Turkish Delight........2007-02-13
It's one thing to be told about the cultural exchanges that have taken place in the Mediterranean region, and another to actually hear some of them. Besides the lesser known sounds of Afghanistan and the Ottomon Empire, this recording contains some "covers" of European medieval material probably known to afficianados of the genre, but with a seductive Levantine accent that makes one wonder what Moslem-Christian-Jewish harmonies could yet be made on a political level given the richness of this musical experience.
Intriguing Music Between East and West.......2007-02-09
Jordi Savall and his Hesperion XXI are joined in this recording by seven musicians from Greece and Middle Eastern countries playing instruments that include the transverse flute, or tulak, the rubab, tablas, zir baghali and oud. I am a longtime admirer of Jordi Savall and Hesperion XXI and was very much intrigued by the goal of this CD to present the music of the medieval East and West showing how different cultures would influence each other. A piece from the Middle East is paired with one from the West and, indeed, one needs to keep the booklet handy to tell if the music is from a Muslim, Christian or Jewish tradition. It is simply a pleasure to hear the sounds produced by the various Middle Eastern and ancient instruments: the exotic rhythms, the beat of the drums and dancing melodies are a treat.
The disc is nicely recorded as all of the Hesperion XXI recordings have been. My only wish would have been for more information about each of the works on the disc and it would have been interesting to know something about the seven instrumentalists who joined with Mr. Savall. What we have in the booklet is an overview by Jordi Savall that does not go too deeply into the music we are hearing. This aside, Orient-Occident is a disc not to be missed.
East meets West in an enticing program featuring one of the best Early Music ensembles around.......2006-10-15
Fans of Early Music should be familiar with Jordi Savall and his highly polished and innovative Hespèrion XXI ensemble. Savall's releases on the Alia Vox label are usually theme based and contain a highly varied, excellently performed program of Early Music works. This release is no exception. In comparison with other Early Music anthologies, the geographical and temporal focus of this release is broader, with songs having origins from, among other places, Spain, Afghanistan, Italy and Morocco; with the compositional time period ranging from the 13th to 17th century.
Those who have followed Savall's previous releases will note that the composition of the ensemble is quite different on this recording. There is no vocalist accompaniment and wind participation is limited to a single transverse flute. But there are some rather distinctive additions here. Ensemble participants, on this recording, include ouds (Middle-Eastern lutes), an Afghan rubab (a lute with sympathetic strings), a santur (an Iranian dulcimer-like instrument), a wide variety of percussion instruments, and a vielle (played by Savall).
The program itself features alternating sequences of Eastern and Western compositions, illuminating the differences and similarities between the musical styles of such cultures. Some of the Western pieces are taken from the "Cantigas de Santa Maria" cycle or have their origins in the Istampittas of Medieval Italy. Some of the Eastern compositions were taken from a manuscript entitled "The Book of the Science of Music through Letters" written by the Ottoman musicologist Dimitrie Cantemir, while others were probably carried forward from a strong oral tradition.
My favorite Western compositions on the program include the lively Saltarello (Track 14) and the aggressive leaping melody of the Ductia (Track 2). While, on the other hand, my favorite Eastern compositions include the exotic Laili Djan (Track 7), the sensuous Mola Mamad Djan (Track 19) and the assertive, rhythmically-charged Turk melody, Makam Uzal Sakil 'Turna' (Track 21). Even though each composition can be designated with an "East" or "West" title, one of purposes in compiling this program was to show that the cultures and religions making their homes on the different sides of the Mediterranean were not always at odds with each other, and the exchange of ideas did take place. This exchange notably manifests itself through the fact that the first bowed instruments came from the East. Additionally, the melodies of Medieval Europe, filled with leaping intervals, ornamented phrases and syncopations, contain much in common with Eastern music. As an example, listen to the intricate melody of the Italian Istampitta: In Pro (Track 8). Throughout this program, the underlying beat of the darbouka, tambor and other percussion instruments serves as an unifying element between the East and West (the lively and virtuosic percussion playing on this recording deserves special mention).
