4 out of 5 stars Walsh's quintessential '80s album.......2007-03-31

If you want to know whether or not peering into Walsh's later-day output would be worth your while, this album is the wisest place to start. After the (first) dissolution of the Eagles, Walsh returned to his solo career, but in a different, lighter, more pop-influenced direction.

Admittedly, it's lightweight stuff, especially compared to his James Gang/Barnstorm era output, though a comparison could be drawn between this album and the eclectic pop of The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get. This release essentially marked the transition from blues-based hard rock with a wry sense of humor to a general sort of silliness with an accompanying lightness to the music. The exception hre is "Life of Illusion", a 10-year old demo he finally fleshed out; the grainy sound, mostly-acoustic guitars (save for a nice slide solo in the middle) and drunken mariachi trumpets (courtesy of Kenny Passarelli) give the song a sound like "the Beatles meet Santo and Johnny," as one critic put it.

The rest of the album is an amiable blend of generally upbeat of pop-rock, with good-natured humor like the wordplay throughout "Things" and the silly hoedown-rock of "Down on the Farm". The more serious tracks, like "Made Your Mind Up", "Rivers", and "You Never Know" are not unlike some of his older, harder-edged tunes, if they were toned down a bit and given a shine rather than layers of heavy distorted guitars. It suits them fairly well, making for a surprisingly nimble balance between his roots and the current environment. Unfortunately, even if you like this album, his output goes downhill hereafter; some of it's not bad, but he hasn't been as good since.

Overall, the four stars are because I've got a soft spot for this album, as it's the first Joe Walsh album--and the album that got me into the guy--when I was rustling through my parents' collection of old vinyls. Subtract a star and a half if lightweight goofiness and pop-rock isn't your thing, but on its own terms, it's a pretty good album and it shows Walsh making the transition to the '80s rather well; a shame he couldn't keep it up.

5 out of 5 stars Great music... Don't listen to Macho Man!.......2004-12-22

Joe Walsh is a spectacular musician with talent that makes other musical artists look pathetic. Too bad Macho Man is too busy being gay to realize it. Whether with the James Gang, Eagles, or Solo, Joe Walsh rules. Anyone who gives this release less than four stars doesn't know what good music is. Macho Man, shut the hell up and get a life outside bashing the (very good) reviews of Mr. Reardon. I am the Reaper, and I'll be seeing you in hell very soon.

4 out of 5 stars Down on the Farm.......2004-07-12

I give this album 4 stars because of Life of Illusion and Down on the Farm. These are two great songs. Life of illusion is a serious song with excellent guitar work. Down on the farm is a comical song that also has some cool guitar in it. Mabey this album isn't his best or anywhere near it, but there are at least two good songs on it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2003-10-20

This is a great album... not at the level of his previous works maybe, but still great music. My fave track is "Life Of Illusion".

What a brainless review of Mr. MUSICFAN from Boston Mass.
Joe Walsh recorded more albums without the Eagles than with them. He's an established name already even before the Eagles, so who cares who's the brains behind that band, right?? :-S I love the Eagles but that's not the point here.
Surely it was not Joe Walsh's band and I don't think he was interested either in being a main character in it. He just participated, period. Gave the band some great songs. Just listen to "Pretty Maids All In A Row" & "In The City", but that's it. It was never the focus of his career.
Again, he already was enjoying of a sucessful solo career. So that shows your ingnorance man ;-)

4 out of 5 stars GOOD LISTENING.......2003-10-12

There are some great hooks on this under-appreciated opus and some fine guitar riffs, as well. "Rivers (of the Hidden Funk)" is probably the best cut, but "A Life of Illusion" and "Things" are also right up there. This album was originally released in 1981 on Elektra and, as a rule, they don't put out junk. You can rip this one and combine its tracks with the ones you like from SMOKER, and you'll have a good listening experience that might make the commute to and from work a tad joyful, if that's possible.

