As former lead vocalist for A.B. Quintanilla y Los Kumbia Kings, DJ Kane offered up smooth vocals on top of Tejano, cumbia, and R&B rhythms. Kane plays up the pop and R&B elements on his self-titled debut album, but he still can't escape the Kings' sound. The Houston-born, Brooklyn-bred performer kicks off his album with "La Negra Tomasa," and his zippy cumbia take on the Cuban classic (which was also one of Los Caifanes' earliest hits) would sound right at home on any of the Kings' past efforts. Kane also peppers his album with tender R&B ballads, another of the Kumbia Kings' calling cards. The best of the bunch is "Mia," co-written by Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough. To maximize crossover appeal, the song is featured in English, Spanish, and cumbia versions, a trick often used by--you guessed it--the Kumbia Kings. Kane is a confident, charismatic singer, but it's a mystery why he chose to venture out on his own when his sound is still so clearly tied to his past musical life. --

BEYOND AMAZING!!!.......2006-05-25
I WHOLE HEARTEDLY AND FIRMLY BELIEVE THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST TRANCE ALBUM'S OF ALL TIME! IT HAS BEEN IN MY TOP 5 FAV'S SINCE 1999 AND I NEVER TIRE OF LISTENING TO IT! I WILL SAY THAT THE COMMUNICATIONS SONG IS NOT SO GREAT, AS YES, IT IS A LONG SONG OF TELEPHONE RINGING, BUT OTHER THAN THAT EVERY SINLE TRACK IS AMAZING. THE MOST AMAZING TRANCE TRACK EVER, FLOWER DUET REMIX 99 WILL MAKE THE HAIR ON THE BACK OF YOUR NECK STAND UP! ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING AND MOVING PEICES EVER EVER EVER!!! I HAVE PURCHASED THIS CD PROBABLY 10 TIMES AFTER HAVING IT STOLEN/LOST BECAUSE I SIMPLY CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IT! A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY TRANCE LOVER!
Don't Pay attention to what others say... THIS ALBUM IS EXCELLENT........2005-08-27
A bit of Everything. This album is great. If you like trance this is it... Starting from the FIRST song to the end of the album..it creeps in and sucks you up into the rhythem and mood of this whole
*blissful* album...it just FLOWS... This is a must own... It's been a while since I had listened to this album since it was lost... thank God amazon had it..i been searching for it for a while now... I am going to buy it again without a doubt. Although this album does bring back a wave of memories one thing i can assure you..it's well worth it. It gets you into the feel of the EMOTION behind trance music.. songs like it's a beautiful day.. i love it when it feels this way..be prepared for a relaxing ESCAPE... Listen to it with an open mind.. it will relax you.. like i said in the begining, the very first song to the last...will be played in your ears and mind just like a beautiful story book with a perfect ending... go figure why the first song on this CD is called "Children." It is your responsibility to re access that inner child and come into contact with your innerself... this CD was like meditation to me...and I hope you get the chance to own a copy for this was the first CD album that had me and not only I loving trance music...
God bless.
An excellent pop trance album.......2005-07-30
I lost this album and had to go buy it again--its amazing. More of dance than trance, however. Completely classic line up: ATB, Ayla, Faithless and Robert Miles. The only tracks I wasn't personally thrilled with were "He's All I want" and "Flower Duet 99," but they aren't bad, depending on your taste. I'd recommend this album to fans of dance or trance but especially ATB as every song on here is catchy, melodic, and perfect for summer.
hmmm.........2005-05-27
i bought this one and i just don't love it.
the good tracks were:
children(robert miles)
it's a fine day(miss jane)
ayla part 2(ayla)
flower duet '99(jonathan peters)
rain(brainbug) [not the GREATEST, but it was good.]
the BAD tracks were:
insomnia(faithless) [AWFUL VOICE]
communication(mario piu) [NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR 7 MINUTES OF TELEPHONES RINGING.. I MEAN COMMON!!!]
beautiful day(hypertrophy) [MALE VOCALS GONE WRONG]
and all of the rest were kinda iffy. if you were in the mood, and too tired to change the song you'd just listen to them. otherwise you'd probably change it. and a few of them aren't EVEN trance.. thank god i bought Volume 2 first. because if i would've bought this one first.. i don't think i would've gone back to "BEST OF TRANCE." it's a shame.
It's okay..........2005-01-03
Okay, Now I need to change my review again... Originally, I was torn between giving this 2 stars or 3 stars, but oh well, I gave it 2. I did not like many tracks on this disc, however I really liked the songs Beautiful Day and Communication, and a few others are okay also. If you must have this, get it used. I also got Vol 2, it's way better than this. I don't really think this is worth the price.