As with Savall's previous releases, the playing, as well as the sound quality, is fantastic. Similar to the previous Hespèrion releases on Alia Vox, the disc is distinctively packaged within a tri-fold case, with picture laden program notes inserted in the front cover. In conclusion, this release is enthusiastically recommended to those who enjoy highly varied, and exciting early music programs; even to those who (think that they) have little or no interest in Eastern early music.

Rennaissance music at it's finest!.......2007-06-29
This was my first Renaissance music album and the broad styles of several composers were very well represented, especially Michael Pretorius, probably the most well-known composer of his time. The tonal quality sparkles and the latin language comes alive (along with English translation in the included booklet); be prepared for an aural "feast" of some of the more eclectic music from the Renaissance period!
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-04
To quote from the accompanying booklet seems to be in order to start this review: "This collection attempts to wipe the dust from some old ideas and restore music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance to its roots deep in the human soul.........What you're listening to on this disc is not the domain of museums, but the music of the people, born of faith and the love of song and dance".
This is a varied group of works, some dances, some strictly instrumental and some accompanied vocal.
The role of dancing, as you might suspect, was enormously important in this era. 'Le Bouree' showcases the dance music of the composer Michael Praetorius. The 'Bransles de Villages' is of French origin and features 2 violins, 2 violas, a cello, a great bass viol, hurdy-gurdy and 2 lutes. 'La scesa de Pastori dal Monte' is an Italian dance by Andrea Ansalone. Another dance written by Michael Praetorious was the 'Volte' which actually involved 4 short dances. It was considered not respectable because of the close contact between the dancers.
The strictly instrumental songs are : 'Dum pater familias' is called a pilgrim song, and it was religious in nature. And, of course, all the dance songs are instrumental.
The vocally oriented songs are: 'Quen a Virgin ben servira' is a song taken from a collection of songs about the miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary.-Three of the songs are from the famous 'Carmina Burana' manuscript.- 'Orientis partibus' is from the 'Feast of fools'which was a feast held by the church itself in which the status of the church herarchy was reversed as inferior clergy assumed the role of their superiors.-'Stella Splendours' is another pilgrim song; this song was sung by pilgrims who went to worship as the Shrine of the Virgin at Montserrat.
I always trust the quality of a CD when Philip Pickett and the New London Consort are involved. This album is very interesting, but I would hope that this would be classified as the more "pop" type music of the period. Also, I don't think that I personally would call it early music, as is indicated in the accompanying booklet. Today that term brings to mind Monteverdi, Cavalli, Palestrina, the Scarlatti's, up to and including Handel and Bach etc.. Just a personal reaction on my part. This is a very well put together disc.
A good sampler of New London Consort's work.......2006-12-20
Although there's nothing special about this disc as a compilation, it does provide a value-priced sampling of 17 tracks from the New London Consort's excellent recorded work. Given that so many of their recordings are difficult to find on CD at a reasonable price, and that one of my personal favorites ("Bache bene venies", from their masterful 4-CD recording of the Carmina Burana) is included here, I'd recommend this CD as a great place to start while you search for the original releases.
Excellent renditions of lively 'old music'........2005-11-23
'Sinners & Saints' by Philip Pickett and the New London Consort is just a bit too ambitious with their subtitle, 'The Ultimate Medieval and Renaissance Music Collection' as I find it hard to believe that 70 minutes can be the ultimate anything on 500 years of history. This is especially true since they seem to focus a lot more on the sinners than the saints, as there is virtually no liturgical music here. But, since there are so many good recordings of medieval liturgies, we aren't missing much.
This is really the sort of thing you would expect to hear from a travelling troupe of minstrals, but not from a solo artist, as practically every performance involves several instruments and voices.
Some tracks will sound especially familiar, as they are very similar to Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana', inspired by medieval texts.
Compared to many recordings of music from Shakespeare's time, this collection is superior and well worth the investment.
A Treasure of the Time Period.......2005-08-11
I bought this CD with a children's history class in mind. We are studying the Dark Ages to the Rennaisance. I was delighted to hear the variety of selections which span the spectrum of genres during this period of history. My children and I have been listening to it in the car as well as at home for the simple enjoyment of the music. It will be exciting to present these pieces to my class as I feel it is a very accurate display of the cultures, instrumentation, languages, and styles of the Middle Ages. I am a proffesional musician and thoroughly enjoy most types of music so it wasn't hard to get me interested but I was surprised to hear my eight-year-old and five-year-old sons asking to hear this CD. The former child said it made him feel "important" to listen!!

