One of my favorite instruments to listen to is the classical guitar. I currently have all of Terry Muska's CDs in my collection. These CDs are relaxing and inspiring and I often listen to them when I am drawing or webdesigning.

This music is traditional and will last from generation to generation as it has. It gathers people from all ages. The spanish guitar is made for the soothing and comfort of the soul with this CD. You will want to listen to this CD forever, you will never out grow it.

Pifarro's Best Album!.......2003-07-08

Although Pifarro has released some wonderful stuff in the past couple of years, "Los Ministriles" is still, in my opinion, their best offering to date. Simply, this recording is a delight, and although I've heard it dozens of times, it always remains fresh and enjoyable upon each re-aquaintance. There is something about music from the Spanish renaissance that sets it apart from almost anything being written in Europe at the time, and Pifarro captures the fun, spontanaity and pure beauty that this music exudes from note one. Highly recommended.

Fun, syncopated music from Piffaro, the Renaissance Band........2002-11-25

The full title of this album is "Los Ministriles: Spanish Renaissance Wind Music", and it features a wide variety of genteel and folksy tunes that would have been played by multi-instrumentalist minstrels employed by the nobles and clergy of the time. Originally founded in 1980 as the Philadelphia Renaissance Wind Band, Piffaro took its current name from the Italian version of "Pfeifer", or piper. And indeed, this group boasts a wide variety of wind instruments: entire families of shawms, recorders and crumhorns; along with sackbuts, a bass dulcian and various bagpipes; accompanied by Spanish essentials such as harp, vihuela, guitar and percussion. The lively and intricate syncopation of Renaissance Spanish compositions lends a distinctive character to this CD in comparison with the group's other releases, which are also very good. Try their Flemish and German recordings too--"A Flemish Feast: Flemish Renaissance Wind Music" and "Stadtpfeiffer: Music of Renaissance Germany".

Renaissance Music is Anything but Boring!.......2000-03-20

I will admit an immediate bias for this recording, as my Renaissance Music instructor's husband is one of the players. However, leaving that fact out entirely, this disc, like all of Piffaro's recordings, is a joy. I listen to them everywhere, especially when I need to stay awake on long drives. To hear such difficult ensemble instruments as shawms, krumhorns and recorders in a resonant environment, played perfectly in tune is rare. This particular disc ranges from organ-like works for recorder consort to rousing dances like ¡Si abrá in este baldres! Unlike CDs that contain lengthy masses with no lighter interludes (although these are equally gorgeous, especially the Gabrielli Consort's Moralès Mass for the Feast of St. Isidore), Piffaro's CDs are widely varied in terms of instrumentation, style, tempo and inflection. I have played this for many people who claim to not like early music and have had much favorable response, not to mention the personal enjoyment and sheer fun!

Fun music.......1998-11-21

Much of this CD is typical Renaissance music with period instruments: a delight to listen to, but sounding a lot like other Renaissance delights. What I found really unique is that this is the first selection of Renaissance music which I'm familiar with that includes bagpipes among the instuments. Crumhorns and sackbuts are nice but familiar; the bagpipe selections blew me away.

great interpretations, great composer.......2007-05-07

hhhhmmmm....i think the poster below be is not giving Castelnuovo-Tedesco enough credit. He was a film composer but he was a Serious composer first and foremost and often resented being a film composer. His compositions were admired by the violinist Jascha Heifetz, whom also performed many of his works. Toscanini also admired Tedesco's music. Castelnuovo-Tedesco's guitar music is often more profound then most of the Segovia-era composers (including Torroba,Turina, and Ponce in the bunch)

Needless to say Micheli does an excellant job with these pieces.

As a classical guitarist myself, I listened to this cd before i was familiar with the music of Castenuevo-Tedesco. This is probably the kind of thing you'd only really like if you're a musician yourself, especially a guitarist.

With that said, the performance is impressive. Lorenzo Micheli covers a variety of techniques, but most notable is the composer's style. Castelnuevo-Tedesco wrote much film music, and even his guitar works have that feel. The excitement comes and goes -- there are short explosive parts to mostly calm pieces, and vice-versa. There are few selections with predictable melodies, and even those are fairly complicated.

