After a seven-year gap between their first and second albums, Pink Martini have brought forth their third long-player just over two and a half years later. Based in Portland, Oregon, this dazzling 12-piece ensemble are led by pianist Thomas Lauderdale and fronted by vocalist China Forbes. Their rich musical journeys carry listeners everywhere from a ballroom in Havana to a cabaret in Paris. This set even includes a number in Japanese and another in Arabic. With their strings, horns, and sultry rhythms, Pink Martini find the common denominators in these musics from around the globe. Hey Eugene! is perfectly bookended with a pair of decidedly American numbers: their original "Everywhere" evokes musicals from Hollywood's golden era, while "Tea for Two" finds guest duet partner Jimmy Scott adding his emotionally riveting singing. While Lauderdale and his cohorts draw from past times and styles, they never come off as museum curators; rather, they celebrate the vibrancy that makes music timeless. --David GreenbergerAlbum Description
"This ensemble from Portland, Oregon, wowed the fabulous on the Cannes party circuit ... but that accomplishment hardly addresses the beautiful and sophisticated music of Pink Martini ... breathtaking." -- THE NEW YORKER"No matter how Pink Martini gets described, there's always an element being overlooked, a reliance on phrases such as lounge, cosmopolitan rumba, or neo-classical that only tells part of this rich story. Impressive at every musician's station, this ensemble produces music that's charming and elegant." -- VARIETY
Pink Martini--the genre-bending, best-selling, supremely talented, and raucously fun twelve-piece ensemble that the New Yorker calls simply "beautiful," sophisticated," and "breathtaking"--returns with Hey Eugene! a twelve-track sonic journey anchored by deft songwriting and a no-holds-barred dose of cabaret showmanship. "We're kind of like musical archaeologists, bringing melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create something that is modern," explains bandleader, artistic director, and founder Thomas Lauderdale.
Delivered with sultry grace by lead singer China Forbes, Hey Eugene! shines throughout--from the golden-era Hollywood melody of "Everywhere" to the French cabaret of "Ojala." Other collaborations anchor the set as well: the pan-world "Dosvedanya, Mio Bombino" with its Latin-meets-Russian beat and globetrotting subject matter, plus the Forbes-Lauderdale-penned sexy sway of "City of Night." Peruvian percussionist Martin Zarzar debuts the romantically complex "Mar Desconocido" and bassist Phil Baker adds the quiet beauty of "Cante e Dance." The group also mines the past for hidden gems, including the Japanese-language track "Taya Tan" and their first-ever recording in Arabic, "Bukra wba'do." Meanwhile, clever lyricism leads to an empowering dose of pop perfection on the title track by Forbes (about a boy she met at a party who asked for her number and never called). Finally, jazz legend Jimmy Scott makes a stunning vocal guest appearance in a duet with Forbes on the closing song "Tea for Two."
With Hey Eugene! Pink Martini has returned with an exhilarating album full of uncompromising musicianship, hope, beauty, and joy!

Hey There, Plain White T's.......2007-07-06
I'm older than the average demographic for this band, if I went to their concert I'd have to wear a "Delilah's Mom" t-shirt :) but Hey There Delilah has been playing on my radio station and the song just sticks in my head.
It is the song that every girl wishes someone would right for her. Unusual these days to hear something sweet about commitment, it's a beautiful sound with a beautiful message.
I bought the EP along with the All That We Need album. It's all young catchy pop (but not bubble-gum pop) stuff, airplay sort of stuff. It is not an acoustic band. Very enjoyable for a 46 yo mom and my 19 yo son doesn't mind me playing it in the car. He just doesn't appreciate me singing along...
BTW, I like it that the rest of the band is in the Delilah video. That shows class.
Let me be your Sampson, Delilah.......2007-07-04
In the bible Delilah is the downfall of Sampson, a strong Hebrew warrior. She keeps trying to get the secret of his strength, but when he tells her, she has Sampson's enemies do it. He tells her, if I am tied up with green saplings, then I will be powerless. He wakes up tied with green saplings, bursts the bonds, and slaughters the enemy. Whatever he tells Delilah, they try. You'd think he'd catch on, but no. He, like an idiot, tells her his real secret. His strength will never wane, as long as he never cuts his hair. Next thing you know, he's as bald as Britney Spears.
Anyway, my dog Delilah is a pretty red dog, an Australian Cattle Dog, or maybe a Kelpie. Maybe part Dingo. She is pretty, but can be contrary. She might not want to come in at night, and if you leave the gate open, and she gets out, good luck trying to get her to come back.
Anyway, my niece Kelsey told me about this band so I checked them out. I like the song, "Hey There Delilah" and it is also the name of their album. There are two versions, and the last one seems to be a sing along, like their fans heard it and everyone who came to their show knew the words. I like it that they inspire such loyalty.
Their music sounds like rough rock, but with a focus on songwriting. Maybe they would fall in the category of Emo. I played it for my dog, Delilah, and was wondering if she would respond to her name being sung. She had no reaction. She gave it two paws down. But what does she know about music anyway? I like it.
Great.......2006-09-21

Great dinner background music.
This CD will put you to sleep.......2007-02-26
While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.
Could have gone to the library for this one.
Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.

Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.Customer Reviews:
Touching.......2007-07-04
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.
Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

Like most true originals, the Ramones embodied a dizzying array of contradictions. As punk godfathers, they became the archetype for a rebellious musical ethos that could often confuse the baby for the bath water, yet at heart they were 1960s pop- and bubblegum-worshipping reactionaries. The seeming unity symbolized by their street-hood uniform (ripped jeans, deck shoes, and black leather jackets) and name (nicked from an early nom de plume of Beatle Paul) belied turmoil both personal and personnel. And the dumber-than-dumb stance of the likes of "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue," "Cretin Hop," and "Teenage Lobotomy" actually masked some of the shrewdest rock ever recorded. If Rhino/Warner Archive's two-disc anthology seems like hardly enough room to document a band with a quarter-century legacy, it's good to remember that the Ramones prided themselves on stripping every song they attempted to its elemental core, then halving it again with their patented buzzsaw, double-stop tempo. Journalist David Fricke's enclosed history is telling, if ironically packaged in a glossy hard-back edition that seems more befitting the likes of Fleetwood Mac. The nearly five dozen tracks here, reaching from the early '70s to the late '90s, stand remarkably outside of time--just like true originals. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

It's a Sensation.......2007-02-11
I own all of there Studio albums pluse three live ones and to be honest I bought this for only two resons...
1. The tracks I Don't Wanna Live This Life (Anymore and the C.J. vocal verson of R.A.M.O.N.E.S.
2. I wanted something I could just grab to least to in the car and not have to drag all my CDs with me.
Now the songs themselfs I'd give 5 stars to but there are some songs on this CD collection I thought wern't imporatant to a collection like this and there are a few I would like to have seen.
What should not have been included...
I Remember you
Here Today, Gone Tommorrow
Surfin' Bird
Don't Come Close
I Can't Make It On Time
I'm Affected
She's a Sensation
I'm Not Afraid of Life
With that I was really upset to find the song "We're a Happy Family" (A Ramones Classic) Not on this collection. Johnny once said himself that the Ramones collection out there we're focusing too much on there softer stuff to get sales. This doesn't seem much differnt to me. But at the same time you can't put just there hits on because they never had one.
The song I wish would be one this collection...
Today Your Love, Tommorrow the World
We're a Happy Family
Do You Wanna Dance
I'm Aganist It
I Wanted Everything
Outsider
Warthog
Love Kills
I guess over all a alright collection. Real True-Blue fans might be a little upset but thats life, get over it!
If your looking for just a start to the band get "Loud, Fast: Their Toughest Hits"

minus a star because i personally would recommend buying ALL of the albums.......2006-11-17
i could slap myself then. The Ramones are one of the only punk bands to give me the "awe" goosebumps. I mean along with the Damned, i think the Ramones are the co-kings of the 77 punk thing as far as i can tell. this band itself is a really unique band ....joey is the rather unique cartoonish looking vocalist..johnny is the one who is kinda of like the father figure..silent in voice, but always showing how punk was supposed to be with his unique political views and killer guitar...dee dee was the most street punk of the group.
yeah to newcomers, id recommend this, but id really recommend you start with the early albums and then work your way up...please dont throw them by the wayside simply because "i wanna be sedated" and "blitzkrieg bop" are overplayed. dont worship bands that march like sheep towards every scene following dead kennedys wannabe band and listen to one of the the best. the innovaters!!

The magical triad behind Rushmore's spunky, starry-eyed soundtrack--music supervisor Randall Poster, composer Mark Mothersbaugh, and director Wes Anderson--leaps forward a decade from that beloved soundtrack's '60s gems, in the process adopting a more pensive feel for The Royal Tenenbaums' musical backdrop. It may lack the euphoric sing-along feel of, say, Creation's "Makin' Time," but the rock and folk tracks here perfectly match the film's crumbling characters and their dilapidated relationships. The Ramones' "Judy Is a Punk" is a burst of nostalgic rebellion but surely causes a sad twinge in light of Joey Ramone's untimely death in 2001; gloom-folker Nick Drake's "Fly" and Elliott Smith's excellently depressing "Needle in the Hay"--which is used to chilling effect during a wrist-slashing scene--further deepen the dark thread running through Tenenbaums. But those who prefer the sunny disposition of Rushmore will be thrilled by the calming concoctions of Mothersbaugh, who heralds the coming of a new scene with graceful woodwind/string parts ("Scrapping and Yelling") and playful sitar pieces ("Pagoda's Theme"). Throw in the Clash's squalling "Police & Thieves" and the Velvet Underground's petal-soft "Stephanie Says" and you've got another winning soundtrack from the film biz's most in-tune music lovers. Tenenbaum or not, you can go home again. --Kristy MartinCustomer Reviews:

A beautiful track played in the scence where Royal is lying in his bed sucking down a shake and reading a book when Chas say "lights out old man" and switchs off the light. "What if Marco Polo had owned tape recorder?" This intriguing concept is raised in the liner notes to this impressive two-CD set, which wanders along ancient Asian trade routes known as the Silk Road. The first disc, Masters & Traditions, deals with formal styles performed by and for sophisticated connoisseurs. Meanwhile, the music on Minstrels and Lovers is played by amateurs who are part of daily life and thus reach a wider audience. The imaginary caravan passes through Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Afghanistan, encountering nomads, mystics, and bards along the way. The instruments are scratchy, pungent, and/or serene, while the singers weave a potent spell out of a millennium's worth of slow-changing rural and urban vistas. In the opening essay, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the project's artistic director, pleads for intercultural communication and empathy. This compilation provides an exotic, brave, entertaining first step in that direction. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
What if Marco Polo had owned a tape recorder? And what if his epic travels along the Silk Road had taken place not at the end of the 13th century, but at the beginning of the 21st? Far-fetched conjectures to be sure, but our compilation The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan offers a glimpse of the rich musical life that an intrepid and curious traveler like Marco Polo might find in the lands of the Silk Road today.Customer Reviews:
