Great CD.......2006-08-06
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

The best crystal bowl cd ever? Yeah right..........2007-02-17
Frankly, I was a little surprised, I love this kind of music and my last purchase of Stephen Halpern's Crystal Bowls was disappointing to say the least as it was filled with synthesizers and other cheesy New Age effects. This one is not and I wouldn't even lump it with a New Age tag (as the product description has). It' just truly beautiful music. The resonance is wonderful and the first chakra track is great for getting me, or my space back into alignment. Simply put it on in the background and clear your space. Wonderful! The other tracks on the CD have beautiful touches including shamanic instruments like the Buffalo drums, rattles, native flutes, rain sticks and other instruments. All appropriately added, expertly played and NO New Age cheese. What's interesting about it is that the CD recorded in one evening with no manipulations. I love reading books and listening to audio of people that have opened their heart - you can feel that in the work... in a similar way I think this is transmitted through music and it most definately is here.
I have since recommended and raved about this CD to all my friends. If you're a healer with a practice, you're going to want it for background music or just clearing your space. For everyone else, it's wonderful for relaxation and coming back into balance (put on your headphones for a real treat) or just some soothing music to play after a hard day or most definately for people who are not feeling well.
Other crystal bowl CDs I like include Benjamin Iobst Seven Metal Singing Bowls of Tibet and Crystal Voices by Deborah Van Dyke. Daniel Goleman's work is also fantastic - Chakra Dance, Chakra Chants and his Om CD (although all his work is good).
I highly recommend this beautiful CD. There are extra touches, with different instruments so if you're using it purely for meditation, that may distract you (as some other reviewers seem to have experienced). That is, I guess, a matter of personal preference - some people would be okay with the other instruments. It's the kind of CD where you that makes you go and buy everything the artist has ever produced. Of the hundreds of the healing type CDs I have, this is, and will remain, well and truly at the top of the heap. This might just be... the best crystal bowl CD ever!

Transport Yourself to Higher Realms!.......2001-08-18
I first heard Elivia play solo in La Costa. Within a year she had assembled a wide variety of bowls of different tones. In the Fall of 2000 Ark Ministries for Illumination (with another local church) sponsored a healing concert with Elivia and her bowls here in the mountains. The result was amazing. In the summer of 2001 she was again sponsored so she could perform under the pines in the pristine mountain community of Big Bear. Her ensemble had grown to a larger number of bowls, other instruments and musicians. Larger crowds flocked to see her and the local television station even showed up to film her. Afterwards the concert was the buzz around town.
Elivia's concerts now take her around the Southwest every weekend with great hoards of people anticipating their arrival. I was thrilled when this CD came out since now people everywhere could have this incredible experience in their own home.
Buy this CD and find out why others are so excited about it. BUT I CAUTION YOU --make sure you don't listen to it while driving! ;-)

Album Description
The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles performed remarkable shows featuring the music of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, with guest stars Davis Gaines and Christine Ebersole. The Chorus, in its inimitable fashion, recollected, reviewed and recast many of the standards from this vast repertoire, with new arrangements and orchestrations by Ron Abel. The shows were electrifying in their musical and dramatic energy, and the audience, as you will hear on this live recording, caught the spirit of not only the Chorus' singing and staging, but also the wondrous magic of the lyrics and music of these giants from the musical theater. The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles proudly celebrates its 20th Anniversary season with the release of this, our sixth recording, A Grand Night For Singing.Customer Reviews:
Kicking the Dust Off America's "Standards".......1999-09-10
The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles proved something quite astounding during this live performance of show tunes by Rodgers and Hammerstein: with absolute dignity and without changing a single lyric, they put a political spin on well-known material, kicking the dust off music every listener thinks they already know. Hearing 150 gay men sing "If I Loved You" causes you to re-examine the humanity of Hammerstein's lyrics, the universality of love as a potent emotion for gays and straights alike. "You've Got To Be Taught," written in the 1940s, seems to be ripped from this morning's headlines, as these courageous singers challenge the discrimination that gays face throughout the world today.
There are plenty of laughs too, as the audience revels in a hilariously complex "Do-Re-Mi," and a buoyant medley from "Oklahoma." Star turns by Davis Gaines and Christine Ebersole are welcome contributions of pure confection, as are the clever arrangements of Ron Abel. There isn't a flaw to be found anywhere in this performance.
The real winner, surprisingly, is Richard Rodgers. Many listeners in this hip-hop era perceive his music to be saccharine, or worse, musty. The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles hones the edge back onto his material, proving that these tunes are as topical now as when they were first composed. Richard Rodgers' songs have earned their place as American "standards." With this performance, the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles proves to be one of America's greatest standards too!