Bursting with Visceral Life and Earthy Joy!.......2007-02-16
Hard to believe we can buy this precious gem for under $10 -- and what a gem it is! Easily my favourite medieval music CD. This isn't museum music, or a cerebral esoteric dip into European medieval cultures. This music leaps out and grabs you -- recalling images of everything from the still smile of a 13th-century Madonna to the chaos of Breugel and Bosch. Belinda Sykes' voice is alive with earth, grit, heat, and a transcendent beauty that needs to be experienced to be believed. The musicians are magicians: they'll have you dancing, singing, praying -- getting your bare feet soiled in the hot holy dust of a pilgrim's trail: enjoy!
Unexpected delight.......2006-08-29
Not sure what I was expecting, but this is a very refreshing collection. Hypnotic and robust at the same time. Two thumbs up -- 'at's all I got.
Would be Worth Buying at Three Times the Price.......2006-02-19
One of the hidden gems of the Naxos catalog are the series of recordings of Medieval music by the Ensemble Unicorn with Michael Posch. The music they choose to record here comes from the 14th century Llivre Vermell de Monstserrat preserved there in an codex of five parts. The book resulted from an attempt to set contemporary popular music to spiritual texts to help to reach out to a wider audience.
This CD is exemplary in every possible way. The liner notes written by Michael Posch himself are superb. Furthermore, the recorded sound quality is pretty much audiophile grade and runs rings around those produced by major record labels for the fraction of the price. The music making is beautiful, evocative and fascinating with all performances having the intensity and brilliance you can always count on from this superb ensemble.
Very highly recommended.
Here's my two cents.......2006-02-10
Let me add my two cents to the laudatory reviews already given. I bought this CD some time ago when I was developing an interest in early music. The title and the theme fascinated me. Also it was inexpensive, and I know from my experience that NAXOS, even though inexpensive, delivers quality goods. I was not the least disappointed. This is the music of an important era in history brilliantly performed by Unicorn Ensemble and Belinda Sykes. Belinda Sykes deserves to be better known than she is. She has a marvelous voice, and her delivery is without peer. When she sings, I am transported back to the days of those pilgrims whose songs she is singing. This music is not like other music. at times it may seem raucous. Just keep in mind the epoch from which these songs come. Open your mind. I assure you that you will be transformed.
a window on another world.......2005-12-05
I picked up this cd because of a family connection with the Black Madonna of Monserrat. She's an integral part of the religious life of my dad's hometown. I thought the cd would make a good present for my dad but I didn't really expect the music to be anything special. However, I was simply blown away upon listening to it. This is an incredible blend of voice, rhythm and percussion that conveys the earthiness and transcendence of peasant pilgrim experience. I'm not a fan of early music -- I don't dislike it, I just don't know that much about it. Most of the early music I have listened to, however, is nowhere near as textured and intricate as these songs. What's amazing to my ears is that arrangements manage to sound both ancient and startlingly contemporary at the same time. I'm betting that sooner or later, someone will be giving these songs a trance-music treatment -- if that hasn't already happened.

The most noble voice.......2004-05-28
Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.

A special Dignity and an Unfailing Beauty of Voice........2000-09-17
This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

One of the Gems of the Naxos Catalog.......2005-12-26
I remeber the first time I played this CD it captivated me from the very first note and gripped my attention all the way to the very end. The wildness of the Spanish mysticism expressed in this Marian music from 13th century Iberian peninsula recorded here exerts a hypnotic magnetism that is thoroughly engrossing. The music reflects the influence of troubadours but given the Eastern Orthodox origins of the cult of the Virgin Mary, Orthodox chant influences likely exists as perhaps do Sephardic and Muslim influences given that this region was a great cultural melting pot in its day. As usual, Ensemble Unicorn brings tremendous performing energy into the musical 're-enactment' so to speak, with an approach as far removed from the staid and academic you could possibly ask for.
