written for full orchestra: La Noche de los Mayas and Ventanas. La Noche de los Mayas is intended to evoke ancient Mexican tribal feelings from the Mayan culture. Almost in symphonic form, the four movements follow a classical structure, moderate first movement, scherzo, lyrical third movement, and a theme and variations for the final movement. The incredibly serene and melodic opening, with occasional majestic outbursts of brass and percussion, shows Revueltas' innate ability to combine Mexican culture with classical music. The scherzo second movement, subtitled Jaranas, is almost a classical Mariachi, with witty lightness; whereas the third movement, subtitled Yucatan, has a melancholy calm featuring lush strings, woodwind melodies, and folk-like elements. Extra-musical effects, extensive percussion, and variation technique, show Reveultas' capabilities of diverse compositional techniques as a 20th century modern composer. Interesting sounds and combinations make a very engaging conclusion. Much like Sensamaya, Ventanas is very rhythmical and industrious sounding, featuring in this case, the brass section and tuba solo. Angular melodies, sometimes folk sounding, other times classically based, and clashes of dissonance, along with perpetual motion (even during the subdued middle section), is evocative of expressionism and the influence of Stravinsky.

Three chamber works are also included on this CD: Ocho for Radio, Homage to Frederico Garcia Lorca, and Revueltas' set of two Little Serious Pieces. Each has a unique assortment of instruments and are in smaller proportions to the previously mentioned portions of the disk. Ocho for Radio is a musical answer to a mathematical equation. Featuring eight players, the music has so much going on, it nearly sounds Ivesian. The main idea prevails, however, including a mariachi trumpet and string section, along with two woodwinds and one percussionist. The Homage to Lorca, in three movements (Dance, Sorrow, and Sound) begins with familiar sounding Mexican ideas, with slightly humorous dissonances and motives, includes piano, piccolo, and tuba. The ambiguous sounds of the middle, give an uneasy feeling of impatient monotony, while the concluding movement is in a revelatory and joyous mood with occasional clashings of dissonance and jazzy inflections. The two Serious Little Pieces are charming miniatures: the first, a swift pointilistic whirlwind, the second, a slow waltz. Scored for wind quintet with baritone saxophone, a rustic sound is created.

I personally like to explore new music, and this all Revueltas CD seemed appropriate. The music is diverse, featuring classicism, Mexican folk attributes, expressionism, and tribal rhythms and modes, not to mention the diverse literary sources and instrumentations. The music is modern sounding with particular influences of Stravinsky, dissonance and polytonality are often used. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Los Angeles New Music Group under Esa-Pekka Salonen play admirably on some rhythmically virtuosic music. Salonen elicits very different sounds from work to work, making the CD varied. After listening, I am personally not astounded by the compositions, nor put off, but satisfactorily interesting. Make sure you like the music before purchasing. In any case, if you are looking for different and new music, this is a quality CD with a good performance, although, you may want to compare other compilations under conductor Eduardo Mata.

5 out of 5 stars Silvestre Revueltas: A Too Short Life but a Rich Musical Legacy.......2005-10-19

MUSIC OF SILVESTRE REVUELTAS is one of those CDs that, once in the library, is a disc that enjoys frequent hearings. This is music of deep convictions by a composer who seemed on the brink of entering the highest echelon of 20th Century composers when he died from alcoholism in 1940 (at age 41!). He brought the sounds, pulsations, exotic rhythms, and folk music from Mexico to the classical concert stage in a way that is as important as what Stravinsky did for the Russian idiom, Copeland did for the American idiom, and Bartok is for the Hungarian idiom.

This superb CD includes a fine overview of Revueltas' output. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the L.A. Philharmonic's New Music Ensemble in both large and small works. The 'La Noche de los Mayas, suite for orchestra' is as lush and gorgeous a work for orchestra as anything he wrote. But it is in 'Homenaje a Federico García Lorca for Chamber Orchestra' that the complexity and the drama of Revueltas' compositional powers are clearly evident. Also included are the now standard 'Sensemayá', 'Ocho por Radio', 'Ventanas' and two 'Little Serious Pieces'.

