The Cuban music craze launched by the success of the Buena Vista Social Club has sailed into the global music community, but there seems to only be a few great records trickling into the U.S. market each year. The third effort from songwriter Pedro Luis Ferrer, Natural, is one of them. This timeless album of guaracha music features the earthy guitar and tres work of Ferrer as well as light percolating hand percussion. Ferrer's baritone voice rings out like the late Compay Segundo as he shares tales of everyday life in his country. He's also well matched to back-up singers Lena Ferrer and Lerlys Morales: they add a feminine counterpoint to the robust Ferrer, giving the album a real familial feel. Natural seemingly captures a night of sitting around the living room singing songs after a family dinner. Of course the skill and beauty of the music make it special, even if we can't be there in the room with them. -- Tad Hendrickson

Not that the health of Cuba's musical tradition was ever seriously in doubt, but if anyone was contemplating a trip to the bedside Cuban troubadour Pedro Luis Ferrer's enchanting new Rustico should put those thoughts to rest. Ferrer specializes in the kind of stately and romantic son that much of the rest of the world associates with the Buena Vista Social Club, but in his hands the music is anything but a museum piece. Ferrer hails from the eastern end of Cuba and draws from some musical styles less well known outside the island, like changui and trova espirituana--the latter a style of singing from Central Cuba--and he throws in some far-flung musical elements as well, like the Peruvian percussion of "Como Vivire, Mi Cholita?" and the marimbula--a larger version of the African mbira thumb piano--that functions as the bass on much of the album. The result is refreshing, with Ferrer's rich tres lines and the lush backing vocal chorus sometimes recalling the countrified Cuban swing of Eliades Ochoa but with a more far-reaching twist. This spirit of reinvention extends to Ferrer's lyrics (translated from Spanish in the liner notes), which may surprise listeners not used to social commentary from modern Cuban songwriters. "I paid for a watermelon yesterday/with a two month salary/that's why my heart/sometimes bursts" sings Ferrer in "Fundamento." In "Congo Vegetariano" he notes the irony of vegetarians in a land where no one can afford meat, proving that at least for Ferrer, honoring tradition includes bringing it into the present. --Ezra Gale

Never heard of the man and I picked this up in NYC on a whim. Have not been able to stop listening to it. It's fresh. The vocals and the musicianship blend beautifully and the tunes are gorgeous. For any fan of latin music this is a can't miss CD. Check it out.

Drawing from traditional Cuban sounds, in Rústico, Pedro Luis Ferrer creates with gusto, bravado, and intelligence a brand new genre: changüisa, a mix of changuí, trova espirituana, and coros de claves. He has also created steamy debates by singing the oppressive feelings Cubans face today, as we can hear in the song "¿Cómo Viviré?" ("How will I live? / If I'm watched everywhere I go/ if my money is worthless/ if I'm alienated and no one listens/...Hunger and waiting are allowed/ Are allowed fear and absence/ Love is proscribed.")

      4 out of 5 stars Sizzling tempesto.......2005-02-26

I like this album, it has much good music on it.
five stars worth of cuban magic.

Only slight let down (and reason I had to deduct a star) was when i put it into my DVD player, there were no pictures. And to me words without pictures is just like reading the bible, eventually gets kinda boring, with all the "thou shalt", "thou shalt nots" and "Moses parted the sea, only to see that God had just burned his last hemp bush" and so forth.

Master of the guaracha song form, Pedro Luis Ferrer premieres in America with this self-titled release, a laid-back collection of Cuban music featuring Ferrer's soulful guitar and tres playing. Somewhat of a departure from the Buena Vista Social Club scene, Ferrer's sound is modern, employing women backup singers and a folkish vocal style. But make no mistake, Ferrer's Cuban roots do shine through on all tracks via thick percussion and traditional melodies--what's unique here is his vocal style and sparse instrumentation. More akin to a lone singer-songwriter than entertainer with full-scale orchestra, Ferrer sings lyrics of social commentary in a genuine, reposed voice while oftentimes only percussion and backup vocals complement his expert guitar playing. Not a fiery wall of brassy attitude, but rather a man and his musical vision... and an outstanding one at that. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars The best Cuban Trovadour.......2005-04-14

Pedro Luis Ferrer is not a simple guitarist. He is concertist. In Pedro Luis' music you can identify all traditional Cuban music: "son", "guaracha", "guaguanco", "tonadas", "guajiras" and many more. The lyric is poetry; it does no matter if it is a love or a humor song. Each song is the result of a deep professional work. This singer represent the new generation of the traditional Cuban music. If you want to feel the Cuban music in a new fashion I recommend Pedro Luis Ferrer.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Inspiring.......2003-03-15

I was in Cuba during New Year's 2003 and saw Pedro Luis Ferrer live! He is THE folksinger for the Cuban people. He incorporates native rythyms from the countryside as well as some of the Latino beat we are used to. His lyrics are social satire and commentary. I utterly love this CD. I purchased it directly from the artist and treasure it. My husband and I listen to it almost every Friday night with our Mojitos. Truly a Cuban gem.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!.......2002-03-06

I got a hold of this CD by accident a couple of months ago. Been listening to it constantly. Cannot get it out of my head. Voice reminds me of Guillermo Portabales. Great music and lyrics.

      1 out of 5 stars A Serious Disappointment.......2001-07-19

Having heard Ferrer's electrifying performance of his song "Mariposa" on the soundtrack to the film "Before Night Falls," I purchased his self-titled album with high hopes. The letdown was profound. The dynamic guitar playing, impassioned singing, infectious rhythm and excellent production values of "Mariposa" are nowhere to be found. Given the fact that he employs a full complement of Cuban musicians playing traditional instruments, you would expect this album to really rock. Instead, Ferrer bores us with listless, monotonous songs and arrangements. Not a single cut on this album bears even the slightest resemblance to "Mariposa"; in fact, you would never know that Ferrer plays the guitar, except for the numerous pictures in the CD of him holding one. The sound quality of this CD is also poor, with Ferrer's voice buried in the instrumental mix. The best thing about this CD, and it certainly isn't worth the price of admission, is the lovely singing of Lena Ferrer, who accompanies him occasionally. I played this album for a Colombian friend with a huge Cuban music collection, thinking that perhaps I was missing the point. After 30 seconds each of the first two songs, she asked me to take it off the stereo and move on to something else! Don't suffer the same fate. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Pedro Luis Ferrer.......2001-06-30

This is one of my all-time favorite albums. If James Taylor were born in Cuba, he might sound like Pedro Luis Ferrer. His style is probably "nueva trova." The drums sound delicious. The backup singers send chills up my spine. The songs are fascinating. Highly recommended.