Both performance and recording are excellent, but you probably won't enjoy this much unless you've listened to or played classical guitar for a while

Hesperion XX and others.......2007-03-28

This is a truly inspirational disc that features several different artists. I came across this disc years ago because of my interest in time period music performed by Jordi Savall and the lovely voice of Monteserrat Figueras in the group Hesperion XX. Both are featured on this disc extensively. Listening to this music is almost like a religious experience, it elevates your senses beyond the mundane for a richly rewarding experience; it is an auditory time warp. Essentially this is a compilation of time period music with compositions mostly from the 1500's. Besides the fabulous work by Hesperion XX the disc also includes some interesting work by Hopkinson Smith on Vihuela while Figueras sings in her lovely soprano voice. There are also some nice orchestra pieces most notably by Issac Ibeniz on "Iberia, El Puerto" which is a lush theme that would sit well in a movie about Spain's Golden Age, Manuel de Falla's beautiful compostion of "El Sombrero De Tres Picos" as performed by Joven Orchestra Nacional de Espana and Roberto Gerhard's "Don Quijote Albada Danza" as performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica de Tenerife. Also of note is the work of Francisco Guerau and the magical baroque guitar of Hopkinson Smith as performed on "Treze diferencias de Canario." Listening to this music reminds one of the grandeur of Spains's past in the Age of Discovery. This is classical album for people like me, who really don't know that much about classical music but realizes good music when he hears it. Recommended for people who like to listen to time period music and the interpretations of Hesperion XX.

I did'nt really like classical music till i bought España - Anthology of Spanish Music CD. I really, really love this CD. If your an artist and sometimes lack inspiration, I recommend this CD! It will get you in the mood to paint!

Great collection.......2000-11-04

Two complaints: no liner notes so any potential educational value is lost (I have a number of reference books around the house and some of these composers don't show up anywhere in them) and there is at least one extremely jarring organ work that blasts out of nowhere. A more listener friendly compilation would've sequenced the disc differently or left it out alltogether. That said, this is a wonderful collection of music that I have (mostly) never heard before. I'm glad Naive Astree saw fit to put a lot of obscure and out-of-print recordings together to form this audio introduction to an underappreciated canon.

Highlights include:

Track 8 - Jordi Savall (gamba), Ton Koopman (harpsichord), and Rolf Lislevand (lute) turn in a brief but jaunty chamber performance of Ortiz. Left me wanting more.

Track 11 - Hesperion XX give a haunting vocal performance of Morales' Pie Jesu Domine. I'm not one to ususally appreciate this sort of music (so consider me uninformed) but I found this truly beautiful.

Track 15 - features Hopkinson Smith on the baroque guitar performing a fascinating Guerau work. Descending arpeggios like gentle, trickling waterfalls. Smith is a stunning performer. I wish he was better known in the U.S.

Track 22 - from Haydn's original orchestral version of "The Seven Last Words Of Christ On The Cross," this is the one tempestuous movement from a work of mostly subdued music. Deep, powerful string sound from Savall's Le Concert Des Nations. Very well recorded.

While I'd like to know more about the works and the composers behind them there is so much here to be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level that I can't whine too much. If you have any interest, by all means pick up this bargain. You will be introduced to a number of great performers and works.

Great Music for dancing.......2003-03-15

From the moment I started listening to this CD, I knew I had purachased a winner. This is one of the few CDs where I enjoyed listening and dancing to almost every track. Jose has a great voice and his music is definitely for dancing. I highly recommend this CD.

DIFERENTE is definitely the best Salsa album of the year, and I have heard them all! Once more it demonstrates the great capability of Dominicans to produce upbeat, straight-to-the-roots salsa without selling themselves to mainstream commercial pop-salsa stuff. Cuco Valoy, Raulin, Michel Batista have shown it, and "El Canario" is their star. DIFERENTE includes nine salsa tracks, each and every one a hit, and a smooth bolero. What makes this album so special are the versatile, variable arrangments, the excellent musicians which you actually hear (check out Alfredo De La Fe's violine solos), the often soft beginning which develop into an upbeat dancefloor rhythm and, of course, "El Canario's" unbeatable interpretation, including it's characteristic flauta. Try Amada Mia, Fatimada, Quiero Salsa, Nina Y Senora, La Gorda, and you will not be disappointed!

José Alberto "El Canario"... Diferente y con clave.......2001-07-22

La nueva producción de José Alberto "El Canario" titulada "Diferente" es una producción para coleccionistas. El Canario, como se le conoce en el ambiente artístico, nos tiene acostumbrado a producciones donde la calidad musical es uno de los platos fuertes. Ni hablar de la interpretación inmejorable del único canario que canta salsa.