The performances are clear, transparent, full of bite and energy and very much in line with the quality of sound and interpretation we've come to expect form Salonen and his forces. In Salonen, Revueltas has found a solid supporter and we can only hope there will be many more recordings of this sensual and exciting music! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for Revueltas and Salonen!.......1999-08-30

Silvestre Revueltas was an enfant terrible of 20th century music in Mexico (compare his compositions to those of the more conservative Carlos Chavez). His works are highly appealing to the contemporary ear by virtue of their intense rhythmicity, creative orchestration and dark undertones which are often counterbalanced by brilliant Mexican motifs. After listening to this enlightening selection of some Revueltas' finest works for full orchestra and chamber ensemble, I wondered what other masterworks might have been composed by one who died too young. Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic musicians really do justice to these innovative pieces. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Cool!.......1999-05-10

What fun music! Salonen's other discs are great, but this is like a breath of fresh air. Revueltas's music is highly entertaining and pleasant to listen to. The LAPO plays fantastically and the recording quality is excellent. Go ahead and buy this one, it won't disappoint!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars Spirited playing of fine compositions.......2007-07-07

This Revueltas anthology is very well played by first class orchestras. The selections by Mata and de la Fuente are particularly played with spirit and verve.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Compositions Brilliantly Performed.......2007-05-03

If you enjoy Bartok & Stravinsky, you will adore Revueltas. Among the 15 works are two versions of sensemaya plus Cuauhnahuac and La Noche de los Mayas, all richly evocative of the ancient Mayan culture which underlies that of Mexico - bold tributes to proud traditions not unlike the musical paintings of the Caucasus peoples rendered by Khachaturian. The music of Revueltas deserves much wider performance in the world, but probably will not be often heard due to its technical complexity and the need for specialized native instruments for some of the passages. At least Leopold Stokowski recognized the brilliance of this spectacular work.

5 out of 5 stars Stokowski's Sensemaya.......2005-10-10

Great, great release. One of the reviews here (by "127") said that the Stokowski version of Sensemaya was interesting "historically but not musically" and I just wanted to strongly disagree with that. Leopold Stokowski has the orchestra playing in a different time-signature than the composer wrote! The piece is written mostly in 7 but this performance seems to have put the whole thing into 4 (it's probably more complicated than that but you get the idea) and the resulting performance is even more hectic and bombastic than the other recorded version of Sensemaya on the same CD. I don't know why Stokowski did this, but this performance is the most unique I've heard (of the piece.) Whether or not this is a "good" thing I don't want to get into but the recording is definitely very interesting and worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Revueltas Works.......2003-04-09

Unlike many people I think, I've been a fan of Revueltas since I was quite young...I first heard Sensemaya at the age of 12 and was blown away. Unfortunately, for years most of his music was rather hard to find...darn near impossible actually. However, the composer has recently picked up a number of higher profile champions (including Esa Pekka Salonen) and a spate of rereleases during his Centennial a few years ago. Such a rediscover is long overdue!

This current CD is part of the Centennial celebration of Revueltas. It consists of a compilation of orchestral recordings by Eduardo Mata, chamber recordings by David Aetherton and the Jalapa Orquestra Sinfonica under Herrara de la Fuente. The results are quite stunning, with enough material to keep you listening for quite some time!

The first CD contains exclusively orchestral music under the baton of Maestro Mata. This is prime stuff indeed. The CD begins with Revueltas' most renowned piece, Sensemaya, a dense, barbaric orchestral fantasy inspired by a Cuban poem that details a traditional snake-killing ceremony in the Santeria religion. The piece is dominated by short pithy melodic statements which are gradually layered over each other to create greater and greater tension. The result is deeply compelling, Stravinsky's Rite is combined with Varese's Arcana...with native Mexican rhythms and instruments thrown in.

The other works on the album are also extremely compelling. They can be broken down into abstract orchestral works, chamber pieces and music for film. In addition, Revueltas shows two definate sides, one is the convinced modernist, who shows a lot in common with Varese, and even Scriabin. The best work in this vein is the Danza geometrica (and it's chamber version Planos). The other big vein is the "nationalistic" vein, of which Revueltas was a greater exponent than his compatriot Chavez. Many works on this CD, Itinerios, Homage to Garcia Lorca, and others display a sense of wild abandon present in traditional fiestas. And yet, even here, Revueltas is a formalist and modernist, treating his material less as color and more as another structural element.

The other really wonderful work on this disc is La Noche de los Mayas. Culled from a film score, this is beautifully written film music and quite ahead of it's time. It's not hard to imagine these Revueltas strains as an inspiration to Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein and the like. The work is structured as a large symphony, dominated by a broad, tonal but dissonant theme in the brass. There is a wealth of detail in this work that I come back to over and over.