Robert Walter got his start in the early-'90s as one of the founding members of the Greyboy Allstars, a popular band on the then-fledgling groove circuit that also featured saxophonist Karl Denson. After Greyboy broke up, Walter struck out on his own in 1998 by leading the 20th Congress, which gained favorable notices on 2000's Money Shot. Walter still keeps the Congress in session, but this time out he opted to work with the veteran crew of Harvey Mason, Phil Upchurch, Red Holloway, and Chuck Rainey, all players who were there when the funk hit the jazz fan back in the '60s. The session has a nice loose feel to it where we can even hear the players hooting and hollering on "Bakery Blues." Backed by this stellar crew, Walter rips through some burnin' keyboard solos, stepping aside to let other guys get some. Fans will recognize a few tunes from the Congress songbook, but this is definitely an album of new music, with "2% Body Fat" being an absolute killer opener. --Tad Hendrickson

Hey man when i heard the frollicking-fingered-fella had a new project out I did not hesitate. I got two copies because, knowing the Money Shot's intensity and grooves, this one had to be just too sweet. I, Like the other reviewer from the UK, had this masterpiece turned up loud. This disk, which includes so many cagey veterans, was all the way live. The Tease and Wade in the Water are supperb pieces. Walter co-wrote many of these great pieces of music with the veteran laden lineup. This is a keeper and meant to be placed near your stereo at all times people. Help came from all areas including his 20th Congress Percussionist, Chucky Prada. Harvey Mason is amazing and a steadying force on the drum kit. My personal favourite is the last song on the disk. Luck has nothing to do with it. The piano playing is unbeleivable here. Thanks Robert for mixing things up and creating a butt-wiggling, jazzy party experience.

    5 out of 5 stars Double Wow - Plus!.......2001-11-25

What a storming assult on the senses this album is! Being of a certain age I can best describe it as a funked up,freaked out Johnny and the Hurricanes set. Walter himself plays thunderous keyboards, with an awful lot of Hammond B3, but is supported by a band that thrusts forward at every twist and turn. Phil Upchurch provides a huge breadth of guitar styles - with a lot of wah, whilst Red Holloway plays tenor sax with an urgency that underlines just how spontaneous the recording must have been. The rhythm section of Chuck Rainey and Harvey Mason underpin everything magnificently.Standouts are difficult to pick, but the title track represents the cohesion that the group achieved. I also enjoyed "The tease" and "Swap meet" as well as "Bakery Blues", where Red Holloway supplies the vocals. I always seem to exhort potential buyers to "play this album loud" but this one really does repay listening to flat out and cranked up. Repeated listening suggests that this is going to figure somewhere in my "Best of 2001" list. This is an album that you really ought to take a chance on buying if you like souped up funky soul jazz. Great listening pleasure!

5 out of 5 stars All the Groove you're lookin' for.......2001-11-06

Everyone that has heard Robert Walter's 20th Congress or the even earlier Greyboy Allstars knows that this guy can lay down some of the funkiest and Jazziest keys around. Now, on this album he gets down to funk side of the Blues. Along with some of the most classic artists from the 60's and 70's - Such as Harvey Mason and Phil Upchurch. You totally get a instant smile on your face from track one because it is a wonderful sound of the old blending with the new. It is raw and straight forward recorded only in two days. It is all the groove you could ask for and more. It includes classic covers, and a few tracks from the 20th Congress repetoire, and some completely new originals. All I can say is that when you hear the slammin funk/jazz/blues mix on this album all you can think of is how much fun these guys must have had makin' it and it comes across in the final product. A must have in my book.

There Goes the Neighborhood, like much of Roomful's oeuvre, is a fairly standard set of blues offerings with more than a hint of rock, dripping with horns and studded with blistering guitar and piano solos. There's an appropriate mix of mid-tempo tunes (Backseat Blues, Blue, Blue World, the title track), up-tempo rockers (Just Like Dynamite, She's Mine), and slower, moodier pieces (Lost Mind, I Smell Trouble, The Comeback), though all the material is focused on light-heartedness and entertainment. If there's not much innovation here, that's not exactly a problem; Roomful hums along like a well-oiled machine, every part in place and never missing a beat. --Genevieve Williams

I have long been a fan of Roomful of Blues and have some of their other cds. I will admit that when Sugar Ray left , I did not think I would still like them with a new singer. Was I wrong! I like them even better now. The main reason I like it so much is the amazing voice of Mac Odom. Where has he been hiding I want to know! I predict he will be a big name some day. He wrote Back Street Blues and it is a good tune. I like every song on the cd. I bought it and have listened to it so many times I'll probably wear it out. The band is great too of course. Tight horn section, good guitar....and that VOICE.He has such a vocal range--fromm deep and smooth and sexy to high notes. Makes for one rockin' cd and I love the slow tunes too. But you cannot listen to this cd and not feel like dancing!I recently saw the band in concert and they played a lot of these new songs. Catch them Live if you can. And buy this cd!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Neighborhood Just Got Better!.......1998-09-20