Rare spin of Carter's early stage work.......2003-11-27
She shows tremendous command of the comedy stage, lampooning the lyrics of Marty Robbins' "Big Iron," reciting a humorous poem about Elvis, and tossing off frenetic asides and barbs. But much like Buck Owens, when she swings from comedy into song, she's riveting, as are the top-notch pickers with whom she's surrounded. Supported by a full band, with electric guitars and pedal steel, these recordings are fuller than the parallel Hayride volume recently issued on Johnny Cash.
A pair of tracks from 1961, highlighting a "Stars of the Opry" show at the Hayride, features Carter singing and joking with the Wilburn Brothers. But when they swing into A.P. Carter's "Worried Man Blues," the Kingston Trio's then-recent hit simply disappears in their wake. A 1962 appearance yields Carter's rapping version of "The Heel," and a 1965 visit is highlighted by her duet with Johnny Cash on "It Ain't Me, Babe," and her backup singing on Cash's Sun-era "Ballad of a Teenage Queen."
Sound quality isn't state-of-the-art, but it's clear, and Carter and the band are nicely isolated - no doubt reproduced from transcription records of the original KWKH broadcasts. The tracks are framed by Carter's stage patter and comedy, along with applause and cheering. It gives you a good sense of how much the audience loved Carter's combination of song and shtick. This is a rare glimpse of Carter standing tall on her own, unsupported by either the Carter Family or Johnny Cash. These recordings are a great find on both a beloved artist and the legendary show for which she performed.

Hand of Doom Manufacturer: Idaho Music ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B00006FSUI Release Date: 2002-09-03 |
Album Description
Perhaps the most high-powered tribute band in the history of rock, Hand of Doom is the supergroup side project of Melissa Auf Der Maur (Auf De Maur, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins). Formed in homage to the mighty Black Sabbath, Hand of Doom (which features Auf Der Maur doing her first real turn on lead vocals) recorded their debut live on LA's Sunset Strip during now-legendary shows at the Whisky, Troubadour and Spaceland.Hand of Doom gives their own high-energy spin to such Sabbath milestones as "Paranoid" and "War Pigs," while adding contemporary touches like turntables, a DJ and - in the role of Ronnie James Dio - guest lead vocals by Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age!
Customer Reviews:

Melissa ROCKS!!! Does Ozzy better than Ozzy!!!.......2004-11-08
Good performances, but too much of a carbon copy........2004-05-01
So what's the problem? Like so many others (even the ever-inventive Faith No More) who have covered Black Sabbath songs, Hand of Doom has stayed entirely too true to the original arrangements and sounds. Black Sabbath is the kind of band that holds a mystical power over its acolytes and it's not surprising that musicians who love the band have a preconceived notion of how these songs should sound. But the tracks on Hand of Doom, though I enjoyed them, sound so close to the originals that I wondered why I didn't just put on the original band. Auf der Maur's female vocals make them minutely different, but I definitely wish Hand of Doom would have been more inventive and done different things with these iconic songs.
And another thing: Do we need to hear yet more renditions of "War Pigs", "Iron Man" and "Paranoid", three of the most legendary (and therefore most tired) songs in the metal canon? The track selection on this EP shows a lack of adventurousness, something Black Sabbath never lost sight of. I would have loved to hear less obvious cover choices such as "Megalomania", "Killing Yourself to Live", "Am I Going Insane (Radio)", "Supernaut", "Zero the Hero", "Trashed", "The Wizard", and "Cornucopia". Instead, we get the three staples from the Paranoid album, songs I wouldn't mind never hearing covered ever again.
Hand of Doom is not bad as music; it's just at a loss for something to say. Hearing a completely faithful cover band may be enjoyable as a live experience, but a record demands more. Why perform and record songs in exactly the same way as they've been done, and done quite well, 30 years ago? I'd definitely recommend Melissa Auf der Maur's idiosyncratic solo record in lieu of Hand of Doom.
Melissa Auf der Maur Rules!.......2004-02-17