Much of this material has very little competition. The chamber works have been basically neglected on CD and many of the orchestral works are only available on this disc. Sensemaya has significant competition however. Salonen has done a really wonderful disc of this material, which also includes a great reading of Noche. Bernstein has perhaps the best reading of Sensemaya available on his Latin American Fiesta album (which also includes a wonderful rendition of Chavez' Sinfonia India)But Mata's reading is nearly as good as Bernstein and just as good as Salonen. Overall, for breadth and depth of music covered, this is a superlative disc and the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Abstract but deep........2003-02-05

I've got this cd when I first heard of this composer. He is the biggest composer that Mexico has had to offer to the classical music scene. Mexico has a variety of notable composers such as Chavez but none of them match Revueltas impact on the scene.

This cd pretty much has all of Revueltas' major works including his most known one: Sensemaya. That piece has been conducted by Bernstein and Stowkowski with the latter being on this disc. There is two performances of Sensemaya which includes the one mentioned above and a new version.

The best piece I believe is Janitzio. If you are Mexican you will be reminded of Mexican big bands because Revueltas incorporated the sound into this piece as well as imitations of a Mariachi band. It is a very abstract piece but very remenicent of Mexico. Excellent cd as a whole.
The cd includes a booklet with information on Revueltas and the pieces on this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Not flamenco, but good -- or vice versa.......2007-05-05

This recording dates from 1965, when Paco de Lucía was 16. It is not Flamenco; rather, it is arrangements of Andalusian folk tunes, which is not the same thing.

Lucía at that point had been recognised as a child prodigy (which is why he had a recording contract), but he was not yet what he was to become later; this was eight years before the hit "Entre Dos Aguas" whose massive success was the pivotal point in his career.

So what he recorded then was dictated by the record company, with the predictable results: albums ranging from tedious pot-boilers to minor masterpieces. Several of them consisted of duets with the guitarist Ricardo Modrego -- which is probably the latter's major claim to fame as far as the world outside Spain is concerned. The best of the bunch of Paco's early recordings for my money is "Canciones Andaluzas para dos guitarras" with his brother Ramón de Algeciras, which did (I believe) appear briefly on CD and then sank without trace.

The present album is somewhere in the higher end of the spectrum; the tunes, rescued from obscurity in the 1930's by Spain's best-known poet, are familiar to every Andalusian, and close to the guitarists' native idiom.

Lorca was of course a pianist. The arrangements for two guitars are imaginative and good, aided by possibly the best stereo separation I've heard.

Perhaps surprisingly, and certainly unfortunately, however, on this album Modrego appears the better player. The reason is that Lucía plays a guitar with a rattle on the first string that varies from merely annoying in the lower reaches of the fingerboard to excruciating at the 15th fret (which is used more often than you might think, e.g. on El Vito).

Still, an interesting disc and well worth a listen. The playing time is just under 38 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Rare, early Paco de Lucia - a must have.......2000-03-23

I wonder why it takes record companies so long to issue CD editions of such rare gems as this. Paco masterfully plays Garcia Lorca's beautiful songs, achieving a very high peak in his career at a very early stage. Classical flamenco guitar as good as it gets.

I bought this after hearing the first track, an extremely catchy tune about some lenguas rotas in a Barnes and Noble Bookstore listening station. I immediatly came home and bought it. Apparently it was a caffine-inducued late night splurge, because besides the extremely promising first track, I then found little to keep me from using this CD as a coaster.

(but I haven't... so anybody interested in buying this used?)

5 out of 5 stars Cibola!.......2003-03-19

A relatively unknown release from a relatively unknown singer, especially in the US. This is a fantastic blend of modern rock, pop, and a ballad or 2. The songs are up-beat, catchy, and probably would work well as a cross-over album if he ever decided to record any in English or Spanglish. A great debut album - I'm looking forward to a follow-up effort as well! "Besame en la boca" is very catchy - I find myself singing it at work all the time! "Monedas al rio" is another favorite of mine - very good electric guitar in this song. The whole album is well worth the few dollars spent!

I had the opportunity to see him live in South Beach as a promotion on his album...Once again, he surprised me. Very, very good. Really enjoy his energetic songs with great meaning and wording.

I am guessing he is Spanish, but if you can prove me wrong, go for it!
The songs are fun, interesting and just really catchy to listen to.
There is a mix of songs on this cd, the variety is nice.
"dejame la lengua rota..es mi pasatiempo"-just one lyric from the first song- interesting huh?

