Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars TREVI ROCKS!.......2004-08-30

No Matter what all those wannabe stars girls say!, Gloria Trevi! will always Rock!...surrounded by her own controversy, by 1994 more safe years to Gloria, her album masturbada que nunca, established her finally as an ICON of Mexican Music. Her sincere voice deliver clear and believable tracks. This album sold like crazy and made people believe in a long time relation with Gloria Trevi. So sad that she became a victim of a man and some wannabe star girls. She has talent that is undeniable. *****FIVE STARS

5 out of 5 stars Far beyond.......2003-11-02

If you are not Mexican you may not even know who Gloria Trevi is, or maybe as a Mexican you may never think about of her as something else than a popular singer.

Back in the late 80's a bizarre combination of pop-rocker singer dressed like Madonna in her early years appeared and shocked not only the hermetical and narrow world of Mexican pop music, but also the Media and more deeply the society from that time.
Why was it shocked? her daring lyrics and protest anthems were the reflection of a repressed young lady claiming for understanding and self-expression on a self-repressed society.
Opposite to what many said, her stand in the world of mass media grew rapidly and her influence on youngsters, teenagers and specially low-class people was subject to discussion and analysis by well-recognised writers and intellectuals in Mexico's sphere.

The years passed by, fame came, millions of pesos were accumulated and rumours started to be heard. In 1999 this flamboyant sexy rebel, one of her backing singers and her manager were formally accused of sexual abuse. The result: four years in jail... and final resolution has not been given yet.
Far beyond from the typical mass media scandal and press profits, what is noticeable of this singer is her past and current position in Mexico's society. Guilty or not guilty, what is left is the musical production and its effect on more than a million of teenagers who now (we) have become adults.
To some degree, listening to her was speaking out for ourselves. Daring singing the rebel-like lyrics was challenging this prejudiced and authoritarian society and that is the inner value of her work.
Whether her music and supposed behaviour is good or not, Gloria Trevi is an icon of the moment when Mexican X Generation commenced to awake during a time it was undeniably necessary.

Regarding this album
This 1994 work is characterised by a roller coaster of pictures: anger, desperation, sympathy, protest and sense of humour.
Music sounds better than in other productions by inviting musicians such as percussionist Paulinho Da Costa and recording in LA with Rob Russell's intervention.
Metal guitars are a must and, bass, horns section and drums sound deeper and clearer than in her previous albums where the cheap sound of cheap keyboards was abundant. The incorporation of emphatic chorus and suppression of unnecessary shrilled cries was a good point for it.
Remarkable songs: The two "lower-class" and "less-educated" people anthems: «A gatas» (Crawling) and «Qué bueno que no fui Lady Di!» (It's so good not to be Lady Di!), two ingenious compositions of double-meaning sentences «A la madre» (To the mother) and «La papa sin catsup» (French fries without ketchup) ; the already classic deep blue song «El recuento de los daños» (The inventory of damages) and a slow brilliant ballad about counting on someone else «Siempre a mí» (Always on me).

Why taking the time to review something dated almost ten years ago? The answer is simple: Gloria Trevi is still subject to profitable business and for those who care about the singer itself, listening to her music is an introspection to the mysterious world of human behaviour.