As usual with Ensemble Unicorn recordings the sound quality puts that of many a major recording to utter shame. To be able to buy an audiophile grade recording at this represents a rediculous bargain indeed. That said, it is for the music you should buy this highly recommendable CD and one of the gems of the Naxos catalogue.
Beatiful religious music well performed.......2002-12-06
The Spanish King, Alfonso X, compiled the Cantigas of Santa Maria which were published into exquisitely decorated manuscripts. The songs celebrate different aspects of the virgin Mary's life and are meant as prayers and meditations.
This CD contains only a few of the over 300 songs that were complied and offers a wide variety of musical styles which are exuberantly played by the Ensemble Unicorn---which has recorded many Early Music CDs for Naxos.
As usual the Naxos program notes are excellent and offer a novice listener a better understanding of the music and the time it was composed.
In the CDs which were compiled earlier in their history, Naxos does not include the words to vocal pieces. It would be better if the words were included, but I think the performance itself deserves a top rating,
Typically good recording by Unicorn.......2001-08-29
A friend of mine commented that a male soprano is an acquired taste. The countertenor on this disc sings with a lot of conviction, and the alternation with the rich baritone make it very listenable. The instrumental improvisations get a little wild -- typical for this ensemble -- but they never sound completely improbable. These versions of Cantigas 18 and 295 in particular are possibly the best out there, and definitely the most fun.

GREAT!!! Just wonderful. (if you like ancient music).......2006-12-18
I was not sure about this, but saw another 5 star rating, and decided to take the gamble. This is a really nice CD. It has all sizes of recorders played, and lots of various percussion instruments of the day. This has lots of happy ancient dance songs and more solumn sounding but beautiful peices. The cover says the group is from Argentina. I am now looking for more of their CDs.
Excellent overview.......2000-08-18
I was introduced to this collection at an institute of The California Arts Project which focused on teaching beginning recorder. This CD has an excellent variety...using the different types of recorders, and music of different periods. This CD is good for developing listening skills and for appreciating the importance of the recorder throughout musical history.

Customer Reviews:
another winner from Naxos.......2007-02-21
This is another winning compilation from Naxos. My only comment is to provide a heads-up regarding the track list in the booklet. CD 1 puts the Leonin "Viderunt Omnes" on six tracks, while the booklet leaves room for only one. Thus, add five to booklet tracks five through 21 for CD1 to get them to match. (I.e., where the booklet says tracks 15 and 16 are two versions of Josquin's "El Grillo," your CD player will show them to be tracks 20 and 21.) With luck this will be corrected in later printings.
Also, I would have liked the booklet to include the words, but perhaps that is an inducement to get particular CDs from Naxos.
As for the music itself--breadth of selection, musicianship, sound quality, all are excellent. A great collection!
awesome value -- 5+ stars.......2006-07-15
I'm really enthusiastic about these CDs and booklet. I've had it for a few weeks now, in which I've explored Medieval and Renaissance music much more deeply than this little book and CD set. Yet I'm very glad I started with these.
The selection of composers gives an excellent, broad sweep across several centuries.
But the booklet contains one of the most informative essays I've found about early music, and I've spent a few dozen dollars buying books. If the booklet were separated from the CDs, it alone would be worth more than $10.
In short, if you're interested in exploring early music, this really is one of the best places to start; the best place that I know of. I'm sure, at any rate, that you can't beat the value.

Album Description
Introducing Cello, the second solo recording by longtime Gourd cellist and producer Barry Phillips.
Cello's expansive soundscape features traditional and contemporary cello solos, duos, and trios gleaned from traditions around the globe and from eight centuries of music. The 15 tracks present instrumentation and arrangements of melodies from Western and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and North America.