Thank goodness it's on CD but what happened to the sound........2007-02-17
I have been waiting for Madleen Kane on CD for a long time, so have to say thank you for this release. However, it is less than ideal. As has been mentioned by other reviewers, the sound quality on some of the tracks is frankly shocking and spoils any enjoyment that is to be had. Also, what hasn't been commented on so far, is the fact that the tracks Forbidden love and Cheri were originally parts of a 'Suite' from the 'Cheri' album, and the decision to split them here and omit the other tracks (Fire in your heart and Secret love affair) is perverse to say the least - if it was a question of space, then removing the entirely pointless 'megamix' would have been an obvious start. Also missing from this release is Madleen's cover of 'Fever' which although showing up her vocal limitations does have one of the most beautiful orchestrations of the era.
Pass this CD on to the next generation. They should listen too !.........2005-10-21
At the age of 20, Madleen mostly mistaken as French but originally Swedish when modeling for Ford, was discovered by J.C. Freidrich owner of Boona Music productions and she became a hot singing commodity with Rough Diamond in 1978 which took off like fire not only in U.S. but across the globe. After she released Cheri in 1979, her singer career became firm. Another gold record followed with Forbidden love. She didn't want to become an object and loved music and singing so much that she even rejected to play with Jack Nicholson in Hollywood ! However Chercez Pas was an excellent club song but couldn't carry the rest of Sounds of Love album when released in 1980. Nevertheless Georgio Moroder appeared with his mixes in 1981 with "Don't wanna Lose You" and helped her album sales in Clubs but no longer in radios. Sadly, Madleen tired of the recordings faded away after the last album 1985 "Cover Girl"...This 12" compilation is a MUST buy for those who remember this beatiful lady and reminiscing late 70's and early 80's club sounds. I still have her in vinyl but I still had to buy this CD and it's already taken its place in my collection. She always makes me dance and after all, it's a pretty good recording too.
Euro Disco Queen........2004-03-25
I had first become aware of Madleen Kane in 1981 when she performed on Solid Gold doing "You Can". I had never seen her before and thought she was beautiful(I was 11 at the time) and was curious about her and the song. I bought the 45 and in the mid 90's finally found a 12" vinyl of the song. The remix on the 12" and the 1981 Billboard Top Dance Hits cd was around 5:35 and the version on this collection of hits is 6:56 with a different beginning and end parts. I love the new version. I also read a couple of books about the disco era and most were praising her music as smart and different than most disco. I think she is in the same boat as Grace Jones and Linda Clifford in that they did great work but it never really crossed over to the POP charts. The best songs are the NRG mid 80's "I'm No Angel" and "Ecsatsy" written by Ian Anthony Stephans(who did High Energy for Evelyn Thomas) and Paul Parker - a great dancer singer himself. I thought the disco records of "Rough Diamond" and "CherChez Pas " were incredible. But "Playing For Time" and of course "You Can" still shimmer after 20 some years. These were produced by Giorgio Moroder and show the influence of his work with Blondie on "Call Me"- producing a more rock/dance vibe on these classics. You can see that Madleen looks like a Bond girl- she was a supermodel in the 70's/80's but the music is what I bought this cd for and it doesn't disappoint at all. Great disco and nrg music.
Dance Music at it's Best.......2003-12-16
This is a fine cd of her singles from her various hard to find albums recorded between 1978-1985. I love all the songs especially "Rough Diamond", "You Can", "On Fire" and "I'm No Angel". Once you start playing this CD, you will exprience dancing bliss! Here are the tracklistings:
1. Rough Diamond 6:15
2. Cherchez Pas 5:49
3. On Fire 5:43
4. Ecstasy 5:58
5. I'm No Angel 6:39
6. Cheri 4:48
7. Playing for Time 7:20
8. You Can 6:56
9. Forbidden Love 5:02
10. You and I 4:12
11. Fire in My Heart 4:11
12. Megamix 7:04
underated.......2003-12-09
i purchased this disc recently and hasn't been out of my cd player. the best cuts are "rough diamond","forbidden love", "you can" and "fire in my heart" and are hard to find. three tracks are produced by giorgio morodor. the sound is a tad dubious (like from clean vinyl) on a few tracks. it was still worth the price for clean sounding 12"ers from this underated disco queen. buy it quick before it disappears.

