Reminiscent of the voice of the early albums of the Sundays, the singer in Frente must positively bounce when she sings. Lovely fun music that never becomes whinny or down.

Not as I remembered..........2007-05-14

I loved this album when it first came out, and after many years without it, I ordered the CD. It's not quite as good as I remembered it (the songs are very mellow, and more "folksy" that I remembered), but there are a couple of songs I still enjoy, and, well, it just brings back nice memories of college!

I Never Thought Life Could Be So Sweet!.......2007-02-20

From the beautiful opener to the excellent cover of Bizarre Love Triangle at the end this is a wonderful album full of mellow catchy songs. I think of it as an album to listen to late at night because of the enchanting quality and Angie Hart's vocals but it has some upbeat songs and makes for great listening anytime. The only misstep on the album is when the guys sing parts on a couple of songs. They are not bad singers but Angie's vocals are so joyful to hear that you wish they weren't cutting in. Those aren't bad songs though, in fact there isn't a bad song on this album, and some are absolutely stunning. No doubt to me this was one of the best albums of the nineties. I've been lucky to have these songs bouncing around in my head for over a decade now, my life has definitely been sweeter as a result. If you haven't been so lucky I suggest you start making up for lost time.

Great Album and Great Buy.......2007-01-21

I first heard this album when it was released in 1992. My friends and I enjoyed singing every single song with and without the album playing in the background. I purchased this album for nostalgic purposes, yes, but also to hear the lovely voice of Angie Hart, the upbeat melodies and the variations in songs making this early album an excellent buy.

Still love it!.......2006-12-09

I bought this album in 1994 and is just amazing how I can still enjoy these songs after all these years. Their other album, 'Shape' is just as great too I was surprised at that. All these songs are on my ipod now and ofcourse I don't listen to them all the time but when traffic gets jammed here in Los Angeles which is everyday, sometimes I put their music and is like being on a cruise instead of being stuck on the 101. I don't even want to arrive home at times just so I could listen to more songs :P

This music is really incredible. The lead singer will remind you a lot of the soft-spoken Jewel but there is something so compelling about her style and accent that it really keeps you coming back for more. Really, believe me, try this album.

Frente, just great........1999-08-07

I first heard and liked Frente when radio JJJ began playing "Labour Of Love" in 1991. A friend of mine was friends with guitarist Simon Austin and asked me to come and see Frente play at The Sando in Newtown, Sydney - very low key, only about 20 or 30 people in the place, no stage, the band just set up next to the bar on the pub's carpeted floor, but we were treated to such delightful musicianship which I'd never before heard or seen. I mean, these guys played the recorder?!? I was instantly a convert to Angie Hart's little girl-ish reflections and Austin's plucky acoustic guitar, and so I bought Frente's then little-known "Whirled" EP. The rest is "history" as they say, they went from those humble beginnings to become huge. The release on sale here, the "Labour Of Love EP", is a hotch-potch collection of some tracks taken from their various Australian-release EPs. Sources are the original "Whirled" EP of 1991 [Labour of Love, Testimony, Risk, Oh Brilliance], combined with later inclusions from the "Clunk" EP of 1992 [Paper Bullets & Walls] and the "Lonely" EP of 1994 [Bizarre Love Triangle, Not Given Lightly]. The spatial beauty of Frente's music is gratifyingly collected in this mini-compilation. Any Frente fan will love it. Those new to Frente could start here.

CONTINUING THE DEFINITIVE LECUONA SERIES.......2004-09-14

In Each volume, Tirino's playing is Herculean. He understands all the forms-and then plays them flawlessly with total feel, command, poise, and technical panache this music requires. The rumba will have you begging for more! I don't think anyone could ever surpass the perfection Tirino brings to his Lecuona disks. Gold standard.

I love this disc. Tirino is extraordinary from the first note to the last. How dare anyone call this great artist any other name but MAESTRO. This is a must have for any music lover. In fact, this is my favorite disk out of the whole Lecuona series on BIS. Get it, or you'll be waiting till the end of time for a better recording by any artist on these works, or on any Lecuona for that matter. 5 stars plus 100!

INCREDIBLE MUSIC AND PLAYING.......2001-05-04

This disc is fabulous from begining to end. Tirino is phenomenal-don't even DARE to think otherwise! This music swings and is beautiful from top to bottom. I'm going to buy all the discs in this series-if they are as good as this one, boy-I'm in for a treat. Highly recommended.

What more can be said of Tirino and his recordings of Lecuona's music except TOTAL, ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. This disc stands out for several reasons: The spirited Rumba with voices and chorus, and the Danzas Cubanas which are real gems. (as well as Vals Gitano). These danzas require EXTREME Left hand control of technique along with many colors and swing. I as a Cuban know this very well. I have never heard these pieces played better. Tirino's HUGE technique, beautiful sound, varied phrasing, and delicate subtelties never fail to amaze the listener-its incredible. Forget any negative comments-they are silly, stupid and uniformed. A better pianist, and better playing of this music you will never, EVER hear. If you want the best recordings of Lecuona's music, Tirino's series on the BIS label is IT. Get Lecuona's own recordings as well, as a point of reference. ENJOY!

