Great Traditional Cuban Son.......2004-10-18

Conjunto Progreso is by far the most succesful Cuban Son group in the United States.
this CD takes you back to the cuba of old, with great classics done with a live feel.
No over produced material here. the problem with a lot salsa and latin releases is that there over produced. this CD sounds like recording of old, the way it should be done.
I recommend "Masters of Cuban Soul" to anybody looking for real Cuban Music.

Damn he's bad...........2007-06-29

You'll know why classic salsa rules forever. Just listen. This is definetly way progressive for the period, (as with pretty much all of Fania's artist at the time).

The word's kill. The arrangements blow you away and the musicianship is spontaneously combustible. This Salsa is the real deal. Not like today's mush aimed only at your wallet and short attention spans.

Roberto took you hard earned bucks and provided you with memories to die for. You'll feel the pain, the love the injustice as only Fania and those fantastic artist could express.

'Go on I say, take my money'. I'll gladly pay again just to listen to those sweet melodies...over and over again!

Fantastic songwriter and singer.......2007-05-27

This singer and songwriter has been singing since he was around seven, probably on the buses and sidewalks of Mexico. He's now one of Mexico's top and most beloved cultural icons. His songs are exquisite. It truly is hard to choose a favorite among them. 'Tatuajes' ('Tatoos' - I carry tatoos of your kisses all over my body... is excellent, but so is "Gracias por tanto amor', which on this disc, he dedicates to his fans.) Ladies love him because he knows what ladies like to hear, and gents love him because he teaches them how to woo, or at least expresses with great artistry what they would like to be able to.
Sigh. What a wonderful songster!

a big night in Jalisco.......2002-07-06

In this live concert from La Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso in Guadalajara, Joan sings many of his most loved songs, as well as having a lot of interaction with the audience.
Though his voice has developed some rough edges with age, this is a man who knows how to sing and interpret his wonderful melodies like few others can.

Highlights for me are "Veinticinco Rosas", "El Toro", which poetically uses a bullfight analogy on how to deal with problems, and his biggest hit to date, the multi-award winning "Secreto de Amor".
There is also a clever song about the joys of being 50 years of age ("a los cincuenta...ya sabemos como, y todavia podemos").

He's accompanied by a band led by Enrique Martinez, and in the final 3 "encore" songs, by the Mariachi Aguilas de America.
The booklet insert does not have lyrics, but is full of photos, and a P.R. version of Joan's life (just the pleasant stuff).
Total time is 54'25, and the sound is good...one can hear the audience, but it's well balanced, and not intrusive.

This is an excellent CD for fans of Joan, who like me, have never had the opportunity to hear and see him in concert...for those new to this singer/songwriter, I'd recommend his "Secreto de Amor" CD.

Old School Salsa!.......2006-01-22

This 1978 release by Roberto Roena was way ahead of its time and still sound fresh and exciting. This CD feature the great Juan Antonio "Papo" Pepin on conga drums and many percussionist who are not aware of these two great players should listen up. If you want to hear some great arrangements and sophisticated percussion riffs, this is the CD for you.

A near-perfect classic from a true Salsa legend........2004-12-29

This 1979 release was not as good as Roberto's classic fifth and sixth albums (the former includes the masterpieces "Ponte Duro", "Oriza Eh" and "Que Se Sepa" while the latter features the timeless "Herencia Rumbera", "Parece Mentira" and "Traicion") but has some superb classic 1970s "Salsa Dura" jams in the form of "Guaguanco Del Adios" and "Viva Cortijo". Not one of Roberto's all-time best works but one that will surely please his many fans.