Con su nuevo trabajo, José Alberto demuestra que es uno de los salseros más versatiles de nuestro firmamento artístico. Allí El Canario no solo es el compositor de uno de los temas de la producción, "la gorda", sino que canta en francés y canta un bolero que nos transporta a los tiempos que nuestros abuelos opinan y muchos de jovenes, fueron los mejores.

La producción cuenta con dos temas que fueron éxitos: "Niña y señora" composición del gran compositor y músico cubano Ignacio Piñeiro acompañado por un formidable arreglo del saxofonista y arreglista Nelson Hernández. Además, el tema "El lunar" en el cual El canario hace un dúo con unos de los grandes soneros del Caribe, Cuco Valoy.

Amada mía, composición y arreglo del experimentado músico dominicano, Ramón Orlando vino a ser una gran acierto porque allí se combinan la singularidad de los arreglos de Orlando con el swing de José Alberto. En fin, "diseñadores perfectos" como reza uno de las improvisaciones de El Canario en la adaptción en salsa de la bachata "El molde".

Sin lugar a dudas, el tema "Quiero salsa" no es sólo uno de los mejores de la producción, sino uno de los más innovadores porque comienza como un acompasado merengue y luego hace una transición a salsa casi imperceptible. Esto no es más que una muestra de cómo los dos ritmos caribeños más populares, que muchos se empeñan en antagonizar, pueden llegar a una perfecta comunión.

Me atrevo a decir que, en términos generales, la nueva producción de El canario es una vuelta a lo que el público salsero quiere: Un reencuentro con la salsa dura de los años 70. Claro está, para muchos será un reencuentro, mientras que para otros, será un dulce descubrimiento.

Smooth, Tough, with a gallon of "savor". There is not a song you won't want to here again. I play it loud, soft, and a lot. I seem to say this everytime he comes out with a new CD, but I think this is his best. I've got 5 or 6 of his CD's and I seen him live with Celia. He is on the top of my list of salseros

La Mejor Salsa.......2000-01-28

Yes, I definately agree that "Flor de Canela" is the best song on here. El Canario se paso! The song starts off like a "vals" and then it becomes salsa and then it ends with "un toque de negroide". I definately recommend thids album y "Arriba el Peru"!

Salsa de la buena.......1999-07-28

One of a kind. The "true" salseros missed "The Canario" tune, i guess he's back again!!! My Favorite song is "la flor de la Canela" a beautiful song from the great composer Chabuca Granda from PERU.

Super Salsa from the Canary from Santo Domingo.......1999-06-18

I heard this cd for the first time. And the very first track is a song which the dancers will love. The rest of th album is also very good. However there is one merengue which isn t all that. It reminded me of Juan Luis Guerra , it is very sweet. I expected a more powerful tune from el Canario. The album is certainly worth buying.

The music on this CD is so beautiful. The playing is filled with emotion, it takes you to a place you have never been before. (Truly magical!!!!)

Pepe Romero is truly a great artist. I first listed to this CD when I borrowed it from a Public Library. The recording is very good, interpretation and performance is outstanding - crisp and clear. I like it very much that is why I am getting one for my self.

Guitarra! on CD is a little shorter than LP.......2007-04-22

Julian Bream's RCA soundtrack to the BBC's 7-part "suite of films" on the Classical Guitar in Spain has the great English master performing on period instruments like the Vihuela as well as the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical Guitars. This is a wonderful little tour through Spanish culture and I highly recommend a viewing of the DVD set as well. My only complaint with the CD is that several pieces were cut to squeeze the soundtrack onto a single disk. Absent from the CD but available on LP are Boccherini's "Fandango," Sor's "Sonata in D, Op. 14 (Gran Solo)," Tarrega's "Study in A," Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez II Adagio," and Albeniz's "Cordoba." I am particularly disappointed in that last omission, as well as the "Gran Solo." Also missing from both LP and CD versions is "Tiento" by Maurice Ohana. I would very much like to have a 2-disk version with these omitted pieces and anything else from the video I may have missed.

If you've seen the DVD. . ........2003-08-10

. . .then you'll want this CD. Lots of edited splicing, but Bream's supreme musicianship still shines through. His Fandanguillo interpretation (Turina) is one of my favorites of all time. Good luck finding a copy--this one's kind of rare now.