"Roomful is" at it again, finally! Their long time motto is "Aim the Beat at Their Feet." This is a band that blends traditional "Big band jazz" with the Blues. The band has changed (evolved) direction with this new release featuring the Blues more than the big band sound. Chris Vachon's smokin' guitar, Mac Odom's soulful voice and holy moley, a "Horn section to die for." When do you get to hear a "trombone or a bari sax" take the lead. Only when Roomful lets it loose. They are the best kept secret in the business, 28 years in the business. It is a crime that they aren't on Letterman or Leno to showcase the Power that a band like this offers. They can come to my "Neighborhood" any time. Don't plan to sit when this CD starts! Their earlier albums are superb: Live at Lupo's will knock you out!

5 out of 5 stars There Goes The Neighborhood? Here's the new neighborhood!!!.......1998-09-05

Roomful's "There Goes The Neighborhood" takes the boys from Providence in a whole new direction. If you're expecting the same sound as "Dance All Night" and "Under One Roof", you might be a bit disappointed as I was originally. After listening to Mac Odom's soulful stylings a second time, I was hooked. Seemlessly switching from songs as diverse as Doyle Bramhall and Duke Ellington, Mac just might be the best of all of the Roomful frontmen. With a voice that sounds like the second coming of Percy Mayfield, the boys open with Mac's own "Backseat Blues". Followed up with the title cut and Chris Vachon's "Just Like Dynamite". After hearing Percy Mayfield's "Lost Mind", I'm sure he's looking down and smiling. Don't forget, the band lost almost half of it's ranks at Christmas, but the additions have proven to be more than worthy. John Wolf and Kevin May keep the horn section as strong as ever, Marty Ballou brings a strong bass in and why oh why Albert Weisman and his B-3 haven't been with the band before is beyond me. If evolution is the survival of the fittest then Roomful has evolved (again) into the strength of the nation's R&B bands.

i have seen "da bums" live, and this cd captures the excitment of their shows. if you like "royal crown revue", you'll love these guys. the horn arrangements are perfection, and the lyrics get the story in each song across well. the band calls the music "brass nuckle swing", and it's true. in a word, some of the best "new swing" out there!

This is a pretty good cd but it is not worth paying full price of a cd for only 6 songs. The band is alright and shows signs of improvement and I think they might make a name of themselves if they work more on putting more onto a cd. The song "On the Waterfront" is pretty swank and is almost worth buying this cd simply for this song. So don't go out in a rush to buy this cd, you know. If you've ever got an extra 20 bucks or so and you don't know what to do with it, this cd would be a good choice. And for any TRUE swinger out there this should be on your priority list to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting approach to Afro-Puerto Rican music.......2005-10-02

On this CD, you will hear Willie Colon's powerful band, backed up by Rubén Blades and Héctor Lavoe on chorus, exploring the two main Afro-Puerto Rican genres: "bomba" & "plena", with the master plenero Mon Rivera on vocals. Also, featuring on timbales and "quinto" is "Kako" Bastar. So, in terms of the sound, is as powerful as it gets.

My only complaint is that Willie didn't risk much on this one: he didn't take the Afro-Boricua rhythms to new grounds; he stuck pretty much to the traditional sound (with Afro-Cuban instrumentation, of course). He did come up with interesting stuff (listen to Mosaico #2), but apart of that, he didn't give his imagination room on this one.

Still, this is a must have if you are into Salsa or Afro-Caribbean music, as I am. "Pena de amor" and "Ya llegó" are classics.

      5 out of 5 stars Oh, WOW!.......2001-11-09

This cd provides buyers with some of the best interpretations of Puerto Rico's Plenas and Bombas by the late great singer/composer/ musician/arranger Mon Rivera and the legendary multitalented Willie Colon. The best musicians were used in this recording and Salsa stars such as the late Hector Lavoe provide background vocals. A must buy for those who like Afrocaribbean/Puerto Rican music!