Not only cumbia but great ballads.......2006-09-27
I was presently surprised by this CD. In addition to several jumping cumbia tracks, I was especially impressed by "Porque
esperaste," in Spanish and English, "Ayer," "Sin ti" and "Ultimo adios." The arrangements and mixes are very good and DJ Kane has a soulful falsetto.
This is not a pop album!!!!!.......2006-01-05
Dj Kane's sophmore album is a blend of cumbia rythyms and musica urbana. The 1st single(Porque esperaste) is a slow jam/Kumbia type song about playing with emotions and getting hurt by mixed emotions.other notable songs (Brinca) a fast pace get tha biale going jam.its a mostly kumbia album wit a bit of urbana.Celso pina makes a great appearence on(Mueve la cintura)a get off ur feet and move.em til u drop.over all its a great cd for mexican music lovers.

Saying the truth.......2005-01-17
I think that even if DJ Kane was a former KK member he still has his own style in music. It is not anything like KK but in a good way. DJ Kane is a great musician and needs a little credit in that. He has a great style in music very different from Mr. Quintanilla. Although i might add A.B is also a great artist.
Dj Kane tha great.......2004-10-11
Leaving the Kumbia kings might have been a good move after all. With this self-title debut album being a hit he shows he's good enuff for the solo world. With hits Like(La negra tomasa,Buena vida, pura mentiras And Mia Cumbia remix hes sur to get your attention
Great CD.......2004-07-19
This is a great cd, I like most of the songs on this album. The only draw back on the album is that one song is repreated twice, the other is repeated 3 times. Like La Negra Tomasa you only need one version of that song, and then Mia on is original the other is cumbia mix, and then again in english. I mean this song is good but not that good for me to hear it a million times. So in actuality, this cd only really contains 10 original songs, he could have at least made a few more. All in all though it is a great cd, and you will listen to it quite a few times. I do believe that K1 album is better though.
Amazing.......2004-07-12
in this new CD, former lead vocalist of AB Quintanilla Y Los Kumbia kings, DJ Kane offers us a nice Blend of Cumbia, Tejano, R&B rythems, and even some club mixes- Similar to what the Kumbia Kings used to do. Every song on this album is great. Although, I must say, my all time favorites on the Album are the tracks, No Me Dejes sin Tu Amor (Don't Leave Me Without your Love) and Mia (mine). You will find three versions of Mia on on the album, A Tejano version, a Cumbia and an English version entitled You Still Belong To Me. If you miss the way Kumbia Kings used to sound, then I Suggest you buy this and the K1 Album DJ Kane ROCKS THE HOUSE!!!!
Go DJ Kane.......2004-05-17
This CD is off the hook. All the songs are very good. To bad he is not a Kumbia King, I wish he was a Kumbia King again. But yeah this CD is better than the Kingz One Album.

To Have Vocals....Or Not To Have Vocals.......2004-02-20
Let me start off by saying, I'm a big fan of Nalin & Kane's orignal "Beachball" track. With that being said, I like this new mix of that classic beat, but nothing beats the original. I was disappointed that this CD didn't have more "club" or "extended" mixes on it. The one club mix that was included on the CD (Steve Murano Club Mix"), outshined the two radio edits. As stated in another review on this site, the club mix was more progressive and the effects to the vocals of Alex Prince were very well done (I'm a sucker for smooth vocals over a good club beat). I would of rated this product higher if it had more mixes. Happy Clubbin!
File under "unnecessary".......2003-11-20
Beachball was one of the biggest tunes of the late 90s and it was for a reason. It established Nalin & Kane as a dominant force in the progressive house/trance scene and was a big reason for much of the demand for their remixes in the late 90s (see Lustral - Everytime and Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar for solid proof of this). I would not debate the original (vocal and non-vocal) mixes are classics and take nothing away from the original work.
The problem with this is obviously the nasty new vocal slapped on top. I don't even know why this abomination was created - an obvious lack of ideas would be the first thing that comes to mind. Yes adding a wispy new vocal will make it more commercial, but to slap a cheesy vocal on an absolute classic six years after it was originally released (and has since had a great deal of success) is disrespectful to the orignal track.
If you're relatively new to dance music, I strongly suggest tracking down the original mixes on FFRR, Motor Music or Hooj. There's a reason people look at this tune with fond memories and since little was actually changed between the two tracks I'd go for the one that has more substance and will be regarded as a classic 5-10 years from now. This release is completely unnecessary. It just swaps one vocal for another one which is clearly inferior and leaves a sour taste in my mouth as a result. New Nalin & Kane material would be asking a lot, but it would definitely be more welcome than this.