PERFECTION: PIANO PLAYING DOESEN"T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.......2001-04-24

I own the entire Tirino/Lecuona series on the BIS label and I am a teacher at a major musical institution. I have heard a lot of piano playing in my life, including much Latin American piano music, which I have a special affinity for. Simply stated: Tirino plays this music like a God. Pianism of this high a calibre dosen't get any better. Period. Of all the discs in this series, this one is my favorite,(along with Volume 3). The rumba sizzles, and Tirino infuses it with breadth, stylistic colors and rhythm with real panache. And he wrote the Spanish lyric himself! Amazing. Tirino's technical skills are monumental, BIG, Lisztian in ability, certainly far above "Clementi" or "Scarlatti", good heavens. His playing is perfect for Lecuona-in fact-for ANYTHING. Beyond staggering technique he has a singing quality and subtelty of nuance and phrasing rarely heard nowadays-flexibility of sound with thousands of variations in phrasing, tone, dynamic, and pedal subtelties that make his musicianship stand FAR above many others. His tone is rich, full, NEVER BANGING (enough already, please!), aristocratic-never vulgar. Anyone who really knows good piano playing will hear it. Tirino's playing is very warm. The Danzas Cubanas (especially Lola esta de Fiesta) are magical. Put on Lecuona's recordings and compare them side by side to Tirino's. AMAZINGLY IDENTICAL! Fact: Tirino has been recognized as the Lecuona authority in the world for a reason-TIME magazine, The New York Times, and Stereo Review can't be wrong. Neither is the Lecuona family, who have endorsed his recordings, interpretations and work. There might not even be a discussion about Lecuona these days, had it not been for the work of Tirino.

In summary-Tirino is a GREAT artist and one would be hard pressed to imagine anyone else coming along and improving on his recordings. Comments made to the contrary can be dismissed as silly, uninformed vulgarity. If you want to hear great Lecuona, and great Piano playing by a tremendous artist, this disc and others in this series are for you. If not, it might be advisable to learn music, and re-wire your brain to try and listen differently.

Some hits for the future.......2002-06-17

I share with most of the other reviewers the feeling that "Shape" is a great album. "Goodbye goodguy" and "Sit on my hands" are great songs. However, I would like to stress that "Shape" includes some pure pop gems (read "pop" as a praise, not as a criticism), that some future movie or radio show will be able to transform into #1 hits. Before this happens, listen to "Burning girl", "The destroyer", "So mad" and above them all, to "Jungle". Perhaps you are the future director of the moviethat will lead this underrated album to its deserved place!

Trying too hard..........2001-09-25

...It seems as if Frente! thought that they may not have been taken seriously enough after their charming but breezy Marvin the Album, so they needed to make a point here.

The seemingly obvious result of this need to be serious is the dirge-like opening cut, "Sit on my Hands." "Sit on my Hands" is a dark and plodding tome that robs the listener of any of the cheery expecations they might have had going in.

The album brightens up considerably later, but never hits the same easy stride that Marvin did.

Perhaps this is a classic sophomore slump, but it is also possible that Marvin was just a lucky of convergence of wit and whimsy that is unlikely to be repeated.

"Marvin" was a great album, but so is "Shape." Angie gets more involved with the song-writing process, and I think it shows (in a very good way). The sound is still all Frente, but it's a slightly different treat.

Conocí a Edith, a través de una amiga, que ya la conocía desde Timbiriche. Apenas escuché el album, me encantó. Su voz es espectacular y las letras de las canciones, Uyy! ¡¡Para qué decir algo! Vino a Argentina, un par de veces, aunque, lamentablemente todavía no es conocida aquí. El domingo pasado la escuché, en el Canal de las Estrellas (México) y ahí me enteré de la existencia de su nueva album, el que no dudé salir a conseguir por alguna disquería o, a través de Internet.

not what one would expect..........2000-02-23

if you are like me and were a huge fan of Edith when she was in Timbiriche, this album was a total departure from what we have heard up until now. My all time fave Edith Timbiriche track was "Yo No Soy Una Más". I was totally expecting something alot more pop/rock oriented. This album when I first heard it reminded me of something along the lines of Rocio Durcal. Don't get me wrong, but I was expecting something a little bit more 'younger' sounding. The end result is a very romantic, and lush album. Very 'balada' and even leaning towards a more regional mexican sound on certain tracks. Edith's voice is beautiful and quite impressive. All I can say is that it is about time she finally went at it on her own.

Edith Marquez has an astonishing beautful voice. Since she was in the group "Timbiriche", I knew she was going to be a great singer! She has a beautiful voice and a beautiful way of expressing her songs. She is one of a few "GOOD", young singers! I would recommend it to anyone! GUARANTEED!!!!!!!!!