Phillips has recently been touring with and arranging for sitar legend Ravi Shankar. This influence is heard on his new recording as Phillips blends the sounds of harmonium, tabla and tanpura with traditional Celtic tunes and instrumentation.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully resonant, playful cello music!.......2006-09-30
Another great recording from Gourd music, "Cello" features Celtic, medieval and traditional European tunes arranged for cello and a host of other acoustic instruments too numerous to mention. I just love this CD, especially when played on a stereo system with a good bass! I've said it before and I'll say it again: there's something about the deep, rich tones of a cello that centers my body and awakens my soul, and I'm always glad to hear cellists breaking out of their customary role as accompanists and really strutting their stuff. On this album, Barry Phillips wanders far and wide, exploring musical traditions through the centuries and across the Old World, and creating clever, engaging arrangements that vary in flavor from traditional and "modern" classical to New Age and world fusion. Often the cello takes the lead, but just as frequently, Phillips is happy to switch off with one or more of his guest artists, transitioning easily from melody to harmony to accompaniment and back again. This jaunty, sonorous music is sure to be enjoyed by everyone, but musicians will especially appreciate it for its seemingly effortless complexity of texture, rhythm and line. In addition to performing cello, Phillips also plays cittern (a Renaissance strummed instrument with metal strings), harmonium, pipe organ, dilruba (a bowed, broad-necked lute from India), tanpura (a Near Eastern lute), zither and percussion. Joining him on what seems to be, in part, a family outing, are Shelley Phillips on oboe, English horn, whistle and harp, Nathan Phillips on guitar, and Todd Phillips on bass. Also joining the party are early music expert Shira Kammen on vielle and violin, Jared White on Scottish smallpipes and recorder, Lars Johannesson on flute, Theo Paige on fiddle, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh on low whistle, Bikram Ghos on tabla, Martin Simpson on guitar, Neal Hellman on mountain dulcimer, Chris Caswell on bodhran, tar and tambourine, Harris Moore on hammered dulcimer, and Karuna Ault on tanpura. The prolific Barry and Shelley Phillips can be heard together on many other recordings, including "The Crooked Road" by frequent collaborator William Coulter , "Celtic and Contemporary Music" by Orison, and the releases of Aine Minogue. For more great cello music, try also "Cello Blue" by David Darling, "Eastern Twin" by Martin Tillman, and "Spirit and Light" by Rasa cellist Hans Christian.
Barry Trivia.......2004-02-03
This brilliant CD is a collage of music from all over the world. When people pick up this album I think they may be expecting something with more of a Classical flare, but in fact Barry is known for his gifts as an interpreter of world music as well as an arranger/composer. Little Known Barry Facts: #1, He's a student of legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar, and played in Ravi's orchestra at the Concert for George. #2, Barry's first instrument was the drums, and he had a rock band at age ten. #3, His cello features a carving of a lion's head that looks uncannily similar to Teddy Rosevelt. #4, Barry has a degree in composition and has written chamber music inspired by 'Frog and Toad'. #5, He arranged a version of 'Purple Haze' for three cellos and performed it at a Celtic camp ceilidh. Anyway, the trivia could go on forever. I hope you enjoy this wonderful CD!!!
Carefully chosen melodies beautifully played.......2002-02-08
On this CD Barry Phillips has assembled a collection of compelling melodies from a whole range of traditions. The tunes are predominately Celtic, but there are also some lovely Shaker melodies and music from Sweden and Spain. The arrangements are wonderful - original combinations of acoustic instruments including zither, tanpura, oboe, cittern, fiddle and of course cello. It's not for strict traditionalists, but any fan of acoustic music would find this worth a listen.
Celtic classics with a twist.......2001-10-25
Barry provides a really excellent album. If you're looking for pure cello music with only mild accompaniment, you're probably looking in the wrong place, but this is pretty good. The songs reminisce of other things i've heard from other Celtic artists, but that may just mean that the composer is providing different renditions. It's a relaxing set of songs that will provide lots of enjoyment if you like Celtic music, particularly strings. But if you want more in-depth Cello music, look elsewhere.
Lush, haunting melodies.......2001-01-04
I first heard Barry Phillips performing Shaker music in Santa Cruz on New Year's Eve. I went up to ask him about cds and Celtic music for cello, and my sister said, "I have his cd, and it's wonderful!" So I had to rush back to her place to hear it. I'm a cellist, and a fan of Celtic music, and it's such a treat to have those two passions combined on this recording. Besides cello, there are many other traditional instruments featured, such as bagpipe, wooden flute, and Celtic harp played by Barry's wife. I highly recommend this cd for fans of traditional Celtic and folk music, and also those eager to hear the rich voice of solo cello.