1 out of 5 stars A virtually worthless collection of garage rock scraps.......2007-06-11

The third volume of Collectibles' There Goes the Neighborhood series brings together live recordings from four different 60s garage bands. Now, while these groups may have been capable musicians with good studio recordings, their stage shows were apparently full of dull, derivative performances. Most of these songs are by-numbers covers of other people's hits: The Mad Hatters are represented by their version of the R&B standard "Time Is On My Side," in which they attempt to emulate the Rolling Stones' famous version, right down to Mick Jagger's sneer. The result is a boring and unoriginal tune that sounds like something produced by a second-rate bar band. The group's version of "Satisfaction" is a little better: They plod their way through the song with real energy and enthusiasm. However, it's still a pretty uninteresting performance, marred by the usual lack of originality as well as an incredibly boring "extended rave-up section," which is essentially the song's main riff being played over and over again, interupted only by the occasional drum roll. In other words, it sounds like the band forgot how to end the song. Their version of "Mickey's Monkey" (a Motown classic originally performed by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles) is about the closest thing on this CD to a genuine garage rock gem- there's real excitement in the song's bouncing rhythms and inarticulate vocals. Still, the group goes on for way too long, throwing in an uninteresting guitar solo for "good" measure. The final Mad Hatters track, "What's Your Hurry," is just plain weird: It consists of some announcer making a few weird jokes, the introduction of a different band, random crowd noise, and a thirty second song fragment. It doesn't even have novelty value. The next six songs are from a show by the Sting Rays. Following an unutterably stupid introduction by some local D.J. (who predicts that the 'Rays are "gonna make it all the way to the top"), the group rips into an absolutely awful rendition of "Fun Fun Fun." There is a certain train-wreck appeal in their disasterous attempts to reproduce the Beach Boys' trademark harmonies, as well as the dreadfully out-of-tune guitars, but that's about it. The band performs dreary, uninteresting renditions of "You Can't Do That," "Mr. Moonlight," and "Love Potion Number 9" before returning to so-bad-it's-almost-funny territory with two shambling, passionless, and incompetent Beatles covers. Up next are the Apollos, who provide a nothing-special instrumental called "The In Crowd" and a phoned-in version of "California Girls." The Briks are energetic, but similarly unentertaining: Their "It's Not Easy" (to be honest, I have no idea if this is a cover or not) sounds like dull, generic blues rock, and their cover of the Rolling Stones' "Let's Spend the Night Together" is too stiff to be fun. This edition also includes two CD-only "bonus tracks." The first is a radio interview with Kenny Dino of the Mad Hatters. Kenny himself sounds bored out of his mind, the interviewer is a complete square, and the subject matter ranges from excruciatingly uninteresting to horrendously dated (the interviewer admits that he can see no difference between the Beatles and the Dave Clark Five). There's a little bit of kitsch value, but that's about it. The other bonus track is a thirty-three second radio spot that features an excerpt from the Mad Hatters' "I Need Love," a single that's probably trump anything on this collection. Again, this track has novelty value, and does provide insight as to what local radio sounded like back in the mid 60s, but that's about it. The liner notes are alright, with decent band histories- they also implicitly admit that the featured bands' studio recordings are far more interesting than these live takes. However, there are no pictures (except for the four on the cover) or commentary on the individual tracks. The result is a boring, pointless, and occasionally weird collection that will barely be of interest to anyone, even garage rock completists.

5 out of 5 stars Its freakin' great!.......2000-09-13

This is by far the best cd I've ever owned. Even though mine has all eight tracks, most of the best songs are on here anyway. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars This is one cd every fan should own!.......1999-05-25

Dem Brooklyn Bums, with their fast-paced, in your face swing beat, are easily one of the best bands in the biz. Boozin' and a Cruzin' gets the album bumpin' and it doesn't let down 'til the last notes of Idle Chatter. These guys really know what they're doing, and it shows.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD despite the fact that it has only 6 tracks.......1999-01-03

My one-line summary pretty much says it all

5 out of 5 stars In your face swing.......1998-10-08

This band is has a sound that could only come from New York. They have the attitude. The one comment that I have heard and can definitely agree with is that they are Beasty Boys meet swing. Truly a great sound.

5 out of 5 stars Bing Bang Baby.......1998-09-08

I have had the priveledge of seeing these guys live, indescribable showmen. The recording does a great job of capturing there onstage presence. A must-buy for all lovers of swing music. See ya at the next gig!