Listening to this record is an unforgetable experience to anybody who likes García Lorca's poetry. For the first time, the music matches his great artistic heights, thanks to the music of many of Spain's foremost popular musicians: Serrat, Victor Manuel and Kiko Veneno are just a few of them. The work of Michel Camilo as arranger deserves the highest and wildest praise, what a master he is, and what a job he's done here!!

This is a masterful record, certainly one of the best in popular music in many years. Highly and warmly recomended.

4 out of 5 stars Reconsidering Nono.......2002-07-30

I have of course known of Luigi Nono for most of my life. His music was discussed in every book on twentieth century music to be written since the 60's. And yet I'm ashamed to say that I had never heard anything by Nono until I bought this CD recently. I didn't know what I'd been missing. Nono is far from a dessicated total serialist. Rather his music is passionate and revolutionary. And perhaps even a bit spiritual...though probably it's a Marxist spirituality.

como una ola de fuerza y luz is the monumental work on this disc. Scored for orchestra, tape and soprano soloist, the work is a sonic tour de force. It was written to morn the death of Luciano Cruz, a Chilean revolutionary whom Nono had befriended. The sonic world of the piece is based on recurrent low clusters in the orchestra, and a musique concrete tape based on distorted piano and human voices. The work is tragic and haunting.

The other works on this CD are from the 1950's, when Nono was first making his reputation. They are settings of Neruda and Lorca and meant as an epitaph to Lorca, murdered by Franco's followers during the Spainish Civil War. The works are uncompromising, and yet there is a profound lyricism in the music. This becomes most evident at the end of the Third Epitaffio as the music becomes a straightforward tonal version of a Spanish Civil War anthemn. The effect is very moving.

Performances are exemplary on this CD. Ursula Reinhardt-Kiss sings the monumentally difficult lines of como with real precision. And Roswitha Trexler and Werner Haseleu do a wonderful job on the equally difficult lines of the Epitaffio.

This CD has whetted my appetite for more music of this wonderful composer. He is vastly underrated.

5 out of 5 stars like a wave of strength and light!.......2001-07-12

"como una ola de fuerza y luz" was written in 1971/1972 to commemorate the Chilean revolutionary, Luciano Cruz, of the MIR (Revolutionary Leftist Movement). This 30-minute piece, recorded in 1976 in Leipzig, is for soprano, piano and orchestra, accompanied by a tape recording of transformed piano sounds and human voices. The electronics are therefore simple, but powerfully effective, used at the end to evoke the continuing presence of the revolutionary spirit, and the utopian prospect. As noted, "como una ola" marked a transition toward Nono's more contemplative late (1980s) style. The two shorter works included here (written in 1952/3, recorded in 1977) are less innovative musically, but form a thematic whole, as they commemorate the (losing) democratic forces of the Spanish Civil War (set to verse from Garcia-Lorca and Neruda). From the dictators Franco and Pinochet, to such current anti-democratic forces as the World Trade Organization, the struggle continues...

4 out of 5 stars Disc shows transition between Nono's early and late styles........1998-12-22

Memento (Epitafio No.3) is a good example of Nono's early style, based on Schoenberg's Variations for Orchestra, with shouting chorus and a political text. Como una etc., composed in 1972, is rooted in this kind of music but also shows the transition into late Nono, full of erie, static sound, a sort of white on white effect. Dedicated to Luciano Cruz, a Chilean revolutionary and martyr, the work's title means "Like a wave of strength and light." Nono's musical interpretation of strength here consists in rumbling percussion and a piano smoldering away in its lower registers, while light becomes the electronically produced "space music" which the more violent music periodically gives way to, as if to a vision of another, more spiritual realm. Como una ola de fuerza y luz is certainly one of Nono's most powerful works, and may be one of the masterpieces of the century.

5 out of 5 stars Great music by a throughly neglected composer.......1998-12-21

Frank Zappa once said that one of his band members wanted to turn your teen aged ears around. He must have had music like this in mind. Luigi Nono's music thoroughly engages the ear and mind in ways that the rock modernist could only hope for. His setting of texts by Lorca and Neruda are stunning and the performances on this disc are a revelation. Even in the short and simple third movement of the Epitafio #1 the poem and its setting create an entire world that would take Borges fifteen pages to suggest.