Old Skool.......2006-05-13
For anyone who likes old skool Jungle/hardcore, this CD is for you. There are piano tunes, and complicated Jungle beats which was the sound in the early 90s. Do not bash it because it is not what you expected listening to the Happy2Bhardcore series. At one time this was considered hardcore. This is the sound that eventually split and became Jungle and Four Beat (aka HappyCore). I have some of these tracks on vinyl and they are deathly hard to mix, but sound so great. Get this CD if you like the Jungle/Hardcore movement of 1989-1995.
Marketed poorly.......2006-03-07
I too saw this advertised in the Happy 2B Hardcore pamphlets and expected a hardcore beat. Sadly it is quite old school, mid 90s. My expectations ruined what could have been a good CD, but don't purchase this expecting super heavy bass or anything close to hardcore. That said, I still mildly enjoy it.
this cd is crap.......2002-02-26
ok, for all you happy hardcore fans out there, DONT GET THIS CD!!!! you may notice in Anabolic Frolic's cds, you may notice it says " if you lke this, then try these" DONT GET ANY OF THESE 140 BPM+ CDS. none of these songs ever get up to the 140 bpm limit. but if you like jungle/london oldskool then check it out, but happy hardcore lovers, STAY AWAY
one of the best jungle cds ever made.......2000-03-06
check it out, all the oldskool london hardcore classics. bringing you back to the oldskool rave scene, forget the techstep, we want to bring you back to 93. this is the true jungle
From Darkcore to Jungle.......1999-02-04
This CD contains techno-reaggae w/ voodoo tones, and former jungle experiments of 1993. But it doesn't sound 140 bpm at all! Marking the end of an anxious low moment of the rave scene in UK, this CD also reveals emerging jungle, gabba, and rythm-and-bass that would soon come to redeem darkcore. Heavy sound, it's ok, but not very self-smashing... Desole' :-(

Beachball is absolutely my favourite house song in the world. And it has been since 1996 I first heard it here in Toronto (despite that other guy who thinks it was only in Florida). Anyhoo... Every wonderful thing said in these reviews is true -- except for the CD I received from Amazon. The single is advertised as the BEACHBALL single when IN FACT it's a REMIX SINGLE. The original is nowhere to be found on the cd. The original single, which I once owned but had stolen, is an amazing CD. The one I received is okay if you're looking for remixes. But honestly, if you're looking for the original like I did -- don't buy this CD and blow money shipping it out. I'm left with the realization that it's cheaper to keep it!
WORTH WAY MORE THAN FIVE STARS.......2000-05-08
Great vocals, great music, great song.A real classic song but if there was one thing I could complain about is the awful commercialised Tall Paul mix.Original is best anyday.
Ready to Flooooow.......1999-12-18
What a great song. Beachball was tearin up radio and clubs during Spring Break 99 in Florida. I don't think this song was even popular outside of Florida which is crazy because eveyone down here loves it. All my boys from Jersey went back up north after spring break and couldn't find the song anywhere since nobody had ever heard of it. That's a shame because this song should have been massive everywhere.
Oh what memories.......1999-10-18
This is my all time favourite song, a classic in the genre.
I first heard this way back in 96 when it was quite different sounding, believe me, I think there were even magpies crowing in there!
It's mesmorising and hauntingly beautiful, and certainly makes me want to drift away to the nearest beach!
But the recent mixes are fantastic. I love it so much I created a pop video for this song for a college assignment, of course the theme being beaches.
I think this is just one of those choons you'll never forget.
**READY TO FLOW**.......1999-10-01
